penmanship,.is onething that was stressed and practiced in dchool,.from an early age,...and you can see the effects of our own writing as we slowly teype more e-,mail's rather than write anymore,.....the quality of the writing does drop ,if you don't use the skills,......Practice as they used to say ,.makes perfect,........same as trying long division or any of the other things we were taught in school....... the old adage 'use it or lose it' definetly comes into play. Now speaking of play,......... Montreal's Metro System ,getting old,...and the City will order them to 'slow down' this great subway system is forecasting many delays as the aging fleet ,is in need of some TLC,....hard to believe it was back in the mid 60's that this super way to get around Montreal was just getting started: http://urbanrail.net/am/monr/montreal.htm now that last picture,is old ,..checkout the camera the guuy is using ,filming the old Mayor./////////////////////............................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun,..

Hi Les, I love the Metro, and ride it whenever I return to Montreal, just to be on it, no other reason hahaha. The architecture of the stations is beautiful. Toronto think they have the "best" subway, but it's a derelict in comparison. Mike
Hi Habfan, yes the montreal Metro system is nicelt designed,.and even being 40years old,.it still presents itself as a modern looking ,clean ,well lit,and efficient ,system,.the architechture of te buildings reallis something as you mentioned,.Each station unique into itself,....no 'cookie cutter' generic boring old facades on the Montreal Metro,...also if People are into 'art' they couldn't have a more varied selection of pieces to look at ,...and I would imagine all this colour is a little more stimulating,.than an ad for the toronto star,...or whatever, the other thing is how smooth the ride is,and relatively quiet,.....with that familiar whine and whooshing sound as it takes off from a station............ JMH I think posted an audio link at one time with the sound of te Metro on it,.maybe he'll post it again Meanwhile here's a link relative to all the 'Artwork' in the Metro,..like getting a free visit to a museum (well not free ,you have to pay to get on I guess....hahaha) Remember putting those little blue transfers up near the big fans in te subway cars,.and they would stay there as they were being in effect vaccumed towards the roof of the car............... http://www.metrodemontreal.com/history/art/index.html Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Hi Joey, Did you live on 3rd ave? Do you have a sister Gertrude?? If so,she was one of my dear childhood friends way back in 1949 and then some! The only other names I recall in The Hunt family was Brenda and Tommy, maybe more will come to mind later on, that's if these are your siblings?? If you are Gerts brother, I would love to hear from her. sandra carlin (alias=Cookie carlin)

Did you all know that April the nineteenth is a very special day? I hearn that the city of Verdun is thinking of shutting everthing down next year.Did you hear that coachbim? Steve
Hey Les, I checked out the metro art work site. I always loved the metro. I knew the artist, Pierre Gaboriau, who designed the Berri de Montigny station. Funny that the metro tour only looked at Outremont and Jean Talon. I also checked out the Mordecai Richler clips from the CBC. He's one of my favourite authors and what I admired about him most is that he wasn't afraid to say it as it was. That interview with Patricia Smart made me shake my head in her critique of his last book and his statements about Quebec. He was dead on and the only reason she had a petition going among writers to dissociate themselves with Mordecai was because she was jealous that he was famous and she wasn't. Thanks for the info. I'll have to save and go back to the sites when I have more time.
Hi Les, Speaking of the blue transfers we used to get on the Metro, I still have some and I also have some old bus tickets... I haven't been on the Metro for quite some time, but I can still imagine the smell of it. ( Not a bad odor or anything). I can also taste or smell a pizza from Woodland! Have a good day, Claroleca
Hi Claroleca2,.........If you have a scanner,it would be neat to see some of those old bus tickets & transfers,.......MaggieMck ,has a couple of neat things in one of her photo albums,.....and some 6 cent bust tickets are one of them,..also a Natatorium Pass,.etc etc....... I know what you mean re: the Metro did have a distinct smell,....could have been the heated air? also Remember how some Metro Stations were really windy,....as soon as you opened the door at street level, you would feel the wind,.......and many stations the door would be harder to open ,generally while a train was just leaving the station and the air was being sucked away, creating almost like a vaccum effect .........................................................................................................................HF&RF

Hello Bahamas,...... Yes I like Cohen's stuff,......He has written a lot of music,..& various other works,......I prefer his more recent (last 10 years or so) ,.....although some of his early stuff is Ok ,.....oddly enough one of his most famous songs,."Suzanne",...is not one of my favourites,......(I don't hate it,..but I have heard it a lot),....we actually studied the 'meaning of that song ,as well as the Beatles song "A fool on the hill"..............we had a lot of different thoughts as to what it was al about ,.....most of them wrong........hahahahaha I recently saw something on TV about the Gal (Suzanne),.....she's kind of a Free Spirit ,.gal now living in California somewhere,.........blah blah blah in anycase Here is a link to one of many Leonard Cohen sites, http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/ I haven't gone all the way through it,.....but maybe you will. Leonard Cohen cont'd:the following is from Macleans Magazine ,and deals with the songwriter's recent problems ,stemming from an unscrupulous Business Partner, The conflict, which Cohen and others have tried to keep out of public view, has left him virtually broke -- he's had to take out a mortgage on his house to pay legal costs -- and facing a multi-million-dollar tax bill. But the artist, who is soon to release a new album with his collaborator -- and current girlfriend -- Anjani Thomas, is today remarkably calm about the potentially embarrassing conflict. Still, when he discovered last fall that his retirement funds, which he had thought amounted to more than $5 million (all figures U.S.), had been reduced to $150,000, he wasn't so sanguine. "I was devastated," Cohen says. "You know, God gave me a strong inner core, so I wasn't shattered. But I was deeply concerned." If you would like to read this story ,.then click on this link ,bringing you to a Macleans page,...'scroll down a bit as the story starts below some normal jibberish....................hahahahah http://www.macleans.ca/topstories/finance/article.jsp?content=20050822_110877_110877 Have Fun & Remember Verdun

I seem to Recall taking the bus to VCH on the really cold days as well,.....walked there many times,.....Remember all the scams to hand transfers out the window so our friends could get on te same bus,....or Remember smoking on the back of the bus,.(like the driver wouldn't know).............hahahahah Remember the tongue like gate that you had to push open to get off the back door,.....it was sort of like a sideways Rolling Stones emblem,.......hahahahah or having to 'ring ' the bell so the driver would stop at the next stop ..........and before those blue stiffpaper transfers,...they had those paper ones ,with all the routes on them,...and the driver had to punch the time you got on ,.on the transfer,......and i think you had an hour to use the transfer,........or something like that HF&RV

Hi Mom'45 ,.....what's going on up in CR,........some nut went in to the hospital,.and attacked some older woman who was a volunteer in the Gift Shop,? Just heard this on the news,.....The world is going nutty............that's a sad deal for the womans family,& co-workers,.....
Les_F Hadn't heard the news....just got in. Good thing he didn't do it a couple of weeks ago when I was up there for my CTR procedure (carpal tunnel release). Boy, am I ever a happy camper since I had this done. The hand is still sensitive, and I don't have all the range of motions back yet, but the doctor says all should be honkey-dorey in about 6 months time. So anybody who has this problem should at least check out this procedure. (Okay, now I'll get off my soapbox.) Good job you're doing, captain, of steering the ship back on track and keeping us on course. Cheers.
Hi Mom45 . I was scgheduled for the CTR ,..several years back,.had a date all set up ,.then they pushed it forward a bit,..and I had a trip sceduled for Montreal,.so I went and while I was gone they re-sheduled an earlier date,...I phoned from Montreal & Teresa told me they called to get me to get in earler,.....and I just couldn't make the time frame,..and so I still get annoyed every so often,.when the pain inexplicably arrives,...and then just as strangely seems to go away,....just last week my Dr,.mentioned that it may always bug me til I get the relief surgery done,......truth is though they don't really know what causes it,...but they know by slicing that band in the wrist,.that it alleviates the pain,..............Let me know how you feel in a few months,....and I may re-schedule,.Although I think nowadays the wait may be considerably longer,.......Hope it works for you Linda,..keep me posted. Hi Les, The Suzanne interview very interesting. It is the only song I like by Cohen as long as he didn't sing it! I remember that time in the sixties and being involved in the arts scene in Montreal. And I'm the one hungering for a Montreal Bagel. I think it's the St. Viateur place, I used to go to, and now I remember that the fried salami sandwich that I had was at Wilenskiy's. That place had so much character. Montreal had such flavour and atmosphere in the sixties. I remember hanging around the Boiler Room on Crescent and the Sir Winston Pub. Is the Boiler Room still there? Does anyone remember the Playboy club on de la Montagne and de Maisonneuve I believe? That was around the late sixties, early seventies...or should we go there? :) Dolly

"Five days ago I landed at Montreal's Dorval Airport, a thin man with a big appetite for all things edible, drinkable, and having to do with this city's great bard, the novelist Mordecai Richler. Good God, I've done it all, meeting, along the way, the people who knew Richler and miss him so terribly now that he is gone. So the annual parade for the Black Watch, has been told that they cannot use Sherbrooke Street, fotr their parade,.....that parts Ok ,..but they only did it 3 days before Sunday's Parade,......Here's the story as presented on the News page for CJADBlack Watch told to change parade route After 74 years, the Black Watch is being told it can't use Sherbrooke street anymore for it's annual parade, because Sherbrooke is now a dangerous material transit route. The regiment says it was made aware of the designation 4 years ago, but has always got an exemption. There was no exemption this year. The Black Watch was only told it can't use Sherbrooke Street yesterday, three days before Sunday's parade. He says they've been told to use other streets, but former Commander-in-Chief, Bruce Bolton says they shouldn't have to . More from Bruce Bolton Bolton says they'll keep trying to get the decision changed, but if not -- it'll go ahead on De Maisonneuve and Ste Catherine streets. I guess they have it under control,........but I'd be more worried why they would use a Main Street in Montreal as a Dangerous Material Site,...I wonder if they are planning to have a use for the street on Sunday,...........hahahahaha Seems like a Parade could get out of te way fairly quickly,.......but who knows? .........................................HF&RV

Hi MPU,....those pics you posted of the lane on Gordon,...was this the lane btwn...Gordon & Galt? or the lane btwn Gordon & Rielle ( one of the only lanes that opens on to Verdun Av..? Les, it is the lane between Gordon & Galt. The article you posted about the Black Watch Parade has me FUMING at Montreal #$%^&* A**HOLE politicians.....why, partly because my Uncle Ralph was a member of the Black Watch at the time of his death in Holland...... ...my Dad must be turning in his grave. Thank You for posting this item, I am very grateful that you did. I wonder if these politicians even know (or care) what sacrifices the Black watch has made for Canada? Or do they just think they are another marching band of guys in skirts? Perhaps that is the reason, they are confusing this with the gay pride parade............I am sorry if this venting has offended anyone. Ralph/m.p.u.
I had a message from Ernie Loiselle on my VHS Groups board. Ernie is a member here, but I don't think he posts very often, so I am pasting this message from him in VC.......... .....m.p.u.
Hi MPU ,.....would you extend the appropriate sentiment to Ernie for us Thanks .......................................................... As for the Black Watch thing I really was surprised that the City wouldn't want to preserve a traditon,.especially one with this History,......I can Remember going to the Black Watch (the Armoury I guess it was) ,....and watching Floor Hockey Games there,.......there was a league at the time called MAFFHL (Montreal Armed Forces Floor Hockey League),.....and the games were held in HMCS Donnacona,.as well as the various other Forces related buildings,......the tradtions of our defending forces 'should be preserved' .......there's no drain on the public purse,so a an hour or so march shouldn't be a problem,,,,,, .............................................................................................................HF&RV
Les, Thank you for the sentiments. It was more or less expected. To comment on your and Ralph's thread with regards to the Black Watch Annual Church Parade, to say the least I am appalled that the political machinering and swivel servants had the audacity to deny the event which had been a fixture of the Montreal Garrison for almost 60 years. I fail to comprehend why permission to go to church as a group was denied to a group, especially in this time of war that we find ourselves. How soon they forget, after the brou-ha-ha! that hit the national papers less than 2 weeks ago with regards to the governments decision not to order flags flown at half mast every time another Canadian soldier is killed in action (a move which I support) the least they could do was continue the commemeration and tradition of one of the finest miitary organizations in the world. Steeped with many stories of fame and valor the RHR of Canada is one of the few military units in Canada to be awarded the freedom of the city, which means they are permitted to march on city streets with Flags unfurled and bayonets fixed. The annual parade from the regimantal home on Blury St. to the Church of St. Andrews and St. Paul on Sherbrooke and back was always a time of solemn remembrance to the many young men of the regiment, who made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives defending the most precious of our blessings. The intelectual, political and religious freedoms we as Canadians enjoy. Maybe I'm just to jaded to appreciate the supposed mass safety concerns that our political wingnuts have by denying one of the finest military traditions we have from occupying a city street on a "busy" weekend afternoon. I missed the explanation on the mass pandemonium that diverting traffic from such an important artery in the metropolis would cause as I stared at the red borders of our flag and realized that it was a richer hue from the blood of the youth of our nation who serve and die at the behest. But wait.. I'm wrong, I guess they could have marched along the sidewalk in a column of two, pausing for stoplights and turning vehicles and still gone to church as a group....

I think it's a case of do as I say, not as I do. Looks like the march did happen along the intended route, and boy the Quebecers are mad as hornets: Jeff Heinrich, The GazettePublished: Monday, May 08, 2006 (For the full story see tommorow's Gazette)
The city of Montreal is upset that soldiers of Canada’s oldest Highland regiment broke the terms of a permit Sunday and marched on Sherbrooke St. W., a route reserved for the transport of hazardous materials.
The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada should not have disobeyed orders of the civil authority to keep its annual parade off Sherbrooke, an official said Monday.

I believe that what and who we are today is due to our life experiences. One of those experiences was the Quebec crisis, and life was never the same after that, at least as far as we once knew it. It took away our innocence, in a sense. Some people decided to leave, others stayed and more power to them! I don't really believe that we are being negative in reminiscing [spl?] the bad along with the good, to do so gives only a one-sided view of what we are made of. .....My humble opinion..... Dianne

StJB .........: It is not known why St-Jean-Baptiste came to be considered the patron saint of French Canada. One legend has it that a great many French-Canadians bearing that given name persuaded the journalist and patriot Ludger Duvernay to adopt it as the name of the national society of French-Canadians which he founded in 1834. In any case that was the name he chose, and the St-Jean-Baptiste Association (St-Jean-Baptiste Society from 1914 on) of Montreal took the maple leaf and the beaver as its emblems. The founding was celebrated 24 Jun 1834 by a banquet to which 60 guests were invited - Irish, US, and Canadian. Many among them sang their interpretations of patriotic songs, including George-Étienne Cartier who sang 'Ô Canada! mon pays! mes amours!' The celebration became annual, and gradually more elaborate, and spread to other localities in Quebec, in Acadia (1880), and in the francophone regions of Ontario, the Canadian west, and even the USA. The celebrations were suspended 1838-42 because of political troubles. ........................................... oddly enough 'Political Interference' was the reason for the suspension of this group in 1838-42,..............................Funny how an Originally Well Intentioned Group ,can be hijacked and knocked off track...........and start to follow a politically charged direction,.................. another odd thing is that this StJB group also selected the Beaver & the Maple Leaf,as their Emblems........I would imagine those have been long since changed as well.............Amazing what changes can be made,by a small number of dissidents. Here's the link to the whole story on this society (according to Canadian Encyclopedia site): http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=U1ARTU0003085 Now it is not uncommon to find mistakes on a lot of these Encyclopedia sites,..... but Here's the story as it appears there: Have Fun & Remember Verdun

I'm with you Dianne. To just dwell on the fun memories of Quebec, is to deny who we are and therefore not healthy. I certainly do not believe in an ongoing debate about Quebec politics but I thought this site wasn't just about "fluff", but respectful of members wanting to share their experiences, both good and bad and reaching out.. Maybe I misunderstood as I haven't been a member long, but to me this site has a wealth of interesting members with memories and experiences that need to be heard and shared, including their journey towards leaving Quebec. I would imagine that most of the members no longer live in Quebec, thus this site, unless I stand to be corrected. I don't believe in being a "Pollyanna". Life is too real! Dolly
Hello Sabby,.......I concur completely,........and recounts of days gone by are certainly the focal point ,(at least for the most part )of this site (as I'm led to believe), I doubt that you will ever find 'censorship' as it seems we are aludding to. We have been somewhat careful to not limit or censor (if you will) most things,.......but it can be a 'slippery slope' (to use an over used analogy)................all We would want to caution ourselves against is the Steady Downhill Venting ,.......as we all know is entirely possible when starting out to speak on any topic..............We (as Quebecers) have all had our share of 'annoyances' by the ruling party of the day........but I still believe that this is not the Forum to continue the reasons 'Why ' you or anyone else left LaBelle Province,.........and I certainly wouldn't want it to seem like it 's a language thing,......I doubt that any of us could have existed without at the very least ( a limited perhaps 'working knowledge' of the other Official language)..........Perhaps many of us were inspired to seek out other adventures (maybe inadvertently),.......but many of us did go on to Bigger & Better things ,.........and many of us still Kept a Contact (or in Contact) with Our Quebec roots.......through our friends,& of course family..................Now (and for the last few years) thanks to MaggieMck,......we've found a common denominator again ,.that allows us to enjoy some of Our Verdun Connections,....Regardless of where we live on this Planet,.......We also are Thankfull(at least I certainly am) for Our members who still live in Quebec,...as well as our members who live around the world..................As long as we Remember that so far we don't have to re-hash the old reasons & revive a very long in the tooth battle of why we didn't like a certain reign of power.............Many of Our Members as well as many other Quebecers,.....may have their feelings hurt,by what can appear to be Just another form of attack ..................I do realize that 'as in real life' only us Quebec'ers /Montrealers,....feel we have the right to voice these opinions (and I beleive we do) to critique the Province as a whole,.......but I would not want to see anything cause a divide ,or distraction from enjoying & celebrating Our collective Past's............So I'm not living as though some Unfair Things did Not Happen,............I just don't see the need to allow it be a days on end topic............We of all People should realize that it's a never ending Topic and very divisive at that............... Every Quebecer has a Story,......as does every Verdun Connections Member as well,......and we want to hear every single story,.............but I believe that for the sake of good health,.....we try to keep the more Positive ones to the fore front,.....We've heard every other Negative One for 40 years.................... .........................................History is interesting ,......and I would highly recommend the 'Molson Saga'..........a book that might surprise a lot of you ,..as this family had to deal with the same BS that we are talking about today,...............but they tried to do something about it,.....ie: building hospitals,.......etc etc ,.......and John Molsons friend s of the day, were some of the most crucial Founding members of Our Country..........that we all enjoy today: CANADA...................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun.................................
Re:St Jean Baptiste Society. Thank you for your very informative tract, but surely time can change things our way. They are or should be outmoded. Who are they to have the last word on our customs and operations. Should we not do something to bring them down in the same way we are told the democratic way. Maybe we could teach them the true meaning of Democracy. As they say if you have a cancer you cut it out...............Thank you,Unscathed big a
Hello Les, This is Dolly. History, as you say, IS interesting and I understand your concerns of why the topic of leaving Quebec might be seen as divisive. I don't believe that is the members' intentions here, and I don't believe in rants and negative thinking either. God knows life is too short! However, those are real memories by real people, a part of Quebec HISTORY that is interesting because it impacted and is still impacting Canadians. However, I hate political arguments. They go nowhere. My interest is people and the stories I hearded from members were positive. And none of them had a last name spelled Molson. We all contribute in our own way. So, for a change of topic ---- Summer's coming. What was your favourite ice cream parlour in Verdun? Your best flavour? And are flavours better today then in the sixties/seventies?
I remember Cheyne's Cartage. I went thru elementary school (Woodland Class of 61) with a dude named Keith Cheyne. He lived on Egan, and his dad was the owner, The place was located on that street that is a continuation of Champlain just the other side of Church, near the corner of Hickson. It was there till the mid '60s
The St.Jean Baptiste Society was of course born out of the Catholic Church. Since the Plains of Abraham, the French felt that population was essential to survival. In those days, numbers meant safety from Indian attacks. It became the job of the Church to encourage birth, help lifestyles and record names. This was done at Baptism. Every Baptism meant another name. At every Baptism the story of John the Baptist was told. Unlike the stories of the apostles, the story off St.John is relived at every birth. The English Catholic Churches see St. John as a religious figure, not political and pay more attention to the St.Vincent Society which is a wonderful help and support group. Ed
Is there any connection with the George Brown Cartage Company which was also on Hickson and founded by George Brown who was also a councillor for the City of Verdun? Guy
UnscathedBigA, There is something that I don't understand in your messages #8758 & #8769....you mention "WHY THEY HAVE SO MUCH SAY IN OUR POLITICS. wHO VOTED FOR THEM???" and "Should we not do something to bring them down in the same way we are told the democratic way".....The St.JeanBaptiste Society is not an elected political party, they are just an organization. No one ''votes for them''.......no one would ''bring them down''. The Parti Quebecois is the provincial separatist party that has caused a large amount of the unrest in Quebec, but has at times while in power, made some very positive decisions that I feel have been good for Quebec. The Bloc Quebecois is a federal separatist party that has never been in a ruling position, but does have a lot of support from Quebec voters. My children all went to French primary and secondary school, and are fully bilingual. My son, in what I think was his first year of high school, won an award from the St.Jean.... group for having an outstanding academic record in French, and we went to a ceremony at their headquarters on Sherbrooke Street.....let me tell you, I was the proudest ''tete carre'' father in the place (ok, I was probably the only one). I am proud to tell anyone that I grew up in Verdun, Quebec, Canada. Ralph.
St. Jean de Baptiste is the Patron Saint of Quebec and the Sciety was founded in 1834. In the 1830's Lower Canadaians of French and English descent founder various charitable organizations such as the Saint Georges Society, St Patricks society and saint andrews society. these organizations were formed
Oh my the computer gremlins are alive and well....I'll try again....in Quebec the St Jean Baptiste Society promoted the French Canadain heritage, language and culture. Anyway, I enjoyed the parade when I was a young girl. So according to some people we should not discuss politics and religion. So, what topics can we discuss that wont upset the status quo......How about sex?.......Di
Well....hello......I thought everybody had gone to bed....it is 1:27 here on the East Coast....and I am enjoying a glass of wine...well, make that 2?....hehe
Hi happydi,....according to who are you reffering when you mention, that politics nor religion are topics of conversation? .......I don't recall anyone saying anything of the sort'......I do recall thinking it would be nice if we didn't go too far down the path of dissention,...by ways of Venting on the political issues,......as for the religion topic ,....I would think only a fool would consider stirring that pot,.....even by mentioning it,..........but I can't seem to recall that topic as having been an issue of late either,...................but regardless of what some narrow minds may think,......we will still enjoy most topics ,....and when we feel they may be headed in an unfriendly direction ,........We'll change them,(if that's Ok )....................hahahahahhahaha ......................................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Hi Ralph, I am sure you are aware the behind all this bill 101 etc. is the narrow minded work of the st.j.b.soc. WHEN i HEARD THE LEADER OF THIS SOCIETY TELL US THAT ON THE 24 TH OF JUNE THEY WOULD ALLOW THE STORES TO BE OPEN ONLY THIS ONE TIME,,,,,PULEESE , dO YOU HONESTLY THINK THIS IS THE ONLY ISSUE, WHAT ABOUT THE ONE THAT IS PRESENTLY WALKING TO QUEBECX iF THEY ARE NOT VOTED IN AND ONLY THE MEMBERS HAVE THE POWER TO RUN THE SYSTEM I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THIS WORKS............uNSCATHED BIG A
UnscathedBigA You sure sound like a very unhappy camper. BTW, netiquette says that when you type in all caps.....that's like shouting. Not a criticism...just a fact. Cheers.
Hi Les: Well there was Post # 8776 was one that said we shouldn't talk religion....well I know some topics are considered controversial and can get people emotionally upset.....however....as we go through life we are effected by all sorts of events and circumstances that take place in our lives and those events do help to shape us as individuals and they do form the basis for our beliefs. .......Over the past year or so that I've been a member I have read just about every post and have been thoroughly entertained, wonderful remembering the great times we shared in Verdun/Montreal, had a few great laughs, some have brought a tear or two, some have made me pause and think, some got me a little rattled. But no one has posted anything that has made me so angry that I will reply without thinking it over very carefully. I will post a rebuttle but I usually will say it is only my opinion and I do not wish to offened anyone. ......Dianne
Hi Steve: You are absolutely correct...we all have our own beliefs, and thank goodness for that because life would be so dull if we all thought and believed in the same things. Basically, though, on VC we do have so much in common, we are like one big happy family, but like all familes we will have our differences at times, but like all families we should stick together through thick and thin....... Are these characters hugging? Well, heres a hug to all members on VC from the East Coast....Di
Dianne, Your message has a great comparison of VC being one big happy family, at least most of the time. When we realize that people from almost every province, as well as many US states, and other parts of the world post messages here because of some connection to Verdun...............I am overwhelmed at times. We could all use more hugs, here is another one from Deux Montagnes, Quebec......mpu
Hi, Please do not take offense ti the capital letters, the problem is I am having trouble with the shift..no I was not trying to make it look like I was shouting, I guess that there is a lot of nuances to learn. I am not an unhappy camper, but all the messages that I read about families being sad about leaving the province, I had to mention my misgivings no hurt intended. Thank you Unscathed big a
Hi UnscathedBigA: I am sorry that we jump to conclusions , it is a bad habit and one that I try my best not to fall into......to err is human....so forgive us and we will try harder to be more understanding and perhaps wait for an explanation before passing judgement. Dianne
Sharon........well I was trying to be diplomatic and didn't want to post anything that might be considered offensive to some people and get everybody in a snit....hehe!! But we do know, don't we ....lol.....how men think or what they think.....the expression tells it all......Dianne

Hi: This morning I looked at the MemberInformation page and where it says Role in This Group: Member and in the box below it says Cancel membership I am wondering why it says that as I have not cancelled my membership. MSN is terribly slow today, have to repeatedly hit refresh in order to open a thread.....really annoying!!! Hope ya'll have a super day.....Dianne
Thanks Steve......Last night we had a tremendous storm! Today the sun is shining and it's 15C. The Maritme spring is behind the rest of the country. We moved here in May 1972 and when we left Montreal on May 6th it was very cold and there was a bit of snow on the ground. When we arrived here on May 7th the weather was absolutely gorgeous, the temp was around 75F, and I finally began to accept the fact that we left Montreal. My bubble was about to burst....May 10th we woke up to one of the worst blizzards of the century, or so the locals said, and had no power and since we were and still are quite rural, we had no water because we were on a well with a pump....Then a few days later I discovered we had black flies....this year they seem to be extra hungry....Linda and others on Vancouver Island are lucky not to have those little blood sucking b........'s!! I guess we must like it here, we've been here for 34 years.......Enough lolly gagging....back to work....Dianne

Leonard Cohen cont'd: the following is from Macleans Magazine ,and deals with the songwriter's recent problems ,stemming from an unscrupulous Business Partner, The conflict, which Cohen and others have tried to keep out of public view, has left him virtually broke -- he's had to take out a mortgage on his house to pay legal costs -- and facing a multi-million-dollar tax bill. But I was deeply concerned." Les_F Hadn't heard the news....just got in.
I had those links reversed,..this one is the list of many different places in Montreal,.....and the latter is a neat & well done little film named 'Montreal Moments' watch the film it's kind of cool,.......it's different & well done,...... I have been looking for different ways to perhaps add something different to Our Site, not in the format, but more to try & add some more 'Life ' to the site in terms of perhaps Music ,.& Sound to go with ,whatever we already have,.........but I am still in the learning stages of webdesign ,.......So don't hold your breath,.....but I will try to learn 'How To' do some stuff for us (time permitting ) ,..... Here's the link for that should have been in the previous post,........and vice-versa http://www.nuitsdemontreal.com/english/musees/musees.htm but check out the artists who did that last link,.....the work is good ,...that creative: may be a little far off,......but, Wouldn't it be neat, if we could have some of Our Photo Albums be in motion,.......as if a picture comes alive,.........then return to being a still pic,........I think it would be cool ,....but MSN may be somewhat limiting ,as it doesn't support alot of technology that isn't solely microsoft based. .........However those are thoughts for improvement,.and I'm a ways away from trying it for awhile yet,............So in the meantime; havefun&RememberVerdun

:) Dolly
Sabby, although I was too young to go inside, I definitely checked the outside of the Playboy Club which was on Aylmer Street. m.p.u.

Hi Sandy,......... here's another excerpt from writers review of a day in the footsteps of Mordecai, ( my words not his),......... With Richler on the mind, we visit the Sir Winston Churchill Pub (Winnie's to the locals), where the novelist's favorite barmaid, Margo MacGillivray, serves us cold Molson beers. Margo, a pretty, vivacious middle-aged woman in leather pants, was the inspiration for Betty, the barmaid in Barney's Version, and Winnie's made its appearance as Dink's, a stronghold of fine Anglophone boozing. a funny sense of humour for sure,.....a true Montrealer (Sarcasm/Direct/Funny) as for one of his favourite restaurants , right you are with: " Le Mas des Oliviers" his table was ,table #28 , bon Appetite: ...............Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Hi Sandy ,.....don't forget old Mordecai used to like to go to 'Moishes' Steak House as well................must be some serious DO-RE-Mi,......in the writing business,...cause he sure wasn't hanging around in some costly places. Larry Lighter, Moishe's soft spoken commander,..according to the article: another excerpt from the article: The mission, as you may recall, involved sampling the favorite vices of Barney Panofsky, the protagonist of Richler's last novel Barney's Version: Montecristos (the Dominican cigars), medium-fats on rye (a spectacular brisket served at the legendary Schwartz's Deli), single malts (preferably Macallan whisky), the veal-marrow hors d'oeuvre at L'Express restaurant, XO cognac, marbled rib steaks at Moishe's Steakhouse, and caffeine. Good God, I've done it all, meeting, along the way, the people who knew Richler and miss him so terribly now that he is gone. The last item on my list was the XO cognac, which I sip at a restaurant called Toqu챕!, perhaps the finest of Montreal's newish (circa 1993) restaurant. ..............................Have Fun & Remember Verdun (and go out and get Barney's Vision by Richler ,for a read on Montreal.............)

So the annual parade for the Black Watch, has been told that they cannot use Sherbrooke Street, fotr their parade,.....that parts Ok ,..but they only did it 3 days before Sunday's Parade,...... Here's the story as presented on the News page for CJAD Black Watch told to change parade route After 74 years, the Black Watch is being told it can't use Sherbrooke street anymore for it's annual parade, because Sherbrooke is now a dangerous material transit route.

It looks like Angel's was a success. The Toronto area members are quite. Steve
Hi Les, There is not much people can say, but sorry about the really crummy news!! Hang in there. BrownBlvd.

“We’re extremely concerned, because the Black Watch is the army,” said Jacques-Alain Lavallée, spokesperson for the downtown Ville Marie borough, which issued the permit.
“What sort of society is it when the army doesn’t comply with the rules? They’re soldiers defying authority.”
Interesting ,I hadn't read the Gazette story,...as lately I've been busy with other stuff,.......but I'm glad they continued the tradition,.....and I would suspect there will be little noise made over this,....at least I hope there isn't ,......Noone needs the aggravation of a few fools, over stepping their municipal power,....I beleive the majority of people are fed up with the nonsense, and really wouldn't want to return to the assisne regulations that were being imposed on everyone,..the province has taken almost 35+ years to become somewhat stable again,......and it could all disappear again very quickly ,with another show of political instability,......real estate would again plummett,......I've seen it happen in business when an owner of a company runs the thing into the ground ,.and then just before they, completely go under,.....they smarten up and change the management team & bring in new people who know how to run it properly,...then 'without' fail, these same fools upon seeing their business resurrected,Think that they are the genius's and start doing it 'their way' again,...and it tanks again,..sometimes to never return to it 's one time stature...... I really hope that stuff doesn't start again,........but let's not let it 'get to us' as there is no sense us fighting this un-winnable arguement .(especially here ),....it stirs to many dormant feelings.......as Winston and a few other members have pointed out ,..We won't let it break our Spirit,.....regardless of how much it annoys us............ ....................................have fun & Remember Verdun....................................

I wonder if perhaps, prior to all the negative stuff that happened in La Belle Province,. which we all are more than familiar with,.......anyone Remembers, the good stuff which were your 'memories' that brought you to 'Find' this site(in the first place) ,.......and re-hashing that old crap ,.just isn't worth it,......So if you have found a site, that you 'like' & caters to political agendas,....then I would think you should follow it,.......and leave this one to more user friendly (as in our members) who may be of different linquistic backgrounds, but 'share' our Common background of Having been from Verdun,.......and if that means leaving the site or dropping out (again in some cases),.....then always Remember to Have Fun & Remember Verdun,........... ..................................but do it elsewhere.

Les, Sounds like it was a moving and significant ceremony. Something you won't forget.
Every Quebecer has a Story,......as does every Verdun Connections Member as well,......and we want to hear every single story,.............but I believe that for the sake of good health,.....we try to keep the more Positive ones to the fore front,.....We've heard every other Negative One for 40 years.................... .........................................History is interesting ,......and I would highly recommend the 'Molson Saga'..........a book that might surprise a lot of you ,..as this family had to deal with the same BS that we are talking about today,...............but they tried to do something about it,.....ie: building hospitals,.......etc etc ,.......and John Molsons friend s of the day, were some of the most crucial Founding members of Our Country..........that we all enjoy today: CANADA.......... .........................Have Fun & Remember Verdun.................................
Ralph.
Wasn't John Babtist that Babtised Jesus not Jean. Steve
Realy I don't think Religion should be brought up on this site. Steve
St. Jean de Baptiste is the Patron Saint of Quebec and the Sciety was founded in 1834. In the 1830's Lower Canadaians of French and English descent founder various charitable organizations such as the Saint Georges Society, St Patricks society and saint andrews society. these organizations were formed
OOps, I hit the wrong button....as I was saying....these societies were charatable and social institutions, however,
Oh my the computer gremlins are alive and well....I'll try again....in Quebec the St Jean Baptiste Society promoted the French Canadain heritage, language and culture. Anyway, I enjoyed the parade when I was a young girl. So according to some people we should not discuss politics and religion. So, what topics can we discuss that wont upset the status quo......How about sex?.......Di
I dunno Diannem but I gotta admit it would probably get all 600+ members talking....probably all in agreement. Cheers.
Hi Linda: Yeah, that would be a First.......hehehe!!!!! Lets Have Fun..... but don't remember anything controversial!!! Dianne
Do I sense some dissention mounting!!!!!!
Well....hello......I thought everybody had gone to bed....it is 1:27 here on the East Coast....and I am enjoying a glass of wine...well, make that 2?....hehe
Oh...what dissention...?
In all seriousness, there are 2 things even friends never should discuss, religion and politics. Wait!!..maybe 3 things, add romantic affairs.
By the way Les, I think HappyDi2 is drunk....
So HappyDi2 wanna talk some sex..(((nod..nod..wink...wink...))))
hi, THAT WAS THEN. BUT HOW ABOUT NOW...........wHERE DID THEY GO WRONG???????????
i would likke to say thHI
Hi Ralph, I am sure you are aware the behind all this bill 101 etc. is the narrow minded work of the st.j.b.soc. WHEN i HEARD THE LEADER OF THIS SOCIETY TELL US THAT ON THE 24 TH OF JUNE THEY WOULD ALLOW THE STORES TO BE OPEN ONLY THIS ONE TIME,,,,,PULEESE , dO YOU HONESTLY THINK THIS IS THE ONLY ISSUE, WHAT ABOUT THE ONE THAT IS PRESENTLY WALKING TO QUEBECX iF THEY ARE NOT VOTED IN AND ONLY THE MEMBERS HAVE THE POWER TO RUN THE SYSTEM I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THIS WORKS............uNSCATHED BIG A
hI rALPH
Hey....rainy day man 44.........................
LMAO.....geez, i'm getting aroused...LOL
I am sorry, but I honestly don't understand the message / question in post #8790...................Ralph.
Dianne...Everbody has their own believe for religion. Steve

Dianne He probably was hoping for a bottle (or a glass) of that wine you had last evening, lol
Yeah, probably, ......I am sure everyone thought I had a bottle of wine, too....lol
Neat attachment....but did you notice....the whole bottle of wine filled the glass just once. lol
Yup.....I guess it depends on the size of the glass.....
i thought size didn't matter!!!!
at least i hope it doesn't...
Thank you Unscathed big a
What a computor is to say every morning. http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~geoffo/humour/flattery.html Steve
I forgot to tell you to type in your name. Steve
Hi UnscathedBigA: I am sorry that we jump to conclusions , it is a bad habit and one that I try my best not to fall into......to err is human....so forgive us and we will try harder to be more understanding and perhaps wait for an explanation before passing judgement. Dianne
Hi Diane, Thank you for responding, I hope we keep in touch.unscathed big A
you see Dianne...you should stick to chatting about sex....LOL
Steve got your email....LMAO.....
sex is mostly in the mind or so some people say....lol.....
>>>sex is mostly in the mind, or so some people say....lol<<< Well Dianne, ya know, they DO say a lot of men think with...ummm....you know.
Sharon........well I was trying to be diplomatic and didn't want to post anything that might be considered offensive to some people and get everybody in a snit....hehe!! But we do know, don't we ....lol.....how men think or what they think.....the expression tells it all......Dianne
men think with their little heads
I think that's what your getting at........but it's not our fault....it's in our genes...!!!!
rainy day man 44 It's been a blast....but.....maybe we should be careful...and end the conversation before the censors us and puts us in for being naughty from Dianne
i haven't even begun to be naughty...
>>>men think with their little heads<<< I'm not the one who said "little" hahahaha

Hi: This morning I looked at the MemberInformation page and where it says Role in This Group: Member and in the box below it says Cancel membership I am wondering why it says that as I have not cancelled my membership. MSN is terribly slow today, have to repeatedly hit refresh in order to open a thread.....really annoying!!! Hope ya'll have a super day.....Dianne
Dianne...I think you press that if you want to cancel your membership. It's raining in Ottawa today.April showers and all. Steve
