Photo YMCA Gordon Street
I found this add in the DIAMOND JUBILEE 1876 - 1936 publication in our archives (SHGV) yesterday. Of course the building was demolished years ago but I have distinct recollection of this building having frequented it in the early 40s. Me and my friends would use the pool (naked) and shoot pool. I also recall the dances complete with orchestra and singer, don't forget this was the big band era. I don't think there are many members who would recall this building unless they are in my age group. Perhaps someone call tell me the year it was demolished. I think it was Les who published photos of the inside of the building a while back, if so, Les could you repost them, this time I will enter them in my computer. More pictures to come from same publication.

Wharf Behind Natatorium Detaches
A section of the wharf behind the Natatorium detached and floated down river but luckely was recuperated by the contracttor who has the contract to repair and store the wharf. As previously mentioned, there are 2 floating docks, One at the foot of Brault and the other behind the Natatorium. You will always find some fishermen on these wharfs as shown on enclosed photo. Subject from the Messager de Verdun.

THE NICKEL
back then verdun times a young verduner getting a nickel from his mom, dad
uncle was a treat, you go over to the corner store and look at the front counter
lots of candies, 2 for 1 cent lets see what can remember, j jubes, green leafs
black babies, little bags of chips for 2 cents, after the store owner gets fed up with your time picking which candy you wanted, it was handed to you in a little brown paper bag, yes 5 cents was a lot of paying power.
today a nickel can't buy a slice of bread, also soon the nickel will be made of steel
not to forget the penny this year is the last year in canada for making a the copper
penny, the usa will make there penny out of steel also.
ther cost of mining for nickel and copper is very expensive also the metal
copper and steel.
Moving Back
I had to go back east (from Calgary) for business for the last 2 months. I got to spend the last 3 weeks in Montreal. I was in Montreal because I am thinking of retiring back in Verdun in the very near future.
It has changed greatly! But I've decided to go ahead with my plan. I am now going to start home hunting.
I drove by 1076 Riverview where my Mom's folks lived for a few years. And my Dad's folk home on Woodland. The old house on Woodland looks very run down. But it still has a big lot.
Riverview looks the same.
Food was fantastic. I went to Schwartz's and bought a few briskets of smoked meat to come back to Calgary with, along with lots of other Montreal goodies!

Bannantyne School Photo 1946
This is a 1946 Photo of a Bannantyne school class and I am wondering if any VC member knows any of these girls. I know Grace Kennell as she lived next to us on Galt in front of the school. Of course this is 62 years ago but you never know.

Be Proud of Being Catholic (written by a Jewish Friend!)
"Be Proud of Being Catholic"
(Excerpts of an article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman - NOT Catholic) Submitted by Dee Lynd
Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic Church?
Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to your Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. Your graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%, all at a cost to you. To the rest of the Americans it's free.
The Church has 230 colleges and universities in theU.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students.
The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people - not just Catholics - in theUnited States today.
But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage.
Let me give you some figures that you as Catholics should know and remember. For example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in a study by theUnited Methodist Church , 41.8 % of clergywomen reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed. Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia. This is not a Catholic Problem.
A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR the church has been receiving.
The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably been totally weeded out by now.
Walk with your shoulders high and you head higher. Be a proud member of the most important non-governmental agency in theUnited States . Then remember what Jeremiah said: 'Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls'. Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions. Be proud that you're a Catholic.

John Sherry
Ran into John Sherry this morning in Brampton. John is married to Linda Babb and they have 5 children. They all seem to be doing very well.
I haven't seen John in 40 years, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Old 1910 Photo - Verdun
Here is an old 1910 family photo of a garage wich was situated on Malarky street, now Lasalle boul. at the corner of Rushbrooke wich I got from our archives (SHGV) wich I thought might interest V.C. members. This photo was donated by one of our members. Although we appreciate receiving these old family photos, it is unfortunate that they were not kept in the family to perpetuate their memory.
