Hi everybody, How many of you people that left Verdun remember those hot humid nights that there was not even enough of a breeze to blow out a match, well that how hot this whole summer has been so far. When I was a kid we would build a tent on our galleries and pray that it would rain during the night.I guess a lot of you did the same thing. You could joke with your buddies across the lane or street all night or until your parents would yell to shut up.Any other ways to beat those hot nights that you remember. Hi Dannyb how the hell are you? Haven't seen too many familiar names for awhile until just recently.........I remember all too well the humidity, a couple of years ago I took my son back east to show him places where I grew up,and ended up at my sisters home in london(ont)where I went out golfing on a particularly hot humid day and by the 2nd hole My shirt was soaked and we had a cart..........while I still lived in Verdun/Lasalle I got smart and bought an Air conditioner..I honestly don't know how we did it.........but Montreal 's not the only place that's had and still having a hot summer half this province is on fire and we really need some sustained rain.................it's funny to here the word "gallery" as no one uses that term here......it's a dead giveaway when I do hear it as to where someone is from.......have fun dannyb , good to see you back on here.now where the hell is fatboy/bear??????? must ne lots of construction going on and he's making hay while the sun shines
Hi Les, I guess that bear is working too hard in this heat, his type of work is back breaking as it is. I moved on July 1st and still have boxes that I have not even unpacked yet.It is just too hot for me to work on anything.I'm glad that I don't work anymore because I would be in the hospital right now. I just can't do the things that I did before. Dannyb--
Hey, weren't those hot summer nights with everyone out on their balconies,
right up to the third floor is what gave Verdun the name - BALCONVILLE....?
Or is that just a Montreal term? Or a staying at home for vacation term?

Hi Bettyloo, the term balconyville I believe was used to express the fact that people couldn't always afford to go anywhere else on vacation. It seems to me that it was widely used from Griffin Town ...the Point...Goose village......and then on to Verdun.............another term was Asphalt beach..............it was always used in good humour.......Glad to see you responding on here again as well.....I guess we all had a sort of summer time out.............hope you all had and are having a great summer..........have fun everyone
Hey DannyB ... what about all those nights with the case of 24 ... that was one way of staying cool ... Oh remember that night you opened your bottle of beer and the cap started singing ... and I grabbed it and started running ... Well al I got out of that was a lousy PHONE CARD .... you can have it if ya like .... still have it ...
HEY- LES, DANNYB YOU GOT THAT RITE THE HEAT FOR SURE, THEN YOU WONDER IF IT IS GOING TO RAIN WHEN YOU POUR CONCRETE, WAS VERY CLOSE AT TIMES I'LL TELL YOU. LES IS RITE NOW IS THE SEASON TO MAKE A DOLLAR, TO KEEP US GOING TILL NEXT SEASON. LOTS OF WORK THEN THE POWER WENT OUT FRIDAY, NOW ALL JOBS BEHIND SCHEDULE?? I TOOK MY SON TO WORK, HE QUIT JUST AFTER A WEEK, HARD WORK?? HEY I WAS DOING THIS FOR 28 YEARS +
HEY- KEATER BEER CAPS WERE NOT WASTED IN WW11, THEY SAVED LIVES BACK THEN?? THEY USED THEM AS HELMETS FOR THE CHICKENS, LIKE THAT ONE, BACK THEN IT WAS NORMAL TO HAVE A CASE OF BEER ON THE BOARDWALK, THE OLD VERDUNERS WOULD SIT WITH US AND TELL US THESE STORIES.
hey bear good to hear from you.I figured you were busy ...the whole country seems to be in a building boom....makes me wonder when the bottom falls out......make it while you can...........have to laugh about your son lasting a week.I thought it was just my son who didn't have the work ethic.....man we couldn't wait to get out of our houses and go to work......sounds like our kids have had a pretty easy time of it,so far, I'm still waiting for reality to hit my kid....oh well I guess we'll have to wait and see, after all we partied pretty good....then we got our breaks.....as long as their heads work they will make out OK give them time........and they might surprise us................
Hey Keater, Just to let you know I still have that bottle of beer and the musical beer cap along with the water that was in it. Want to buy it. All I want is a case of 24 for it. Great for Molson collectors. Dannyb--
Hi Bear, I though maybe you were working 24/7 lately, with all the construction going on. I guess that is how you make the big bucks these days in construction in order to survive the long cold winter.Good to see you found a few free minutes to check out Verdun connections it has been very quite lately. I still haven't finished unpacking yet just can't get into it in this heat lately. Catch you later. Dannyb--
Hey Danny, Ya I can remember the hot humid August evenings on Second
Avenue. My family used to sit out on the gallery drinking cold ginger
ale to cool off. Sleeping meant not using a blanket or a sheet. If you
moved in bed, you'd sweat. Certainly air conditioning was unheard of,
or even a fan. I suppose, as a kid, if you didn't know the difference,
it didn't really matter too much.
There was a small mom and pop store across the street from our flat,
converted from one of the downstairs flats. They sold many items such
as white bread, brown bread and milk, but what I was interested in
were fudgecicles, creamcicles, Grapette, Ski soft drinks, and Kik
Cola (my personal favorite), used comic books: Superman, Batman,
Wonder woman, Archie and Jughead, Black and white Horror comics, as
well as crime stories. I would have to take orders with my coaster at
Steinberg's on Verdun Avenue and Sixth (?), to earn a dollar or so for
spending money.
Take care,
Bill Cooper

Hey Secondave, what about space bars did they have them then, They had orange sherbert coated with chocolate.Or the plain old fashion popsical, or nuttybuddy. Tell me do you have any relatives named Peter & Stewart, when I was a kid there was two brothers that would come visit on my street (3rd ave) often and we would play together, I thought that they lived on 2nd ave. but higher up near the river. I lived at 626 near Verdun ave. Dannyb--
Hey Danny. I lived at 835 3rd ave. You lived near a guy by the last name of White. Don't recall his first name. Kik was the great drink, especially at the cost. I think it was 9 cents. Also Polo Rico, I think cost 3 cents. Ah the good old days.Winston Allison

Last name was Sullivan. He had 2 sons, Larry the
oldest now lives in Chateauguay and Brian living in B.C.
Brother Eddy eventually moved to St. Hubert (
Southshore) where he became Director of Fire & Police.
Tony
Winnie;
I sc....d up with my original response. Brpther
Eddy's address was 813 - 3rd Ave. Still close to yours I think. Not sure what
year he left 3rd Ave. for St. Hubert but I will try and find out. Vrother died
June 10th so it is a little difficult asking questions to sister-in-law &
kids at this time but not impossible as things settle down.
Will pass on info as I verify same. No more dum
addresses, etc.
Regards
Tony
Thanks Tony. Appreciate that. Winston

Oh man.,...I used to take orders with my wagon too! hehe I went to the Steinberg's at the corner of Willibrord and Wellington tho. Around Xmas time you could rake in a LOT of money, man! You really had to work for it tho, cuz the orders were bigger and heavier to carry and most times you'd get someone who lived on a third floor flat hehe. Darn those stores for starting delivery! Our kids woulda been able to make their OWN spending money! LOL Course, they still can by different methods, but that was one easy way. I had to always do it with my brother tho, cuz my Mom was afraid that some "bad man" would go after me. So everything we made was split... Geeeeeeeez...you'd be dead BEAT when you got home after doing that all evening! Luv, Sharon
I lived at 397 3rd ave for a few years ... and Winnie I'm still drinking KIK ...
Thanks. It has been a number of years since I went back to Montreal, but someone told me they were not making Kik anymore. Those dirty rotters, I wanted to get some the last time we were there, just to see if it still tasted as good. Oh well, maybe next time.

Hot Summer Nights, I Remember when every summer it seemed was hot ,humid, & sticky,..those were nights when a Real Thunder Storm would be appreciated, accompanied by those fantastic bolts of Fork Lightning, lighting up the summer sky,......and then the downpour cooling off the city, form what I hear this summer is the opposite, being rainy & cool,.......but then that's what makes the really hot summer nights easy to remember,...Thanks to DannyB, who started this thread, back on August 17th,2003
Have Fun and Remember Verdun
