THANKS for stopping by, I do my best to acknowledge when someone leaves a comment, you do not have to be a member here & everyone is welcome.
Ps: This site is monitored but not actively posting on a regular basis. Mostly these are stories & some photos saved from a defunct site known as Verdun Connections which was on MSN Groups initially then on a social network called Multiply.
hi Multi, Thanks for the pictures. They are so good that I copied a few as reference material for a painting. I hope you don't mind. I found a picture of me when I was 1 1/2 sitting by the beach there where we went swimming many years ago. You have sooo many interesting pictures that I hope you keep posting them. Phyllis
Phyllis, You are more than welcome. I am very pleased to hear that you are planning to paint some. I will continue to take and post photos as I have had a few responses such as yours. M.P.U.
Steve, I don't mind the least bit. I am very pleased that other members such as your self enjoy and want to see my pics.....more to come, promise. Ralph, mpu
I just upgraded my storage capacity to 30 megs, so watch out.........I have to leave for a while, but when I come back later this evening, photos of Cornwall, and a couple of Verdun Parks..............................until later......m.p.u.
Popdog, no I have not tried Billy k's. I went there one evening a couple of months ago, and they were closing early because business was slow that evening!!! Last night we ate at Panda's chinese food restaurant on second ave, I think, it was the 2nd time we ate there.....quite good. I paid 107.9 for gas there, a little better than 115.4 in Longueuil today. m.p.u.
MPU I love your photos of the market and playground. You have a good eye for composition. I especially love the way you captured the piled peppers and the baskets. The colours are so vivid! And the empty swings say a lot. Thanks for the tour. Dolly
I will regret being up this late......my radio comes on at 4:30am ....but I am having a great time here.......I almost forgot the bologny, kraft dinner, corn, and the ''famous'' ''Verdun Cinnections'' plate.......also, the unending butter vs margarine debate....... ..........do I have spare time on my hands or what ????? m.p.u.
MPU Spare time......what's that? Anyhow we're just glad that you stayed up late to indulge us. My favourite pic.....the one with the single swing....the kind where you can't hold a beer or ice cream on..cause you need both hands, lol. Thanks. Cheers.
Yes, MPU, you are having much too much fun and are keeping me up too. I will regret it too cause I get up an hour after you. Love the Andy Wharhol composition of Kraft Dinners. Used to live on those boxes when I first left home. Only 25 cents then. It's what now? --- $1. something. Okay, I'm really going to bed and so should you. Glad I'm off Friday! Good night! Dolly
just to let you all know there is a LIONS Convention on in Cornwall starting this fri. It will be held at the Westin and I wil be there on Sat Roy Molyneux
As these photos of the old Elmhurst Dairy buildings show, the three ''famous'' bovines have definitely been sent out to pasture, so to speak...................................................... .........oh well, as the saying goes, no use crying over spilled milk............................................................................................................................m.p.u.
MPU You had my heart aquivering.....Elmhurst......cows......but was not to be. I just can't believe nobody (in the company) knows what happened to those cows! But thanks just the same. Cheers.
Thursday, I started by following Second Avenues trek.......... ...then went down to the river..... ....then up to Verdun........ ...then up to Bannantyne..... ...then Champlain just past Stephens.... ........then home..........I have a lot of pics I took at the Front of the Douglas last year. Will re-post them soon........................m.p.u.
Thank You Steve.............my pleasure. On another note, I will probably be going to visit my sister & her husband at their new place in Nepean sometime this summer as my wife will be out of the country for a couple of months. Maybe we can get together for a drink at some place. It would be nice to meet another member of this group. So far, I have only met Guy. I am sure I could find a few interesting spots to photograph in Ottawa. m.p.u.
Hi Ralph, Love the pics, thanks so much. Any chance that you can get a few shots of Cornwall? My last time in Cornwall was 1989. I'm certain that it has changed a lot since then.
Hi Fresco, check the post #19 in this discussuion...there are some pics I took Tuesday evening in Cornwall. I will check for other Cornwall pics and post them soon. My wifw will probably not be back in Cornwall for quite some time as she will be on other duties, but I will probably return in my travels.....................m.p.u.
Fresco, here are some shots I took in Cornwall last year......... .....last year gas was up to 1.26.5 per litre, while in MTL it was about 1.35 so today price here of 119.4 is not the highest that we have experienced. I find Cornwall to be a very pretty, and very clean city. I enjoy very much my visits there. The following two pics are one that I took of an engine which is on display at the tourist centre...it was taken at night so I apologize for it being so dark, and the same engine when it was still in use.....I don't remember which member posted this pic, it was not originally taken by me........ ....anyway, thanks for your positive feedback, and more photos will come, that is a promise.....m.p.u.
Thanks Ralph. Great shots of Cornwall. Is CJSS Radio still on the air in Cornwall? Can you still see any of the streetcar tracks in the Cornwall streets? The Cornwall streetcar ran everywhere & those little electric engines pulled freight cars along the trolley track routes long after the streetcars had stopped running. Most of the streetcars were replaced by trolley busses which have now been replaced by diesel busses.
Fresco, no I have not seen any old tracks, and I have explored Cornwall quite extensively. The bussess are definitely the standard, ho-hum diesels that you see everywhere. I have not thought of clicking any of them. I will next time I am there. As far as the radio, I never change the station when I leave Montreal because both stations that I listen to have perfection reception even there. These would be CHOM 97.7 or CFQR 92.5 mpu
Hey MPU, Thanks for the pictures of the Lasalle Rapids and Verdun, sure does bring back memories of the boating fun we had on the river in the 40's. Late April and the old row boat we owned was launched and we rowed over to Nun's Island for the weekend!!! Like a weekend in the wilds for us kids in those days. Victah
..and Remember 'Rock Island' ,........one of our members Mike or Gerry Jones (I think it was) posted some pics in the photo album of them as kids over on the island,....That was a neat spot too,....as you could swim on the one side of the Island as the current was swept around and gave you just enough room to fool around,.....but don't try that on upriver side,......that River sure moved along at a fair clip,a good trivk was to offer to split the rowing ,your friend would row over to Rock Island ,.and you would row back,....well the rowing is a little easier coming back on the angle back to the Verdun side have fun& remember Verdun
Betty, thank you so very much for your comments. No, I have never taken a photography course, it is just something I just enjoy doing, and am happy to be able to post some pics here, and to know that other members appreciate seeing them. I will be heading to Hawkesbury later, but it is raining too much to take any pictures. I still 'owe' some pics of the Grenville area that I promised to Fresco or someone else last year. Take Care, Ralph.
Ralph, I'm in Montreal West Station...at least I wish I was. I can remember taking the train from Montreal West Station to Windsor Station for ten cents in the nineteen fifties. If the Boston & Maine, the New York Central or Delaware & Hudson train let you ride they would not collect the CPR ticket. Fun in the fifties was to take the streetcar to Montreal West, walk down to Elmhurst Dairy for an ice cream cone & then take a ten cent ride on the CPR train.
Fresco, I am glad I could help you re-live this moment......sounds like it was special.....Ralph........ ....CPR was a part of my life from 1972 to 1998.
Hi Ralph MPU,.....I used to go to the Watch the ships go through the canal,....and there was an observation tower ( I thought it was across the Champlain Bridge,.....but it may have been from where you went ,neatr the Victoria Bridge,........it used to cost .10 cents to go up and sit in the observation tower,....(cheap even by those standards of the day (late60's early 70)............ Thanks for posting those pics,.....the quality of todays camera's is fantastic,....but you also have to have a little 'insight' to be able to 'see' the finished product,.....and You do seem to have that,.....Thanks Again HF&RV
Hi MPU No the photos of the Nat are not boring...spent lots of summers there like most kids in Verdun, and the boardwalk was always my favorite place especially on a hot summer night. The pool looks like it's just waiting for some water and kids to splash around in it. Sigh! Always fun there. Dolly
MPU that's hilarious LeLoft..........hahahahaha where do you live,...oh I live in Lowney's LeLoft...........hahahaha Gives new meaning to "Home Sweet Home" hahahahahahaha I have agree with the not very impressive category MPU,...... Those Lofts are so Sweet ,it's sickening,..........hahahaha HF&RV
MPU Thanks.....but I want to pound you on the head right about now (just kidding). Those Lowney signs ... even the color and all, have me drooling all over my keyboard. Cherry Blossoms were absolutely my fave as a kid (long, long time ago). I can remember they were 10 cents each, when other chocolate bars were only 5 cents each. When times were tough, and I didn't have enough spending money for a Cherry Blossom, there were Crispy Crunchs that would substitute!!!! Thanks, but gosh darn you. Cheers.
After visiting the cemetary headed down Mount Royal towards Park avenue and stopped at an observation deck and took pictures looking east...this is not the lookout where the chalet is. I have pics of this that I posted last year...anyway this morning it looked like this........ ....................m.p.u.
You would laugh, but here in Comox they're having a protest march. Against what you may ask......ready for it........against the city allowing 4-storey apartment buildings. I think they just recently allowed 3-storey buildings in Courtenay, and not to be outdone Comox wants a 4-storey building. This is prime location, right on the ocean, and they can charge many dineros, so bigger is better by their thinking. Both of these towns are about 5 minutes apart and are constantly trying to out-do each other. So I think they would have a bird (probably a seagull) if they could see what sort of buildings make up Montreal. Didn't Montreal have a STOL airport close to downtown? Is it still there/used? Thanks MPU.
Linda, In Montreal I don't think any developer would even consider a four storey building, probably use the excuse a ''waste of land'' considering how many floors could be added.....anyway regarding Comox, I don't know if I ever mentioned it but I have been to BC only once, in January 1986 to visit my sister & her husband in Comox. He was stationed there in the army. I remember it as being very nice, we went to an excellent Chinese Food Restaurant, and other things I am sure but this was twenty years ago, so my mind is blank. While we were there we had a light dusting of snow, just to make us feel at home I guess. m.p.u.
Linda, I forgot to respond to your inquiry about the STOL airport. No, this was replaced quite a few years ago by a VIA train garage, and now there are several other businesses along the Bonaventure expressway. This could be an idea for more pics.
MPU Unfortunately my other half doesn't really love chocolate, doesn't even LIKE chocolate, otherwise you can probably guess what I would have as my screen saver....yup....the big, beautiful cherry blossom, why even the box is beautiful! I gandered through the site you posted (thanks), but for my liking I guess the lofts look too sterile. I just can't imagine my poochie flinging her toys all over the place; or having 'dog blankets' on the furniture. They're not to keep the sofa in good repair, rather she loves to make them up to her liking, and snuggle up for snoozies, lol. Instead of lol (laughing out loud), I find myself sq (smiling quietly) so I don't disturb the other person who lives here (my other half) from watching his movie. I wonder what happened with the STOL's...weren't they working out? At the time I thought they'd be a real boon to the business commuters, what with arriving almost right downtown. Does anyone know how long they lasted? Cheers.
Thanks for posting the magnificent photo's. Enjoyed them very much, do you ever get to Verdun? It would be nice to see a few pictures of Wellington Street, and St. Willibrords Church, Rex's Pizza, and The hot dog place on the corner of first and Wellington La Belle Province is the name. Sharron

Sharron, I go through Verdun at least once a week, just for old times sake now. My Dad lived there until his passing away in February. I have taken many pics and will post more of the places you mentioned...La Belle Province on Wellington and Woodland Restaurant are ''regular'' stops. So are Tim Hortons on Church or Dunkin Donuts on Wellington. m.p.u.
Les, I know of a psychologist in our DM clinic who firmly believes in this expression "Everything is Relative", and has given a lot of help to a lot of people (at $90 per hour).
Tonight took my better half to the airport to fly to TO. Did anyone else as a kid go to Dorval and go out onto the observation deck to watch the planes? we could almost touch them....well things have changed and there is only one spot to see a bit of activity, and here it is......... ....not what it used to be.....m.p.u.
The following pictures of Gordon Avenue between Wellington & Verdun are for a very special friend........ ............hope they brought back good memories. m.p.u.
Interesting pics MPU ,.I walked up that very block an awful lot of times,......and one of my friends growing up lived in the middle of thr block(on the east side of Gordon),.......one of the pics you posted in the laneway looks like it's fairly close to the old garage ,that we managed to take the window out on a few occasions while playing baseball in the backyard: Also closer to Wellington there was a large chestnut tree,...where we would get those green throny shells,.and use them as our 'surprise' handshake tricks,......this was when we didn't have the money to buy the proper silver windup handshake zapper, from the old Trick & Johe Shop on Wellington ( Remember where the 'stink bombs ' were sold,..and the fake everything stuff,........dog turds,....puke,....etc etc,.....) However back to Gordon Ave ,.....Thanks for posting those pics,...... ................................................................................................hf&rv
....then off to Smith Falls to visit the Hershey factory & store....... ....some beautiful horses along the way..... ....then the store...you can smell chocolate even before you open the door...... ....no pictures inside the factory, but these were taken of the loot that I bought...................then back to Kingston....m.p.u.
MPU Looks like you got a bit of something for everyone. When we lived in Ottawa we used to do the tour that you did, but on our Yamaha 1100. It really is beautiful countryside, especially so on a motorcycle. BTW, what is the "chocolate bar" sort of thing that looks like to contains Cherry Blossoms. Haven't seen a package like that yet. In my opinion, ya need to get your fix with a real boxed cherry blossom......not an imposter!!!! I just figured out why I love your pics so much.....they're like "eye candy"....they help us souls who don't get back there, to get our fix. Thanks. Cheers.
Linda, that is a 4 pack of Cherry Blossoms, and I ate one on Monday, and one tonight............I am trying to pace myself..............m.p.u.......... ....I can imagine how great this area would be to tour on a bike.....I will have one again someday(but that is another story for another time)
What do I do now..........................? I upgrade to 30 megs just a few weeks ago, and have now reached 29.4 of these 30. I only have 764 photos in my album......I can't stop now...............summer is just starting. m.p.u.
Time to make use of an online photo album. I have one at Yahoo.com (free version)You can fill it up and just post a link here at VC so we can all enjoy your work.
Hi Ralph, There is a magazine called Soda Pop Dreams published by Blair Matthews from Huntsville, Ontario. The Spring 2006 issue has a great story about The Cornwall Bottling Works which was in business from 1890 until 1968. Their best selling beverage was a soda called Stubby which came in 5 delicious flavors. A ZIP in every SIP. In 1927 Coca-Cola approached The Cornwall Bottling Works to bottle Coke. Cornwall Bottling didn't think Coca-Cola would sell. Not too long after Coca-Cola's offer Pepsi-Cola tried to get Cornwall Bottling as a franchiser and they were also turned down. Cornwall Bottling folded in 1968 but it seems that Stubby bottles and Stubby metal advertising signs are very popular items at yard sales in Cornwall. The article also says that Stubby had other Canadian franchises. The most Eastern was in Montreal & the most Western was Pintcon, British Columbia. Despite what the article says I never remember seeing Stubby Soad in Montreal. With summer coming up I hope on your next Cornwall "Walk With Me" you'll spot a yard sale with a Stubby bottle or sign for sale
Walter, I will definitely check this out, and will mention also to a friend who lives in this area. There are small bottles of soft drinks available in Deux Montagnes, I think the name is Stubby, will check that today. The website for this magazine has a story about Pop Shoppe, which were very popular in Montreal in the mid 70s but did not last long. When I was in Merrickville Ontario a couple of weeks ago I saw a store that had a Pop Shoppe sign in the window, but I did not check it out. Ralph.
As I drove thru Verdun at lunchtime, I took a few more hydrant pictures........I have heard that the blue ones belong to the STM.....this one on Wiilibrord...this standpipe outside Verdun Metro Station.......... ...this one on LaVerendrye in Ville Emard ? or Cote St. Paul ? outside a STM garage.......... .....or this one on corner of Willibrord & Champlain...... ....or this one in front of City Hall....apparently the one I caught a few days ago, is in front of a Hairdresser Salon...........a friend of mine however, claims that these blue ones belong to the city, and are reserved for water tank trucks only, not firetrucks....one of us is right.............m.p.u.
And in response to the reference to MonMart on the NE corner of LaVerendrye and Shevchenko, it is now occupied by Quebecor World Lasalle, a printing company........... ....and Steinbergs & Miracle Mart, are now Metro, and a mall including a big cinema and som boutiques....... ............and further along Champlain the Woolco became Walmart, then IGA ...and a couple of other stores...m.p.u.
Ralph: Thanks for all the wonderful pictures, they bring back many wonderful memories of fishing with my dad in the Rideau Canal back in the 50's. The scenery is beautiful, also nice to see the Parliament buildings, and the old Mom Mart.....Dianne
JM; No, you know me and my one track mind. My main interest in Ottawa was to visit the Museum of Science & Technology, where I took all the steam engine and train photos. Oh, and of course to visit my Sister & her husband also, almost forgot about them....(just kidding Sis in case you read this). I also visited an excellent store in Merricksville, Ontario where they sell only model trains..... www.larkspurline-trains.com .....I thought I was in ''train heaven'' Ralph.
Thanks for the great memories. I remember taking the "112" bus to Miracle Mart, which was like Woolco & Woolco was in the next parking lot. Steinbergs was connected to the Miracle Mart. In the mall area there was a black & white photo booth, I think it cost 25 cents? I still have a picture of myself at age 12 with my sister in that very booth! Have a great day! Clarole,(Clc)
Well I would have to say that,........there was never anything nice about the smell of this place ,...........and I'm referring to the late 60's but more like the early 70's the Post Cereal plant ,..............or whatever it was called,.............
Just returned home from our favourite Karaoke joint and to my dismay there is no controversy on VC tonight?!?....... Speaking of LaSalle and aromas I remember all the smells..Seagrams, Labatt's, General Foods, Purina, Monsanto and heaven knows how many other chemical plants all spewing at the same time.....and we worry about....oh never mind lets not go there again......Dianne
I was wondering the same thing......I guess everybody is out enjoying the weekend...here in Nova Scotia it is raining again and I'm glad to stay in doors...Dianne
Hi Dianne, yesterday was a cold rainy day in Deux-Montagnes. Today is sunny, not too hot, perfect for cutting grass....yuk, but someone has to do it. I wish I could make a trip in the near future to Nova Scotia, but not this year. I used to go there a lot as a kid as my Mom's sister lived in Sydney. The last time I was there was 1975, and did the full tour for my new girlfriend (now my wife) of Cabot Trail, Louisburg, Sydney, Baddeck, etc, etc, camped a few nights in Kejimkujik Park as my wife's brother was working there for the summer. I love the Maritimes, although I have never been to PEI, but I am sure it would be very nice. Ralph.
I just realized where everybody must be http://www.festivalmondialbiere.qc.ca/ at the World Beer Festival in Windsor Station. This makes sense as a location, since during the 25+ years I worked for CPR in Windsor Station, I would say that I saw a bigger concentration of alcoholics than I have ever seen anywhere else. There must be a lot of ghosts / spirits (pun intended) attending this event. Ralph.
Ralph: You'll have to plan a trip to Nova Scotia...Halifax is a beautiful city, lots to see and do, even on a rainy day. There are many festivals, just about every town has something going on during the summer and of course if you like seafood, this is the place to be......will be having steamed mussels tonight, usually steam them on the barbecue but not today if it is still raining later on. And the grass is growing here too....Yuck....Dianne
Glad you took that picture of the old Dominion Store at 3ed & Wellington,...because a few years ago I posted a picture, from a museum site ,.that claimed this building as being at Willibrord & Bannantyne, (kungfu & I both said noway,.this was 3rd & Wellington long before it was a Dominion Store,...... but looking at the architecture,..and the fact that there are Streetcar tracks in the photo,.(Bannantyne never had tracks,..certainly not at Willibrord),but check the comparison: Thanks for the comparison shot MPU,......now if we could get them to correct it in the Museum,............hahahahaha and the house on Lasalle Blvd is exactly the one I was thinking about (swimming pool??) so it is Lacharite (I kinda thought that)............... Thanks Again for stopping and taking those pictures,.......... Have Fun and Remember Verdun
Now I see it was the McCord Museum,.....I wonder if they have ever corrected it? .................in any case it's good to know that we know Our Verdun ..............hahahaha HF&RV
On my way to Ottawa to watch grandson in hockey tournament, but yes Les that is definately across from Grovers south east side of Wellington Street , used to be a car dealership if I remember, and repairs were done on 2 nd floor Jimmy
ok, whoever the big one is!!! as for charles alepin,s home in verdun on lasalle, there is no pool, my grand father worked for him, maintained the home, in the fifties after retiring from CNR. but, after those years, who knows what went in to the design of this historical home. thanks for all the photos and memorabilia. i am trying to put some photos taken recently in bahamas as queen mary 2 docked off shore there for a day, in front of old holiday inn, now lucayan resort. copy paste does not work. any ideas from the pros.?? nice weekend everyone, carolyn bennett
Carolyn, I am not a pro, and have never been able to copy and paste a photo into Verdun Connections. I have an album with over 700 pictures called Ralphie's Pics, I always have to upload my photos from my hard drive, , and then import them into the message that I am writing. I have only been to the Bahamas once, to the Grand Bahama Hotel, west of Freeport on our Honeymoon in May 1976, and went to Freeport only once to shop and go to the casino. I remember it as having been a very beautiful place. I would love to visit again, maybe this time Nassau.......Ralph aka M.P.U.
Today, I will try a place I have heard mentioned at work, on CHOM, on VC, have paased by there every time I went to Cornwall, but have never been, but today is THE DAY.......... m.p.u...................maybe get in a few clicks along the way...
I do know if this went to right message fro Les f, but the dealer at Third & Wellongton was York Automobile , selling Chrysler, Plymouths, and Fargo truck, and was also an Imperial Oil dealer. Gordo
I seem to remember a house on LaSalle in the first few blocks after Fayolle that had a swimming pool and supposedly belonged to Omer Barre owner of the car delership. Ed
Sunday, gave in and bought a new scanner, just couldn't live without one..........after having gone thru the last boxes of my Dad's junk, came across a few things I'd like to share. I only had time to scan this picture last night, but msn was so slow, I could not post it.......I don't know where my Dad got this photo, but it is interesting....m.p.u.

MPU, Thanks for the walk. I enjoyed it. I dunked my feet in the water and it was ice cold like I remember it.! Ha! Dolly
hi Multi, Thanks for the pictures. They are so good that I copied a few as reference material for a painting. I hope you don't mind. I found a picture of me when I was 1 1/2 sitting by the beach there where we went swimming many years ago. You have sooo many interesting pictures that I hope you keep posting them. Phyllis

Popdog, no I have not tried Billy k's. I went there one evening a couple of months ago, and they were closing early because business was slow that evening!!! Last night we ate at Panda's chinese food restaurant on second ave, I think, it was the 2nd time we ate there.....quite good. I paid 107.9 for gas there, a little better than 115.4 in Longueuil today. m.p.u.
As Sandy mentioned earlier......... these pics were taken in Jean Talon Market last fall........ ...m.p.u.
In all fairness, I must not ignore the Atwater Market visit last fall........ ........m.p.u.

MPU I love your photos of the market and playground. You have a good eye for composition. I especially love the way you captured the piled peppers and the baskets. The colours are so vivid! And the empty swings say a lot. Thanks for the tour. Dolly

Good night! Dolly

Ralph no problem if I'm still around. Steve

Thanks Betty. It's great to hear that CJSS Cornwall is still going strong.
Dolly
Dow brewery & Lowney building being transformed into lofts...this was mentioned a couple of weeks ago....... ...not very impressive yet......m.p.u.
Cheers.
Drove by Emile's this morning but at 9:30 it was too early for spruce beer....too early for THEM NOT for me.... ....maybe another time....m.p.u.
A little downtown ''tour'' this morning...... .......very quite Saturday morning...m.p.u.
Linda.......................not th real thing but...... ...check this site http://www.leloft2.com/
Enjoyed them very much, do you
ever get to Verdun? It would be nice to see a few pictures of Wellington
Street, and St. Willibrords Church, Rex's Pizza, and The hot dog place on
the corner of first and Wellington La Belle Province is the name.

Thanks Maggie, I will check that out. Ralph.
Hello Ralph ! Thanks for your impressive collections of wonderful photos. Did you have the opportunity to try OC Transpo 4372 ? JM

Where is everybody???????????????????

Now I see it was the McCord Museum,.....I wonder if they have ever corrected it? .................in any case it's good to know that we know Our Verdun ..............hahahaha HF&RV

ok, whoever the big one is!!! as for charles alepin,s home in verdun on lasalle, there is no pool, my grand father worked for him, maintained the home, in the fifties after retiring from CNR. but, after those years, who knows what went in to the design of this historical home. thanks for all the photos and memorabilia. i am trying to put some photos taken recently in bahamas as queen mary 2 docked off shore there for a day, in front of old holiday inn, now lucayan resort. copy paste does not work. any ideas from the pros.?? nice weekend everyone, carolyn bennett
