Earth Hour 2008
We all can make a difference! Click on the link to sign up with me (it's slow to load). Even if you don't sign up, you can still make a difference by turning off your lights for 1 hour at 8:00pm on March 29th.
I've used more power trying to sign in .............Yikes !! I'm all for turning the lights out (most of the time,......I find myself automatically turning off lights all the time...Yikes I've become my parents)..............hahahahaha Maggie I can't guarantee ,I won't inadvertently turn on that light in the fridge ,afterall Mar 29th is a Saturday Night ,..& I've got guests comming over for dinner,.so there's a good chance a few wobbly pops will make their way out of the fridge, and it may overlap that time frame............Wanna really save power ,then go around your homes & just see how many things are always on,.....of course freezers,.fridges,.furnace's ,clock radios ....TV usually are constantly drawing a little power,.nite lights,.......microwaves,..some people leave their PC's on all the time ....and although I rarely do it,.I should turn off the hot water heater, whenever gone for more than a few days,.it's the largest draw of power in your house,..........So we can save everyday,.but do we???? hf&rv
I guess the "earth hour" is catching a lot of interest and their website can't handle the traffic. The most important thing is to participate. Signing up is only a way for them to estimate participation. The true measure will be in the amount of energy that is NOT being used on Saturday night from 8 - 9. It will hopefully have a lasting effect as people become aware of the difference they can make by turning off power, ezpecially when it is not in use. Re: water heaters. Good advice Les. You could always get a friend or neighbour to turn it back on a few hours before your return if you are looking forward to that shower at home. I would also advise turning off the water source to your tank so that if it chooses to break while you are away, the spillage will be confined to the capacity of your tank!
Don't forget tonight to shut off your lights from 8 to 9. Below are some things to do with candles. Lets see if we can make a difference to our planet.Bill (Second Avenue) http://www.earthhourus.org/newsletters/reminder.html
On the News on TV They just showed the event down under, and thousands of people showed up,& the highways were packed with cars,as they truned out all the lights a long the road ,& all you could see were headlights.............Ya...they sure saved a lot of carbon from the air with all those running cars...............hahahahaha
I don't know about everyone here but I for one feel completely powerless every time the price of electricity, gasoline or bread is hiked. Soon the gas pumps will have a slot for our pay checks. This Earth Hour movement is a way for us lowly citizens to at least feel we have some economical/environmental control. One lousy hour from 8 to 9 p.m., what's the big deal? It might be a positive sacrifice. Bill
Of course it's a good idea,.but it accomplish's little if anything,.We are relatively powerless over price hikes of anything, but if you drive a vehicle & the guage says MT then pull in and put some fuel in,.regardless of the price,if you need it ,then buy itif you cannot afford it,then the option is the old Montreal 'BMW' Bus Metro or Walk so it's not a big deal about the hour,..it's absolutely not a big deal,.and I'm sure the suits (or those collecting dividends on their Oil Stocks remember those?)......hahahaha There the ones sitting back having a nice supper ,perhaps by candle light & laughing all the way to the bank......Try & do something (no matter how little) Everyday to help the overall problem,.but a 1hour deal is strictly symbolic, that people are aware ..........Btw anyone notice that they don't call it Global Warming too much anymore...it's now referred to as 'Climat Change'....hmmmmmm isn't that another way of saying 'Weather'............ and we all know how accurate 'the weather forecasters ' are don't we,......They can't get the 5 day forecast right,.but i'm to believe that 50 -75 years from now ,we'll all be basking on the beach...........hahahahahaha I Can't wait for the next big scare,.....what will it be next ,....let's see , a new ice age (nope we've done that 15 years ago) ...could it be the earth is hit by an Asteroid.....Nope that's right we did that too....hmmmmmPestilence ( nope,.done that too according some book) .....Floo -nope.................hahahahah There's always a cause & there's always a cure (usually) I have faith in mankind to come up with something new,....Remember Neccessity is the mother of Invention................................ besides I'm kidding Bill,.....hahahahahahah Think I'll go out and leave my Car running for a while( with the lights on too..) .......................... H ... Fun Remember V....
When I shut the power off to my humble abode something phenomenal occurs. There pesky electric meter outside suddenly stops turning. Hmm...veeery interesting. And yes you do have a good sense of humour there Les. Bill (unashamedly collecting BP dividends quarterly).
Every time you decrease the amount of power that is used in your household or business, no matter how small, you are making a difference. Every "little" effort adds up, no matter how insignificant you think it may be.
There are strong feelings on each side of this. I didn't expect to change the world by turning out my lights. I just hoped that it could make us (my family) more aware of how much we waste or take for granted each day. (My kids did come home with this and I don't think they are crazy!) I do walk to work so I have to fill up my gas tank less. I don't think I am saving the world but I do know that I am saving a penny here and there. Thank-you for not responding with negative criticism. I am open to constructive criticism. How many of you get up on a sunlit morning and turn the lights on anyway? (this is a retorical question, just put out there to make you think)

Maggie. Sorry I could not sign up. It kept giving me an error message.
Has anyone else followed my link to the Earth Hour site?
Maggie. We are going to turn our lights off on the 29th, between 8:00pm and 9:00pm.
Tried different attempts but computer just froze. Ron.
I tried several times Maggie but each time I reset the site to access it.
