Hi Les ! Can you tell me if the main street is Ste-Catherine or Ontario corner of Moreau (your post 7737) ? I think it is Ste-Catherine. Nice pic, thanks for posting it. JM
Hello JMH ,..I will lookthat up for you ,.I believe it's StCatherine,...but oddly enough I just cleared those pics thisafternoon to make room for others........hahahaha and so there is nothing for me to look at right now,...You must have caught the tail end of those pics,....I will check into that for you ,.but I am just getting dinner ready ,.and we have guests tonight,.....so bare with me ,..and I'lldo what I can perhaps later or in the morning...( but as I said my recollection is that you are referring to StCatherine St photo. ________________________________________________________HF&RV
Hello Sabby,......in the e-mail I sent to your hotmail account,..I thought I had posted 2 separate links to a story ,.that I thought you might find of interest,....but as it turns out I posted one good webaddress,.....and the second one is only a notation as to where I had one stored on my Comp.////////so check out the original link ,..and I will get you the Globe & Mail piece as well,....if you want . Sorry 'bout that Chief ___________________________________HF&RV________________
Just found this pic of my mom and her sister ~1925 in St. Henri. They also had sheds there (snow too, lol). Take a look at those fashions, real cool, eh?
Steve, nice pictures of the 2816, are you aware that that engine was brought up from the USA's east and moved all the way to North Vancouver and rebuilt from a coal burner to an oil burner by the crew at BC Rail's Royal Hudson steam shed?
Hi JMH,..I have just spent the last half hour, trying to find where I found those Montreal pics you asked about ,.I have the pictures at hand,...but I can't find (or Recall ) right now , the actual site, where I found them.......I won't forget,.and I will come across it again,...When I do ,..I definetly will let you know,........I still think it was StCatherine,....but Ontario is not a bad guess either,........see what the power of suggestion can do.............hahahahah ***********************************************************HF&RV
I think someone last week or the week before,.had mentioned something about the Nat,.not being the only pool to visit ,...and they were referring to the one on Saint Helen's Island,............that was a large pool,........with a nice looking well built old building,....I wonder if they still use those facilities,...I know they have a big rowing facility there on the Island ,.that they built into the length of the island,....... I don't think that rowing facility was there when I lived in Montreal,....was it added for the Olympics,....or is it even newer than that ? _______________________________________Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Hi Les ! Here is what I have just found in Lovell’s Directory (Ste-Catherine & Moreau, 1950) In the pic, we can « detect. » the name D. Masson....on the brick wall under « Buvez Coca Cola. » sign. In Lovell’s list, we see: Dom. Masson, 3142 St. Catherine St. E. So maybe it is/was Ste-Catherine St. JM
Grammah2 ( Betty),.........Do you recognize this house,..and the name of the road its on ? .......I'll bet you know exactly where it is.......... __________________________________HF&RV____________________
Thanks for that update,...JMH, it was bugging me that I couldn't Remember exactly where it was.............hahahah but I'm glad I stuck with my first thought (StCatherine),.......now if I can only recall the original site I found it on..............(oh well one step at a time) .........................................................................................(HF&RV)....................
Hi JMH I'm sure you are familiar with this site,....but I thought I would post it again just in case,......but I imagine that you ,....Fresco,...& Guy,......MPU,......are well acquainted with anything to do with bus's http://www.busdrawings.com/Transit/Quebec/Montreal/montreal_1950ccfc40a.htm in anycase you may appreciate it's content........ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++hf&rv++++
Thanks Les for this site. It’s my first visit. I particularly appreciate the photo of the CCF Brill, fleet 644, model C-40A, 40 seats, gas engine (1950). JM
Thanks Steve I do have that one bookmarked,...it has quite a variety of old Montreal Postcard type pics,......a gal on the point site posted that one too,.......that's where I first saw it,....interesting now I see alot more Montreal type sights almost seem to be sharing pictures,....which is good,...I imagine as time goes on more & more sights will merge their collections,...but I keep looking for those 3d cows,.haven't found those things yet..........hahahaha ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((HF&RV))
Hi Steve I Remember the race track being put in on Ile Notre Dame,.......but that long waterway on the rightside of the picture,.(south shore side) was not there ,for Expo that I Remember ,.....it looks like it was specifiaclly designed for rowing,....which would lead me to believe that ,that part was added for the Olympics,I do Remember the Big O,'we' ,...stuff being built but not that spot on the island ............just can't Remember that part. Oh well 'old timers' setting in I guess
Hi Bubbacut,........I came across this site ,with a picture of a House in Point Claire,....called the 'Pilon House' built in the early 1700's..........I wonder if there's a family connection ? You never know,.. http://pointeclaire.ville.montreal.qc.ca/Fr/visiteurs/MaisonAntoine/MaisonAntoine.asp It may be of interest at the very least,............... ________________________________________________HF&RV
Hi Betty (Grammah2),.........the address of that old stone house,is: 1950 Montreal Rd Cornwall,Ontario K6H-6L2 .............................................................................................................HF&RV
Hi JMH,..Fresco .....MPU.....etc etc ,.....another link re: trolley collections. http://home.gwi.net/trolley/collection/world/2.html This one I know has been posted, but sometimes they add new things,..and so every so often I go through the sites I have 'bookmarked' in my favourites,....and find new stuff. it may have some re-newed interest for some of you,..... __________________________________________________________HF&RV
Jimmy (kungfu) Here's an old building down in Chinatown area,.......and I don't know if it had any elevators in it,or if you ever worked on it,.......but I just thought it Had Your Name all over it, Whadya Think ?....................hahahahahah Have Fun & Remember Verdun
JMH here's two more photo's for you to study , if you like,...both from the 50's era Montreal,....... the first picture looka a little older than the 50's ...................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
...and for all our members ,who haven't seen Verdun ,for a while,Here is an Aerial shot, which I have posted before,.so for those of you who have seen it.I haven't lost my marbles,.I just thought I'd put it up there again for many of our new members,. _________________________________Have Fun & Remember Verdun
I shall study these pictures all night while watching Canadians , go HABS go , thanks pal , as for the Kung Fu School, I should have worked for Kung Fu Elevator Co . hahahahah Jimmy P>S I wish more people would read My articles on Blue Bonnets , P.P.S. J M the kids hockey team from Verdun are the Leafs , Verdun Leafs Jimmy
Hi Jimmy ( kungfu) ,.....I think a lot of people read your BB stories,..I know I read almost every post on this board,...and I'm sure everyone enjoys the read,..anything with that type of detail about our history from our own backyard,is (I believe anyway) always important to know,......because you never know when information comes in handy,.......keep up the work Jimmy .... ______________________________________________HF&RV
Hi Jimmy.....I read your stories too and found them to be fascinating as well, but not surprised about the government involvement, they always have to poke their noses in and ruin everything....Do you have more stories?....Dianne
Les, these are great old pics. If the exact locations can be determined, I would like to try to take a today photo of each spot. I was on Verdun at Melrose avenues today, and took a few pics, even wandered into the lane behind the pool hall between Melrose & Desmarchais. Note the melting snow, it was Very pleasant today................. ............mpu
Well sorry about that last attempt to 'copy & paste' an article re: the sale of the Hippodrome,....but basically it supports alot of what Jimmy (kungfu) was writing about. It must have been to large an article (or some sort of block on the page),but you can 'Google' the Sale of the Hippodrome,..and you will come to the same article.......
Wow ,what a great looking day in Verdun,..........Blue Sky,Sun Shinning, Snow Melting.........those were laways the days tthat signalled the end of Winter,.....the next sign is when the kids start hitting the streets in droves,..to play ball hockey, since the ice on the outdoor rinks is atarting to disappear.......Remember as a kid trying to elongate the Winter experience by skating on a rink 'quickly melting' you would slop through the corners,,,where only a few weeks ago it was 'bumpy ice'.....you never like to fall in the corners...hahahahaha or skating and jumping over some of the dead patches where the asphalt pavement was coming through (real hard on the skate blades,......not to mention the sudden stop,.or launch into a flying position.............hahaha Thanks for the pics MPU,...........was that parking meters on the side street as well as Verdun Av?? Greed kills Everything
Here's a couple of locations for you MPU , one was University,......the second is actually further East in front of the old Dupuis Frere's ................checkout all the signage,.......it sure looked alive >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>HF&RV
This isn't the site that I tried to post earlier,..but it too deals with the lands of BlueBonnets,.....(Hippodrome),... http://www.hour.ca/news/news.aspx?iIDArticle=6398 Seems using the land for affordable housing was an issue,.....but I would bet that unless the developper(usually a friend of Gov't) stand to make millions ,.then Affordable Housing would be out..................
MPU Thanks muchly for those photos. Sure does bring back memories....remember as a kid your mom telling you to keep your winter boots on, even when the cement was peeping through the snow .......because........ the ground was still frozen and you'd catch your death by pneumonia. Whatever that meant!!! Gads, I love those pics. {} This is a bouquet of spring flowers for ya. Cheers.
Good one popdog Us girls from Verdun would understand that logic, I think. Myself, I had to go to the husband store twice, but ended up with a keeper .
It was great to see those pictures from the Melrose Desmarchais area. We used to spend hours in the lane behind Woodland school playing 'wall baseball'. Used a lacrosse ball and baseball mitts. The object was to bounce the ball off the house opposite the school and try to get it to hit the ground before the opposition could catch it. We played for a long time until Mr Leonard who lived in the house finally lost his cool and came after us. I'm amazed he held out as long as he did.
Hi Ralph, Love the pics. If you're ever driving down Manning Avenue and have the camera could you catch a shot of 1078 Manning Avenue. I lived there as a kid and haven't seen the place in years. Thanks, Walter
Hi Grammah2 ,....I'll see if I can find some further info on that house,.....That would be too bad if it was demolished,..but Ontario, has been failry diligent in maintaining it's heritage type buildings,....friends of mine all around your area that had b--centenial homes ,.have been protected since the early 70's (very early) ,..and perhaps even since the very late 60's,........after expropriating a lot of homes along the river ,.to make way for the Dam,....and creating the parkway where you now live,.....Ontario started protecting many things,.......I'll see what I can find out,...........Thanks for checking it out........
Hi Betty (Grammah2),........check this out,....it sure looks to me like it's 1950 Montreal Road,........but maybe I'm missing something......let me know if this si familiar : http://www.amo.on.ca/Content/NavigationMenu/Events/CRSTMunicipalitiesandDSSABsConference/2007CRSTMunicipalitiesandDSSABsConference/default.htm .........................it may be another municipality of Ontario,.??
I wonder if tha building is in the "United Counties of Stormont,Dundas and Glengarry" and the picture although being right below the address on Montreal Road,...is actually where a NAVCAN bldg is ,....... "Sorry bout that Chief"............missed it by that much....... HF&RV
For all the members who are Bus Fans,....I came across this site today appropriatley named : http://www.busfanplace.com/ There's plenty of examples here as well as a section re: Quebec Hope it's of some interest to a few of you................
Hi DannyB,..........Just thought I'd mention that in the guest book on the Point site,....there is a message from a Gregory B,........who now lives in Saskatoon, but who lived for quite a while in the Point,.......I thought I'd let you know ,in case it's someone you are related to ,or happen to know ,....his e-mail address is available in the open guestbook,.on the front page of the Point site. Today's date March 08/06 Do with the info ,what you will............Hope all is well these days.........regards from the Westcoast (Very We_t Coast, today) ___________________________________________________

Let me guess,....inspite of my choice to be a non-believer,....your going to tell me it's time I see the 'light'.................right.................hahahahaha
Chatty Kathy Dolls...How about "SPARKLE PLENTY DOLLS" I think these were from the comic strip "Blondie&Dagwood" They were rubber with blonde hair made from a mop, I believe...that's the only doll we could afford back in the '40's..they sure have come along way today/ cookie
Hi Bob bubbacut,...I must have missed something,.?? am I a little slow today or did I miss a post........(for those who haven't been with us all that long) bubbacut was supposed to remind me of a light for my deck ,so I can BBQ during Winter months.....-----------some may think were 'heretics'............hahahahaha
That's too bad about Boom Boom Geofrion,......because this coming Saturday was to be the 'Retirement ' of his Jersey at the Habs Home Game,.......but Boomer says he will look forward to the ceremony regardless,of his recent diagnosis,Here's a link to the Gazette Story mentioning the event/and cancer finding: http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/sports/story.html?id=c482b475-1d4d-47a1-8807-6a27bdc62622&k=66565 Old Boomer always had and still does have great optimism about life, and a great sense of humour too.
Got it ...........hahahaha It's funny I started looking for a post that I must have missed, and so I looked up the last few days for a post like that,by checking for msg's posted around midnight..........So I was on the right track ,.but when I didn't see any I thought I was slipping my cable...............hahahahaha you got me! hahaha
Being a Habs fan forever ,...I have had to listen to the fools who are the fans of 'leafs,.canucks etc etc .........and whenever they would try to kid me or bug me I would remind them that if the Habs retired jersey's for the calibre of play of some other teams retirement jersey's then ,........the sweaters wouldn't be wide enough for the numbers..............hahahah
bubbacut,.....Looks like Gainey just saved $4Million US,...in trading Jose,.......but I would also suspect that Aberschier (who is Ok as a goalie),.....he may never play a game for the Habs,..because there's still alot of time left before the Trade Deadline,..and there are many teamsd who need a goaltender,......especiallly here in the West,...and Colorado ,.would Never Deal or Trade with the Canucks,(same dicision and all that),..but they might do a deal for Aberschier,...(Habs have other good golaies in the wings...they always do)........So perhaps a trade for some bigger Forwards,...or an Offensive Defensemen ,may take place,.......I like Gainey's work ethic,..and everywhere he's been he's been a Winner,..........I would look for Ribeiro to be dumped at some point,...he has the same off-ice attitude that Jose had,....they don't seem to mind losing,.......when they lost ,those guys would take it in stride like it didn't matter.....When Gainey startsd a season ,I think his objective is to Go for the Cup,..........and not just maybe be in the playoffs.........I applaude this move ,and I hope he (Gainey) works some more magic, As for old Jose Colorado would be a good fit....still a familiar background language wise,...and out of the Montreal Spotlight..........So watch for Jose to now make a miraculous (sp?) recovery ,.from his sore heel (slipped on the ice).......I think he became Gun Shy,...........from the ever watching eyes of the press..................I'm glad he's gone, and I've thought that for years
Anyone recognize this place...? .................................................................................the steeple in the back can help with the locale,.....but the name I'm sure is familiar to some
Well here's a place that needs no introduction,..... Checkout the Newspaper stand on the corner beside the Forum (top photo),.Remember these newspaper stands all over Montreal.......and if I Remember correctly was there not a 'Big Newspaper Store' that news papers from all over the world,.....Guy & StCatherine roughly(?),......my oldman would get me to pick up the New York Times,..once in a while ,....imagine you can sit in your own house,.and reas a newspaper from any where in the world now,............but you wouldn't have had that exposure & adventure of going 'Downtown'........Fun Stuff as kid...........hahahaha nowadays we wouldn't think of sending one of our kids (no matter how old) Downtown on their own................I guess were officially our parents...........hahahahaha ______________Have Fun & Remember Verdun____________________
I agree with you Les, time for Jose to go , with all his family problems , starting with step brothers and father who were in the load sharking business ( and if you have ever been involved in owing these kind of people money you know what I mean, they will do ANYTHING to collect), the judge gve them a slap on the wrist, his father in law in jail for problems with Natilie Simard , fights with his next door neighbour on Nuns Island , a doc . on and =on and on , think he is probably a great goalie , but way to much baggage here in Montreal , he will do well in Colorado , he is good goalie , but press are on him now . Jimmy
Hi kungfu ,bubbacut,...I agree that outside pressure combined with family troubles (guilty by association),..and the steroid accusation,....etc etc ,..and playing in Montreal scrutinized constantly,.is a lot to handle...........but it's 'Poor Performance' that cause's most of his troubles,.......because he didn't complain (nor did many others) when his calibre of play was top notch........so if the pressure didn't bother him when he played well, inspite of having the 'same' problems & being ,'still' in the same family,...then I call BS. He had an outstanding several months during one season a few years ago,.when he single handedly got the Habs into the playoffs......(yahoo there;as an achievement,.....but the rest of the team was awful)......and the management at the time saw fit to give him a colossal raise to $5million USD's,....then he went into the tank,...then when his press clippings don't look so good ,he bounces back,..then the heats off,....he goes in the tank,......I agree he can look stellar at times,...but he hasn't been terrific on a constant basis for 3 years,....I hope he does Ok in Colorado ,perhaps it's what he needs to 'find ' his game,.....and really if your not playing for the Habs (& reasonably well) then I don't really care how he does. Let's hope the new additions do well right away, I beleive we all wanted & hoped that Jose was the answer, but reality dictates that he was Not,..too bad. Whether he does well in Colorado, reminds me of What the Cat said ,.when he shit on the carpet.................."That Remains to be Seen" .........hahahahahaha ps: $5million USD's should be able to get you a good therapist. I'm almost positive that $5mil,.....would go along way to solving a lot of most people's problems.................................(Just an Opinion) Remember the guy who walks into the 'Shrink's office' .......and says "Hey Doc ,you gotta help me I 've got some real problems"................the Shrink cuts him off mid sentence and says "Wait a minute ,...wait a minute,..........Everyone has Problems"......and "before I start treating you I want to tell you that I charge $500 per hour ,with a minimum charge of 5 hours,....paid up front,....then we go from there" the Patient says "No Problem Doc,.....here's $2500 hundred up front . The Doc says,,,,,,,,,"Well that Takes Care of My Problem".........."What's Yours" hahahahahah Have Fun & Remember Verdun_________________________________
Here you go all the Ed Sullivan stuff you want,....Have a look around ,he sure had a lot of future Talent on his show,.............Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis were paid $200 bucks total for there appearance on his show callled the 'Toast of the Town' http://www.edsullivan.biz/html/topo.htm _______________________________ _________________________________________________________hf&rv
You misunderstood me Les, I did not mean Jose could not handle the situation, I mean the Montreal Canadian organization WOULD not handle the situation anymore, so trade jim
Yes katkal,...your absolutely right of course it's the Greenspot,....and many people did frequent that restaurant,..........but another I seem to Remember on te way up Atwater Hill was that old Tudor Style Bar at the bottom of the hill across from the Atwater Market,................I cannot think of the name right now,(and I don't know why.........said with a Robin Leach accent),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahaha
I couldn't have agreed more Jimmy (kungfu).........Montreal as I have contended for years needed to get rid of Jose,.........and I for one am very happy to see this done,.......I also agree with the assesment that this now is the start of Gainey's Official Stamp on the team...........They already have been playing better hockey under his tutelage,....(with the exception of the recent leaf fiasco)............hahahahah but in keeping with an excuse based theme,........they were a very tired team,.with the amount of games in a short span,........just hope they fare better against Our other arch rivals the beantown Bruins......................... _________________________________________________________hf&rv
Jimmy (kungfu) I know you are good pals with Cato,.......How is he doing these days ,.he used to pop on here once in awhile,.....He would be a guy who must have some great photo's from his tenure in the NHL,................. I should also check with old Al (Leishman) and see if he has some good old photo's he wouldn't mind sharing with us from the old Forum,........He gave me a few pictures years ago,.and I'll have to see if Ican find them..................Hockey (is there anything more Montreal than that ??).....................
Bob, I really enjoy taking pictures, and am glad to be able to reply to/and fill some requests. I very much want to take modern day views of some of the old pictures that have been placed here by Les and others. The area around the old Forum will be quite interesting. If anyone else would like to see specific area, just ask. Now that the days are getting longer, it is easier to take photos. During the winter I was going to work and coming home in the dark. mpu
Once again MPU,....you have gone out of your way to bring us a very real image of Verdun,......Thank you of Course,........these images do convey (in colour) the images we stored in our heads..........to travel these streets & see that really nothing has changed (or little has changed),.......immediately reminds me of most of my trips Back to Verdun,.....where no matter how I try ,........it just Never seems the same ( even though almost everything seems the same).......Thank You Again, your efforts & input are much appreciated................... ............................................................................best regards from the Westcoast
Charity begins at Home There are many helpful organisations,& if you help at some of these Great,........but for those who just pay lip service (cause it sounds good),........I would suggest you Help the closest person to you ,whether it be your kids,.or others,.....and Don't Worry About Posting what wonderful things these Organisations do.............Unless you Actually DO make a difference........and if you helped anyone today ,then you already made a difference, and you know you don;t need a self congratulatory pat on the back.............................................Now Get out there an Kick a Dog or Something...................hahahahaha and as I've always said ,"if you ever need a helping hand........................ ..................then look down at the end of Your Arm" Now Don't shoot the messenger,......just do good stuff,....and people will know ,......without the solicited accollades.............. _______________________________________________________HF&RV

Some familiar old palces from Montreal, .....Mom'45 (Linda) originally posted this picture for us,..the Texan,.......was in it several times ,.as I was also in the old Forum Tavern right across from this place in the Forum of course,....also was in the old 'Stache.......just up the street behind the Texan, half way up Closse,......and of course across the street from the Texan, was the old Clover (?) upstairs etc etc and of course this place needs no introduction 'Chalet BBQ' inside the old Atwater Market......Remember the smells of all the food, ..and inside the Chalet at the Lookout...................... rode a few of these didn't ya ?? Wherever do you find those photos Les? Yeah, I heard about the Forum moving. What's there now? I also knew David Fennario. He lived somewhere on LaSalle Blvd close to Wellington St.. My brother and he were/are friends. My brother wrote some music for one of his plays (forget which one). One of the actors I worked with at Revue Theatre was in his first big play On the Job. The thing about plays (I've written two and they were produced in the late seventies) is that a good director can make a bad play good. My friend gave me a copy of the One the Job script after the play closed. On paper, it was not good at all. Maurice Podbrey was able to elevate it to something special. I went to Dave's house once and he had bookshelves of unopened books on Marxism.. I always wondered what his problem was. He seemed to ber rebelling for the sake of rebelling. To make himself look cool? He became famous with On the Job and Balconville. I found him rather snobbish...sorry shy is acceptable when you're 2 but at 22?. I was never impressed with him. My brother had told me about his disease and I'm sorry to hear that --- we are all human after all and I wish him and his family luck.. I adored Michel Tremblay's work and still do. He was so original and creative. I rememer when Les Belles Soeurs became such a hit. I also remember he said he would never have his work translated. Later he ate his words (money) and in the early eighties I bumped into him at a theatre in the East Village. I said hi to him and he spoke to me in english. Amazing how Bill 101 was forgotten in New York City! I guess hunger will quickly change your original ideals. Those are my memories. Where can I subscribe to Mirror magazine? Is it still around? Thanks again for all the information and especially the stats on poverty. Yeah, poverty -yeah-- it's a hell of a thing especially when you're a kid... Dolly

Well for the Habs fans , a bit of sad news,.......tonight was to be the ceremony to retire Boom Boom Geofrion's Jersey,.....He was quite honored ,when told of this a few weeks back,.and said he looked forward to Special Night,...........well a few days later he was dianosed with cancer,.as you know,...but he still sasid he'd be there tonight,......then just on Thursday ,he had to inform the Canadiens, that he would not be able to come to this evenings ceremony,.........he was right ,cause he passed away overnight.....................Salute Boom Boom http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/index.html ... another great Montrealer............................................HF&RV
well another Verdun Connection,...the article in the Gazette re: the passing of Boom Boom Geoffrion,.....is written by a friend of mine,..Bill Beacon,......who as young College Students,.lived at #26 Rielle (very cheap rent............hahahahaha) this house was literally very close to the old Verdun Police Station,......blah blah blah....However many a party was had at this house,..(seems every day was a party inthose days) ......here's a shot taken in the morning (you can tell by the shadows on the table,........that's Bill Beacon in the corner,....Gerry...(my sisters friend at the time,.......still a friend of mine today)........I get a laugh,.because the house was furnished in what we termed 'Early Depression' era furniture...........hahahahaha checkout the old wallpaper (probably 50 years old then)........Notice that there is a box of cereal on the table ,..as well as the Real Breakfast of Champions, a 'stubby' bottle of Molson Ex.............hahahahah there's a plastic container with a bag of milk in it ( do they still sell milk like that nowadays ??) also behind the utensil holder on the far side of the table,.you can make out another Molson bottle............Gerry usually drank tea in the morning ,So I suspect that the beer nearest the edge of the table was probably mine............hahahah (Ok it was)...................man we were young ,my guess we were 18ish? hahahahah .......what else would young aspiring writers and business men be doing at that hour but smoking and drinking..............not long after this era,.we all drifted west.....in increments,......and Bill returned home (Montreal) after flying around the Province of BC ,writing and covering Grace McCarthy who was a high level BC politician....... being all Verdun folk in the picture ( and taken by yours truly),....I I just thought I'd share this picture of days gone by.................hahahahaha Clean Living that's the answer.....................hahahahaha BTW I can Remember going to the Sally Ann on NotreDame St to get a lot of the old 'Early Depression' furniture........ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Hi Sabby,.......I have a very vague recollection of a Laura Secord store ,..in Verdun ,on Wellington,.just past the Woolworths 5-10-15,........which was in turn just past the Gagnon Store near Curch & Wellingto,,,,,,,,,,,,,,However I am wondering if I just 'think ' it was there (power of suggestion) or if it actually was..............Laura Secord (to me) was a store that you only went to once a year,...near Easter,.......and if you were really lucky you got one of those Eggs with the Real Yolk...............hahahahah ortherwise known (or should have been) as a Cavity City Egg..................hahahahahah Very Good Question Sabby i will see what I can find out,..........and if anyone else outthere knows,.....then by all means ,please jump in and help us......................... somewhere past the Woolworths, which is the next store after Gagnon's......(but I'm guessing now).................... ..Just for good measure I thought I'd re-post this shot of the Laura Secord Store,.on StCatherine ........................................it's been posted many times ,by many of us,....but since you asked (sort of) I thought it worthy of re-posting,.,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahahaha ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++HF&RV+++++++++++

Les, My Dad was a train ''nut'', and I have 18 boxes of ''stuff'' that I just finished looking through. There is some junk, some not to bad, and two real nice steam locos and tenders, one CN, one CP. He also bought an old Canadiana train from the ''Bradford Exchange once. I will take pics of some of the nicest, and post them here sometime. He had an engineers cap with a few pins. Of course I supplied him with every CPR pin that I could obtain for 25plus years..............................and any other railway that I could also.....note a BC Rail pin in the third photo...................mpu.
My Dad had been a member of the Mason for some years, and I found this Obituary cliiping in a Bible that I found. Arthur J. The Legion should know if something like that is true........?? ___________________________________________________________
Thanks Les, The Kon Tiki was a favourite of mine. After we got married at the United Church on St. Catherine, my husband and I went to the Kon Tiki for drinks. Couldn't afford Hawaiin Honeymoon so that was the closest we got. The photos are awesome!

Hi Les ! We have spent a few days in Montreal visiting our youngest daughter, helping her in her shopping. We’ll be grand parents by the end of May. But I didn’t have time to travel by bus or metro or visiting Verdun. I will post some pics soon. As to your question about the location of Laura Secord on Wellington in the 50s: Lovell’s Directory (1955) locates it at 4007 . JM
Hi Sabby, I remember the United Church on St Catherine. It was almost hidden by the store fronts but then you would see the church entrance. I remember looking inside and it was a beautiful church. I think it was also the main church of the United Church for the Montreal area. Your wedding sounds like it was fantastic. The Kon Tiki was the place to go. I remember Don Chevrier's Sports Talk Show on CJAD radio used to be broadcast live from the Kon Tiki.
Hey Les, Hmmmm, your photos didn't show up. It was some volcanic drink. Can't remember the name but there was fog coming out of it. I just loved those drinks!
Incredible MPU , as much as I appreciate these pictures,........I also realise that Nothing is the Same..........I have selected certain pictures from your......group of pics ,......and i feel somewhat alienated from...Verdun ,yet also an affiliation to it,............I'm not sure if I like the feeling or not..............hahahahah I think it's the Stark Contrast , of some of the store fronts,........it seems in trying to keep the old ,they have invariably mixed in the new................I guess i am not explaining it correctly ,...............but in anycase I still Really Appreciate your time & effort to post these pics The pictures of the old "Da Michelles" restaurant, corner of Hickson & Wellington,...........Remind me of many late nights , Thanks for these pics ................
I suppose it's the old Adage :"You Can't Go Home Again" but it sure would be nice to try (via) Our memory banks.......................I can see how a re-union (should a number of us be able) would be a Real Chance for many of us to re-visit Our past,.........and perhaps re-visit Verdun, at least one more time. ................somehow I think that's just a thought, .......................but what a thought it is Have Fun and Remember Verdun
I understand exactly what you mean Les, I have been around Verdun more often lately with grandson playing hockey on the travelling team, and let me assure you , Verdun has not changed a lot, have to admit , in some places its sprucedup , but , hey , these buildings are older, however lanes and streets are still there and the same. Yesterday I had to go to Montreal General Hospital , to make an appointment for my wife's radiation treatment, Went in from Ile Perrot along the 20 past Dorval and into the city , exited Atwater , up Atwater past Childrens and Old Forum, up the hill and turned right at the top then up Cote des Neiiges past front of building and around the back on Cedar Ave. in to park, what a job to find a parking spot , flashed a fiver and of course the guy said leave your car with me and the keys in it , I shall look after it, plus ca change plus cest parait , the more things change the more they stay the same, Montreal is still a great city . have fantastic day jim
I just had the most wonderful "remembering" of all. My sister, who I haven't seen for about 12 or so years, just came and spent a week out here in Vancouver. I should have recorded all our conversations, for posterity sake. Soooo much fun and sooo much remembering. It's good for the soul!!!! Cheers.
Sounds like you had a nice visit Mom'45 ,......it 's always nice to reminice (sp?).... did you ask her if she had any old photographs from Growing up in Montreal ?? Get her to visit on-line ,..she may enjoy the site?? Have Fun and Remember Verdun .......................................................
My mother worked at the United Church on St Catherines for many years as a guide during the tourist season. She loved that church. There were a few teachers fromVHS who were members of that church.. Miss Watt and Miss Coveyduck were both members.. When we were kids, they would bus us once a year to that church for an annual Sunday School service. It was very impressive to fill that church and see all the school buses lined up along St Catherine St. I have heard that they plan to tear down those store fronts and make the entire church visible again. Les_F Too bad, but my sis doesn't "do" computers.......sooooo......makes for long telephone calls. She also doesn't hoard junk (as she calls it). So there you go, even being brought up in the same household, we're as different as night and day. My bro is the same way, doesn't seem to be sentimental at all. Guess I got this gift for the whole family. Sometimes I feel like the family historian and custodian of all the family "stuff", but got to add that I'm a sentimental old hoot, and I love collecting all things "old". A little note: even though I was away for a week, I still managed to visit the site every couple of days. Keep up all the good "rememberings". Cheers.
As Steve mentioned in his post Red Storey,.has just checked out,.....He won a couple of Grey cups with the Toronto Argonaughts,...aside from being a top notch referee in the NHL,........he reffed a lot of games and saw a lot of Super stars of their day,...........one story I recall, and attribute to Red Storey,....was way back when they didn't have glass, but fencing,..a Woman (supposedly) grabbed his sweater, when he was backed up against the boards,..and said to him "If I was your husband,.I 'd put arsenic in your Coffee"..........Red's reply ,......."If I was your husband ,I'd Drink It".........hahahahahahaha ......................................................................................CYA Red, http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=ffb04f1e-e85c-46cb-b8e3-e6b460cb7855&k=87468 this article just appeared on-line moments ago,......a little slow ,as Steve told us about it a little while ago. ................................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
very once in a while, a second-string player will come off the bench to play the game of a lifetime. That's what happened to Roy Alvin "Red" Storey of the Toronto Argonauts during the 1938 Grey Cup. Red Storey was not a bad all-around athlete. He played with the Argos for a few years, earned a big-league tryout in baseball, and once scored twelve goals in a single lacrosse game. He played hockey for a couple of American teams and the Montr챕al Royals, too. But he never had a game like his storied Grey Cup match against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on December 12, 1938.
Wow you sure got a 'pileof pics in that post',....say that fast fifty times......... the twentieth one down ,.shows the frontage on Wellington just past the old City & District Savings bank (Btw one of ourmembers posted pictures of a couple of those old banks they gave kids long ago...............maybe they would post them again for us),....However back to the Wellington St frontage,...I see they have a .99cent Pizza joint,....then a Tabacco Shop,....then the old Normans Store,....but that sign isn't lit up,....just where the awning starts for the Pharmacy on the corner,...is where my front gallery used to be,........I sat out there and did some People watching on Wellington many a day.................Good old Memories MPU ,........enjoy your dinner in Cornwall, this evening,..........and Thanks Again for all those photo's ........................................................................................................................hf&rv

The History of the Academy Awards, On April 14, 1969, the 41st Academy Awards ceremonies moved to the brand new Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Music Center of Los Angeles County. It was the first major event for this now world-renowned cultural center. The Awards remained at the Music Center until 1986, when the ceremonies returned to the Shrine Auditorium for the 60th and 61st Awards. For a dozen years, the event alternated venues — the 62nd, 64th, 65th, 66th, 68th and 71st Awards were held at the Music Center, while the 63rd, 67th, 69th, 70th, 72nd and 73rd were at the Shrine. This was found in this weeks edition of the MontrealMirror,.......is this the Fish & Chip shop that was on the otherside of Bannantyne diagonally across (roughly) from Barry's Fish & Chip's............anyone out there know ? (Roger Legault’s father Gerard owned the Jacques Patates restaurant for 30 years at Bannantyne and Argyle as well as an adjacent laundromat. The two places recently closed for a few months, and when Legault tried to reopen, Verdun forbade it. Their policy is to force such small businesses to transform into housing.

Here's a link for funny stuff. http://www.killsometime.com/ Steve

Les...........Here's a link to Montreal stuff. http://www.collectionscanada.ca/05/0533/053302_e.html Steve
Les..... The rowing was added for the summer Olympics, Steve

Hello Ralph ! Great pictures of Verdun. You wrote: « it was Very pleasant 쨩 Not surprising: it was in Verdun... Thank you very much ! JM
Cheers.
Les and m p u , thanks great entertainment , photos are fantastic , habs are losing 2 1 to philly

I hope this bill is not still outstanding.......imagine what it would be at today.......... ....note the postage was 6 cents................mpu

Thanks bubbacut,.......I take it all back there is a (hockey) god.........hahahahah
bubbacut,.....Looks like Gainey just saved $4Million US,...in trading Jose,.......but I would also suspect that Aberschier (who is Ok as a goalie),.....he may never play a game for the Habs,..because there's still alot of time left before the Trade Deadline,..and there are many teamsd who need a goaltender,......especiallly here in the West,...and Colorado ,.would Never Deal or Trade with the Canucks,(same dicision and all that),..but they might do a deal for Aberschier,...(Habs have other good golaies in the wings...they always do)........So perhaps a trade for some bigger Forwards,...or an Offensive Defensemen ,may take place,.......I like Gainey's work ethic,..and everywhere he's been he's been a Winner,..........I would look for Ribeiro to be dumped at some point,...he has the same off-ice attitude that Jose had,....they don't seem to mind losing,.......when they lost ,those guys would take it in stride like it didn't matter.....When Gainey startsd a season ,I think his objective is to Go for the Cup,..........and not just maybe be in the playoffs.........I applaude this move ,and I hope he (Gainey) works some more magic, As for old Jose Colorado would be a good fit....still a familiar background language wise,...and out of the Montreal Spotlight..........So watch for Jose to now make a miraculous (sp?) recovery ,.from his sore heel (slipped on the ice).......I think he became Gun Shy,...........from the ever watching eyes of the press..................I'm glad he's gone, and I've thought that for years
Anyone recognize this place...? .................................................................................the steeple in the back can help with the locale,.....but the name I'm sure is familiar to some

Dolly

Hey Carol, So what's the weather like out there now? I'm in Edmonton and winter finally arrived. Don't you miss the seasons?
Thanks Jim for the info re Laura Secord... Dolly

Cheers.

very once in a while, a second-string player will come off the bench to play the game of a lifetime.

Yes now that you mention it Bubbacut,..I have seen him reffing an oldtimers game,...and he was with out a doubt,...a real 'Character'........... ..........certainly as all these 'caharacters' that we grew up watching start to pass,...it reminds us of just how 'fast Time Flies'...........................I think we were very lucky to have seen the different sports celebs that we did,....and for the most part they all had a sense of humour ,as well as a certain 'prescence' about them......they had some class,.................the celebs for the most part nowadays,....certainly leave a lot to be desired,.....the barry bonds, the michael jackson's,......these bums instead of coming across with class ,............just come across as a class without the CL...........hahahaha

The ubove was an excerpt from a webpage Detailing the 'History of the Academy Awards,.....so HappyDi it looks like the first Awards ceremony was on April 14th,1969.................. The places now sit empty, filthy and covered in graffiti) http://www.montrealmirror.com/2006/030906/kristian.html also in the same issue was part of the Point debate on te Casino,.......I had never seen this magazine when I lived in Montreal,....and I'm not sure if this is something of a University type mag ?? ............ in anycase it's a different type of paper.................... Check it out if your so inclined,.................if not then turn the page............hahahaha _____________________HF&RV_______________________
