Internet Banking Scams

Hi everybody: This morning when I checked my emails I noticed one from saying that my accounts had been accessed by an unauthorized third party. And it goes on to tell me to follow instructions etc.First of all, never heard of this bank, and I deleted the email. I am wondering if anyone else has received the same email as I just did? Would be interested in knowing....Dianne

House Prices 1959

Came across this gem of information. The photo and clipping is from 1957.
I borrowed $90 from my brother-in-law to make the down payment on a house in Chateauguay. The deal was, you paid $50 per month for 3 years, after which time you would move into a new house. Where we were renting in Ville Emard, our landlord advised us he wanted our flat for his daughter who was getting married in 1959. Fortunately we were able to accelerate our new home purchase a year ahead and it was still $10, 950!!!
Lived there until 1977, moved to Mississauga as part of the "exodus"......... The house sold for
$27, 000. The Mississauga house was $54,000!!
Looking back we always wonder how we ever did it!

LaSalle Rd/ Verdun Model School 1948-49

Here's a picture of Miss Martin's Grade 7 class of 1948-49 at LaSalle Road/Verdun Model School. Parents talk today of numbers of students per class!!! This class had 39 boys! AND, Miss Martin was extremely capable of handling all of them. She was one teacher everyone respected, and in retrospect, loved! Anyone who went there should have a good time trying to remember all the names. I haven't been able to tag them all, but I will supply what I can remember in a later posting. Incidentally, I'm the little guy front row far right.

message replies

I have the same problem. If I "reply" to a message, it does not show up for 2 days. BUT. Most of the time it does not show up at all. So I reply by going to Verdun Connections and sending a message. One of the things that must be done, or the message will be rejected. I have to make sure there is something typed into the "subject" portion. Winston Allison

Saturday movies-cans of soup

Just for the record. Dave mentioned going to the movies on a Saturday with someone named Winston. They would bring cans of soup, sit up in the balcony and pretend they were throwing up, which would cause some concern to those people below. WELL...........that Winston was not me. I had better things to do not to get in trouble(YA RIGHT). Thanks Winston Allison

born in 1986?.

Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list
to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's
incoming freshmen. Here's this year's list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were
born in 1986. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing
up.
쨌 Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
쨌 Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.
쨌 The CD was introduced the year they were born.
쨌 They have always had an answering machine.
쨌 They have always had cable.
쨌 They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
쨌 Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
쨌 Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
쨌 They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
쨌 They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
쨌 They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
쨌 They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel",
or "de plane, Boss, de plane".
쨌 They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.
쨌 McDonald's never came in styrofoam containers.
쨌 They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

family history

I am looking for information about my parents (George Luker and Janet (Jane) Cunningham) in their school days. If there is anyone who knows them from their school days that is still alive I would appreciate hearing from you.

F/O John Neal, Missing in Action

John,
I found your picture in the Verdun Guardian dated May 11th 1944 at the Soci챕t챕 d'Histoire et de G챕n챕alogie de Verdun which I have enclosed. I had to take a picture with my digital camera as the newspapers are in a large binder which could not be put on the scanner and that why the picture is fuzzy. If you live in Verdun, I invite you to come and view the newspaper, I will be there next saturday afternoon. Please let me know if you can come. If you are from out of town, I will try and improve on the picture. I also found in the Verdun Directory, your old address listed as follows:
" Neal, William, clerk, 99 fifth ave." I will relay it to you later.
There may be another picture at a later date when you where found and I will check it out, advise me the date.

New Pictures :)

Can you believe this!! I called Walmart and asked what are your specials...she said $8.78 for over $200 worth of photos. So I booked and went yesterday.

I came out of there $170.00 lighter!!!!!!!!!!!! CRAZY, however, these pictures are the best i've had in a long while. And the first of my son since he was born.

And I've got a HUGE family. Next time though if they want a picture they can give me the money and I will copy lol!

D>B>Cooper

Les_F. Some years back, some young kid found some wet bills down by the Columbia River. Those bills were from the D.B. Cooper loot. That place was not to far from where we live. Still have not found him, or any more of the money. With those paper routes I managed to have enough spending more to at least be able to do some things that my mother could not afford for me to do.  I always had money, and never had to ask anyone for any.  Also as a young teenager, we would rent a summer cottage up in the Larentians, and I would pay for half the costs. Winston Allison

Gazette

Someone on this site said they had my old Gazette route. I delivered on 5th Avenue in the morning, and actually picked up my papers at Brophy's Furniture store between 5th and 6th on Verdun. I also delivered the Star on the same route after school. On Thursday, I would deliver the Guardian on 2nd Avenue at lunch time. Anyone else pick their papers up at Brophy's? I know some of the kids I hung around with who had a Gazete route picked their papers up at the Legion on Verdun. Winston Allison

Mr. Hebb - Principal at Riverview

Dear Verdunites and Riverview Alumni:

Just in case there are new members who may have missed my previous inquiry, or others who saw it and didn't get a chance to reply, I'm posting again.

I am trying to get any information that anyone has about Mr. Hebb, who was a principal at Riverview for several years circa the late 1920s to the 1930s. If you have to check with parents and grandparents it would be appreciated.

Anyone who knows anything about Mr. Hebb while he was at Riverview or is, or knows, someone who was a student during the Hebb years can contact me at:

bfantie@american.edu

I'm also looking for anyone who has access to records from the school during the same period that might tell us anything about Hebb while he was there.. My Mom still lives in Verdun, so I can visit and collect information from anyone who can help. (I went to Woodland (but don't hold that against me).

For those who are interested, the young Mr. Hebb went on to become one of the most influential psychologists-neuroscientists of the 20th century.

Thanks,

Bryan (VHS '69)

Les_F, and everyone else. It is amazing the things and activities that keep popping up on this site. The Eaton's train for instance. I have told my wife, kids, and grandkids about the train, and other stories, and you find pictures of these memorable times.  What a great site this is. We seem to share so many common things. Thanks to all of you who share your memories.  This truely is an exciting place. Winston Allison

Newspapers

Verdun had 2 newspapers as far as I can remember. One paper you had to purchase and the other was gratis or free. Who can name these newspapers?

Reggie Paine

Not the Montreal Star or Montreal Gazette

Verdun in the 40's.

I was talking with my mom (Reita Lummis) and she threw some names at me while I read some Verdun Connection messages to her. Thanks Reggie, for the unfortunate update on Bucky Hollingsworth. I also have to ask Bruce if he is a relative of Betty Brown or Joan and Judy Brown.(Judy married Tommy Phillips) Maybe Ed (Brown) knows these names? Mom talked about Jimmy and Johnny Bartlet, apparently Johnny knew the "Lucky ol son" song very well. Other names that she recalls from growing up in Verdun in the 40's are....John McGillvry (the funeral home family), Irene Matson. Margorie Rankin, Wanda Wrigley, Betty Graham, Ruth Baggot, Buddy Larocque, Sheila and Stanley Pearce, Ann Oulton, George Clifford, Cynthia Pittman, Joan Martin, Ronnie Hare and a family by the name of Gunn. If anyone else recalls these names or knows of their whereabouts, please let me know. I may not have spelled last names correctly.

Oh Canada.

Now thatVancouverhas won the chance to host the Winter Olympics in 2010,
the following are some questions people the world over have been asking.
These are actual questions posted on an International Tourism website.

Q: I have never seen it warm in Canadaon tv, so how do the plants grow?
(UK)
A: We import all plants fully grown and just sit around and watch them
die.

Q: Will I be able to see Polar bears in the streets?
(USA)
A: Depends on how much you've been drinking.

Q: I want to walk from Vancouver toToronto- can I follow the railroad
tracks? (Sweden)
A: Sure, it's only four thousand miles, take lots of water.

Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes inCanada?
(Sweden)
A: So it's true what they say about Swedes huh?

Q: It is imperative that I find the names and address of places to
contact
for a stuffed beaver.
(Italy)
A: Let's not touch this one!

Q: Are there any ATM (cash) machines inCanada? Can you send me a list of
them in Edmonton,Vancouver,Toronto and Halifax?
(UK)
A: What did your last slave die of?

Q: Can you give me some info. about hippo racing inCanada?
(USA)
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe.
Ca-na-da
is that big country to the north of you.....oh forget it.

Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night inCalgary. Come naked.

Q: Which direction is North inCanada?
(USA)
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get there
and
we'll give you the rest of the directions.

Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada?
(UK)
A: Why? Just use your fingers like the rest of us.

Q: Can you send me the schedule for the Vienna Boys Choir?
(USA)
A: Aus-tr-ia is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y which
is...oh
forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Monday night in
Vancouver
and every Tuesday night inCalgary- right after the hippo races. Come
naked.

Q: Do you have perfume inCanada?
(Germany)
A: No WE don't stink!

Q: I have developed a new product that is the fountain of youth. Where
can I
sell it in Canada?
(USA)
A: Anywhere that significant numbers of Americans gather.

Q: Can you tell me regions of British Columbia where the female
population
is smaller than the male population?
(Italy)
A: Yes, gay nightclubs.

Q: Do you celebrate Thanksgiving inCanada?
(USA)
A: Only at Thanksgiving.

Q: Are there supermarkets inCanada and is milk available year round?
(Germany)
A: No we are a peaceful civilization of Vegan hunters/gatherers. Milk is
illegal.

Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Canada but I can't
remember
what it's called. It is like a big horse with horns.
(USA)
A: It's called a Moose. They are tall and very violent, eating the
brains of
anyone walking close to them. You can scare them  off by  spraying
yourself
with human urine before you go out walking.

Q: I was in Canadain 1969 on R+R and want to contact a girl I met there
in
Surrey, B.C. Can you help me?
(USA)

Smoked Meat
