GARY8403
Looking tor friends that lived on 2 nd avenue during the period 1950 and 1965.
Hi Bill, I was 6 in 50 and just starting at St. Willibrord's . Lived at 840 below Bannantyne. Played hockey at the Willibrord rink. Remember the great softball games?
Gary. You lived just behibd us. We lived at 835 3rd avenue. Maybe you knew my brother Hartland (Bumpy). he was 5 in 1950, and I was 10. Winston Allison
WELL ITS'S HARD TO GET CLOSER THAN THAT! I THINK I REMEMBER BUMPY'S NAME. WHAT SCHOOL DID HE/YOU ATTEND? WE LIVE IN EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA NEAR THE COAST TODAY HAVING ARRIVED HERE IN A ROUND ABOUT WAY... VERUN>NDG.ALL OVER THE WEST ISLAND>VANCOUVER>TORONTO>EUROPE>INDIANAPOLIS> NEW JERSEY AND FINALLY THE ALBERMARLE SOUND. COULD I IMAGINE THIS WOULD HAPPEN WHEN I WAS PLAYING ON MY BACK GALLERY WEARING A RADISSON HAT?
Gary. Both Bumpy and I went to Bannantyne School. But we did play at Willibrod Park year round. And yes the baseball games were great. I left Verdun in 1960, and went into The United States Marine Corps. Before that I worked at The Canadian/Montreal Stock exchanged. I returned there after my discharge. I then left and returned back to the USA in 1972. We live in Vancouver, Washington.
Gary. Sorry to say, but my brother Bumpy passed away in 1995, from a heart attack. He was living in Calgary at the time. I went thru USMC boot camp in Parris Island, S.C., then was staioned at Camp Lejuene, in N.C. for about 13 motns, before going to The Philippines for 2 years.
Winston, Sorry to learn that your brother passed away. Well you have also had some exposure to the South. My son is a Fort Knox graduate... first time as a Scout and the second time as an officer ... tank commander in the National Guard. Spent a year in Iraq and is a Captain with AirTran on the 737-700 living in Dallas.
Have a daughter in University in Washington, DC and another daughter in medicine in Burlington Vermont. Have only 3 cousins left in Canada... Edmonton and two in Victoria BC. We had a rock & Roll band in Verdun called the Corvettes in the early 60's. Rgds Gary
Hi Gary, You mentioned the band called the Corvettes, my husband Ron Hewitt played guitar for them from 60 -62, but he doesn't remember your name. They disbanded the band at the end of 62 because they were all graduating in 63. When did you play for them? Harriett
It would have been around the same time. Jimmy Guy played the accordion, Barry Cullen, lead guitar, Brian Melrose rythym guitar and I played the drums. We played at sock hops around Verdun and Montreal. Was there another group by the same name?
Hi Harriett; I'm trying to figure out if I know you, the name is so familiar. Does you husband Ron have a brother Mike? And did Ron race outboards? If so, so did my husband Wayne Stewart.
Hi Gary, Took me awhile to find this thread again. Ron remembers playing with Brians new guitar that his parents bought him for 1100., with would now be worth well over 20,000.00 now. . He remembers the drummers name as only Gary, but no last name. He also said that Brian got the new guitar back in 58/59. Maybe that was before you joined.? Played at St Thomas More Church and many other places........ I have seen pics of the group with Ron in it,but couldn't for the life of me figure out where I saw them.Anyway have a great day. Harriett.
Correct. I was one of the founding members of the group, organized the Corvettes insignia and jacket patches. We had green plaid jackets, olive slacks, white shirts and black ties. I lived on second avenue below Bannantyne and Brian on the corner of second and Verdun avenue opposite Gail Rankin over an old folks home.
I remember the day Brian got that guitar, I believe a white Fender, and we were very excited about how the group was progressing. Actually Brian taught me rhythm guitar, and I had played the B flat bugle in the St.Willibrord's cadet band so we would occasionally switch instruments where Jimmy would play drums, and I would play the trumpet or guitar. Nothing special very basic but a lot of fun. I'm looking for pictures in old boxes and will get back to you. I have an 8mm video from those days in the 50's.
Hi Gary, I'm new to the site and have been browsing through all the blogs. Noticed you mentioned Gail Rankin...I went to school with her at Bannantyne School. My name's Diane Roberts 676 Third Avenue and I also went to Verdun High. Verdun years were 1944-1963 and a few of my friends on Third Ave were Billy Rodgers, Margaret Whitton, David Wattie, Marilyn Gourley, Gail Page, etc etc.l

I meant Bumpy. Have you been able to make contact with any others from 2nd, 3rd or close by avenues?
