and he also has a "Verdun Connection"! good one Steve!   I always chuckle when I see his commercials. He's come a long way from his origins?

I just love the commercials that William Shatner does.  Most of them are absolutely hilarious, don't poke fun at anyone (except maybe himself) and also don't make me feel like I don't have any brains.   I, for one, love them!!!!   Cheers.

All week we have had the pleasure of watching the Snow Birds practice.  Are they ever loud.....ya can't hear yourself talk....better yet, my other half can't hear me talk, or so he says....lol.    I do believe the rest of Canada is in for a big treat when they come to your town as some of the manoeuvers are spectacular.   Cheers.

Hi Sandy,   I think I missed that photo of VCHS or I'm having a senior moment.  It was a brand new school and I still remember walking up the steps and looking down outside the glass doors and seeing a huge rat.  I'll never forget it.  Well, it was in a field, so maybe it was a cat but I remember thinking that sure was a huge rat.  Ah youth!   Dolly

les__f MSN said...

I know I posted some VCHS pictures last week ,but I don't Remember which ones they may have been,............Can you Recall what was posted,.........I will try to re-post them again,......unless it was someone else who posted them,.then I look forward to seeing those pics too !   ..................................................................HF&RV

Hi Popdog,.......That's the great thing about living on the mainland of Canada,....you can make those quick trips to Montreal,.....So Verdun is changing a bit,..wider sidewalks on Wellington St ?  .....I guess all the shops are still real busy,if you can't find parking,......That means the city must be doing well,......I read somewhere that they want to turn Verdun into a popular place to live again,.....aside from NunsIsland being a desirable place to live ,...the old city of Verdun,...would be a good place to invest (interms of reno's to an old three stroy building),......some of those old plaes could be made to be quite nice as single family homes,..........Although the one thing that would be a deterent ,would be I guess the always instability of the Politics of the area,..............if they could coax some big business to move HQ back towards the city of Montreal,...then i think that would go along way to helping investors,........ but at least you got to have a visit in the old Homestead,........maybe next trip you can search out that Steamie & Spruce Beer Shop,........Did you get to take some Montreal Treats back to Ottawa, with you ?   Mind you, can you, go over to Hull and buy Smoked Meat (there must be some good spots over there ?).........In anycase Thanks for the Update from Verdun..........................................   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Have Fun & Remember Verdun^^^^^^

I believe the name of the steamie place is Patate Dore.  Going from Ottawa, cross the Chaudiere Bridge, go past 3 or 4 intersections and its on the left hand side of the street, beside the Legion.  At least thats where it was prior to me leaving beautiful downtown Kars on the Rideau.  Another good spot (if you want a taste of St. Henri) is the Whip taverne.   Dave

mom1945-linda MSN said...

My sister, who still lives in Montreal, said that St. Henri is the newest "in-place" to live these days.  Apparently they're converting all those really old flats into lovely, trendy places to live (not cheap, either)!   My grandmother (may she rest in peace) would be turning over in her grave if she heard this.  She and my grandad lived and brought up her family there after immigrating back around 1912, and saved their pennies for the day they could move up to Ville Emard.    Cheers.

les__f MSN said...

I'm glad to hear that Montreal/Verdun must have gotten some 'infrastructure' money from the Fed Gov't I would guess,..as they were astarting to dish out the grants for city's to re-vitalize themselves,......good to hear that Wellington Street did something ,...I like the idea of removing those old hydro-poles,...Have they all gone undergroung now ? if so that's great,.........i'd like to see them remove the parking meters too,......I always hated that look,...but if they are still there then,I would think some of the revenue ,would go to keeping the City Clean,............Remembre in Verdun in the Springtime,...they would get those big streetsweepers, going ,the watertrucks too,....and they would have teams of city workers (is that an Oxymoron ?........hahahaha  City & Workers in same sentance.............)  anyway teams of workers with brooms would sweep the sand from the sidewalks ,and the city would take on a whole 'new' look ,for the rest of Spring and into the Summer,.......i also seem to Remember wire mesh type of trash cans chained to poles on almost every block or second block,...and people actually were pretty good at keeping the streets clean,.........(the lanes ,.well that was another story)...........hahahaha ......................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun

les__f MSN said...

So Hull is no more,........well I learn something new everyday,.....Gatineau it is then,......I would imagine that judging by the size of Ottawa these days,.....then Hull(sorry Gatineau),......must be equally as large,........I couldn't believe how Ottawa had grown ,when I was there a few years back,........the traffic & the buildings were jammed in everywhere,......not the the old Ottawa that was stuck in my memory bank .......as for a steamie place in Gatineau(it's really Hull isn't it.........hahahaha) ,but as for one being caled Patate Dore,..........i wonder if this was a transplanted store owner from Ville Lasalle,......Remember there was a little Chip joint near the pool hall on Centralle,...in Lasalle,....and it was called  'Dore's' as well , fed many a high school student on some good old greasy fries,.....(more like fed studenmts who were going into the poolhall & skipping school)..........hahahahahah  Personally I like dgoing to the '50' club,.....and there was a gal (an old gal we though then,........hahahah) she may have been 40-ish,...her name was Suzanne,......and she made Fantastic Hamburgers,.....wich you could wash down with a quart of 50,......or une gros mol,instead,........and many a lunch was had in there as well......... ahhh  what's that old saying about 'Youth' being wasted on the Young'............hahahaha                                                                        Have Fun & Remember Verdun

les__f MSN said...

Hi Mom'45 I think your sister is right ,..aside from StHenri converting many old factory's into Condos,.they were among the first to re-vitalize their area,......also PointStCharles is undergoing the same transformation to a degree,.....the whole Greater Montreal area has been in transformation for a while now and that seemed to begin with the clean up and refurbishing ,and reclamation of once dull land ,.and making a beautiful green belt almost all around the island,...with new walking paths ,.cycle paths,....(Montreal could be pchyco-paths ........hahahahaha) but the green spaces along the river and the old Lachine Canal are trully amazing,.....and must have required huge amounts of dedication, and Cash,...........but it is getting done,........it' true this is the time of year when the 'Vibrancy (is that a word.......hahaha) ,starts to show around the city,.....Montreal is reborn every spring,....(I had forgotten those feelings and sights of watching the City become Alive again,...after a Winter of Grey ,....).......the mountain starting to turn green again ,and the downtown outdoor  Patio's are being spruced up,....the parks are all getting ready,....Remember the City of Verdun workers coming and putting 'the Swings back up,from there winter hibernation spots,........the park monitor's are all being chosen for the different parks,,....and soon all the kids stuff in the parks will be out again , Remember the 'Stilts'..............hahahahaha  Everyone took a shot at those didn't they,....and then that 'fresh coat of City of Verdun Green,...was applied to the doors & window frames of the old buikding in StWillibrord park,......Remember where old 'pops' would sit during the winter period and police the kids from staying too long inside after skating for hours,....and when this time of year rolled around ,we would only go in to get a drink of water from that old water fountain just inside the door,......and you could hear the echoes of all the kids vioces revererating inside those old walls,..............MPU  posted a picture of that old bukding a few months back,........Do you still have those pics MPU,....that old building that separated the playgroungd side of the park from the (rinks in Winter) and the baseball diamonds of spring & summer.................I guess all 'the boards' are down and put away by now,..... ................................................................................HF&RV

les__f MSN said...

Hi Sandy yes I Remember those pics,....I will post those again,I will leave out the one of the gym area,..but you can get that one from Steve's post,..if there are any pics you see and like ,feel free to save them if you like,.....also if there are any you can Remember seeing ,and would like to see again,...then ask away,..and we'll try to find them again for you,......and anyone else outthere wishing to see a previously posted photo,.....most of the members will most likely have saved some of the posted pics,.and would be happy to find & re-post something ,I generally leave pics up for a day or two,.sometimes longer,..but after a few days if I think the messages I posted have been read,.then I remove them again 'freeing ' up some of my alloted 3mb's that each of us as members have,...in order to continue posting other stuff,.....blah balh blah.............hahahahaha    Here you go Sandy:   Those were long hallways,........and if you used the reflection in the classroom doors carefully ,you could keep an eye on teachers or Brothers ,that were skuliking around looking for wayward students ,.who were supposed to be in Class...............hahahahaha      That was a unique design in it's day,.......I have never seen a picture of the 'whole' school in the same frame,.....I would suspect with a telephoto &  somewhat wide angle lens on an old 35mm camera,....you could probably get the whole school in the shot, from across the Acqueduct or at least on the Acqy's proeperty,......there was also a residence building off to the right of this photo Remember that ? I have seen the whole school from an aerial photograph ,.I think I may have even posted it a few years back ,but it may be just power of suggestion (who knows?)   these classrooms were over on the Girls side of the school,,.Remember segragation,,,,........hahahahahaha I'll find more photo's and post 'em up here for you..........   Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Fantastic   MPU ,  and much Appreciated,....just the look of the ruts in the ice surface ,make me Remember skating around and on the occasional fall you would be quickly reminded to watch out for those 'ruts'............hahahahaha and the old 'shack' sure looked inviting and a much needed place to retreat to,once your feet and whole body were sufficiently frozen.........Remember the skin on your face would feel like  its ready to crack once the warmth of the building started to thaw us out............hahahahaha  Great Stuff Tahnaks Again                                                                                   .......HF&RV

les__f MSN said...

Anyone know what    Tahnaks ,  means ................hahahahahahah    as bubbacut used to say,........."I don't know why I try to type fast,.....cause I can't"..................................hahahahahaha         Oh well I'll keep trying,....... always Remember not to quit, one day I may get better..........hahahahaha   which reminds me of an old Poem of the same nature,                                                  Don't Quit   When things go wrong as they sometimes will.
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill.
When funds are low and the debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about.
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

MPU   Thanks, again, for those outside pics.  Funny, but I cannot for the life of me remember ever getting my skates sharpened.  I remember walking from home to the rink and back on the skates (on cement sidewalks or paved roads) because my mom wouldn't let me wear my boots as they were stolen from the shack once.  I don't know how I ever skated on them not sharpened though!  They must have been like those two-bladed cheesecutters we had as real young kids.   I just love those outdoor winter pics.   Cheers.

True story:   Today, down in Parkesville, was sitting in Timmy's having coffee/doughnut and an older man (& his wife) asked if they could join me at my table as the place was packed.   He started the conversation with "Mind if I join you, you look like a very friendly lady.  Where I come from people were always very friendly."  Well that just begged my asking "Where do you come from?"   You got it.......Verdun.......Fred Purchase from Hickson Ave. prolly in the early 50's.   I just about fell off my chair.  Somehow Les_F's saying "HF & RV" works for everybody who has ever lived there.   Cheers.

This 'temporary' measure should almost be nearing it's removal time ,..What do you think? 1917 - Personal income tax introduced as temporary war measure; Canadians capture Vimy Ridge; conscription enacted; 1,630 persons killed in munitions ship explosion at Halifax; in Alberta Louise McKinney and Roberta MacAdams become first woman members of an Empire legislature; The Canadian Press formed.   mind You it's not been in place quite 100 years yet.   hahahahahahah                        HaveFun&RememberVerdun

Taxes whether they be the income tax,.or the GST (grab&steal tax),...are supposedly temporary,....but even the present day gov't of the Harper administration,.is very slowly pretending to live up to it's promise of lowering the GST by 1% initialy,.and then in smaller increments over a five year proposal,.....but meanwhile they will also repeal the tax reductions of the previous admin...   so there really wouldn't be a savings ,as they say  "one hand Giveth,.......& one hand Taketh away" hahahahahahaha               ......................the People get the Government ,they Deserve....... or so they say ( again whoever they are)...............hahahahahahah   ...............................................Have     fun    &     Remember      Verdun..

Then the days got worse and worse
And now you see I've gone completely
out of my mind,

AND

[chorus 1]
They're coming to take me away,
Haha, they're coming to take me away,
Ho ho, hee hee, ha ha,
To the funny farm
Where Life is Beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see
Those Nice Young Men
In their Clean White Coats
And they're coming to take me AWAY,
HA HAAAAA

You thought it was a joke,
and so you LAUGHED, YOU LAUGHED
When I had said that losing you
Would make me flip my lid,

RIGHT?

You know you laughed.
I HEARD you laugh, you laughed
And laughed and laughed
And then you left,
And now you see I'm Utterly Mad

AND

[chorus 2]
They're coming to take me away,
Haha, they're coming to take me away,
Ho ho, hee hee, ha ha,
To the Happy Home with Trees and Flowers
And Chirping Birds and basket weavers
Who sit and smile and
Twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to Take me Away,
HAHAAAAAAAAA

I cooked your food,
I cleaned your house,
And this is how you pay me back
For all my kind unselfish loving deeds

Hi Dolly:

I was mistaken about who asked my husband to go to the dance at the Douglas. It was Father McGlynn. It was a one time affair during Christmas. Father asked if a group of guys would go to the Douglas for a party. There were about twenty who went and it was held in the female adolescent wing. As they walked through the corridors all the doors were opened and then locked behind them. The room where it was held was locked and that was a strange experience knowing that they were locked in. The girls who were teenagers all seemed to be drugged. They only went the one time. I don't know if there were other functions held there but it makes sense to me that there should have been other groups going to socialize with the patients.

That's about all that there is to tell about it.....Dianne

happydi2 MSN said...

Hi Dolly:

Paul just mentioned something else......when the guys were in the room with the girls you can imagine how awkward the situation was.....finally someone put a record on the record player and one of the guys asked a girl to dance, then after a minute or two the rest of the guys asked the other girls to dance. Paul said the girls seem to hang on to the guys for dear life......one girl became very agitated when a dance ended, she didn't want to let go of the boy and the orderly had to intervene and take the girl away....Very sad isn't it? ....Dianne

Hi:

I don't think the young men who went to the party at the Douglas found anything to joke about after spending a few hours with the girls. I have to commemd them for going and perhaps some went out of curiosity, some because of sterotypical thinking, but knowing personally two of the boys who went it was out of compassion and they honestly felt they could do something nice for the girls. My husband doesn't talk too much about it but he has a special affinity with people with disabilities.

There have been a few thoughts that the Douglas was Haunted,...the result of it having been an Indian Burial Ground at one time,...and that while digging for the foundation of the 1st building,...they uncovered bones,...I had never heard this story until reading it yesterday while searching for the pictures,.... I had however always believed that the lands were part of a large Farm at one time,...........but who knows?   The Douglas has been there since 1888 (I think that's right) and of course it had it's share of scandals over the years ,..as well as a CIA connection from the 50's ,....dealing with the effects of certain drugs,..on the inmates,  (or patients ,as they would be referred to today)..........Remember the grounds were surrounded by those black wrought iron fences,.....but I believe those have been removed,.and access to the grounds is open to all,........those grounds were certainly well kept ,always looked great.....   ........but in searching for evidence of the lands original use,.....I have only found evidence of the property having been used as a Farm.   Here's a photo of one of it's original farm animals:    ..They are coming to take me away.............haha                                              HF&RV

Linda, It is true that not all Douglas patients were 'mental'. A close family friend from Emmanuel Baptist Church was at one time interned there because of his epilepsy. He was a very friendly intelligent person who worked for many years for CN, but suffered from 'fits' and thence, the Douglas became a home away from home. Witnessing one of his attacks was a very scary thing for a child to see.              Ralph.

happydi2 MSN said...

Hi: I do not believe all patients were "mental", but there was very little knowledge of diseases like epilepsy. Mental illness must be the least understood disease there is. Also Linda said her dad was there while waiting for a room at Ste.Annes Vets Hospital.

A couple of days ago there were pictures posted of the Hotel Dieu Hospital, was that the French equivalent of the Douglas? Anyhow, a few years ago there was a documentary on CBC TV about unwed mothers back in the 40's a 50's being institutionalized and were against their will given hysterectomies. These girls were called Duplessis' girls. The story is rather vague, perhaps there is someone out there who can verify this....Les? It is interesting that by the 1960s heart transplants were being performed in Canada, while abortions, being clandestine, remained such remarkably crude and dangerous operations.   Here's the webaddress for anyone wanting to read more of what it was like for Women in the 50's Montreal, http://www.cbctrust.com/nochoice/begin.html   There would way too much to post from this ,.so I will leave it up to those who are interested to see if there is information from the events that Happy Di was asking about,.....they may not even be listed on this site,..... but you may want to check it out,.............  seems like Hospitals were the least of some of these peoples worry's

I am an outdoors person, and my french is pretty good , I was hunting for years in a region of Quebec where I met some great old french people, one  man in particular , who could not read or write, used to help me polish off a bottle of rum and tell me stories of the old days, he used to cut wood for the paper company , and he would leave home and head into the woods for a month , on board the paper companys train , not in a coach but in an open box car , where he was charged 5 cents for a box of matches and whatever more for cigarettes, when he came down he used to have to ride with the lumber on the box cars , then Duplessis came to power , and told the eddy match company , free matches for the men , cigs to cost 5 cents a pack and he also gave them all a pig and some chickens to produce food for their familys, so he was elected easily in the outer limits from MOntreal , these were true stories told to me be this man, he used to play the violin and could not read nor write, he would stomp his foot and away he would go , oh I could tell you stories forever about the wilds of Quebec , beautiful people , believe you me .  Jimmy

Hi: The story I was talking about was Duplessis' Orphans. Another proud moment in our history. I got another story confussed with this one, but it shows you how the powers that be used so called mental illness to achieve their ends. In this case to hide illegitimate children who were an embarrassment to the Catholic Church and Duplessis Government. The Children were taken away from their mothers and put into orphanages which later became mental institutions . The children were told their mothers were dead and the mothers were told their children were dead. The children were badly treated and abused.....The article is interesting and as I said a couple of years ago there was a documentary on CBC....Dianne

Isn't it amazing that one pair of sneakers in those days were good enough for everything we did? No such thing as cross trainers, joggers etc. My daughter's kids both love to play outside, of course they are only 6 and 8. Times have changed. Di

I remember as kids we knew every new board game that came out, and often asked 'Santa' for one for Christmas.  Has anybody gone to the Thrift Stores lately and seen all the board games stockpiled, often selling for 25 cents.  Some are well used, but others are still like new, sometimes unopened.  Right there that seems to make a statement, doesn't it?   So, I wonder how games like Monopoly, etc. are still ranked as the #1 game played.  Probably all the board games have a software version.  But I have to think it's very lonely playing a game on the p.c., who do you yell at, and who do you keep your eye on in case they're cheating, lol.  Do you think kids today are sadly lacking with their interpersonal skills?  I wonder.   Cheers.

Hi Linda:
Yeah I do think the kids today are missing out on a lot of outdoors fun, the fun we had when we were kids, we had to be inventive, and make our own fun. Today the kids have so much at their disposal, it realy is amazing what young kids know today in comparison to our younger years. But I think a price is being paid in the sense that type 2 diabetes is prevelent amoung young children. I have noticed that young kids are a lot bigger than we were back in the 50's. I recently heard that infant and child car seat manufactures are making them larger.I could go one for an hour on the subject. Then on the other hand the kids today know so much more than we did thanks to computers etc. Although I am not sure that is such a good thing because the kids are maturing too fast and some things they don't need to know until their minds and intellect have reached the same level of maturity as their bodies. Anyhow this is a very interesting topic....Dianne

Hi Les,   Hmmmmm.  Like I said, knowledge is power.  Never believe what other people say.  That's their experience.  Go out and find the truth yourself.  People live longer now because of new treatments and diagnosis ---otherwise we'd all be dead by now.    And Dianne,   Yes, I remember recess and playing in the school yard and spending all day in the playground and playing these simple wonderful games.  Life is a bit complicated now and it's not the kids' fault.    We babyboomers created this world for our kids.  An example:  Alberta, the richest province in the country, cut school budgets, eliminated teachers and removed programs like art and music and gym, so no wonder our kids can barely run and have Type 2 diabetes. (Everybody things those are fluffy things we can do without.)  So parents put their kids into organized programs like Little Leaque and hockey clubs and gymnastics because the schools aren't doing anything.  I have to laugh.  We are the cause of why kids do not know how to be inventive or creative ---we baby boomers with our sixties ideals and values.  Whatever complaints we have about the kids nowadays, it is of our own making.    If kids don't get the guidance they need in the home, where will they get it?  In the streets?  And we know what's lurking there.  They say it takes a village to raise a child.  You bet!     On a lighter note,  Where in Montreal can one find the best bagel?  St. Lawrence or Faiimont?  Inquiring minds need to know for chapter 5.    Have fun and enjoy remembering Verdun.  Ha ha ha!

Hi Chris:

I can only speak from my own experience. I don't think I was reared any differently from others of my generation. My parents had very little money so we , the kids made our own fun. My dad would take us fishing and we would spend one week at my grandparents on Lake of Two Mountaines. As a teen ager my house was the neighbourhood gathering place for all the kids, and my parents would let us play music and dance and every August we'd have a corn boil. But my parents didn't have the money to put us into ballet and other activities. But we had a library card and I was a day camper at the Y on Gordon for 2 summers. Now, when my sister came along I was 20 years old and she was reared differently from me and my 2 brothers. That is another story!!

When my husband and I we moved to rural Nova Scotia in 1970 and began our family we went fishing, hiking, camping and I let the girls catch frogs and polywogs. They were always dirty, or so it seemed but they had a ball. I didn't buy them the latest toys but they always had art supplies and we are all avid readers. Now my oldest has 2 kids and they have every electronic gadget going and know their way around a computer way better than me! But you know what? When they come here for sleepovers, we let them play out side in the mud and we do things with them. We take them to museums and do arts and crafts. We even TALK with them. It's amazing what goes on in their little minds and what they think about stuff.

So, I guess what I am trying to say is, as parents it is our responsibility to do our best for our kids, but I think the best we can do is to be there for them and to listen to them and to encourage them to make the right decisions so that they can lead healthy, productive lives as adults.

So on that note I am off to bed as it is 1:54 AM here in N.S.

Good night and I'll read what you have to say tomorrow.....Dianne

Wohoa!  Interesting discussion, but still need to find out where to get the best bagel in Montreal!   Let me say that my observations were of a general nature based on my observations, research and experiences, and I respect other's opinions.    There are always exceptions..  Let's not paint all kids with the same brush!  Let's enjoy their individualism, let's listen to them and try to remember what it was like to have raging hormones.  Next time you see a kid on the street or on the bus, try to empathize with him, really think:  what would I be doing today if  I were that kid.      Sandy and Dianne summoned it all up quite nicely.  I still believe each generation is responsible for how we leave the world for the next generation.  Pollution is a concern today.  And yes popdog, an education does help.  That's why I say Knowledge is power.  And education doesn't have to mean university, etc.  Not everyone can afford it or want it, but make your library your friend and read read read.  Can you tell I'm an author?           And, Chris, it's never about money.  It's about communicating, listening and being there and connecting with another human being.  After all we are all the same; none is better than the other ----we all bleed, go to the bathroom and then we die!  So no one is more special than another.  Not every child has your strength Chris and don't need the "village" to help them.  I can tell you too that if it weren't for the people I met in the "village" guiding me--- teachers, families, and decent friends--- God knows where I'd be today.!   So what about my bagel?

I might be heading to the Toronto area in the next little while, and this makes me think of Bob and other members in that area. Sure, there are bumps to handle on this site, but isn't that just like life. With my Dad's sickness & death earlier this year, and my wife being out of town most of the time, this fantastic group of people have been a very positive part of my life's daily routine. My thanks to all who post messages, pictures, jokes, articles, links, and those members also who comment on my contributions.     M.P.U.

As far as the other discussion.....I love a good debate, I like to hear other peoples opinions and arguements, as long as we can keep it free from caustic remarks, and what seems like personal attacks. I don't care if no one on this board agrees with one iota of what I have said, and tells me so, but I'd appreciate it very much if we could refrain from being sarcastic in our rebutals. Some people seem to enjoy going in for the kill....why is that? The discussion was comparing back then with today.....hardly a life altering topic....Dianne

Popdog,   You are making me hungry!  I want a sesame bagel with cream cheese and lox to go please!  Now, is the St. Viateur place you mention  the same one that is written about in one of Mordecai Richler's books?  I forget the name, but I remember seeing them bake the bagels in the oven and I remember sitting at the counter and ordering a fried salami sandwich on rye with a coke and boy was it good.  Maybe I was just hungry that day!  Here in Edmonton, the bagels are doughy donut things without much character or colour.   I just saw those market photos.  I missed the original postings as I wasn't a member then..  I loved going to Atwater Market--- the scents, colour and texture of the produce!  The last time I was there was in 1990 I believe and my 5 year old at that time got an introduction into fishing.  There was a pool of fish and kids were given a fishing rod to see if they could catch anything.  It was a fun thing.    Love the photos...whoever took them....I didn't catch the name.  Thanks.   Dolly

Great pics Joey-Verdun.    I recall getting these big, fat, green pencils when we were learning to print/write in school.  We had to hand them in to the teacher at the end of the day!  Also, I remember learning to write with a pen and nib (not sure what the name of these pens was) where you had to keep dipping them in the inkwell bottle in the little hole in the desk.  I remember my mom getting inkblotters for me from the drycleaners (of course their advertising was on them).  Writing with ballpoint pens was a real no-no.    Do the kids today still write (penmanship) or is everything done on computers, even in the classrooms?   Cheers.

I think penmanship is a thing of the past. I too remember those pens, ink bottles and blotters and the mess they made. Have you checked the price of fountain pens lately? I noticed them when I was at Staples last week, very expensive, but like everything else these days. ....Di
