Does anyone remember the old elementary school on LaSalle Rd. at the bottom of Gordon? I went to Kindergarten there, then they condemned the building (no, I didn't have anything to do with that!!!). I then went to Bannantyne for grade 1 through 7. The principal, Mr. Laroque, transferred as well, and became principal of Bannantyne. If memory serves, it was called Model School. They remodeled it and turned it into a French-language junior college.
About the only thing I remember about it was that there were rats in the basement, and that in winter we used the hill that went up to the boardwalk from the playgraound for sledding.

Hi, It was LaSalle Road Model School ....... I went there in Grade 4 (1951) and that was the last year of the school, I was transferred to Woodland. They demolished it and built Colĺ±”ge Jean-Jacques Olier ...... now I think there is a McDonald's there. Helen
My mom and her sisters and brother went to that school when they were young , they used to live across the street from the school. My moms name is Jane Cunningham, her sisters are Jessie Cunningham and Margaret Mcclauchlan, and her brother Jim Mcclauchlan. Speaking of Bannantyne school I went there myself from grades 1 to 3, (1971-1974).
I remember Mr Laroque very well at Model School, but before he moved to Bannantyne. Does anyone remember the winter that a lttle child went through the ice and they didn't find her till the spring ? She lived across from Lasalle Road School. I really didn't think that the building was that bad. This is back in 1942, and my first teacher was Miss Mather...Remember ????
Hi Jacqueline, Welcome to this site! Where you can always get an answer from someone! I might be able to shed some light on your item. There was a case where a boy and girl both sliding down a hill to the river went through the ice around Willibrord St. She was able to scramble out, but he didn't make it. I don't remember the girls name but the boy was a friend of mine, and in my class. His name was Lionel Oswald. This was "about 1945". I didn't have Miss Mather but I do remember her. Grade four wasn't it? I had Miss Sparks! There's a picture of a Miss Martin Grade seven class back on the "General" message board, (Verdun Model School on 4/30/2005 ). You may recognize some of us. Art
Hi Art..I remember that tragic accident so well. The boy tried to rescue her and he fell in. Do you remember Allen Berling in Miss Martin's class. He was Buzz's brother.Anyway, I had Miss Horton two years. Mr. Laroque was a great guy.
I was born in 1937 , went to Model School till grade 7 Probably 42 to 49 , my dad was in the navy , world war 2 , used to walk from 3rd avenue and Wellington to Gordon and Lasalle each and every day , home for lunch and back, used to get milk at recess that I can remember . I had Mrs Martin in grade 7 , I seem to remember a Miss Jones in grade 5 and Jimmy Haughton in grade six, think he was an ex wrestler, we used to play floor hockey in basement and I don't remember that the school was dirty.Mr laroque was principal for sure, I also remember doing Rip Van Winkle play in grade 7 ,Bobby French was Rip , I was the peddler, geez it was such a great childhood , we had nothing , but we had everything, just love my Verdun memories and have fond memories of the lanes , balconies , people , stores but most of all the friendship Jimmy
art......do you have a sister named Beryl Dawe? cookie
Hi Cookie, Sorry, but I don't have any sisters or brothers, and I've always been a bit sorry about that! Hope you had a great Christmas! Art
