Presents

Reggie. Talking about Christmas presents. I tell my kids and grandkids. The most presents I ever got when I was a kid, was 7. No toys mind you. It would be socks, underwear(and not a package of 6), shirt, maybe winter gloves. BUT NEVER ANY TOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, I guess most of us in Verdun were in the same boat. It was still great. Christmas presents!!!
My Mom was a seamstress and had a home business back in the mid forties til
late 50's creating magic from her early 40's Singer sewing machine. Every
Christmas there was a new dress for me under the Christmas tree. All my
friends "Knew" what they were getting for Christmas and so one year I
decided to snoop. Found the dress in the back of my Mom's bedroom closet, and
that was forbidden territory. But now I could tell my friends just what my
dress was going to be. Green Tafetta with a white lace collar. I regret the
day I snooped. Christmas was not the same that year.

I was very lucky at Christmas time, my grandmother was a beautiful knitter, and every year we got new hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters.  I didn't realize it at the time, but her and I used to find every church rummage sale in the area and we bought all the used woolen goods we could find.  She used to unravel them and turn them into works of art.   One Christmas I received a small plastic doll wearing a complete Christening outfit that she had knit for me.  I still have that doll and her outfit, although 55 years later it has a few moth holes, but a real keepsake.  It is the only "toy" I still have from my childhood.   We were blessed, weren't we?
