Linda Downey Yes I do know her, if it is the same one. There was Linda who went out with my eldest brother Errol (he is 65 now so that would give you an idea of the age). His Linda - we'll call her married George Alevisatos a restauranteur. Linda's dad and mine were buddies. They lived at Benny Farms. Is this the same Linda. Linda even came and visited my mom I think after my dad passed. You know - something is coming back to me - there were two Downey brothers at Benny Farm. Would these be the same folks.
Laurie you have the right Downey"s...what a small world....I don't remember Linda going out with Errol and she did marry George in 1968. I was in the wedding party...so many years ago!!! Linda's dad's name was Charlie, he passed away about 6 years ago. Linda has a sister named Wendy. Linda and George are divorced but are back together.... My other uncle who lived at Benny farms was Fred Downey...he passed away in 1989. Definitely the same people! Dianne
OMG This is too much for me. Wow. I remember your uncles. They had gardens at Benny . My daughter would come home with bags of green beans and rhubarb from them. They were nice. My dad passed in 1995. Did Barbara live at Benny Farms - If so I remember her. She was taking care of either her mum or dad. She is a very tidy lady, immaculate hair . All those names, I remember - I remember something about Errol wanting to meet Linda - Did she work at A and W a hundred years ago. I remember he brought me along with him.in his open sports car. Cool dude. I remember going to her house with Errol when I was a kid and being introduced to someone. I was about 5 or 6. This person was crippled ?? To add to the subject - Did Paul recognize my picture I posted on Crawford Park Stuff Message 56 or 58 I Believe
Hi Laurie....Paul didn't recognize your picture, sorry, but asked what your maiden name was and he did know the Boyles and Vachon. Barbara didn't live in Benny Farms, she has lived in Saskatoon for years. Her parents, Jack and Elizabeth Downey moved from Jogues street to Dunver Cr. in Crawford Park....must be in the 70's...not too sure of time lines anymore! Yes both uncles had gardens at Benny farms and both loved gardening. They were real characters, loved and lived life to the fullest. My other uncle was Fred Downey and his wife's name was Alfreda. Linda had a sister Wendy and their mom's name was Dorothy or Dot. Linda worked at the CPR in Windsor station when she got married in June 1968 but then soon after quit and she and George opened "By George Deli and Catering" on Green Ave. I don't know who you mean who was helping the parents and I don't know who was crippled. I married Paul in 1970 and by 72 was living here in Nova Scotia. So a lot of stuff went on that I didn't know of....My mom who was Charlie's and Fred's sister was close to them and she would usually keep me up to date. Also when ever we'd go to Montreal I'd make it a point to see them (uncles and aunts) not always saw the cousins because everyone is busy. What a hoot this....you never know who you'll meet in life that knows the same people! Dianne
Maybe I am getting mixed up with the lady at Benny Farms being your cousin.. If I have made a mistake sorry. Benny farms was a tight knit little community which was nice in that every one looked out for each other. Maybe she was a neighbour helping out for what ever reason. I know there was a picture that my mom had of Errol and Linda at a grad dance. Linda must have had a summer job at A and W, because I remember Errol meeting her there and bringing me along Errol got married in 1966. and lives in the U.S
Laurie....Paul remembers your brother Errol and your dog...he is laughing...he says holy cow...brings back a lot of memories from the past but he says he doesn't remember you, and he says he is sorry about that. He says there were a lot of kids at the playgrounds and parks that he worked with during those years. Next time I speak to my cousin Linda or Wendy I'll mention you to them. I don't see them much any more but my aunt Shirley, she is the one with me in the chicken picture keeps in touch. Shirley lives in St. Lambert. And Shirley was Charlie and Fred's youngest sister. I don't remember Linda working at A&W but she is a few years older than me too. I wonder who else we both know.... Dianne
Laurie...how did your dad and my uncle know each other? Was he a friend of my uncle Fred's too?...the more I think about it the more familiar the name is...but maybe just wishfull thinking. Dianne
Happy Di When my folks moved from Verdun to Guelph Ontario with the mass exodus down the 401, they decided to move back after two years. They applied and got in the Benny Farms for Veterans. There were monthly meetings, coffees etc. Linda's Dad looked familiar to my Dad and Mum so they introduced themselves, and that is how things got rolling. I don't think they visited each other at the appartments but they were "buddies". They would meet at the laundry or garden or garage and have conversations. A few Benny vets were at my Dad's funeral, Charlie Bolton you may have heard of him, and Linda's Dad. That's OK about Paul not remembering me. There were so many kids in Crawford Park going to this summer school. I remember Brian Connoly - Isn't he a priest now. There was some guy called BUSBY. Does Paul remember him. How old would Paul have been when he did that job. Did he have a sister who delivered newspaper before Serge Zouiken and Tanya took the route. Maybe I am getting confused again. Laurie
Happy Di Did you know that some of the "old Benny Farms" has been dug up and a new modern wheel chair accessible apartment building built. The rest of the land is being argued about the last I heard. My father's name was Russell Etienne (Sr.) and they lived at 3940 Benny,
Hi Laurie; Charlie Bolton kind of rings a bell too. Brian Connolly is no longer a priest. He left the priesthood about 1972, married and had step and foster children. His wife died several years ago and in 2003 he remarried. Paul and I have kept in touch with the Connolly's all these years. Brian lives in Hudson, P.Q. and teaches in a high school out there. Paul has an older sister, Janine. I don't know if she delivered the newspapers but Paul had a route when he was a kid. He did the parks and recreation job during high school and college years. So from mid teens till about 21years old or so. Dianne
Hi Laurie...yes I heard about the new building...my aunt Alfreda, Fred's wife, lives in one of the apartments. Did you know that there is a Benny Farm message board? I came across it a couple of years ago when I was looking for info on Marymount High which was my High school. I knew a lot of kids from N.D.G. at one time and have lost track of them now, except for one or two. Dianne
Hi Dianne Well, I have totally enjoyed today chatting with you and others finding out about things in my past. I was trying to think of who the paper girl was and it was Jackie Manley who delivered before Zouikens. Would Paul remember her. Laurie
Hi Laurie: Paul knows Jackie Manely but Zouikens doesn't ring any bells. Yes this has been a lot of fun and Paul enjoyed hearing all about it. He's the one from Verdun and should be on VC!!! But then if he was on VC I'd have to behave myself and that wouldn't be any fun at all! Well, I have sat at this computer all day and now I am signing of for a few hours. I better get a few things done here. Ciao!!! Dianne
Hi Ed: You think so?....LOL!!..... I have tried to get him to join but he says no. Some nights or days, I am sitting here and I'm laughing out loud and he says "what so funny, what's going on, tell me .....oh, that's so and so I remember ......" Dianne
I will try to find a picture as I remember the laundry well.Passed it everyday on my way to school.I lived on Wellington btwn Gordon and Galt so walking up Gordon was a regular thing.
