Bahama865 Must be we are from the same era. My family moved to 669 Riverview after my Dad got out of the Air Force and was a City of Westmount Firefighter. I was 4 at the time(1945) and I too remember the ice man going up the lane with his horse drawn wagon. My Mom would put a sign in the kitchen window when she needed ice. He would bring it up the back stairs and put it in the ice box. And of course the pan had to be dumped every day as the ice thawed.. Afew years later we got a real refrigerator witha little freezer up in the left hand corner of the fridge that was only big enough for two ice cube trays. We never had Ice cubes because Mom would go to leonards Meat market on Verdun Ave each Sat and stock up on meat and put it in this little freezer. Three pounds for $1.00 for hot dogs, hamburg and sausage was their biggest bargain at the time as I remember.Mom was and still is a very thrify person and she passed those traits on to me. I love to cook and be creative using leftovers so they don't appear to be leftovers. Ruth
I Remember our first brand new 'Frigidaire' ..............and it was still in my oldmans house until the late 80's (and it's probably still someones Beer Fridge today)...........hahaha ......I believe he bought it brand new in the late 50's, as well as our brand new TV,.....When he came back from a stint in Frobisher Bay NWT,........these jaunts to the North were Quick Big Money Injections,.....similar to our kids heading out to the oil fields ,nowadays,.........and I see the kids get back nowadays with a big pile of dough,......and they buy themselves a big screen TV,...and all the toys of nowadays,.....I guess the more things change ,.the more they stay the same...............hahahahah and so the cycle goes.......................................

Well the only thing the Habs new goaltender is Saving for Montreal is the difference in salary btwn,..him and Theodore.............10 goals in two games,....not exactly stellar performance......and the Habs defence should be appearing on an 'Amber Alert' shortly as they have gone missing..............Hope things change for the Habs ,......they are extremely 'Mediocre' on another note ,..I didn't hear mention of Catto ? unless I missed it,.....they did mention Red Storey,....after the habs game,....but I was switching btwn the Habs Game (which was on our french CBC, ) and the NewYork -toronto game on the English CBC,.....so I may have missed any mention of it,.... ________________________________________________________HF&RV
HI Les. I was at the game with my gandson, and yup , I agree completely , except for Souray , who must have played 40 minutes the rest were out to lunch, we outshot Pittsburg 47 to 23 and lost 5 to 4 , I think 4 of the goals were stoppable, grandson wanted a bottle of water, 4 bucks, hot dog 3.50 Beer8.75 , geez how can anyone go to the games without company money , unbelieveable the prices , I dont mind paying , but that is almost highway robbery . night Jimmy
Hi bubbacut,...I would think that given the business smarts of both Lacroix & Gainey,.they both must have thought a change would re-juvenate these players,.the good thing is that Montreal gets immediate relief from the Salary Cap,......and Colorado, hopes to get a Theodore that regains some of his ability,.......a Gamble either way,.....but still doesn't help the Habs,.when your in a race for a playoff spot,.there are several teams that can overtake the Habs for the final spot,......one being the Thrashers who are one point back (Habs a game in hand) ,.......I would imagine that Gainey will be address'sing the poor response by the Canadiens 'D' ,....and there transition game also seems to have pulled a 'Houdin' as well. Let's hope thet re-apear shortly........the team is rather embaraswsing right now,. ........and I seriously hope the leafs don't pass the Habs for that final spot either,... Oh well time will tell,.....but I can see the 'Driving Range's' near Montreal getting ready for business from the Blu Blanc Rouge.................. _________________________________________________HF&RV
The Gazette seems to be running a little behind,...in todays's copy they have printed the 'Obit' for Red Storey,......(he died early in the week didn't he ?) & so far no mention for Chuck Catto........usually they are quicker than that,...... language=javascript src="/Script/js/flashobject.js"> language=JavaScript> Red Storey STOREY, Red. Well the Parade is underway in Downtown Montreal,.and they have Peel & StCatherine closed off,.....but I can't see any floats or people in the webcam at that corner,.. http://www.montrealcam.com/en-visitation.html click skip the intro,.to view the street,.......it is also -10c (with the windchill),...I guess those 'mickey's will be getting a workout,......... _______________________________________________________HF&RV
Well this explains it the street is closed form Peel & StCatherine,....but the 'route' is from Fort St to Jeanne Mance, The Route Organized by the United Irish Societies of Montreal and led by the Grand Marshall, the parade runs along Ste Catherine Street from du Fort to Jeanne Mance where the reviewing stand is placed. With dozens of floats carrying flag-waving patriots and Irish dancers among other things, Montreal's St Patrick's Day Parade is a guaranteed afternoon o'fun for the whole family!
Tips to having a great time at the parade: 1. Have a huge breakfast or brunch. 2. Dress warm, you never know how the weather will be. 3. Take drinks and snacks with you, it's cheaper. 4. Get downtown early, walk or take public transit. 5. Bring a chair or cushion if you don't want to stand through the whole parade. 6. Establish your place and wait for the fun to begin! --------------------------------------------------------
So in Woodland California ,....their Pizza looks similar to the one MPU posted ? is there an affilitaion ,.to the two ? ............or simply filler ? hahahahaha
I think someone was talking about the Movie Theaters in Montreal,....and and until the 60's kidds were simply not allowed to go to a theater ( at least not on there own),....because of a Fire in a Theater way back that caused the Quebec Gov't of the day to restrict access to kids ,....unless (I beleive) accompanied by a parent or guardian of sorts,..........the Reason for those laws ,stemmed right from this incident here as posted in the Montreal Gazette,on January 10th,1927,,,,,,,, Seventy-Six Children were Killed, mostly trampled by a Panic response from the moviegoers,.....and as it turns out te fire was not that threatning,....... A real tragedy that changed the laws for quite a while,..........Some old Montreal History,.........but they sure had some nice old Movie Theaters didn't they ,.....the Capitol ,.the Loews ,....etc etc ...........The Imperial...............all very majestic sounding names and elaborate decor ( that as kids we thought looked just 'old').........hahahaha but compared to the dinky little rooms that they jam everyone in for $10. dollars plus per crack (no pun intended)...............hahahaha
If the government did not allow corporations to write off expenses for Sports events and they ruled out gambling on games , the prices of all events would drop way way down and the sports would revert back to the people, to me our way of life is nuts, who is worth 7 million to play 80 hockey games a year , while no milk or food for so many , if I had to pay for the tickets, I would never go to the game, 140.00 dollars a ticket , times two and 100.00 in spending money , just makes no sense to me. You know, it is mandatory to buy playoff tickets now, even if the team does not get into the playoffs , they keep your money for about two months and reap the interest , you have to buy all the tickets in advance as if they win the Stanley cup , what a rip off, and the Arena's are sold out , go figure . Jimmy
Unfortunately Jimmy (kungfu) We all still support them indirectly,...by allowing it to continue, just by watching the games,....You mention the $7mil/yr figure,..for 80 games. It's worse than that really ,.considering almost no players will play in all 80 games,..and (with the exception of the goaltender) most players won't play 20 minutes in a game,....so the equivalent pay is like $21mil/yr (seeing they only play a third and get the $7mil...............it's crazy,.......and we are watching a very poor performance almost without exception throughout the league.... Mediocrity seems to be the 'Benchmark' for performance .........and they think they've got a 'New' NHL..........it stinks. These are supposedly better athletes than in the past,...Bigger Faster Better (2 out of 3 I'll agree) but they certainly are not better,.......I wonder if anything will ever return to normal......We do have some really good junior teams,Perhaps we should turn our support towards them,....until a better quality product is put out on the professional ice. Remember back in the late 60's when the Montreal Jr Canadiens were out drawing the 'Big' team,....and playing a more exciting brand of hockey,.....(of course most of them went on to play for the big team later) ...which was the nucleus of the dynasty of the 70's........They played so much better than the Parent Habs (at that time) ,that Montreal moved the Jr Team away from the Forum & the City for that matter,..cause they didn't like the competition........even changed their name to the Voyageurs......but it served as a wake up call to bring the younger players up ,....Look at our Team Canada this year ,all players who got the spot just because they've been around a while (too long perhaps)........and we didn't bring Young players like Crosbie ,....what are we thinking these days .////////// Don't Support the League in anyway, and see if they change it,....The NHL pretty much can guarantee it's Canadian Viewership,......(maybe we should change that ),they brought in rules to appease the U.S. teams that couldn't care less anyway ,.despite the general Canadian consensus to 'leave the game alone' .........all they had to do was 'Seriously Enforce the Existing Rules' and we would see games like tey used to be played,.... ............and here's a thought ,........when a Player Earns his pay ,....then Pay him well. but when he plays mediocre then pay him the same way,.......and let's see some of the 'Player Agents' take a hit in their pay too, when their player goes downhill. but we all know what will happen. "Apathy" the great Canadian game. BTW ..............what times the game on tonight..................hahahahahaha _______________________________________________HF&RV
I remember that scandal. The crooked employes pocketed the quarters. It was discovered that some had fancy cars, chalets and even private planes. When the Government officials finally woke up, officials received all kinds of threats. I will keep an eye out for that event when doing research at the SHGV. Guy
Right On Bubbacut,.....Here in the West ,where we are subjest to a Team whose battle cry for 30+ years is "Just Wait till Next Year"..........every year without exception this is the cry,...... They have experimented with 'Pay per View' for a few years now,.....and they have added more & more games every year,....so someone is paying for this crap,....more likely somebody's parents are paying for their kids to see this garbage. Perhaps Vancouver is a test market for the league,.I guess the thought is that if they can pedal this crap, anyway regardless of performance ,.then they can do it in toronto,..and the other cities will follow too. Last night was a pay per view ,.and the Canaucks are fighting for a playoff spot,.....so they had to play the Redwings who just came off a game (in which they went to OT) the night before,..so the Wings were good & tired when their plane landed in Vancouver at 1:30 am the mornignof last nights game,......it's a good thing they were tired and Vancouver needed the pioints,..cause the Wings only beat them 7 -3 (or something like that) ......hahahaha but can you imagine paying for this junk.....(I'm with you on the remote control practice, even when these games are free) So you can bet it is coming ,but I think that when the younger generation (if they ever leave home,.......yaa I know stop cooking with cheese),.....but as soon as the parents Stop paying for the nonsense ,..a reality check will come into play,....... When you listen to all the hype like the Canucks pump out (they think they are an elite team),.......they are much like toronto in that respect,....they think if they tell us they are elite teams in the NHL that we'll believe them..........hahahahaha if it wasn't for toronto's vast highly populated TV audience area,....they would be the stumble bums they really are,but with no money........unfortunately that audience makes them one of the wealthiest in terms of income,........and GREED is the only driving force if they plan to go to pay per view as well............maybe it's a last 'kick at the can' and the collapse of the league will happen,...........it almost did during the strike...........I just hope Hockey in the form it was meant to be ,returns for us at some point......................... Support your Younger Players,......& Teams and stop buying NHL products of any sort.................................
I Remember the tollbooth scam,...some of the guys had large houses on te South Shore,.and big cars,.one guy had a small plane etc etc,. So far the only refereance to it I can find is this : *******The last major scandal like that was the one involving the tollbooth operators on the Victoria, Champlain, and Jacques Cartier bridges. In fact, that was one of reasons bridge toll collecting was eliminated; the only survivor being the Champlain until it too was abolished on May 4, 1990. (Be glad we don't live in NYC! Hi Les, Thanks for the transit link. I will check it out tonight. I remember the bridge toll booth scandal. If I recall correctly some people were living pretty good off that scam. I went on a hunt today, and this is the response I received which I thought might be of interest to you and your brother.
Based on a conversation I had with Parmalat about 3 years ago, it's in the company's storage. The company promised to put it back once they figured out a space to put it in, but so far they still haven't done so and probably never will. By the way, that street is now called St. Jacques West, (or St. James Street West, as it's often called). Upper Lachine Road now begins at Decarie and ends about 8 blocks west of there.

How's this for consistency in suspensions in the NHL: this article appeared in the Montreal Gazette on the 11th of March,.......and when you compare a Franchise type player,or certainly a top calibre player like Erik Cole ,having a Broken Neck,..and the Bum who did it ,get;s 3 games ............??? Bertuzzi (albeit obvious intent) injurys a marginal player and gets over a year (aside from civil suit ) ,.....and all the other non calls ,.............What is going on ? Consistency is extremely 'vague' to say the least ......in today's New & Improved (ya right) NHL
Hi Les ! It’s a very good collection of old photos of Montreal (In fact, my pic came from that link). Thanks for posting it. (... what about the name of the church ? ...). Lovell may be of some help ! BTW, I am searching for the link to this pic of a 58-Wellington streetcar which I posted many months ago. Do you have it ? JM
Thanks for the link for the Montreal pictures, they were beautiful. Too bad so many older [ heritage] buildings were torn down for wider roads etc. Can you imagine the traffic congestion on those narrow roads today? In fact some of those downtown streets are pretty bad today.
In Halifax the big controversy today is the development of a downtown vacant lot near Historic Properties. City Counsel passed a bill or whatever its called for the building of two office towers and you may or may not know that there are height restrictions on any new construction in that area. This is to enable harbour views from Citadel Hill. The two buildings are being dubbed the Twisted Sisters due to their weird shape. These buildings in my opinion will not fit in with the 18 and 19 century landscape....well that's progress for you.....Dianne
And speaking of heritage buildings and urban development...would anyone know if there are any pictures of the St. Laurent area re Rockland Shopping Centre, before that area was built up like it is today? The reason I am asking is I have been researching my family tree and my ancestors were married in St Laurent in 1723, lived there for several years then moved to Ste Genevieve de Pierrefonds. My great grandfather moved to Montreal around 1900. I know there aren't any pictures dating back to 1723....lol....that's for all the comedians out there on the board...lol....Dianne
Hi JMH are you referring to the site for the #58 which you have posted ? or another picture ofthe #58,........in any case I most likely have that link bookmarked ,and when I locat it I will post here for you,........ ......but I seem to recall that quite a number of streetcar pics were from the STCUM site ,..but you'll have to cruise around it,to find that photo,......but also there are several good pictures of old bus's or streetcars available on the Point St Charles site,at least I seem to Remember them having some,....you can get to the Point site through 'Links' on the lefthand side of this VC site front page,.......also as Wesley Dryden is a manager or co- creator of the Point Site,...He would have access to many a streetcar link I would bet,......because he & his Dad are retired from the MTC ( STCUM) .........so checking there may help you also,.............. *****************************Have Fun & Remember Verdun********
Thanks Les, I will [pass this description on to my cousins who are checking through their parent's old photographs. They llived on Jean-Mance when their dad (Uncle Ernie Elliott) delivered for Elmhurst Dairy.
I have been hearing some rumblings about another possible VHS Reunion planned for later this year, and am wondering if anyone here might have any knowledge/information about it happening. Thanks. Glen
There probably would be a few interested, if you hear any more keep us posted. The best time would be Spring, Summer or early Fall. Would catch the snow birds when they came home, and before they left.

Hi JMH thanks for letting me know you found the site,..I thought I had Remembered it being there,...I have been going through a lot of the old links ,.and some have been updated (re: bus's ttrams streetcars,etc.etc.) It 's amazing how easy it is to forget some of the old sites,....and the pictures available on them ,.There are alot more links available now, than when we started out a few years back,..many are now simply duplicate (mirror sites) that have the same pics,.but it's still interesting to see. Not only do you get to see the old trams,..but the buildings in the background ,sure bring back quick thoughts of growing up in Montreal,.and seeing all these things first hand,....it's funny the B&W photo's of Montreal always remind me of winter for some reason,..and just how cold it was,.must be that grey look to them,..but I did get to see a lot of the city ,.and travelled throughout the Harbour as my oldmans company, did alot of work on and around ships ,.in and around Old Montreal.as well as many of the large ship repair business's such as Canadian Vickers, J&R Weir Ltd,(which is now converted to a state of the art ,graphics & movie makind bldg)........blah blah blah............. ************************Have Fun & Remember Verdun Those old streetcar shots like the one you posted

Hi Les ! Some friends recently went to Vancouver where they tried the trolleybus. They were very impressed by the comfort, quietness of these ecologically friendly vehicles. Vancouver's busiest transit routes have been served by zero-emission electric trolleybuses since 1948. http://vancouver.trolleybus.net/ JM
Yes your right JMH,...when I first arrived here in the 70's,I thought these trolley's were rather archaic, and you would still see the driver have to get out of his bus,& returmn the arm to the overhead wires,....it all seemed so ridiculous, but as we know now they were smart ot have retained the service,......They say everything comes around again,.......but I always understood that Montreal enjoyed one of (if not ,) the 'largest' number of mass transit (public transit ) users/riders in North America,.....so it will be interesting to see if Montreal's recent rumblings of returning a streetcar system is just Political Ramblings or if it will actually come to pass. I have seen some programs that suggested that GM (GeneralMotors),....had a big hand in having the streetcar systems of most major cities in North America,be scrapped in favour of 'whatelse' Buses...........seems they wanted to promote there Bus manufacturing plants,......and get rid of their main competition the Streetcar/Trolley's..............I guess Political Influence was the name of the game,(Payola),..................but that couldn't have happened inQuebec (with our almost Saint like Politicians,.......they wouldn't have been on the Take would they).............hahahahahah .........................................................................................Thanks for the link :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::Have Fun & Remember Verdun::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Here are two more almost 'wide angle ' shots of the interior seating area,of the old Imperial Theatre: Notice the mention of 'Chocolate covered Ice Cream BArs for .10 cents,'.........I also Remember always getting soem of those Lowney's 'Glossette' chocolate covered raisins,..........I think the movies was the only place I Remember having these treats.Remember the cardboard box they came in with that 'celophane' window in the front of the box,so you could see those multi size glossette's...............and then of course being with a group of friends,..we would take the 'empty box and blow through it ,to make a very enjoyable high pitched screeching sound for all the other movie goers,.....who I 'm sure appreciated us little Bas&%^*ds doing that...............hahahahah Usually the theatre was full of kids so throwing chip bags,.and making noise ,only helped create a demand for having ushers ,...otherwise these poor young people would have had nothing to do..........Oh yea running down the aisles was mandatory too ...........as well as 'sneaking friends in the rear exits (at the Savoy at least) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~HF&RV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yes JMH I Remember it very well,......and right beside me was the home of the Gueardian Newspaper,......later 'the Messanger',...and I believe long before Macaksey had a sport Trophy Shop near Egan ?? on Verdun N. side,.......he once inhabited the very store beside me as well......................
Now this is weird,..i have the Habs game on TSN on the TV in living room,.as I'm getting dinner ready,.......and when I come in the computer room I have the internet radio on CJAD and oddly enough CJAD is running a minute behind the TSN broadcast,.......Btw it's 3-0 Habs right now........................... HF&RV
Is it ever annoying les, I listen to french t v , because It bothers me to listen to C J A D 2 seconds behind , its done on purpose of course , however I like the score jimmy
Hi Jimmy (kungfu) I too usually watch the weekend Hab games on CBUFT our French channel here in Victoria,....generally because I get to see all the action,.I find CBC English breaks away for commercials all the time,....especially if there's a fight ,..the French channel will stay and show the action,..............but tonight's TV game happens to be the Habs (only because they are playing the leafs) you know why of course it's TSN Toronto Sports Network hahahahahaha HF&RV
Again Jimmy (kungfu) I AGREE Harry Neale is an Idiot,.........I don't know what game he watches ,but it sure doesn't relate to the one on the Tube..........hahahahah Habs just scored again 4-0.....................I like that HF&RV
Well it's nice to get a win ,considering some of the 'easy games' they gave up in te last week or two,....but Atlanta & NJ,.went to OT ,so Atlanta gets 2 pts,...and NJ gets 1,.....still leaves the Habs on the outside looking in........I hope they can at least do their part and win from here on in,.....and hope for loss's by NJ but especially Atlanta,.............the bright side the Habs hold one game in hand over the Thrashers,..so i hope they don't waste it. Have Fun and Remember Verdun.................
JMH check the name out about 3 or 4 down from the top of that Lovell sDirectory you posted in RV#8078,........I wonder if you would know this family ? or if they are related to anyone you happen to know ? ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::HF&RV
..and a couple of Modern Day shots of the Imperial,...... Inside is a knockout,..but again the modern day street shot (Bleury) looks somewhat bleak....................................... Now this next shot has nothing to do with a Theater,........but I thought I'd post it anyway .......as we talked about this place a while back (we mentioned it ,.while discussing the one in Verdun: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$Havefun&RememberVerdun
Ok yesterday the Imperial Theatre was featured ,...but since we've been talking about StDenis Street in Montreal,.........I thought I would post pictures of the StDenis Movie Theatre Built in the early 1900's ,this place is on the West Side of StDenis btwn Emery and de Maisonneuve.opened on March 4th,1916it cost over $1million dollars to build, and could seat 2500 people(5000 really friendly ones........hahahaha ) it's hard to make out ,but written (or printed) across the screen,is the word "ASBESTOS" of course this was quite something to promote the'Fire Curtain' (in light of the fire at the Laurier Palace, where the 76 children were killed) I posted that story last week. this was then, and the next is now. well 1987 anyway the ad mentions 3000 opera seats,..now that is a lot of seats, considering most small community arenas usually are in the 2-3ooo Range. it must have been quite a sight when 3000 people would Block their Ears in unison...................hahahahahaha %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%HaveFun & RememberVerdun
Here's another little blurb on the Saint Denis Theatre,.and it's capacity's ,.seems like every page has a different idea on the stats,. http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&Params=U1ARTU0003081 HaveFun& Remember Verdun-----------------------------------------------------
Les, Was this the place they named THE PEPPERMINT LOUNGE in the 60's ,when the Peppermint Twist was so popular, 1/2 of Verdun hung out there and danced the night away. Altho' this could NOT be the same place they called The Peppermint Lounge back then??curious cookie........
Hello Cookie I will have to check that information out,.......and (to state the obvious) see how the 'Cookie' crumbles ....................................................................................LMD............
Hello Cookie ,here is some info re: the Peppermint Lounge and the building it was housed in: . (In 1961 the city was abuzz when an Englishman purchased Le Monument National building (northwest corner of Dorchester), long-time home of the St-Jean-Baptiste Society. The secret new owner was a partner in the Peppermint Lounge, a nightclub housed in the building. Colin Gravenor (who later helped conceive the writer of this article) incurred the wrath of his famous Peppermint partner, Solly "The Twist" Silver, who resented his purchase. The nightclub fell victim to police shakedowns and the building was re-acquired by the Society a few years later when it went up for auction for past taxes.) _________Here is where I got that info from,..there are alot of interesting things on the page have a look through it if you like,......the title is "Life on the Main" ............scroll down to number 42: that's the article posted above,. http://www.montrealmirror.com/ARCHIVES/1999/080599/cover.html HaveFun & RememberVerdun.....................................................................
In message #8097 RV ,...Steve posted a picture of Pierre Dube,....who performed at the Peppermint Lounge,in te 1960' He's changed somewhat ,but lokk where he happens to live now,.....just about 30minutes from me up Vancouver Island from Victoria,.....his studio is called the Blackstone blah blah blah,.............and there is a pub by the samme name nearby his studio,....I have frequebted that spot a few times usually while on a Golfing trip up Island,. http://www.cvnet.net/cosmic/z_dube.htm the link will lead you to Pierre Dube's page and studio...........if someones interested Have Fun & Remember Verdun

This must have been an awesome sight,..and somewhat scary I would think for the Passengers,.as well as the People of Hartley Bay ,who came out in their own boats in the middle of te night to Help This picture was on the Front Page of Yesterday's Times Colonist newspaper here in Victoria,................the witness's said the ship all of a sudden went stern down and the Bow raised up out of the water briefly ,before sliding below the frigid waters for te last time,......popping out it's windows and ripping off wooden railings and twisting metal,.....they said it was making alot of noise while doing this,....and then everything went quiet, and it was pitck black again.......................Scary stuff........
I meant to put this picture in the previous RV post,....but forgot ,. so here is what the ferry "Queen of the North" was supposed to look like, things could have been far worse,in a month or so this ship may have had 700 passengers or so (so far two people are still missing............first indications were everyone was rescued off the boat __________________________________________________HF&RV
Habs up 4-1 ,so far inthe second period,........ the leafs seem to be in trouble,...and the look on Quinns face, shows almost no emotion,.......I wonder if this spells the end of his tenure in toronto in any case I hope the Habs can keep going,...and also I'm hoping the Thrashers come back down to earth,...they were playing really well.........I don't know what 's up intheir game tonight ,....they were behind 1-0 early in the first,..but I'm not aware of any updates yet............ Go Habs Go......................................... ......................................HF&RV
Well you sould sure see the real frustration on the leafs, and their poor play was unbelievable,.(not that I care.........hahahaha) I think I heard something that if they lose their next game ,they will all but be eliminated from the playoff picture as for the Habs I hope they keep Focused and take every game seriously,...they need to. hf&rv
Les, I posted a message yesterday saying how special these photos of the ''Moonset'' and the PVM beacon are, but my message disappeared it seems. They are both great photos. m.p.u.
Let's continue with the theme of progress.............this pile of gravel has been in an enclosed area in Laval for I am sure at least two years as part of the construction of the Metro line to Laval. When I was in Mexico last year I spoke to a worker at a market that said he had lived in Laval for a while. When I asked where, he said "NEAR THE BIG PILE OF GRAVEL'', quite a landmark. Anyway, enough negativity, the station and line seems to be progressing, and I am sure the budget for the project is on track also, as most big projects usually are well controlled......sorry, I must have been in my daydreaming mode again...........anyway this might be interesting for those members that have a two track mind............... ...........this is being built in a very commercial area, but there is some housing, a CEGEP, an entertainment area, and Autoroute 15 is just a couple of blocks away......................................mpu
Hi MPU it ooks likje the City is spending a lot of money(or developpers are at least),.....I wouldn't have thought to go by the old Belmont Parc area ,..other than to cross the bridge,....Thanks for taking the time,& the pictures,..again it's appreciated,.............it will be interesting to see the imporvment after the construction,...... ...........HF&RV
Hi bubbacut,....I was listening to the hockey analyst's talking about how the leafs tried to build their team for an expectecded 'shortened season' ( a la the lockout),.....and Apparently since they've brought in Balfour,....they've paid him close to $11.million so far for a less than stellar season and a year lockout...........hahahahaha Some speculation that Eddy (while he does have a back problem) has just decided not to play for the leafs,....... As for tucker,..........it looked good on him,.......and the way Kovalev did it was well thought out.............hahahaha I agree the leafs are pretty much out of it ,and that's why I mentioned that the next game loss eliminates them mathmatecally from this years playoffs. I hope they are eliminated even earlier next year...............hahahahaha
So far we've had the Strand ,the Laurier Palace,.....the Imperial,..& the Saint Denis Theatre's, so today Here's the : the Loew's The Loew's was the Largest theatre in Montreal,(the largest in Canada,in fact)...when it opened on November 19th,1937. Apparently according to this book I'm reading ,.it had more than 3000 seats. the Loew's entrance was on the South Side of StCatherine, just West of Mansfield. ..........................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Ok here's some Interior shots,.... the Loew's ....cont'd I'm approaching the mb limit so I will post thes pics two at a time in case they get eaten by te CyberMonster, who's appetite for pictures and messages seem to be insatiable.................hahahahahaha ????????????????????????????????????????HaveFun&Remember Verdun
That Belmont Park sign brought back a lot of memories. I remember being there one evening when Bill Hailey and the Comets were doing Rock Around the Clock on the Park bandstand. What an exciting night it was.
two more from the Loew's : ..........We sure had some larger than life, type of buildings,.that I Remember being in awe of when you first went to one of these places,..then they became 'invisible' and your only thought was to get in & get a good seat,....and you never really looked at the building itself again,............but they were incredible buildings and a tribute to the architect's & the tradesman who built them, and the guy with the Do-Re-Mi,who took a chance and spent his greenbacks to build such fantastic places.certainl a far cry from today's standards where the theatres (for the most part)are not much more than some 'boxcars saddled together with a white screen at one end of them...................................GREED kills business,......give the people something for their money ,...and they will spend it with you ,........and the proof is showing at the box office's today where attendance is dangerously low ,most pictures lose money,..and they need to get them to Video quickly to make abuck.Oh well c'est la vie..............................it's their doughHave Fun & Remember VERDUN
Yes your right Bubbacut,....... had completely forgot about Nolan,.......although I Remember when they got him thinking that it was a good move (but only as a rental) the leafs were trying to buy their way into a cup,..............but the state of his health was a big Definite Problem,...........well they gambled and they lost,...... I hope the leafs can keep their streak alive and make it to 2067.............and beyond (which is where we will all be by that time..................hahahahahah )
Yes Wayne your right Belmont Park is certainly another Montreal 'landmark' for all of us ,......some great fun was had their ...........and as one of our members mentioned a few years back,.....half the fun was the trip to the Park,.....Streetcars/Bus's whatever it was it was a journey culminating in a day of Fun, Remember the smells of all the different candy ,popcorn,...etc etc.........and some of the smells which were not so nice on a hot humid Montreal summer day when someone returned their lunch beside the exit of the Salt & Pepper shaker ride................hahahahahaha

Hi bubbacut,......Like I said ,when the trade was completed,.the only thing Aberschier is 'saving ' for the Habs is a few million bucks,.......look for him to be dumped in the off season,....(and who knows with Lacroix,he might even bring him back to Colorado),......this guy can play better than 5goals/gm avg. against............hahahaha Remember when Patrick Roy was in Colorado,Aberschier hated being in his shadow,....and when Patric retired,Abershier was almost ecstatic, and just about said that he was happy Patrick was gone so he could show he's the number one guy,...........a character flaw for sure,.I think this guy may feel like being on the Habs is a demotion,........Once the Habs guarantee a playoff spot,...look for him to play the rest of the regular season games,.so they can rest Huet,....but I sure got a little nervous watching him in nets during this must win game yesterday ,but the your right again the leafs did the Habs a favour yesterday knocking off the Devils. Gainey's stamp is on the team,.....but I would look for some major trades in the off season ( mainly to get rid of the 'Jose' sympathizer's,......and there are a few. but the Habs certainly didn't look very effective in terms of defensive play,.....I think Gainey had something dressing 7 defenceman against the leafs,.....it generated points from some long since Dormant Habs players,........ perhaps Radek Bonk, is related to the Tree family,...and the sap is only starting to flow now that it's spring.......explains why the guy is such a Sap.....................hahahahahab but if your going to start playing better, nows the time......... GoHabsGo HF&RV
Ok Here's a theatre we have all most likely been in as well: Today we will re-visit one of Montreal's well known theatres,.......this theatre was termed 'Grandest' and when you saw the marble & granite ,.and plush decor ,it's hard to argue (albeit Montreal had some very Grand Theatre's) this Movie House sat 2600,it opened on April 2,1921,................and was torn down & demolished in the fall of 1973,......in favour of an office tower (progress ?, you decide) ..............the Capitol: ..................the sign changed slightly over the years,....but you can see the different storefronts along side the Capitol,...... Dunns Steakhouse,....certainly another recognizable Montreal landmark of sorts You can also see TipTop Tailors, circa 1948,....and right above to the right of TipTop,.you can read the sign for the Billiards Hall, with 12 tables,& the word 'English' printed on the sign (which seems odd,as there was a lot of representation of both languages on StCatherine,..............However back to the 'Capitol Theater' I'll post some Interior pictures ,after lunch ,.............. .................................................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Yes bubbacut it was Markov,............but the decision to play 7 D ,.....gave the wake up call to a few other players to answer the call,..which fortunately they did,... I hadn't heard the Abershier terms himself a professional (sounds like a self esteem problem ),...maybe feels he needs a pat on the back,.......so far it looks like the only thing he needs on his back is 'sunscreen'......................hahhhahahaha
.....the 'Capitol Theatre'.......cont'd, ..............a Marble Fish Pond, must have been a lot of profit in Movies at .25cents to $1.25/movie...............hahahahaha the next two pics will be in the following post,..... hf&rv
Look at the emormity of this place ,.I don't Remember if I ever really thought about how big these places were: afterall why would you when the Adventure was the movie of course. Remember when the lights would start to go down and the curtain would slide open,...and then the Music would start,.......that was an event,....You would be mesmerized by the film for 2 hours or more ( BenHur ,....& such........hahahaha) ,.... and this next shot ,from the stage area towards the balcony's ,shows the ingenuity,of the builder by placing the 'projectionist room' between the floors of the downstairs seats and the balcony,.....Good thinking really ......... ........................ ................................................................................HF&RV...............................

Hi Sandy ,...I agree ,you never know when something will disappear,.we take a lot for granted,...even where we live today ,.You live near so much energy (NYC) and there are many things everywhere we should try to capture,to at least leave some memorable photo's ........because all of a sudden when they decide to tear something down,....it almost always is too late too either stop it,..or let Alone Appreciate it,.....so I hope were all taking pics of the places we live,...and save those memories.. Hi Sandy, Hi Les. Sandy, Les will have to tell you where it is. I do not know but it sure looks familiar. Had I had my thinking cap on I would have realized that it was Montreal by one clue. The rocks are grey. Remember Montreal's old homes are Greystones and New York's old houses are Brownstones. The bridges in Central Park look exactly like the Montreal bridge however the New York bridges are constructed with the brownstones. This bridge is built with the Montreal greystones. I can remember riding the train from New York to Montreal on the NYC, Hartford, Vermont, Montreal route. All through Connecticut you would see those brown rocks. By the way that train still runs however you have to change for a bus to Montreal in St Albans, Vermont. The train from Montreal via Plattsburg to New York is still train service all the way. Hope all is well in Westchester and British Columbia.

My sincere condolences go to the family and friends of Chuck Catto. Ralph.

Well this explains it the street is closed form Peel & StCatherine,....but the 'route' is from Fort St to Jeanne Mance, The Route
Organized by the United Irish Societies of Montreal and led by the Grand Marshall, the parade runs along Ste Catherine Street from du Fort to Jeanne Mance where the reviewing stand is placed. With dozens of floats carrying flag-waving patriots and Irish dancers among other things, Montreal's St Patrick's Day Parade is a guaranteed afternoon o'fun for the whole family!
Tips to having a great time at the parade:

Hi Robert
I went on a hunt today, and this is the response I received which I thought might be of interest to you and your brother.
Based on a conversation I had with Parmalat about 3 years ago, it's in
the company's storage. The company promised to put it back once they
figured out a space to put it in, but so far they still haven't done so
and probably never will. By the way, that street is now called St.
Jacques West, (or St. James Street West, as it's often called). Upper
Lachine Road now begins at Decarie and ends about 8 blocks west of there.
Hope this helps some
A few weeks back I posted some pictures of a movie thetre,(can't Remember which one right now),.....However look at this old picture of the 'Strand',..it certainly must have been owned by the same people who owned or at least designed the 'Savoy' in Verdun: A little of Montreal's History,.............There sure was a lot of Theatre's in Montreal ****************Have Fun & Remember Verdun**********&Montreal too!

Bertuzzi (albeit obvious intent) injurys a marginal player and gets over a year (aside from civil suit ) ,.....and all the other non calls ,.............What is going on ?
Is it hot in here? ^

Hi Les ! I am referring to the pic of the 58-Wellington streetcar (post RV No 8054): I cannot retrace the URL link. JM
Les, I found the link via Point St.Charles website as you suggested: http://www.homestead.com/indexgwm/GWMcRae.html Tram 58-Wellington: http://www.homestead.com/indexgwm/wellington58may301954ws.html Thank you ! JM
The "Imperial" Remember this Movie Theatre,.........I can Remember seeing the movie "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World",......in there,....and it was a seemingly huge Palatial type place,.....you always got the feeling that this was a big event to go to a Movie in such a Fancy Place.................. ..........this last photo is pretty much How the Imperial looked in 1913,.......and staed that way for quite a while before adding the Huge Multi Bulb Marquee , that I Remembered seeing in the very early 60's >>>>>>>>>>>>>HAVE FUN & REMEBER VERDUN<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
In the last post , I mentioned that the last photo was pretty much how the Imperial Theatre looked in 1913,....(I know the car in the photo is a lot newer ) but what I meant to do is infer that it hadn't changed musc ,...but I should have posted this comparison photo..........: Here are the Comparison Photo's Remeberring & 'going back' in time ,a lot of History in our old Hometown: <<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Various interior shots of the old Imperial: ........Imagine the 'cost' of building ornate structures like these nowadays,...........I wonder how many old Theatre's are still around ,...we've seen a lot of Grafitti loaded ,derelict old bldgs (such as the York) ,.etc etc ......I guess saving some of these old Bldg's is just not feasible ,with the value of Real Estate these days, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HF&RV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is a direct link re: the History of the Imperial Theatre,.apparently it has been fully restored & reopened just last year,.........so it seems it 's legacy carry's on... there are a number of photographs available for viewing as well. http://www.ffm-montreal.org/en_impe_hist.html ============================================== ==== HF&RV
Well it seems there may be a couple of people missing from the sinking of the Queen of the North ,BC Ferry,.............but the name of the couple missing is one Shirley Rosette,....and a Gerald Foisy,...........I wonder if if this Gearld Foisy is any relation to a family in Verdun that DannyB & I went to school with,...a Foisy family that lived on Galt btwn Verdun & Banantyne on the E side of the street, http://www.canada.com/victoriatimescolonist/news/story.html?id=b648aa2c-07f8-4c7e-b078-535e1c56209b link is to the Times_Colonist newspaper,.re: the missing couple..............
Les, in 1960 Jos Foisy lived at 815 Galt, Verdun. (btwn Verdun & Bannantyne, east side) I think it is the person you are referring to in your post RV8073. JM
Your right again JMH ,.that is where my friend lived,..I also seem to Remember that it may have been the bottom flat,(but I really can't be sure of that) There was a Jim Foisy,.Mike Foisy ,.and John Foisy who passed away a little over a year ago,..(his obit is in our 'memoriam'link),........I think they had a sister as well ,but again I can't be sure,.......another friend of ours when we went to StWillibrords school,.was Kevin Neeson,......they lived on Verdun Av,..btwn Church & Hickson on the N.side of Verdun,......the whole group of us used to go to the same school.......Everyone lived a few short blocks away from each other ,yet at the time it seemed like miles .......and we would congregate at either Willibrord Park,.....or the monument in front of city hall,.....or obviously at the school. thanks for the Lovell's Directory update ,.........I still forget to use that Directory, although I am aware of it,..........it 's just a question of making it a regular stop ,like I do for other Montreal related web sites,.......... {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{HaveFun&RememberVerdun

Hi again Les ! You will certainly remember 4349 Verdun Ave As you will see, I found John P. Neeson at 3847 Verdun Av., this is btwn Regina & Hickson. JM
This Harry Neale announcer drives me nutty, they are so Toronto , and annoying is an easy word Pi es me off is better hahahah jim
How bout DAT HUH 4 0 Canadians
Hi Les ! Yes, Albert Hachey who once lived at 3998 Verdun Ave., was my cousin. JM
Ok yesterday the Imperial Theatre was featured ,...but since we've been talking about StDenis Street in Montreal,.........I thought I would post pictures of the StDenis Movie Theatre Built in the early 1900's ,this place is on the West Side of StDenis btwn Emery and de Maisonneuve. opened on March 4th,1916it cost over $1million dollars to build, and could seat 2500 people(5000 really friendly ones........hahahaha ) it's hard to make out ,but written (or printed) across the screen,is the word "ASBESTOS" of course this was quite something to promote the'Fire Curtain' (in light of the fire at the Laurier Palace, where the 76 children were killed) I posted that story last week. this was then, and the next is now. well 1987 anyway the ad mentions 3000 opera seats,..now that is a lot of seats, considering most small community arenas usually are in the 2-3ooo Range. it must have been quite a sight when 3000 people would Block their Ears in unison...................hahahahahaha %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%HaveFun & RememberVerdun

Les, Was this the place they named THE PEPPERMINT LOUNGE in the 60's ,when the Peppermint Twist was so popular, 1/2 of Verdun hung out there and danced the night away. Altho' this could NOT be the same place they called The Peppermint Lounge back then?? curious cookie........

Hello Cookie I will have to check that information out,.......and (to state the obvious) see how the 'Cookie' crumbles ....................................................................................LMD............
Hey Les, Don't tell me your finally stumped on a question??!! crumbly-cookie ha ha

Anyway, enough negativity, the station and line seems to be progressing, and I am sure the budget for the project is on track also, as most big projects usually are well controlled......sorry, I must have been in my daydreaming mode again...........anyway this might be interesting for those members that have a two track mind............... ...........this is being built in a very commercial area, but there is some housing, a CEGEP, an entertainment area, and Autoroute 15 is just a couple of blocks away......................................mpu
mpu........Is that the Pomerleau from Carlsbad Spring Ontario, near Ottawa? If it is I drove dump truck for them in the 80s.Nice pictures mpu. Steve

That Belmont Park sign brought back a lot of memories. I remember being there one evening when Bill Hailey and the Comets were doing Rock Around the Clock on the Park bandstand. What an exciting night it was.
two more from the Loew's : ..........We sure had some larger than life, type of buildings,.that I Remember being in awe of when you first went to one of these places,..then they became 'invisible' and your only thought was to get in & get a good seat,....and you never really looked at the building itself again,............but they were incredible buildings and a tribute to the architect's & the tradesman who built them, and the guy with the Do-Re-Mi,who took a chance and spent his greenbacks to build such fantastic places. certainl a far cry from today's standards where the theatres (for the most part)are not much more than some 'boxcars saddled together with a white screen at one end of them...................................GREED kills business,......give the people something for their money ,...and they will spend it with you ,........and the proof is showing at the box office's today where attendance is dangerously low ,most pictures lose money,..and they need to get them to Video quickly to make abuck. Oh well c'est la vie..............................it's their dough Have Fun & Remember VERDUN

Hi mags,....I didn't hear anything either, either on CJAD or through the Gazette,.....the Gazette and CJAD mentioned a fire in NDG ( where the loss of one life happened),.....but so far nothing on the Melrose deal here's a link to the Q-92 (old CKVL bldg) ,....which has Marc Denis (weekend announcer) ,......but if you tune in on the hour or maybe the half hour,...maybe they will mention it ,.seeing they are in Verdun,..and presumably are on top of local news. http://www.q92fm.com/ then click on Listen Live .................................keep us posted if you do har something ......Thanks ___________________________________HF&RV________________

Here you go mags,.this appears in the Gazette but way down at the bottom of te article that mentioned the death of an 84 year old on Walkely in NDG near Terrebonne............but here's the excerpt covering the four alarm blaxe in Verdun Last night in Verdun, a four-alarm fire started in the kitchen of a duplex and spread through the roof to neighbouring buildings. No one was injured, but about 15 people from four apartments on Melrose St. are homeless. © The Gazette (Montreal) 2006 to read the complete article click here: http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=994866c1-7979-480d-a5a2-b65197848ed5&k=36427 Hope that brings you up to date...................HF&RV

Hi bubbacut,....I tried going into that section months ago and recieved te dreaded 'blue screen' too,.....I have know idea why,....and I suspect it's part of the PKG.,...sometimes works sometimes doesn't ,.......as for your storage ,....everyone that has an MSN free account,..recieves,...3mb's of storage,..add up your two figures 1.4 & 1.6 ......there's your 3mb's........deleting posts doesn't affect your storage space unless you have posted pictures in it,.....or added an attachemnet,.....extra storage is available through MSN (for a fee of course) ,.....that is why I leave pics for a day or two ,..then delete them after I figure people have read & seen the post,........ as far as I see posting links & addresses' do not count towards your free storage HF&RV
Thanks Les!
