Let's Play a Little Game...
Called name that Verdun street or particular place in Verdun! I took a bunch of pics around Verdun 2 weeks ago, let's see how many you can guess hehe
I walked down this street every...single...day on my way to school in the 60's
Awwwwww...com on now, doesn'y ANYONE want to take a guess what street that is? Do ya need a hint? Ok.... This will probably give it away haha but halfway down this street, there was a lumberyard that we kids used to walk thru and get thrown out by the owner at least twice a week hehe. It was on the left in this pic. Not sure if the lumberyard is still there, I didn't go that far up the street unfortunately... God, I hope I'm remembering this right or I've accidentally thrown everyone off LOL
Well Sharon I'll assume your on Gordon (near Bannantyne) facing the River,......and I if that is so then I Remember a lumber yard being to your right (as you take that picture,.....I used to live at 4349 Verdun Av ...btwn Rielle & Gordon,.......and played in that whole area.......the lumber yard was fun to crawl under the fence...Remember there was a large hinged flap on the bottom og the gate to keep the dog in ,......and we would lift that flap ,have a look for the dog....and if he was in a certain place,....we'd make a run for it ,then quickly climb up on the piles of wood.....and antagnozie the dog....as we made our way across the tops of te lumber piles,....to the lane at the back of the yard,.....which would lead us to the lane that ran horizontal to Verdun Av ( actually QuinnLane) one of the few lanes that had a name......I guess your talking about the Lumberyard as being on the left ,meaning walking up Gordon towards Bannantyne School..........HF&RV
Hi Sharron ! This one way seems to be oriented northward, assuming huge bldgs in the back on Lasalle Blvd (?), I would guess btwn Lasalle Blvd & Verdun Ave ? My guess: Gordon. JM
You're absolutely right, Les. I had forgotten about that dog! A German Shepherd, wasn't it? I was on that spot because I wanted to see the spot where my old elementary school, Bannantyne School stood. This is what is there now: I went snooping around the building to see if there was anything left from when I used to play in the schoolyard and lo and behold, here is the wall we used to bounce our ball off of. It was the back of the building which was (and still IS!) the body shop on Galt Ave. It's covered over with a layer of cement now but if you look close, you can see the original brick showing thru in some spots. And last but definitely not least, my most exciting find for me: I am almsot certain that this is what is left of the back school fence! I remember that fence as being green with the corner posts having that point at the top. And the foundation it's set in used to run all along the side of Gordon St. like that. I remember climbing up onto that foundation, holding onto the fence and walking along the side of the yard like that. Anyone else remember this? Do YOU think this could really be what's left of the original fence of Bannantyne School? Or is it just "wishful thinking" on my part...lol?
Okay I got carried away with myself hehe. Here's another "area" to guess... It doesnt look "quite" the way I remember it...I remember a green wooden door here"
Hi Sharron ! I think your memory serves you right ! It looks definitely like an institutionnal fence (more than a private one) I think this could really be what's left of the original fence of Bannantyne School (I passed in the area while I was student at Ecole secondaire Richard on Champlain Blvd, corner Rielle). JM
Thanks for your reply JM, I too, am pretty certain that it's the same fence. I'm not ashamed to admit that I jumped up on the foundation of it and held onto the fence and got all teary-eyed over it. My 17 year old son who was with me at the time wasn't very impressed tho....lol.
Hi SS, I just stopped in a friend of mines shop in downtown Victoria,..and had to check out the site to see what pictures ,you put up today,.............I know exactly the buildong your spesking of & I too Rememeber the Big Green Door,,.......I'll let someone else guess as to location....................Gotta Go HF&RV
Yup, you're right, JM! It's the Willibrord Park "shack" where the bathroom was and where we would change into our ice-skates in the winter or get the "Pop" to band-aid up a skinned knee. I used to live up the street on Verdun Ave. between 1st and 2nd avenue and would actually put my skates on at home and walk to the ice-rink hehe. I'd go into the shack to warm up my frozen toes tho. Remember the playground in the back? Well I was astonished and saddened when I went around back to look at it! THIS is all that remains of it now. It is ALL in the pic...just those 3 things.
Sure, JM. Willibrord Park is right behind the Verdun City Hall (which is set WAY back on Verdun Avenue along it's own little "street" but still classified as being on Verdun Avenue, if you know what I mean). The park itself runs the whole block of Willibrord to First Avenue along Bannantyne Ave.. During the summer it's a big baseball park but come winter, the boards are put up and it turns into hockey rinks (or it used to, at least) At the back of the baseball park is where that "shack" stands and has stood since 1955 I believe. just behind the shack (and in the back of the City Hall, is where the small playground itself is. The playground was much larger when I was a kid, with more green space.
Verdun City Hall brings back two memories for me, all to do with driving: --going to the licence bureau on my 17th birthday to get my drivers learners permit. --buying and selling many pieces of junk at the licence bureau for the next four years until I got married (my wife had a new car). R
Hi SS ,.....I don't ever recall any green space in that playground,......it was all ashphalt,...except for where the swings were, it had a wooden frame surrounding them and filled with dirt or sand ,......I also Remember there was a big concrete block sort of in the middle of the shack building,.....where you get onto the stilts easier,...the park also had a large chain link fence around it ,.....that we would climb to be first on the swings....(instead of going up to the entrance gate near the shack......we would make a bee-line over fromWillibrord school, ( at lunch or after school) ,....and climb the fence...just to beat anyone else to the swing.......maybe there was more grass over near the sandbox side (near 1st av) and the pavement nearer Willbrord Av side..?? but do you Remember when the monitors of the park would bring out the equipment and there was a stampede to get to the stilts,....and what ever other stuff they had...........also we used to get Free Milk ....given to us by the milkman who would generally pull up on the 1st av side of the park.....making it a little longer run to get in line ,if you were over on the 'big swings'..........hahahahaha HF&RV Baby swings.........now the 'Big Swings' don't have a clue where this park is but the swings haven't changed........Sorry about the size of that 1st picture......but you get the idea............Have Fun & Remember Verdun
The lumber yard was named W. Leduc and was situated at 675 Gordon, phone # YO 0605. As for Bannantyne school, I lived right across at 857 Galt. Sometimes the door was left open so we would enter and play in the gymnasium and we would regularly jump the fence and play in the school yard. There are other pranks we sued to do at that school but I won't mention them here. What memories. Guy
Oh my God...you have an INCREDIBLE memory hahaha!!!! I wouldn't have known the telephone number anyway, but yup now that you've said it, I know the name of the lumberyard was Leduc's...too much. And hey come onnnnnnnnn Guy! You're among fellow Verdunites, you can share those pranks you used to pull in my old elementary school! I'd love to hear it!
Yeah Les, the "green space" I remember was closer to the Willibrord St. side. Maybe because I was smaller then it seemed like more, I don't know...lol.
Hi Sharon ! CLUB KOZAK Located in the Verdun borough of the city of Montreal, Club Kozak is the first Martial Arts school to offer authentic SAMBO training in the Province of Quebec (514)362-8880 http://www.clubkozak.com/EN/ 4850, rue Wellington, Verdun, QC H4G 1X4 Tel. : 514-362-8880 (Wellington & 5th Avenue) JM
Hello Sharon! Use to be a BANK down on the bottom, upstairs use to rent out rooms at one time and if I'm not mistaken Ponitac Taxi also shared part of the bottom floor or the building next door. Or come on you old drivers could I be totally wrong with the taxi stand and that was on the corner of 4th. Have Fun and Keep Young Tiny Tina
Yup, you're right, T, it used to be the Bank of Montreal. Corner of 4th and Wellington. The Pontiac Taxi Service that you refer to tho, I believe was on the corner of Desmarchais and Wellington in the basement, no?
Thanks JM, that IS what the business is now but it's at the corner of 4TH Avenue and Wellington. I've been meaning to ask you JM...are you by any chance related to a Bob (Robert) Hachey who lives on 3rd Ave near Champlain with his lovely wife Debbie?
Hey MPT, if you look closely in that pic I posted of the playground, I believe you can see where the License Bureau used to be (not sure if it still is). It was on the ground floor in the back of City Hall, right? Do you see it?
Sharon: Yes, the licence bureau was through those doors. I don't think it is anymore though. For a few years now, "licence" transactions can be made at many Caisse Populaires, resulting in fewer government locations. I had thought that a small claims court was also in this building, but now that I think more (even though it hurts) I believe the small claims court was on the corner of Hickson & Bannantyne. Hope hurricane Dennis does not bring too much bad weather to Virginia. Ralph.......aka M.P.U.
Ok well seeing as Tina got that one so quickly, I'll make this one a wee bit more difficult hahaha... Looking at this building brought back many memories for me. The side wall that you see is much as I remember it being when I was a kid even tho the front is nothing at ALL what it used to be. What was this building in the 60's and where is it?
Les; I am puzzled by the billboards in this picture: ..the Mustang is either a 1965 or 1966, but the words on both billboards are only in French. Perhaps this picture was taken in a very unilingual area of Quebec, or perhaps not in Quebec at all, considering that English signs were still legal in QC before 1976..........mpu
Bravo, Danny! It IS what once was the Savoy Theater at the corner of Willibrord and Wellington. It is now a Uniprix pharmacy. You guys are just too good for me, man haha. What to do? Ohhhhh I know! Tell me where THIS is! heh heh heh And if you can tell me WHERE this is, maybe you will be able to tell me what used to be in that spot, because for the life of me I just can't remember!
Did you mean the fence is what's left of Bannantyne School or the last pic I posted of just a concrete slab foundation, Brian? I know the last pic pic wasn't taken in the same spot as where Bannantyne School was. I went to Bannantyne School too as a kid (1965 - 1970)and THIS is what stands on it's old spot now: (I think I posted this before...lol...I've posted so many I can't keep track. If you come to the group via the internet, there's an easy way to refer back to which particular message is being replied to, if everyone did it we could easily refer back: When you want to reply to a certain message, on the top left is a link "Reply" you can click on to open a reply box. Type out your reply and click "Send Message" on the bottom and it will send your reply to the group with a link at the top that says it's "in resonse to Message #xxx". If anyone wants to see what the reply is in reference to, they can just click on that link. Of course that only works if everyone does it tho...lol.
The third picture is definately what's left of the fence from Bannantyne school I remember that very well because I use to do the same thing, I too use to climb and walk along the fence. As for the second picture I do not recall a body shop on Galt, but I do recall a body shop on Gordon just down the street on the opposite side the school used to be on. By the way when you were in Bannantyne do you recall a teacher whose name is Miss Reeves?
This is a long shot but I think that this crumbled slab of cement is the parking lot beside St. Clement's Church on Gordon, was always a parking lot as far as I know.
Hi Maggie ! Here’s a pic of the parking behind St. Clement’s Church (in front of former CKVL, now CKOI) I think this parking lot dates back as early as the 50’s (even late 40’s). JM
Hi Sharon! Good Morning You could be right on the Taxi stand funny I can remember going down the stairs and into the office to bring Jim a donut or whatever but cannot remember the street. Come on you taxi drivers or ex-drivers give us a hand here please.
Hmmmm I don't think I remember a Miss Reeves, I have to say. The names I remember are Miss Sparrow, Miss Brayer, Miss Ruby, Mrs. Sternthal, the principal was Mr. Milley (Milly...Millie? aka "Blinky"), gym teacher was Mr. Johnson (he was from England and had that great accent). maggie McK here in the group was one of his pets hehe. Yes I think it really IS the back fence of the old school. I wish now that a "piece" of that old fence had mysteriously found it's way into my pocket now. Oh well...there's always next time. (hoping the fence is still there.) Isn't it odd that they'd keep that fence there when the school was demolished what...about 20 years ago, no? Anyone have any idea when it was? I guess of course, the fence remained to be the side fence of the flats of houses that were directly beside it, but it still amazes me.
Nope, sorry Mag, that's not where it is. The parking lot behind St. Clement's Church is MUCH bigger than that slab of cement, as you can see by the pic that JM posted.
You're absolutely right, Guy! It's the corner of Verdun and Church Aves. (de L'Eglise). Now anyone have any idea what used to stand there? I can't remember and it's driving me nuts LOL.
Ok, well seeing as Guy knew the locale and Danny knew what the business that used to be there was...it's time for another...lol. I whited out the name on the street sign sorry hehe that would have made it too easy. It's probably an easy one anyway) Where is this photo taken?
Hi Sharon ! A view of Bannantyne towards Montreal, eastward from Galt. The « Galt » sign on the right, and ... the southward oneway is a further confirmation of Galt. Thanks for the pic JM
Hahahaha Oh God I missed a sign! Good eyes JM! But yes of course, you and Danny are correct, it's Bannantyne and Galt. Sorry bubbacut, you were close! Cute Les, I guess the bottle of WhiteOut wasn't big enough since I forgot a sign haha. Ok...another one? I've checked for anything that would make it easy to reveal in this one haha...actually 2. Pretty easy for some of you tho, I bet. This building used to scare me as a kid hehehe and looks even creepier now if you ask me. I think it's been abandoned for years... This is the back... And this is the side...well, front maybe seeing as it's the only door haha but it's on the side of the building. I think.
This is the corner of Galt and Bannantyne. Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church is on the left and I lived in the building on the right before it was demolished and replaced by the present building. The Bannantyne school was on the right of the person taking the photograph. Guy
I Remember a Lowney's ice cream store at the corner of Verdun & Church av...it was on the NW corner ,....actually it was on Verdun Av,....and there was 2 concrete blocks as steps.......and the sign was just a small flat hanging sign,....saying Lowney's IceCream.............. at least that is one I recall HF&RV
Awwwww doesn't anyone wanna take a guess as to what and where that building is? hehe I posted 2 different views of it even! You McK's would be one of the first to know where it is, I'd think.....
Sharon, I have visions of you running through the streets of Verdun, taking pictures....up alley ways, deserted buildings, children's playgrounds, people's houses and wonder if the Verdunites think perhaps that the elusive Russian spy (who used to live in Verdun) has been reincarnated. Excellent photos, good for the soul of those who haven't been back in quite some time. Thanks.
Sharon; To the left of where the photograph was taken is a bar-b-q chicken restaurant,,,not bad, called Au Coq or Coq au Bec. I go there often with my dad who lives on Desmarchais. Ralph.
Hi Margaret if you are right the church is no longer at the corner of Gordon and Verdun Ave. It was torn down to make way for condos. By the way Margaret you wouldn't happen to know what was on Verdun Ave. between the Legion and The funeral parlor before the metro was built?
Brian, St. Clement's was always and still is at the corner of Gordon and Wellington. I was wrong about the picture but JMHachey has provided a great photo of my usual view of that church! (Thanks JM). I have no idea what was replaced by the metro on Verdun acroos from city hall either, that all happened after I left.
Sharon, is this the little building that we passed (between Willibrord & 1st Ave. near LaSalle blvd. beside the apartment building) to get to Parc Richard? There was a brick walled staircase with maybe 6 or 7 stairs. I'm sure glad you did this photo tour of Verdun. These pictures are almost as good as being there!
I do remember Mr. Johnston Sharon. Was it that obvious that I was a favourite? How long was he there? I only remember him being there for 1 of my Bannantyne years. Do you think any of those teachers are still around today? I wonder if I ever got taller than Miss Ruby (Mrs. Zuessman)?
The church that was demolished on the corner of Gordon & Verdun, was Verdun Baptist Church, later renamed Verdun-Lasalle Baptist Church, now located on Wellington street in an old renovated grocery store. R
Good Morning Sharon ! This old bldg still preserved at the foot of Rielle was the « Water Works Pump House » (official name on City of Verdun map of 1913): City of Verdun, Qu챕. / Chas. E. Goad Co. - 1913: http://www4.bnquebec.ca/cargeo/accueil.htm then search under « Index des toponymes » under V for Verdun. BTW, I took that shot at my last visit (June 19, 2005) in Verdun. That pic is a reduced version of the original. JM Note: I posted this message earlier with a pic (see Verdun Yesteryears No 705 ... but I can‘t find my answer yet ... on another message board !) LOL There are so many messages, it’s not always easy to keep track of them all. Have a nice day !
Yup Maggie, you're right...and JM too of course. Thanks for the info on just what that small building is, JM...I think as kids we always used to call it the "with house" or something to that effect haha. I think great Verdun minds must think alike JM, because I have MANY photos that I took when I was there that are the exact same places as you took too haha Most of yours are better tho, I have an old dinosaur of a digital camera thats taped together with duct tape LOL! We were almost there at the same time too! I got there on June 21st and left on the 29th....
Just one thing JM... The pump house, is it not more at the foot of what is between Willibrord and 1st Avenue...right beside the big apartment building?
I'm glad you like the pics everyone. I kinda just started at the boardwalk down from my sister's place on Allard (I stayed there during my visit) and just kept walking and snapping pics of places that I played as a kid. My mother moved often when I was growing up so I got to see a LOT of Verdun haha. I hated it then but now I think I'm lucky for it. In my travels taking the pics, I did get some odd stares and there was one particular gentleman who was on his balcony in the back of the building where Bannantyne School used to be. He kinda stood up out of his chair and leaned over the balcony to see what I was up to haha (I was taking a pic of that back wall we bounced our ball off of) so I felt obligated to explain why I was taking photos and snooping around his home haha. He was easily appeased and hadn't even realized that an old elementary school had even been there at one time. He also agreed that he thought that back fence was the original one from the school too. I plan on gathering up all the pics I have that I took in Verdun and making a screen saver for my computer. I'll let you all know when it's done and will email it to you if you like.
Was it that obvious that you were Mr. Johnson's pet? Let's see... "Come here Margaret, Margaret will now show you how this is done:" "Look how well Margaret does this!" "Margaret, you little Monkey!" Nahhhh wasn't obvious Hahahahahaha! Well hell you WERE good in phys. ed Maggie, what can I say? Didn't Mr. Johnson pull you up high one time when you were hanging either from the rings or the rope? I have some kind of a memory of that deep in there....lol.
Yup you're right about where that church is now, Ralph. Sorry, but it looked so ODD to me to see a church right at the corner of 3rd and Wellington in what used to be the old DOMINION grocery store! In the pic below, you can actually see the old yellow tile from when it was Dominion behind the sign for the church.. Remember the name running across the front (higher up, painted blue now) in red letters on that yellow tile, D O M I N I O N? Heck, my brother and I used to take orders with our wagon from there as well as the Steinberg's at the corner of Willibrord. (Now IGA) According to my sister, before it was a church, it was a CAR DEALERSHIP!! haha My sister said it looked VERY weird to walk by and see CARS inside there where our mother used to walk around pushing a grocery cart hehe.
Hmmmmm guess we need another pic to guess, huh? Ok....where is this very "unique" Verdun lane? hahaha Les knows it...I know he does cause we talked about it once here. So you're exempt from this one Les hahaha unless nobody else knows where it is...
Good Morning Maggie! Hello Little Sister. I remember Mr Johnson also he was the gym teacher from England wasn't he? Aside from maybe being the pet you you also good in gym class back in those days, I also remember him teaching us to play (cricket?) with the flat bat and running around the chairs. He also always refered to cigerettes as FAGS.
To meesage 72, to Starry Sharon1; Your sister right on, it was Called York Automobile, a Chrysler, Plymouth Dealer and in the 40's it had Gasoline Pumps right in that corner, and gas was 0.17cents a Gallon. Gordo - RV
Maroonvet, my sis was referring to that corner being a car dealership just a few years ago just before the church took it over. Wow...so it was a car dealership back in the 40's too? 17 CENTS A GALLON?! Geeeeeez those were the days.....
Yessss that's exactly where it is, JM! Geeeeeez I can't stump ANY of ya! hehe yes this lane and another on verdun Ave. between Rielle and Gordon are 2 of the only lanes in Verdun that run right thru to the main streets like that, know what I mean? This particular lane between 1st and Willibrord used to have COBBLESTONES when I was a kid in the 60's, believe it or not! Now who can tell me what USED to stand in the establishment on the left of this photo...which is NOW the Vogue flower shop?
Oh My God Mike! Hahahaha You answered my question a minute before I asked! haha yessssssss the fish market used to be there. Okayyyyy what store was BESIDE the fish market in the 60's?
Can I Play......in this one.............hahahaha I fairly certain I know this building ,I was going to post an old picture of this building.......but it would have given it away............I can't believe how much more Greenery there is in Verdun,,,and all around the island for that matter.........but with todays temp's back there in the 30's+,........You can have my share of that heat & humidity,........but I still like the look of the old Hometown.........HF&RV
Hmmm...It's not Riverview School.... Doesn't look like either of the 2 high schools.... Doesn't look like the old St. Thomas More.. Is it that French School on 5th Avenue near Champlian? Wait....there was a school there, right? hahaha Am I remembering that right? Am I even getting close?
The lane way your refering to in the picture is the lane that connects Wellington St. with 1st Ave. on one end, its the laneway that runs along side the parking lot of the former Steinberg's store (now IGA), there is also a body shop there called Jacques body shop. The laneway runs south to Lasalle Blvd. between 1st Ave and Willibrord.
SHARON SINCE YOU MENTIONED THE SAVOY THEATER ON THE CORNER OF wILLIBRORD AND WELLINGTON AND YOU MENTIONED THAT NOW IT'S UNIPRIX LET ME ASK YOU THIS WHAT WAS THERE AFTER THE SAVOY THEATER AND BEFORE IT BECAME UNIPRIX? DO YOU HAPPEN TO RECALL WHAT WAS ON VERDUN AVE. BETWEEN THE FUNERAL PARLOR AND THE LEGION BEFORE THE METRO WAS BUILT?
I remember in the early 70's. there was a auto repair shop just inside this lane owned by Mickey Labelle. My Dad, my Uncle, and myself all took our s**tboxes to him to be repaired. My first piece of junk was a 1966 Plymouth Valiant four door, with a slant 6 engine. I have a picture that I will try to find, scan, and post. There have since been many pieces of junk, and a few very good cars, especially my present set of wheels.... ...this car does not go to a 'screwdriver mechanic', and never, never to Canadian Tire. I could write a book about my experiences at CTC.
Sharon I am quite sure that the picture your asking about where the empty space is that's the corner of De L'Eglise and Verdun Ave. What was in the space I do not remember but what ever was there burnt down. It was either a store that sold mattresses or carpets. If anyone could shed more light on the question I would like to know the answer to that my self.
Sharon it's the corner of Church Ave. and Verdun Ave. What was in that empty place on the corner I believe was a carpet store but I do not remember the name of it so if anyone can cooberate it I would appreciate it oh, by the way the store burnt down
On the north-west corner of Church & Verdun was a carpet and tile store named Campeau. ( the ole memory cells are getting a workout this morning)....lol Mac.
Hey Brian! Yes you're right about it being a carpet store and as Frenchmac said (and I said in another thread), it's name was Campeau's. Some people had answered this....albeit in the wrong thread haha. As for what was in that vacant lot between the legion and the funeral parlor, as long as I remember it was a fenced in vacant lot. Do YOU know what it was? By the way I answered your question about John and Corina too....I am their older sister.
OMG!!! Hahaha my grandmother used to send me to the fish market for HERS too!! She had even told me how to tell if they were fresh so I wasn't sent back with bad ones heheh. I am creeped out to say....I even watched her cook them and sat alongside her with a pin and pulled them out UGH. I would NOT do that now hahaha
Wow....this older photo of the school doesn't look a lot like it does now, does it? LOL It actually reminds me a lot of what the French School at the corner of Verdun Avenue and 5th did when I was a kid....
Good Morning JMH & Gang......I was going to post that very picture, but I thought it would be to obvious,& give away the answer...........but I Remember one of the brothers, would come out on that balcony, which overlooked the rink......and he would signal us that that was enough for the night ,,,,,,I guess they didn't want to hear our pucks hitting the boards all night ,......but many nights,on those cold clear nights they would often either forget,or just allow us to keep on skating...till 10 or 11pm.......although some nights they just turned the light off ( Remember that lonely looking bulb swaying in the wind, just over center ice...........) Even with it off , there were some of those cold Winter Nights ,..that you could see the stars quite clearly, and still be able to skate........I am really amazed to see how much grass & greenery has bveen grown....in that old asphalt schoolyard........Great Memory's ......I played on those very fire escapes,....as later you wopuld be able to overlook the rooftop of the 'City & District Savings Bank' from those stairs ......You can see they changed the facade,a couple of times, because I distinctly Remember two sets of stairways,on the front of that building,....and a small grass enclosure that ran btwn. them with a black wrought iron fence sround it (maybe 2' high) and we would play on that grass football, using it as our own private arena........some dogs would use it too............(and you had to lookout for that).........hahahahahaha HF&RV
No I don't recall what was there, but I hope someone does. Thanks for answering the question about your brother and sister. I was unaware that you had answered it until now.
I have a question.... Does anyone know, if that statue of Jesus on the corner that's in that old pic, is the same statue that stands on the OTHER corner on a diagonal to where it stands in the old pic? On the corner of Galt and Wellington across from where the metro (train not grocery store...lol) now is? I've seen that statue refurbished a few times and was just wondering how long it has been around....
Les said: >>>>You can see they changed the facade,a couple of times, because I distinctly Remember two sets of stairways,on the front of that building,....and a small grass enclosure that ran btwn. them with a black wrought iron fence sround it (maybe 2' high) and we would play on that grass football, using it as our own private arena........some dogs would use it too............(and you had to lookout for that).........hahahahahaha HF&RV<<<< Les, looking at the pics of the old school on Galt, you can also see when they put "additions" onto the school haha...in one pic it has 3 sections (each of 3 windows on each floor...if you get what I mean)...in another, there's 5 and yet in another there are 7! Did it get any larger than that or did it stay that size, do you know? Hard to tell from the recent pic with the trees all in front.
YESSSSS They DID pave paradise! It is our old field hockey field at VHS....how SAD is that? I couldn't BELIEVE it when I saw that and funny enough Mag, but that exact song ran thru my head too as tears filled my eyes....
Hi Dave, I have placed a picture of a "redtop" on the front page. I guess we are all so used to the term that we forget that it's not universal. "Redtops" were placed along the boardwalk to provide shelter and were often quite "populated" during "sunshowers". They were also used as "bandstands" at times. Anybody else that can add more info here?
Well steveredmond, with all the English on those signs, I'll take a stab at it and say that those pics are nowhere near Verdun...lol. Even in Verdun they still don't have to go to The Beer Store to get their brewskis! hehehe
Hello Steve! Good Afternoon, all that English it does not look like you are in Montreal, so can it be you are the Steve in Ottawa? Have Fun and Keep Young
Hey Chris I couldn't fit the whole picture of Rona in one shot .So it's part of Rona Hardware . A few stores are now sporting the sign Proudly Canadian to show people they are not an American franchise . Steve
Good Afternoon Steve! Maybe I should say Evening there eh, should let you know I be a friend of Sharon's, but I be someones sis on this site, but that would be one of the older sisters of Maggie's.
Sharon: This is a great game. I have put 12 pictures that I took Friday evening in my pictures section. These are all centered on one street. The picture below is from that street, and is one of the most beautiful houses I have noticed lately in Verdun. Anybody have any idea where it is? .......................I also took a series of photos on another street. I will add them within a couple of days. Sorry, these are not digital quality. They were taken with a 30 year old 35mm very used Olympus camera................Ralph.
Good morning Ralph ( multipurposeutensil ) (MPU) ! I really appreciate and enjoy your photos of Verdun. Many thanks ! Did you know that Desmarchais Blvd was named in honor to Julien Desmarchais, painter and manufacturer from Montreal ? Desmarchais family had a farm on the site where this boulevard was built in 1936. As to your question, I would guess Desmarchais Blvd btwn Wellington & Lasalle Blvd. JM
You are correct JM, this house is just below the south east corner of Wellington and Desmarchais. I did not know the history of this boulevard. Thanks for the info. My father lives on Desmarchais above Bannantyne. I did not take any pictures above Bannantyne as it is not a "double lane" as it is between Lasalle and Bannantyne. Now I will upload the pictures of the other street I focused on last Friday evening.
Ok, there are 11 photos of another street in Verdun. This photo is a different view of a slab of cement that was the subject of quite a few messages a week or so ago. Note that in my photo we see that it is elevated which threw away my idea that it was a transmission shop. There are no angled entrances.....
JM: North-west it is!. It is a pleasure to take and post pictures of Verdun and other Montreal spots. I started a new roll of film yesterday with a couple of other ideas to photograph. I should finish by this weekend. Unfortunately, I am not using a digital camera, or I could post every time I take some pictures. Ralph......................................mpu
Seeing that photo Ralph posted of those pretty flats on Desmarchais reminded me of this pic I took almost a month ago when I was there. When I was still living in Verdun over 5 years ago, there was a couple who looked to be in their 30's who I am assuming bought this building...For at least a year and a half, every single day, when I'd come home from work that couple would be working on the building, pain-stakingly stripping away all the old paint until it was down to the original wood. It was awesome to see the changes happening and spectacular when it was finally finished and sealed... Anyone know where this building is?
I'm not sure where it is Sharon,....but I'd say Lasalle Blvd only because the address's are in the 4 digit category,...eliminating most of the avenues.....except way up near Champlain........but I also think I saw a picture,in onbe of the photo albums (maybe posted by MaggieMck)......a house with some great restored wood work.......looking very similar to the picture you have posted here...............HF&RV
Ok I'll give you that Les...it's on Lasalle Blvd (darn it, I shoulda whited out the address haha) Anyone know where on lasalle? And I believe it is the same house that Maggie posted haha
Same pic Les yep...but I think Maggie accidentally put the wrong streets - that building was just 2 away from where Maggie used to live on Lasalle Blvd. between Willibrord and Rielle.
Morning Sharon! Ok I'll bite, would it be where the Harris family use to live between Rielle and Gordon and also where we hung out at one of your old beau's sharon Dougie's.
Tina, do you mean the house with all the nice woodwork? Nope wasnt between Rielle and Gordon. And t'wasn't DOUG who lived on Lasalle between Rielle and Gordon, it was MY house! but he did spend a lot of time there ahuh...
No mistake Sharon, that pic was taken between Rielle and Gordon. I didn't recall it being a residence of anyone I knew. I just admired the restoration.
Sorry Maggie but you're wrong. I was there just 3 weeks ago and took my pic of it...I know exactly where it is, directly across the street from the apartment building Sandy used to live in.
Good Morning JM: I have posted some more transportation related photos in my pictures. There is a south shore Nova bus that was taken outside a Tim Hortons in Greefield Park The driver left the bus running & unattended while he was in the store, but who would want to steal a Novabus anyway? There are also pictures taken at CAD railway servies in Lachine. This company came to mind when I read about an old CPR commuter coach that was donated to the Canadian Railway Museum I believe, of which you provide a link to.............. I rode one of these coaches once from Windsor Station tom Rigaud. Ralph. (I worked for CPR for 25 1/2 years)
I have also posted pictures that were taken from Nun's Island on Thursday morning: I also took Verdun pictures with my 35mm camera. Will pick them up and post some Saturday if possible...............mpu
Good morning Ralph ! Thanks for all your photos ... and your commitment to take some pics of the neighborhood Wellington-Lasalle Blvd-Woodland-Egan Osborne-Beatty ...... and the cross-paths ... JM
I have just posted more pictures that I had taken Thursday evening from Church avenue west to the limits of Lasalle: Can't wait till this place opens...... yum, yum,.................................................................................................................................mpu.
>>>If the address is 4427 as it seems to be , according to Mapquest it is between Rielle & Willibrord.....someone is correct...............................someone isn't..........................mpu<<< LOL! Yesssssss it's moi who is right! haha
Sharon; This is southwest corner of Church & Lasalle blvd. If you walk on the sidewalk to the left of the sign you will get to the Auditorium. The sidewalk on the right will take you to McDonalds. Ralph.
Sorry Ralph haha "southwest" means nothing to me I have no sense of direction whatsoever. Did there used to be a gas station on this spot then? I know there were gas stations on TWO corners at Lasalle and Church but one was closed, right? Is that where the closed gas station was then?
Sharon; Yes there was a gas station on this spot up until a couple of months ago. There is still an Esso station across the street on the northwest coner (going up Church towards Wellington) then there is a Tim Hortons after the Esso. The Esso station was just recently renovated. I took this picture of the sign before reality hit! On the northeast corner (diagonally across from St.Hubert BBQ) is a pizza restaurant...Zappy? Jappy? On the southeast corner?????? I don't remember........"oldtimers"....................................Ralph.
My first thought was that it sure looked like Beurling,....looking towards 'Downtown'.....or East ........and the park like area to the immidate left ,could be the old park that we walked througho to get to VCHS.............. I'll agree with MPU ............so what's the verdict Sharon......yay or nay.................hahahahaha HF&RV
LOL the verdict is that you are both right....you're too good for me! Yup, I was standing waiting for the 112 bus at the corner of Allard and Beurling.
Hi Sharon,....up until about 4-5 years ago,....my buddy owned the building right at the corner of Beurling & Brown,......you can't quite see the storefront in your photo,...but at one time it was a grocery store,..(60 & 70's era).......then when my buddy bought it,...he had a Depanneur in a little stroe around the corner on Brown,....(same building),.....and on the Beurling entrance was a store called Video Beurling,.......Thanks for posting the picture,.......all Verduntype stuff ,sure ignites memory sparks in the old knoggan.............hahahahaha HF&RV
Hi bubbacut,......my buddy owned the whole building,......and you are right when you Remember the grocery store out front & a small store around the side,...but when my buddy Randy owned it,....he had his Video Store out front (on Beurling) & the smaller store entrance around the side on Brown,,,(actually both of them were connected and the beer delivery trucks used to use a roller ramp right into the basement of the store,..or into the very rear (near the lane) on the ground floor was a storage room(garage style)....above it was a suite ,conected to a large rear patio which served as the back gallery(patio) for his house which you got to from the Beurling side,.....so it was actually two stores,,and two houses.......HF&RV
Here are a couple of pictures of a street in Verdun .Can you name the street ? They were taken in March71 ,remember that storm ? My 64 Olds is in the pictures . They are the same steet taken different days .The second photo might give it away you might reconize what's on the corner .Steve
Hmmmm....2nd Avenue? haha Yeah that laundromat at the corner of Verdun gave it away for me...it's been there ever since I can remember. My GP was in that medical clinic right across the street for over 20 years lol.
Hey Sharon your right , second Ave . I lived between on second then. Yeah Ralph that was a good storm . The day the storm started was the day we burried my father . We just got to my mother's place when the storm started .The city was tied up that day . Steve
You don't have to guess the name of this street, it's Beatty, but the question is what streets is it between? My mom lived in the lower right hand side, and I think her address was 667 (not sure?). On the corner up from her was a funeral parlor, but would it have been Bannantyne or Verdun Ave? Cheers, Linda
Linda; Nice Firebird / TransAm. 667 Beatty would have been above Verdun avenue. I don't recall a funeral parlour on this corner. The Bank of Montreal was on the North West corner. Clarke McGillvray & White was a few streets west I believe. This is where my Mom was "laid-out" (for want of a better exprsseion) when she passed away. Ralph.
Linda if you are right about your mom's address on Beatty then it's between Verdun Ave. and Bannantyne Ave. Regarding the funeral parlor there is one on Verdun Ave. it's on the corner of either Moffat or Manning. I know there is one on Bannantyne Ave. but I'm not sure of the cross street it might be Beatty.
Linda; I drove around Verdun earlier this evening, and 667 Beatty does look like this dwelling. The big round pillars are painted a cream/yellow colour and still look to be original. The intersection of Beatty and Verdun has the following occupants... NW: Bank of Montreal NE: Day Nursery SW: Vetinarian Hospital SE: Real Estate agency. The JF Wilson funeral home is on the corner of Manning & Verdun. The intersection of Beatty and Bannantyne has the following occupants... NW, NE, SW are all residences. The SE corner is Clarke, MacGillivray, and White funeral home. Sorry, I did not have a camera with me today. Ralph.
Les: I can not locate your message where you inquired about the park and bandstand in front of the Douglas Hospital. I checked it closer this evening and the park area was built in 2003 with the financial help of Hydro Quebec. (Nice to see that my monthly contribution to Hydro of $235.00 is being returned in part to an area of Quebec that I love). What was very strange today was a couple ballroom type dancing under the protection of the roof...it was raining...The water that you mentioned is not the river. It is kind of a "moat" that surrounds the bandstand area like a castle. There are two foot bridges that cross over this water. There is a fountain to keep the water moving, and there did not seem to be any green moss or algae growing on the rocks, so the water is not stagnant. Unfortuneatly, there is a small amount of litter here and there. Sorry, I did not have a camera with me today. MPU
Hi Ralph, Thanks, you have confirmed that it was between Bannantyne and Verdun Aves. This is just like having a personal roving reporter, and just to let you know, I love following your travels and reports. Keeps those of us who are far, close, and up-to-date on what's happening. Thanks, cheers, Linda

Hello Sharon!
I'll play, would it be Gordon between Wellington and Verdun.
Have Fun and

Tiny
Tina
Sharon, I guess the pic shows a municipal property in a park of Verdun ??? (Willibrord Park ????, Woodland Park ???) JM
Hi Sharon ! Would you give us the location of the Willibrord Park "shack" (Re: Let's Play a Little Game, message No 7) Thanks for the pics. JM
Hi Les ! Here are a reduced versions of the photos (Re: Let's Play a Little Game No 16) P.S. I will look for MTC bus # 3033 JM
Okay here's another for y'all! Where in Verdun is this establsihment and what business(es) did it used to be?
Hi Sharon ! CLUB KOZAK Located in the Verdun borough of the city of Montreal, Club Kozak is the first Martial Arts school to offer authentic SAMBO training in the Province of Quebec (514)362-8880 http://www.clubkozak.com/EN/ 4850, rue Wellington,
Verdun, QC H4G 1X4
Tel. : 514-362-8880
(Wellington & 5th Avenue) JM
Hello Sharon!
Use to be a BANK down on the bottom, upstairs use to rent out rooms at
one time and if I'm not mistaken Ponitac Taxi also shared part of the bottom
floor or the building next door. Or come on you old drivers could I be
totally wrong with the taxi stand and that was on the corner of 4th.
Have Fun and
Keep Young
Tiny
Tina
Hi Sharon, It looks like the Savoy. Danny
Bravo, Danny! It IS what once was the Savoy Theater at the corner of Willibrord and Wellington. It is now a Uniprix pharmacy. You guys are just too good for me, man haha. What to do? Ohhhhh I know! Tell me where THIS is! heh heh heh And if you can tell me WHERE this is, maybe you will be able to tell me what used to be in that spot, because for the life of me I just can't remember!
yes it is what's left of Bannantyne School. I use to go there myself from
september 1971 to june 1974.
Brian
The third picture is definately what's left of the fence from Bannantyne
school I remember that very well because I use to do the same thing, I too
use to climb and walk along the fence. As for the second picture I do not
recall a body shop on Galt, but I do recall a body shop on Gordon just down
the street on the opposite side the school used to be on. By the way when
you were in Bannantyne do you recall a teacher whose name is Miss Reeves?
This is a long shot but I think that this crumbled slab of cement is the parking lot beside St. Clement's Church on Gordon, was always a parking lot as far as I know.
This looks like the corner of Church and Verdun Ave. Guy
Hi Maggie ! Here’s a pic of the parking behind St. Clement’s Church (in front of former CKVL, now CKOI) I think this parking lot dates back as early as the 50’s (even late 40’s). JM
Hi Sharon!
Good Morning You could be right on the Taxi stand funny I can remember
going down the stairs and into the office to bring Jim a donut or whatever
but cannot remember the street. Come on you taxi drivers or ex-drivers give
us a hand here please.
Have Fun and Keep Young
Tiny Tina
Hi Sharon, There was a carpet and oil cloth store there for many years. Torn down after many fires. Danny
OH YEAHHHHHHHH! I remember that! Named Champeau's or Campeau's or something like that....yeah I remember now. Thanks Danny!
Ok, well seeing as Guy knew the locale and Danny knew what the business that used to be there was...it's time for another...lol. I whited out the name on the street sign sorry hehe that would have made it too easy. It's probably an easy one anyway) Where is this photo taken?
This message has been deleted due to termination of membership.
Sharon you must be really tall,......and that must be a big bottle of whiteout..............ahhahahahahahah HF&RV(ave)
Hi Sharon, It is Galt & Bannantyne looking toward Church avenue. Just outside a Church. Danny
I think.
Can you guess what store this is? And where it was?
Wasn't there a Lowney's ice cream parlor in that corner building, probably in the 50s and/or 60s ? Guy
This is the corner of Galt and Bannantyne. Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church is on the left and I lived in the building on the right before it was demolished and replaced by the present building. The Bannantyne school was on the right of the person taking the photograph. Guy
Which photo are you referring to when you say you think there was an ice-cream parlour there, Guy? The one with the concrete slab at the corner?
You're right guy...it is the corner of Bannantyne and Galt. Did the street sign give it away? hehehe
Ralph.
Sharon; If this is Church and Verdun, my guess is that a garage that specialized in automatic transmissions used to be here. Ralph.
That's correct Sharon, the Lowney's Ice Cream Parlor was in the building at the corner of Church and Verdun. Guy
Hi Margaret if you are right the church is no longer at the
corner of Gordon and Verdun Ave. It was torn down to make way for condos. By
the way Margaret you wouldn't happen to know what was on Verdun Ave. between
the Legion and The funeral parlor before the metro was built?
Brian
Hi BPL4719, It was a vacant lot beside the Legion. It was vacant for many years. Danny
I remember Mr Johnson also he was the gym teacher from England wasn't
he? Aside from maybe being the pet you you also good in gym class back in
those days, I also remember him teaching us to play (cricket?) with the
flat bat and running around the chairs. He also always refered to cigerettes
as FAGS.

Ahh Can't I play ,...............hahahaha HF&RV
NOPE! hahaha And you KNOW where that lane is, dontcha?
Hi Sharon ! Could it be the lane on the south side of Wellington btwn Willibrord & 1st Avenue ? JM
I agree with JM.,,,, Standard's fish market was located there. Mike
Anyone else have a photo they want us to guess where it is? I'd like to guess too! hehe
All right ! Location and ... if you want ... name (now and then) of this bldg in Verdun ? JM
Hmmm....looks like a school..... But which one....lol.... Good photo JM! Has MY brain rolling!
It isn't Woodland School is it? Now known as Verdun Elementary? It's a stab in the dark...lol.
Not Woodland school. Here’s another pic JM
The lane way your refering to in the picture is the lane that
connects Wellington St. with 1st Ave. on one end, its the laneway that runs
along side the parking lot of the former Steinberg's store (now IGA), there
is also a body shop there called Jacques body shop. The laneway runs south
to Lasalle Blvd. between 1st Ave and Willibrord.
SHARON SINCE YOU MENTIONED THE SAVOY THEATER ON THE CORNER OF
wILLIBRORD AND WELLINGTON AND YOU MENTIONED THAT NOW IT'S UNIPRIX LET ME ASK
YOU THIS WHAT WAS THERE AFTER THE SAVOY THEATER AND BEFORE IT BECAME
UNIPRIX? DO YOU HAPPEN TO RECALL WHAT WAS ON VERDUN AVE. BETWEEN THE FUNERAL
PARLOR AND THE LEGION BEFORE THE METRO WAS BUILT?
Sharon I am quite sure that the picture your asking about where the
empty space is that's the corner of De L'Eglise and Verdun Ave. What was in
the space I do not remember but what ever was there burnt down. It was
either a store that sold mattresses or carpets. If anyone could shed more
light on the question I would like to know the answer to that my self.
Sharon it's the corner of Church Ave. and Verdun Ave. What was in
that empty place on the corner I believe was a carpet store but I do not
remember the name of it so if anyone can cooberate it I would appreciate it
oh, by the way the store burnt down
Consumers Distributors...............HF&RV
The Consumers answer was for what was in the place of the Savoy ......(not the church av question) HF&RV
Yup I remember a "Consumers" being there too.
Les you said that you know the building that JM posted a pic of, and that you have an older pic too....is it time to post that older pic yet?

I remember my Dad sending me every Saturday morning
to get his winkles. I didn't stay around to watch him cook
them or eat them.
Margo
So....is this the answer to the photo that you posted yesterday? Is it the old French School on 5th Avenue near Champlain, was I right?
OMG it's the school on GALT just below Wellington Street going down to Lasalle Blvd!?? I had forgotten all about that school!
No I don't recall what was there, but I hope someone does. Thanks
for answering the question about your brother and sister. I was unaware that
you had answered it until now.
Ooooh lookie! We need a new "something" to guess! Okayyyyyy.....where is this? This made tears come to my eyes when I saw it.
Knowing Jean Marie, as an historian, he must have the history of the Monseigneur Richard school since he went to that school. The photo supplied by Les-F dates possibly from the 20s judging from the horse drawn carriage and the condition of the photo. Incidentally, I also played hockey in the school yard in the early 40s.
They paved "paradise" and put up a parking lot! Isn't this what used to be the field hockey field at VHS?
YESSSSS They DID pave paradise! It is our old field hockey field at VHS....how SAD is that? I couldn't BELIEVE it when I saw that and funny enough Mag, but that exact song ran thru my head too as tears filled my eyes....
As someone on the list who has never lived in Verdun, would one of the Verdun residents or former residents on this list please explain the word
Redtop
Thank you.
Dave Pinto
Who grew up on Edouard Laurin Boulevard in Ville St. Laurent in the 1950s
Do you know where to find these? Here's a couple of stores I go to a lot . Don't wreck your brains. Steve
Well steveredmond, with all the English on those signs, I'll take a stab at it and say that those pics are nowhere near Verdun...lol. Even in Verdun they still don't have to go to The Beer Store to get their brewskis! hehehe
They could easy be in Brampton,Ont.
Margo
Hello Steve!
Good Afternoon, all that English it does not look like you are in
Montreal, so can it be you are the Steve in Ottawa?

Ahhh Tina your too smart for me. Steve
Your right Sharon It's not Verdun, your sis hit it on the nose,so did Les . Steve
Hey Margo It's not Brampton but you right it's Ontario . Steve
Hey Chris I couldn't fit the whole picture of Rona in one shot . So it's part of Rona Hardware . A few stores are now sporting the sign Proudly Canadian to show people they are not an American franchise . Steve
Good Afternoon Steve!
Maybe I should say Evening there eh, should let you know I be a friend
of Sharon's, but I be someones sis on this site, but that would be one of
the older sisters of Maggie's.

JM
This message has been deleted by the author.
Hi Ralph (MPU) ! Is that the NW corner of Verdun & de l’Eglise (Church) (Your post, Ref. Let's Play a Little Game No 135) Thanks for your pics ! JM
And I believe it is the same house that Maggie posted haha
the caption reads 'Great Woodwork' Lasalle Blvd btwn Rielle & Gordon ........Maggie's original picture.........................HF&RV
Same pic Les yep...but I think Maggie accidentally put the wrong streets - that building was just 2 away from where Maggie used to live on Lasalle Blvd. between Willibrord and Rielle.
Morning Sharon!
Ok I'll bite, would it be where the Harris family use to live between
Rielle and Gordon and also where we hung out at one of your old beau's
sharon Dougie's.
HF & KY
Tiny Tina
This message has been deleted by the author.
Yesssssss it's moi who is right! haha
Ralph, where exactly is that pic of the chicken joint that's being built? I'm trying to get my bearings here...is it on Church Ave near Champlain?
Looks like we need a new pic to guess it's location.... Okies....where in Verdun is this street?
Sharon: Beurling with VCHS on the left? Looking east towards Woodland? Ralph.
This message has been deleted due to termination of membership.
Here are a couple of pictures of a street in Verdun . Can you name the street ? They were taken in March71 , remember that storm ? My 64 Olds is in the pictures . They are the same steet taken different days . The second photo might give it away you might reconize what's on the corner . Steve
Hmmmm....2nd Avenue? haha Yeah that laundromat at the corner of Verdun gave it away for me...it's been there ever since I can remember. My GP was in that medical clinic right across the street for over 20 years lol.
Steve; I remember that storm very well. I was in Grade 10 at VHS and school was closed for 3 days. At that time I lived at 260 Osborne Avenue. Ralph.
Ralph.
Linda if you are right about your mom's address on Beatty then it's
between Verdun Ave. and Bannantyne Ave. Regarding the funeral parlor there
is one on Verdun Ave. it's on the corner of either Moffat or Manning. I know
there is one on Bannantyne Ave. but I'm not sure of the cross street it
might be Beatty.
