Maynard Ferguson - Pavillion

I found the enclosed add in the Guardian in a  1945 edition, of Maynard Ferguson appearing at the Pavillion. Of course Maynard went on to become a famous jazz musician throughout Canada, the U.S. and worldwide. Does anybody remember him? He was born and  in Verdun. He would be in his late 70s today and wonder if he is still playing. He is/was known for playing very high notes on his trumpet. (SHGV Archives)

(Archives SHGV)

Hi  Arbutus,..(Gary)........haven't seen you on here for a while,..good to see your strill watching .....  as for Maynard,...there sure are a lot of 'hits' when you type his name into Google,..628 pages on my first attempt,....I guess if he was born in May of '28,.......his family name may be ina Verdun phone Book of those years (if they had a phone  ...maybe unlikely,....but there must have been Census Books around,.....they say he learned Piano & Violin at age 4,........but then it says he went to the French Conservatory of Music,at age 9,.....which would make it 1937,.....now if we could find out where the French Coservatory of Music was,..they may have a record of his attemdance ,as well as where he lived,.........Might be a good place to start,.....but I'm sure you have traced down most of the obvious leads (round up the usual suspects)..........hahahahaha   Hope you get your man......  Good Luck , Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Gary, This is terrific information. I have viewed the sites you mention and they are very informative and entertaining. It is amazing to see how activ Maynard is at 77 , specially since a trumpet is very demanding physically. Harry James died relatively at a young age but his smoking did not help. If we can find his place of birth, I will take a picture of the house and post it. Thanks again for your efforts. Guy

Francois I replied to your email, the ad was lost over the years in transferring from our old site to this one, I have tried to save as many of the old stories as possible & a lot of photos do appear in different blog topics, but as mentioned some just didn't make it. Cheers ! LesF
