Computers 640K ought to be enough for anybody. - Bill Gates '81 Ever notice how fast Windows runs? Neither did I. Pentiums melt in your PC, not in your hand. Top 12 Ways to
Get Rid of Telemarketers 1. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for Bankruptcy and you could sure use some money. 2. If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "Why do you want to know?" Or you can say, "I'm so glad you asked, because no one seems to care these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died..." When they try to get back to the sell, just continue your problems. 3. If they say they're Joe Doe from the XYZ Company, Ask them to spell their name, then ask them to spell the company name, then ask them where it located. Continue asking them personal questions or questions about their company for as long as necessary. 4. This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: "Hi, my name is Judy and I'm with Canter and Siegel services.... You: "Hang on a second." (Few seconds pause) "Okay, (in a really husky voice) what are you wearing?" 5. Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, "Judy!! Is this really you? Oh, my God! Judy, how have you BEEN?" Hopefully, this will give Judy a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where on earth she could know you from. 6. Say, "No", repeatedly. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an even tempo even as they're trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can keep going until they hang up. 7. If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can muster, "I don't have any friends...would you be my friend?" 8. If they clean rugs: "Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat blood or HUMAN blood. 9. Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary feedback in the form of an occasional "Uh-huh, really, or "That's fascinating." Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. 10. Tell them you work for the same company they work for. Example: Telemarketer: "This is Bill from Mantermills." You: "Mantermills!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?" Telemarketer: "Uh, Dallas, Texas." You: "Great, they have a group there too? How's business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling to employees! Oh well, see ya." 11. Answer the phone. As soon as you realize it is a Telemarketer, set the receiver down, shout or scream, "Oh, my God!!!" and then hang up. 12. Say to the Telemarketer, "Sorry, I can't talk right now but if you'd just give me your home phone number I'll call you when I'm not as busy. When they say in a flustered way that they can't give out their home number say, "Oh, I see...you don't want strangers calling you at your home! Now you know how I feel."   Steve

happydi2 MSN said...

Steve:

I love your ideas on how to get rid of telemarketers. I usually listen politely, then say " Thanks for calling" then hang up.

My dad one time told someone selling magazine subscriptions that he couldn't read { totally not true!!!} and after a short pause the person said he didn't have to know how to read all he had to do was look at the pictures! After my dad racked him over the coals I am quite sure he was looking for another line of work..........

Some lonely people might be glad to receive a call from a telemarketer...what do you think?........Dianne.......Don't call me....I am too busy....haha!!

Mpu ,......you 've outdone yourself again,.......many great Montreal Photos',,,,,i really like seeing the mountain,..Although I do seem to see the trees as miniscule,.....but when they have their foliage covering them they are Fanatastic,..........I was just talking about my brother's property ,and that the largest one on his front lawn is 190' (yea baby one hundred& ninety feet high)..............this is the Westcoast,........and his property backs on to a protected park as well,.......I guess we are spoiled a bit,.....but regardless of how high our Mtns are here,.and our trees,.........Nothing compares to Mont Royal,.....................Thanks for taking the time to take those shots............................                                            hf&rv

MPU   Great pics, some of which brought back memories for me.  I guess the one I like the most is the parking meters.  I haven't used one of those things since I can't remember when.   Next time you visit with your Dad, I would like you to thank him for fighting for our country and helping us to have the freedoms we enjoy today.  So many of these soldiers of freedom have already passed on, but wouldn't it be nice to thank those who are still with us, to show them "We Remember".   Thanks!

Many pictures I've posted of our InnerHarbour here,.....or the Emperess Hotel,....or the scenic views of our Commercial Fishboats,...and buildings during some of my water tours ( for you guys),....were taken from my friends old Fish boat,....wish ........Sadly (depending on who you talk to).........Hit a Rock ,rounding a 'marked bouy'...........and Sank..............I've been busy since last Friday trying to organize a 'rescue' of sorts..............and this may no longer be possible,....as being in the Tidal Waters of the Gorge Waterway here in Victoria ,....has most likely spelled the demise of my friends old boat,.........Salvage may now be the only option,...........I will be on hand to take pictures of, any attmepts, to raise, & hopefully fix this old boat...................It's not a happy day for my buddy,.......but we will do our best to ressurect the old girl,.....over the next few days,.........we are now awaiting equipent to allow the divers to 'float ' the boat to the surface, and move it over to another friend of mines barge & crane,.....Many months of work will be in order to try & fix the old gal.................Otherwise it is SCRAP................................so I hope you enjoyed some of the pictures I posted over the years from Victoria's waterfront,& Harbour from the decks of the 'Pacific Gale'..........it most likely were some of her last,offerrings....................(aside from all the Crab & Salmon & Seafood ,I've been lucky enough to get from the Sea,.......for Free) Doesn't look that big ,and it isn't, but it is a 40' Westcoast Trawler,...................that boat has made a small fortune here on the coast,.................and I think it's seen it's last days............I will take updated pics ,......of the Salvage attempt & the refurbishing,........but I suspect it's History....................

You know what's really History,   MPU ............are the Parking Meters,......a fact of life in today's world,...even on  Wellington Street,................but I Remember a time when there was No meters almost anywhere in Montreal,.........although I beleieve I have some pictures that show those ugly meters raring their ugly heads on both Wellington & Verdun Ave's,.................I'll bet they are on the side streets too........Can You Say "Money Grab".......................Sure you can,........hahahahahah

My 2 cents worth:  I love pictures posted by members that are reminiscent of Montreal/Verdun, as opposed to those "cut & paste" pics that we all can find posted on the net.  It somehow makes the subject more realistic when taken by relative amateurs, especially when they are not posed, a little crooked, a little off-center, or maybe a bit blurry.  Sometimes when posting a pic one wonders (well I do anyway) if anybody is even looking at the pics, so I love to let people know  that I appreciate the effort they have made.   Les_F I must say that water looks very calm and mirror-like, not at all like the heavy winds we have had up here.   Cheers

kungfu MSN said...

Great pictures and thank you for making the effort .   les  the boat looks peacefull, but can imagine the heartache for your friend   Jimmy

les__f MSN said...

Hi Mom'45,........yes the waters here have been relatively calm,..( at least on this end /side of the Island)  but they stopped the BCFerries from sailing on this past weekend due to the wind,......but here it remained calm...... but where the boat went down is really sheltered water anyway,......this waterway is where you can see many kayakers and rowers practising,.etc etc it's beautiful & Sunny here right now ,....but Arthur says it's a little chilly  ,you know Arthur,.......(Our Thermometer),,.............hahahahah   -1 right now ,.not too bad ,but the say it may drop to -15 briefly overnight and then get back to normal.........sure screws up all the trees and plants and stuff,..the Cherry Trees were starting to blossom,..but I don't know if the cold will affect them,....... Not the real cherry trees, but those Japanes Cherry Trees,...that line some of our blvds,.....they look great when blooming,...I'll get out and take saome pics from around here soon,.....those are the 'ornamental cherry's' .........I have two real producing cherry trees in the yard,..but they are still somewhat dormant........blah blah blah...........

No. Streetcars are old fashioned nuisances and they'd just create more problems than they're worth.

Hi  BobB,.....I came across this on the net,....and thought it may be from yourself,......about old Mordecai RichlerBob Bisnett - 02:59pm Jul 3, 2001 (#10 of 69)
Mordecai will be missed. His loss is a giant loss for Canada and the literary world. He told the truth and told us how he felt. That annoyed some who only wanted to hear positive things about themselves. But, c'est la vie, eh? He was an artist. Bravo Mordecai.

Thanks for the info.  Joey's book sounds like a memoir.  Mine is fiction.  It's one of those self discovery first novels.  I place my protagonist in Verdun because I grew up there --- my mother still lives on Brown --- so the research is easy.  I had forgotten a lot of good memories that opened up to me when I looked at this site.  I graduated from VCHS in 1965 and then  took the secretarial course at the Motherhouse on Atwater.  I was taught by the Congregation of Notre Dame nuns (St Willibrod's also) and let's say, they left an impression on me for life.  I later worked as an actress/playwright/dancer at the REvue Theatre on de Maisonneuve and St. Mathieu downtown Montreal.   Does anybody remember "Call Me Uncle" broadcast on CKVL (I think) every Saturday at the Pointe St. Charles Boys and Girls Club?  Thanks for the memories.

Your right POPDOG,.......I beleive you should always look for ways 'to do something',......and not just listen to all the ways why you can't do something In business banks would tell me at times Why they couldn't finance one of my customers,.....and I would remind them that I know why they Can't do it' ,.....so how about telling me How they Can Do It,.......... Never Give Up ,..   ___________________________Also here's a poem I always liked called , It Couldn't Be Done........   (Edgar A.Guest) http://www.cgl.uwaterloo.ca/~beconrad/Verse/it_couldnt_be_done.html It Couldn't Be Done
Somebody said that it couldn't be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it!

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;"
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
    Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
    Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.

Oh my God, Les!  Yes, I remember that facade.  I auditioned for Call Me Uncle and was rejected.  I, like every other hopeful, sang Goodie Goodie.  But I remember the show was done at the Pointe St. Charles Boys Club and not the station.  That would have been around 1960.  And I remember the Melody Makers!  Is Rockhead's and the Black Bottom still around?  I understand Charles Biddle has his own club now.  Wow!

When I go through Verdun I can,t help but point out to anyone with me what use to be what or what was there when I was a Kid. It has seem to gotten to my Daughter. She is rosy82 a few messages back. She just moved to 2nd ave a few months ago and loves it. But I do have a habit of telling her what was where and what is still there. And I seem to forget what I have allready told her.Do you do the same when you visit Verdun after awhile. The Savoys long gone, turned into a consumers dist. which went belly up and now is a drugstore. Sauves' is still there Bennetts hardware still there.Pat's mens wear still there.Woodland and Trevi Pizza still there. New Verdun and Norman's patates still there. Kostas and 2nd ave ave resturants are gone. Da micheles is called something else now. @ for 1 Pizzas run supreme..which is amazing because Verdun has allways had the best pizza ever.Riverview pizza is gone too. The soccer field and old stage at Woodland and Lasalle blvd is long gone. Hail to the money the old folks homes bring in. They also torn down the Verdun municipal stadium and put up more old folks high rises. And the thing that amazes me most. They covered the deep end and took out the diving boards at the nadatorium. Well I hope this gets it off my chest for awhile.    Barry_______________________A good old post................HF&RV

..here's one of Bill's first responses to the site,...SecondAve,..... From: SecondAve  in response to Message 1 Sent: 11/25/2003 10:36 PM I left Verdun in 1958 to join the US navy, and never returned except for a short visit in the 70s -- didn't have much time or interest to look around. My mother and my brother moved to California while I was in the navy. Just off the edge of Nun's island on the Verdun side, there was a round stone or cement(?) dome like structure just under the surface of the river. It looked to be about twenty feet wide. I always asked what the heck it was and no one had the answer. Then one day I happened to be on the boardwalk to see the ice break up and float downstream for the first time. What an event! Nothing could stop a million tons of ice. I decided the dome was to help break up the ice as it travelled over it, otherwise the ice may have tried to go over the island. On a side note, the Victoria bridge was built with the spring ice flow in mind, according to the book "Montreal; Seaport and City. We used to troll for muskey close to the bridge. dangerous looking back, there were many shallow ares and fast water. Here's something I ddidn't Remember hearing before,....that the name for the Grey Nuns (who own a lot of Montreal ),.....was actually a slight against them,..meaning 'Tipsy',.......as Marguerite D'Youville was married to a guy with a business dealing booze,.(and sampling his own product apparently),.......and people made fun of the women who got together to help the poor,............Apparently she's considered a Saint now,........ The “Grey Nuns”
“Grey Nuns” was a name given in mockery to this small group. In French the word for “grey” which can also mean « tipsy » was shouted in contempt at Marguerite and her sisters. The scoffers associated them with François d’Youville’s liquor traffic. Later, when the sisters were well respected, Marguerite chose this name to remind them of their humble beginnings. I was just sitting here thinking (I know, I know, that's dangerous), but isn't it very interesting that most of our parents who were immigrants and moved into The Point, Verdun, Cote St.Paul/Ville Emard, St Henri....didn't stray very far!  I mean they seemed to stay settled there, raised their family there, and in many cases died there.   But interestingly enough, although the next generations are scattered all over the world, we all seem to call the south-end of Montreal Island, "HOME".  I know when someone asks where I am from, without hesitation I reply "Originally from Montreal".  My nan, on the other hand, from Preston, England never said "Originally from.......England."  It was as if England didn't exist for her anymore and this was a new start, in a new land!!!   I wonder why.  Anybody have any insights about this phenomena?   Cheers.

I wonder if the "new" generation, that is those who come after me, will be as staunchly loyal to their roots and as proud of their upbringing.....or.....will it just be a nice place to live and bring up kids?   I meet people all over Canada and the U.S. who are from Verdun and environs eons ago and it is like they just moved away.  The memories are vivid and, need I say, the ethics they learned then are still with them.  Can't be said of a lot of others I meet.   Would be nice to hear from some "newbies" to Verdun and see how they feel about the situation.   And guys, thanks for your input.

Hi  Sabby,......I looked to see ,if your book was available in our local library,......but it doesn't seem to be there,...but there was two books by  Linda Goyette Edmonton In Our Own Words by Linda Goyette/Carolina Jakeway Roemmich, &  Kidmonton: True Stories of River City Kids Do you know the ISBN # for your book,.I can see if the GVPL here would consider buying the book,.( being a Canadian writer) they are very receptive to these suggestions,..... I have requested and/or suggested some books to them over the years ,and they have gone out and got them,....so it can't hurt to have some more exposure for your book Incidentally in searching for your book on the net,....I did find a few sites that use the 'Standing Together' title for their site,..and the theme of the sites was the same as your's Domestic Violence... http://www.standingtogether.org.uk/ http://www.dvip.org/dvip/standing.html   both these sites have the same type of topic............. perhaps they would consider mentioning your book as well,...as one of the links does promote a similar book available on Amazon (as well)...........but these could be further sources of exposure for your book ( can't hurt to ask I guess) Let us know when your Verdun book comes out,.....I liked to reads it   _____________________________________________________HF&RV

Hi Les,   I love your humour!   Here's the site where you can read about the book. http://www.brindleandglass.com/books/standingtogether.htm Most of the women aren't writers.  There were only 3 of us who were and not a word of mine was edited.  That would be great if you can order copies.  The ISBN numbers are: ISBN 10:  I-897142-II-0 and ISBN 13:  9-781897-142II0.  Don't know why there are two.  It's in a second printing.  Where do you live?  I'll have to tell Linda.  The project was originated by Alberta's Minister of Children's Services and Jan Reimer who is former mayor of Edmonton and now with the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters.  It is a book of hope and survival and has touched many people and hopefully will make a difference.  That's why I write---to make a difference.  Alberta has the highest rate of domestic violence in all of Canada.  Too much money here, and not enough love as my mother would say.     And yes, I'll see if Jan is aware of these other websites who might want copies.  Thanks for  your help Les.   Sandy, St. Willibrord's website brought back memories ...of being dragged to confession at the beginning of each month and running out of sins to say so making them up.  I mean how bad can a 7 or 8 year old be?  Being forced to go to church first Friday of the month.  The church my family attended was the Lithuanian one across the aqueduct and so between my Sunday's and Friday's,  and then those daily folk masses in the VCHS auditorium, I just don't go to church any more.  And those nuns look familiar.
