Ghosts of Griffintown.

Hello All,

The bad news is that Ghosts of Griffintown didn't make it into the
HotDocs

Festival in Toronto.

The good news is that it will be on CFCF on Saturday March 13 at 3 pm.

It is the shorter version (wonder what commercials they'll have?)

For ordering the longer version, the book, or just to read the
transcript.

Bill,   Thaks for the memories.  From 1958 until mid-1960 we lived on the 2nd floor of a flat just up from the corner from Ottawa on Shannon street. Even then right across the street was a field surrounded by a fence.  I never knew what had been on that lot just that we weren't allowed to play there.  My Grand-parents lived in Goose Village next to DuKuypers and as I grew up I never really understood the subtleties of being from Griffintown versus the Village.   I don't remember much about the area we lived in as I was was only about 4 going on 5.   I do remember that the back yard was not a safe place to play as there were rats the size of cats.  The building next to us was a wharehouse or garage of some type but there we people who lived on the street across from us and they had a whap of kids. I don't remember their names at the moment but I do remember that I ran into the boys at camp Lewis some 6 or 7 year later and for that summer we were firends again.  I remember my sister and I hanging out he windows screaming back and forth like kids will do and my mother having a coniption fit about behaving respectfully.   Another thing I remember about the house was the bathroom, it had been added after the fact and was in a painted glass booth that you had to step up to get into.  The wall didn't quite make it all the way to the ceiling and the noises were quite comical.    We were fortunate to have a television and I remember sitting and watching the Conductor Mantovani for hours (still enjoy his music) when no one else was out to play.   The Dow Brewery was at the end of the street and the sickly sweet smell of hops fermenting has always been a comfort to me (go figure).  My Dad work at the CN Express garage on Inspector street and the odd time I got to go visit.  Before we moved Dad had been transferred to the Bonaventure Freight Sheds on Peel and we use to have a daily excursion to walk to his office and escort him back home so he wouldn't get lost.    A lot of memories for two summers......   Ernie

Thanks Ernie,
My father and his 7 brothers and sisters grew up in Griffintown and
Goose Village. They were all baptized in St. Ann's as Irish Catholics.
My father took me there when I was ten and showed me a little of the
neighborhood which was not far from where he worked at the CNR. The
smells I remember from G.V., was of the slaughter houses. G.V. was the
poorest and the toughest section of Montreal. I have read, the Montreal
Police would never go into the streets without back up.
Take care.

Cree Camp
Lake De La Cabanne
Beaverback Rock
Knights of Luckamas

Loved that place and the memories it brings.
Len Richman and Ron Cummings were both teachers at Bannantyne who doubled there in the summer.
Steve Brigden was a councillor who I later met up with in High School only to discover that he was only a couple of years older than I was.

Bob (Soggy) McGraw, Alain Godin were a couple of the other campers I remember.

Ahh the memories

Hello,

Just a little reminder that next June Mary Gallagher might be paying a
visit.
It has been almost seven years since people gathered for the ghost
watch as shown in "Ghosts of Griffintown".
Meanwhile you may want a copy of the documentary or the book for
yourself or as a gift.
You can visit the site to find the order form.
Have a happy holiday
