Hi Ralph ! Thanks for your pic (VY1228) showing Charlevoix bridge taken from Atwater pedestrian & cycle bridge (Passerelle Atwater). Here’s another photo of Charlevoix bridge taken from Passerelle Atwater. (The original Atwater bridge was dismantled in ca 1960) JM
Hi Bob ! I think it is the old bus terminus on Dorchester Blvd (now Ren챕 L챕vesques Blvd) , in the back we see the former Laurentian Hotel (not sure). Hope that one member can bring some accurate description. JM
Isnt that the Sun Life bldg in the background. I remember going to that bus depot to take the bus to places like Cap St. Jacques, Magog etc. I would have been a very small kid so it was in the 50's - surely antone who recognizes the Taverne could say exactly where it is.
Dorchester & Mountain,....for sure, the Laurentian in the background is right,.....and if you look on the bus station, near the top of the building,.you can see the letters CTP,.the french translation abbreviated,.of the Provincial Transport Company......Compagnie Transport Provinciale ( sorry about the spelling )......but this was the fore runner to Voyageur,......at least that 's what I'm led to believe..........................................HF&RV
Thanks to all for the historical infos. Here’s the text accompanying that photo (VY1234) : We're told that this is the Greyhound station, but we can't see any running dogs, and even the buses look funny in this B&W view from about 1950. Can anyone tell us if this was really the Home of the Hounds in Montreal ? http://www.strayhound.com/depots/depots5.htm Have a nice day ! JM
Hi Les ! You’re a really good observer to detect the sign CTP on the roof. (re: VY1234). I can barely read Greyhound Line on the wall (side of Mountain St.) and Transport Provincial on the Dorchester Blvd. side. JM
WOW! What a site! I could not believe that upon looking at the Massachusetts section, there was a stop in Marlborough, the next town over from wheree I live in Northborough! The picture was taken at the corner of Main St & Newton St.. The building on the immediate right hand side is where the Masonic Lodge was. The Masons owned the building and leased the street level to small businesses and used the upper floors for the lodge functions. Unfortunately, the building was burned to the ground in 1973 by a couple of young teens thinking that arson was fun. This was long before I joined. We lost a lot of masonic history, but were still able to salvage a lot just the same and rebuilt our lodge on the same spot. I have been a member there since 1989 and I will try to get some pics of the blaze to share with you. Thanks so much!
Two buses serving in Verdun in the mid 40’s and early 50’s. Do you recognize this place in Montreal ? FOR BUS FANS ONLY: 1) Make & model of the first bus ? (not too tough) 2) Make & model of the bus behind ? (tougher) Photo taken ca 1955 JM
Hello JMH it's funny you posted that particular picture of that bus,...I have had that one saved for a quite awhile now,.and I thought that you Bus guys would have known it,...........glad to see it posted,....it's a Real Character type bus,....almost as if it has it's own face & personality,.........and Remember there were usually only two heaters on these MTC buses in those days,....one was under a two passenger seat,..and then there was always a heater, under one of the single seats,......but you would almost have to have that heater in your pocket,...because on the cold days,.when the bus would come to a bus stop & the door would open,...you would immediately feel the Cold Montreal Winter air come flowing through the bus,.....and you just hoped there wasn't too many people at the stop,..so they would get that door closed.............hahahahahaah HF&RV
Hi Edbro682, The dairy was Guaranteed Pure Milk. They, along with Elmhurst Dairy, Bordens, JJJoubert, Poupart Dairy & Ernest Cousins Dairy were the milk companies I remember growing up in the forties & fifties in Montreal. Probably Parmalat or some other big company owns them today. Whatever happened to the Provincial Transport Bus Company that used to have busses running to all parts of the province from the Dorchester Street Bus Terminal?
Hi Jean-Marie, I'll say the location is Atwater & St Catherine and is that Western Hospital in the back ground? Is the 1st bus a White Motor Bus & the 2nd an ACF-Brill? I remember mostly the small General motors busses on the Atwater service.
Wow now that brings back memories for me, my uncle was a milkman for Guaranteed Pure Milk and my brother always wanted to be a milkman just like my uncle. When he turned 18 he got the chance and was a milkman for many years. I remember (I being 10 years younger than my brother) he used to take me in the truck, it was so much fun & I was so proud to drive around with my brother. I had almost forgotten about that until you mentioned GPM. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Hi Walter ! I agree with you on the location. Also, we can see the Montreal Children’s Hospital (2300 Tupper St.) in the background. As to the buses, I also think that the first one is a White (I barely read the fleet No 535 ??? --- if so, it would be a model 788 bought in 1944, 40 seats, gasoline engine). Here’s a photo of a White bus, model 788, fleet No 2824, Boston, Massachusetts. http://home.gwi.net/trolley/collection/buses.html Concerning the bus behind, I would guess for a CCF-Brill (not 100% sure, considering the apparently rather straight windshield which was slanted on the Brill) I also very well remember the small GM on line 8-Atwater-Lasalle (Verdun-Atwater). Rainy day in Chicoutimi, how is it in West Palm Beach ? JM
Hi Jean-Marie, Here is a 1947 Ford bus I got off the 'Old Pueblo Trolley.Org' site. The photo was taken in 1950. Bus driver C.S.'Tiny' Noel is seen in front of the bus. Did the Tramways have any of these busses? Was this the little type of bus I'd see tooting through NDG? I remember these little busses being used by Laval Transit running from Cartierville to Laval Des Rapids. I also think I can recall Murray Hill Transit using these busses for Montreal tour busses running from downtown to the Chalet lookout on Mt Royal. I remember feeling sorry for tourists on a Murray Hill bus when they could have a lot more fun riding the streetcars up Mt Royal mountain. Are the leaves in their prime in Chicoutimi right now? My computer blew up last week & I was off line for a few days. We've had a lot of rain in West Palm Beach the past few days. Walter
Hi Walter ! I had in mind exactly the Ford buses of the Montreal Tramways Co when I looked at the 2nd bus in my post VY 1246. MTC bought many Ford buses in 1941 (model 19B, 27 seats, fleet 101-111), and 1942 (model 29B, 27 seats, fleet 112-150), Unfortunately, I don’t have any pic of a MTC Ford buses. Here is a pic of a Ford bus from 1946: *** Ford bus, 1946, model 59B. *** I have a vague souvenir of seeing those Ford buses on line 53-Lasalle-Verdun in the mid 40’s and early 50’s. I think that the CCF-Brill of the mid 40’s seems closer to me to the second bus of post VY-1246. As to the leaves in Chicoutimi (you will see them in my posts VY-1230) , many have already fallen, I’m filling many garden plastic bags ... (Leaves are processed at the City's composting facility). Have a nice weekend ! JM
Hello JMH I like that photo,...............where did you find that one,.....I know I've never seen that one,........its btwn the 2nd &3rd periods,...and Montreal is leading 3-2,.....somI thought i'd check the site...............HF&RV great picture BTW
Bonjour J-M; This is the Mtl Childrens hospital...we can see a small bit of the old forum on the left side of the photo....with Atwater park in between....nice photo........Ralph.
Hello Les, Sandy, Ralph ! Yes, it is the Montreal Children's Hospital. I have found this exceptional photo on the website of the Montreal Children's Hospital. http://www.thechildren.com/matpat/index.html JM
Hi Jean-Marie, The bus is in Longeuil not too far away from where the Montreal & Southern Counties St Lambert streetcar used to have it's turnaround loop-Walter
JM; I would never recognize this area. I work in Longueuil on the corner of Maisonneuve and Papineau, just two streets from Ste.Helene. There is almost no undeveloped land today. I will try to take a picture from this exact spot..........mpu.
Hi Ralph ! I cannot recall of that street of Montreal: (your recent post (11 Oct. 2005) in the PICTURE section ) 2-way traffic and what appears to be a private pedestrian bridge !?! Thanks for all your photos ! JM
Would that street not be Mountain or Drummond,.....as the large building should be the Bell Center (formerly the Moson Center).....and if were looking at that street in question from Mount Royal,.....then the building with the pedestrian walkway,...should be the Bell Centre (Centre,if you've forgotten),....hahahaha but I think the streets that surround the 'New Forum' ( a Centre by any other name).....should be Mountain.....LaGauchetiere West (or O),....Stanley ? and at the very lower end StAntoine.....(isn't it),.........it's been a while since I've been there,.........and when I went to see the Habs in their new environment ,I didn't look at the streets,...........I'll have to dig out my Progrmas from the games i attended in March '96,.......a supposed limited edition program, comemorating the first game in the new joint,.........I also have a numbered comemorative 'Final Program' from the final game at the Montreal Forum,...........they probably made only 100,000 thousand of these, even though you could only get less than 20,000 in the old Forum..........hahahahahhahahahaha Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Les, you are too good, yes this is Mountain street............................ Chalet & Lookout is circled in RED, Bell Centre in BLUE, Mountain street is LIME, and the walkway to the trains is YELLOW. (yellow)..............mpu.
JM: I went to the intersection of Ste.Helene & St.Laurent streets today at lunchtime, but it was too dark and rainy to take any pictures. There is nothing at all to compare with the photo. You can not even see the JC bridge because there is a highway built up and blocking the view from Ste.Helene Street (RED dot).....................................the ramps to and from JC bridge are in BLUE.
JMH I played on a lot of those rooftops,.....there wasn't anywhere we didn't explore as kids,.........Although the a few of the original buildings have been replaced,..it still reminds me of being a kid,........ You must Remember the steel staircase (fire escape) on the Wellington St,..side of your old school,...well at the top of that fire escape,.you could climb over the railing and walk across the exposed steel beam,.and then jump over to the City & District Savings bank roof,...and then walk towards (usually run,.......hahahaha) Gordon Av,.and climb back down through one of the trap doors at the top of one of the sheds.......and make good our getaway......I sat on roof tops up there with walkie talkies,.and some alligator clips,to attach my antenna to some convienent electrical wires that ran along the roof to service all the homes.....( I guess we thought it would make a good antenna, for our walkie talkies.........hahahahahaha ) it's amazing we're still alive,..........HF&RV

Nice old picture JMH.........Good to have those old shots....... It's funny that your on the site right nw,...teresa & I just came back from a walk,.and I pointed out to her that one of the houses along the way,.had 3 old Prevost (at least I think tey were Prefost ) bus's,..in front of his home ,.and I said to her that one of oOur Members would know & appreciate these old bus's........I have passed his house before & he only had one ,...so either he's has friends visiting,...or he's a shop-a-holic- They looked like they had been converted to RV's ,......I imagine they would be fairly compfortable,if done right,,,,,,they certainly would have the right frame for it. HF&RV
Hello Walter ! Good to see that you didn’t suffer too much from hurricanes and tornados. As to the streetcars, here is a pic of the interior of one (taken at St-Constant museum). You know that one of the candidate for mayorship in Montreal was Richard Bergeron (ref to my post VY1278). His political platform (Projet Montr챕al) was about sustainable development (among other things, the reintroduction of the tramways). The website of Projet Montr챕al: http://www.projetmontreal.org/?lang=en JM
Thank You Jean-Marie. Richard Bergeron would be my guy then. In my opinion Montreal lost some of it's soul when the tramways stopped. Bringing them back would be fantastic.
Hello JMH ,..my guess is that it is the building that became CKVL,...it's the only building that I can think of that had a Mrquis ,.like that and a large upright sign,...I see that the sign on the bilding in your photo says 'Dancing'......CKVL had a stage,.and a (what could be termed ) a Dance Floor ....................Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Hi Les ! You’re right! this is Gordon St. looking South. We can see a streetcar going North (towards Wellington). At that time (1899-1945), there was a loop (Wellington--Rielle (South)--Lasalle Blvd (West) --Gordon (North) ) for the tramways serving on line 58-Wellington and then 25-Notre-Dame Cote St-Paul. This loop was abandoned in 1945; it was used exclusively by the tramways on route 25 from 1925 till 1945. In 1924, a new loop was built (Wellington--Woodland--Lasalle Blvd--Argyle) for line 58. From 1945 to 1953, route 25 also used this loop. The bus replaced the tram on route 25 in 1953. BTW, at that time, the building was a dancing hall (Wood Hall), it became CKVL in 1946. JM
Hi Steve ! My suggestion: Company: HAMILTON & DUNDAS STREET RAILWAY Fleet No 1, bought in Aug 1878, made by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Type: 0-4-0 steam dummy (the first 0 stands for 0 leading wheels, 4 refers to 4 driving wheels and the last zero refers to 0 trailing wheels) Serial Number 4395 You will have more details on 0-4-0 steam dummy at the following site: http://paintshop.railfan.net/images/moldover/0-4-0_dummy.html Here is a pic of the only 4-14-4 locomotive ever built (A. Andreev, USSR, 1934) 赳 надеюсь эта информация будет некоторой помощи (I hope this information will be of some help) JM
Hi Steve ! Some infos about the Big Boys (made by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) ) ... Big Boy: The world's largest steam locomotive, twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of "pilot" wheels which guided the engine, eight drivers, another set of eight drivers, and four wheels following which supported the rear of the locomotive. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah and Cheyenne, Wyoming. More at: http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/history/loco/locohs01.shtml JM

hi JMH greast pictures,........sure looks like a cold day on the Lake,...........it also looks like you were first on the scene as well,....no other footprints in the snow... as for the Verdun picture those trees look like they are further out from the houses,...and that would make me think it's on a wider Blvd......? Good Morning JM, welcome back. I would guess that the bus is an old STM piece of equipment. Judging by the poor quality of the sidewalks, and the general look of the place, as well as the Lada beside the bus, is it in Europe? France? Verdun, France in particular? The licence plate however makes me think that is somewhere in the USA however. Iowa? Utah? .....................I give up, Ralph/mpu
Hi Ralph and Bob ! Your description of the site is quite interesting and the origin of the bus is indeed Montreal. Here is a larger pic. The identification of the place will become obvious. JM
Many of Montreal's old streetcars were also sold to Cuba,.....with a smart guy buying them from the City for scrap prices,..and re selling them to Cuba,...so I'm not surprised to see Montreal Bus going the same way,.....all they did was paint over the nubers on the front of the bus it seems,......because cosmetically they really didn't do too much else,....but it 's good to see something that we would label as obsolete,....getting used for many more years,..... ..I wonder if it could have been this Cote de Neige bus .....it's possible I suppose,.........I still think of these style buss's as the 'new Bus'...........hahahahahah
Btw,./.Welcome back JMH,.......Can I call off the Chopper Mission,......I sent these guys on ,to look for you and Guy5479,...... ..........but we found you both,......now to find some of our other members that are MIA,....... like ElTex,......dflood,........USNavyBob.........etc etc ....
Hi Les ! (Re: post VY 1315) My guess is that this is an old GMC (TDH-5303) bus, part of one of the 3 STCUM (now STM) fleets bought in 1965 and 1967 and sold to Cuba. Here’s the pic of an old GMC (GMDD division) in Montreal (line 80-Avenue du Parc/Park Ave). This bus (fleet 5025, model TDH-5303, 45 passengers) was bought in 1965 Montreal bought 100 TDH-5303 in 1967 in view of Expo 67. (TDH: Transit Diesel Hydramatic) Can you identify the exact place where this bus stands in Montreal ? BTW, the photo of the bus (fleet 24-052) in your post (VY1316) is a GMC (GMDD div., model T6H-5307N, 42 passengers) bought in 1981. I think that the photo was taken on Guy St. just north of Ste-Catherine. Do you agree ? I didn’t know that Cuba had streetcars ! JM
Hi JMH ,..that is a lot of informaetion,.about the bus,....but you forgot to mention,...whether the fellow getting on the #65 Cote de Neige, bus paid his fare in cash,...or did he use a bus ticket,.............hahahaha I cannot see the picture in your post,.so I acnnot say or even guess where it was taken,...when I see it ,.i will post a reply,.... as for the sale of old MTC stuff to Cuba ,.I will have to find the site with the related article,...but it went on to explain that the guy or group that bought them from MTC,.made a lot of money off of them,..which is a little ironic ,..seeing that such a profit was realised from a country that doesn't ( or didn't ) believe in Capitalism,.......but they don't mind selling their cigars for $300/us/box,.........hahahaha A freind of mine just brought 2 boxes back from Cuba,....I found that funny cause he doesn't smoke......hahahah but he gave them away to some of his customers,...who liked them,.......I declined the offer of one,..simply because I do not smoke,....and really wouldn't know the difference from a good(expensive) cigar,..or the old 'Colt's Rum Flavoured Wine Dipped,..ones for .35 cents a box of 5 ( at least that's what they were 30 years ago, the last time I smoked ....come to think of it I think cigarettes were under a dollar too,...because that was everryone's battle cry,.that they would stop smoking when cig's hit a dollar/pack...........what are they now,...$6 bucks or something like that..........
When I went to Cuba in 2003 I went to the eastern end (Holguin not Guantanamo) where the buses were all smaller school type buses, or most of the time open back trucks with wooden frames and bench seats. There were mostly old american cars or new Peugeots (sp.?) , don't see them or Citroen's in Montreal anymore, no loss that is for sure. Bob, I noticed the ''thick'' air but assumed it was taken on the edge of a river or lake, and that it might be fog/mist. Where I was in Cuba everything was very clean, except when we went to visit the town of Santiago de Cuba, this was a different story. We did not feel safe walking around there......beggars, prostitutes, ''salespersons'', but we were fine anywhere else we went.
Hi Joan ! You’re right. The streetcar is on de Monts St., corner of Allard. Tramway Line « 36 – Notre-Dame/Ville-Emard ». 1952 marks the end of the tramways in Ville-Emard. JM
Les, when the LaSalle Bar-B-Q, was first opened on the corner of 4th Av. in the Bronx. He thought that he had a right to that Name...But on LaFleur Rd. out in the Heights of LaSalle, their already was a LaSalle Bar-B-Q. So the owner had to change the Name of His Restaurant, to I Believe it was LaBelle.....The original LaSalle Bar-B-Q. was closed sometime in the early eighties.....So sad....

Here is a page of Lovell’s Montreal Directory (1929) This document is available online at Biblioth챔que Nationale du Qu챕bec website: http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html The document currently covers the period 1844-1929 (and the project is intended to continue for 1931-1999). On page 585 (Wellington St.), you will remark the Montreal Tramways Power Room at 3980 Wellington. JM
Thanks for posting the Lovell's Directory....I did a search and found the years from 1926-1929 directory listed both sets of grandparents, where they lived and it listed their professions at that time. ....This is great for people like myself who are researching family trees....Dianne
The Church in the backround looks like the French Church on Charch Ave. Cote St. Paul.If that's right it's the Notre Dame Streetcar crossing train tracks. Steve
Looks like it suffered through a Fire at some point,....... I also think that they may have torn this Church Down at some point,.....as I can Remember either seeing,.& or Posting those photos of it being demolished. Hi Jean-Marie, Loved your photo of the Lachine 91. I think of two sad things when I see this picture. One, I never got to ride this model streetcar but did see them during the rush hour. Two, not only are the streetcar tracks & trolley wire gone from this location but the railroad tracks have been removed as well. The tracks to the old Bonaventure Station across the street from the DOW Brewery should have been kept and turned into a commuter train or light rail trolley car line that could have served Montreal's West End very nicely. Let's hope Montreal builds the two planned trolley car routes, The Park Avenue Line & The Champlain Ice Bridge trolley car line to the south shore. Montreal should have maintained their amazing streetcar system that covered all the major areas of the city.
Now the mention of the old bldg,.succumbing to fire,....here's a picture that all the tram & streetcar enthusiasts will definetly not enjoy,....(unless of corse you are also a pyro-maniac,..in this case you'l have mixed emotions)............hahahahaha ..............going out in a blaze of Glory I guess.................hahahahaha HF&RV
You may be right MaggieMck,.......I didn't notice that,..it is certainly missing the two steeples,....at least. Ok Detective, you got me................hahahahaha
Hi Walter ! The tramway in post VY1338 is fleet No 1046. You will be able to visit that streetcar at the Museum of St-Constant http://www.exporail.org/ JM
JM.....Thanks for posting the Lovell's site. Very interesting. I am across the above entry for 1929 while browsing. Guess they had the same problems way back then with regard to both booze and drugs. But a cure????? Judging by today's problems guess not too many went for the cure, eh? Cheers.
Way back in those days, my Nan used to drink something called "port". I think it was sort of a beer/ale, but was black-looking and seemed to be "thicker" than beer. She used to buy a quart, and that lasted her for a week or more. So beware of little grey-haired old ladies. God rest her sweet soul. Cheers.
Hi Les ! Thanks for the link: http://www.etspe.ca Montreal has a Desire named streetcar ! New Orleans has a streetcar named Desire ! This is a streetcar named "Desire". It’s also named "Jackson". And "Canal". Oh, and "Napoleon" too. You see, unlike San Francisco, New Orleans has never numbered or lettered its streetcar lines. Instead, they’ve been known by the names of key streets on their routes. Thus, instead of "F" in its route box sign, this car would have said "Desire", "Canal", or whatever route it was assigned to that day. ... http://www.streetcar.org/mim/streetcars/fleet/antique/952/ JM
Hi JMH I haven't seen you for a little while ,.Although I have been on sparingly with the exception of the odd day, when I had more time,.........so I may have missed the odd message. Good to see everyone still sround,........ the past two days I have been busy getting the yard ready for the springtime plabts that Teresa likes to put in,....so digging up dirt is what I've been doing,....instead of trying to dig up dirt on Montreal...........hahahaha
Son of a 'B' ,you caught me ,...........hahahahah I was just checking the radio broadcast of the Habs game that I shouldn't be supporting,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahaha
hmmm, my words got snowed over! This is my backyard today. The snow has been melting slowly over the last couple of weeks. At this rate, I should be planting flowers in June or July. The white fence is 5ft high and that is a small doghouse in the corner.
Hi Les ! There is still some snow falling on Chicoutimi but not enough to cause problems to motorists. A pic of motorists having problems in the desert of Lybia. Last traces of snow in Verdun (photos March 19, 2006) JM
Corner St-Denis & Bellechasse in 1952. Tramway line 23-St-Denis-Ahuntsic Look at the cars: Pontiac, Chevrolet, Plymouth, ... Can you identify the church ? JM
Hi Ralph ! (mpu) ! I agree with you. I was impressed by that photo. Concerning the church it is: Eglise St-Edouard 6501 rue St-Denis Some historical notes: ... The church is dedicated to Saint Edward the Confessor, King of England between 1047 to 1066. The development of the Saint-Édouard Parish and the construction of its church bears witness to one of Montreal's most impressive periods of growth. During the 1890s, two construction companies (one on Boulevard Saint-Denis, the other at Amherst Park) were particularly active in the north end of the Saint-Enfant-Jesus Parish in Mile End. They were responsible for the construction of duplexes and triplexes which still constitute the neighbourhoods which surround Saint-Édouard Church. ... More at: http://www.uquebec.ca/musique/orgues/quebec/sedouardm.html Have a nice day ! JM
Hi JM, I was so impressed with this photo, that I stopped in this area this morning and took some pics. Unfortunately, I did not get one at the same angle. I know the Eglise St.Edouard, as I was ''forced'' to take dancing lessons there before my wedding ....I have not danced since then ...anyway, here are some pics........... .......a little clean-up is necessary.........the mayor of Montreal says that it been too cold for the blue collar workers to start this outside work, they are too busy doing other jobs..........LIKE WHAT?????? ......the cars have changed a bit, eh?.........m.p.u.
Yes I'm amazed at how filthy Montreal looks in those photos,.Montreal's claim to fame at one time was that for a large City it was incredibly clean,......and I have to say those pics MPU took sure expose a desolate looking area,.relative to those old photos of Montreal,.I think the the city looked far more alive & vibrant in the old Montreal City pictures,...Although the reality is that things do change ,and not always for the better I guess,......perhaps the City will now start to spend some more energy on the city's infrastructure,.like they did revitalising the waterfront around the Island,...........I hope so ,I still think of Montreal as it was ,.and I wonder what outsiders think when they visit the place nowadays ,& wonder what we were thinking, when we speak so highly of it............it'll get better it has to afterall it's Montreal Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Well Les in all fairness, it is springtime, and everything is dirty , from the sand on the roads to the papers etc from the re cycling bins that have blown around in winter and been buried in the snow all winter, having said that , Montreal is in a huge battle right now with city workers , blue collars as they are refered to , also since that gang , P Q , amalgamated all the cities into one, its a complete mess, the right hand does not seem to know what the left hand is doing . Charest is a complete bust in my opinion , so yeah, the city is having its problems , but mostly political , hang tough Jimmy p.s. Coming in from the Townships at night over the Champlain Bridge, the sight of Montreal is awesome, as is Verdun on my left , something to behold, its still an amazing city , vibrant and full of life jim
Hi Ralph ! Thank you very much for the photos. I saved them ! As we can see, street scenes can be very different from time to time (as the stock market ...) I agree with mpu: « .......a little clean-up is necessary.........the mayor of Montreal says that it been too cold for the blue collar workers to start this outside work, they are too busy doing other jobs..........LIKE WHAT??????. » Guess what ? I agree with kungfu: « it is springtime, and everything is dirty. » ... « Coming in from the Townships at night over the Champlain Bridge, the sight of Montreal is awesome, as is Verdun on my left , something to behold, its still an amazing city , vibrant and full of life. » jim I Agree with Les: « ............it'll get better it has to afterall it's Montreal . 쨩 Springtime is coming ! Lets be hopeful ! And one day, the annual springtime cleanup will be completed ................ and ................ in a few years ............ the new streetcars (or trolleybuses) will be part of the scene. Hopefully, we’ll still be there to take some shots !!! JM
JM, I do very much hope to see and ride on streetcars in Montreal. I was only 5 years old when they stopped running, and don't remember ever having been on one. And yes, Montreal will be beautiful again this year, as it always is. When I am crossing Champlain or Jacques Cartier bridge after work the sun setting behind the skyline is an awesome site. Ralph..............................................................mpu
Well I have found the thread ,started by JMH,.......and it has always had some interesting stuff posted,...so I'm resurrecting it again: JMH,,,,,,I hope you will continue this thread topic, as I beleive it describes perfectly much of what we are all trying to recapture,........Verdun Yesteryears,..... I am going through as much of our sites history & members as I can ,.to find old topics ,that might generate some more interest these days,...since there are alot more members, I realize we have a very large Silent Majority, that like to read the msg's,and see some of the srticles & pictures from Our Collective Past's,...... Hopefully new msg's will spark some memory banks ,.& maybe even prompt some new participation from both old & new members,....... We all have stories,...and most of us would like to hear some of them,...we also would love to see pictures of Verdun,..or Montreal,Quebec in general,..People or Places,....they are all part of our history, and we'd appreciate if you feel like sharing some of them:: ........................................................................................
Les-F Looks like we lost Ralph of MPU to the new site. Ralph supplied a lot of interesting photos and old articles inherited from his late father. Maybe you can used your magic wand and have him come back to us. Guy
Hello Guy ,......your right MPU's input was usually interesting ,and his committment to interesting & varied input was always welcome,....but as I mentioned earlier only MPU knows what he wants to do,......and I commend him for doing and participating wherever he feels the need to do so, He would always be welcome here, but that's his call, & I wish him nothing but success in whatever endeavours he chooses I also believe that we have many invaluable members ,whose participation is every bit as important ,.as well as interesting,.....and We do Appreciate all input, I see this Verdun Connections Group ,as one that seems to have the overall viewpoint of 'Sharing ,old thoughts of Verdun's Yesteryears, all the while being able to appreciate all the Connections we do make: We all seem to do our best here ,in maintaining the original thoughts of the founders,& that to me,(as I see it) to Make Connections ,with everyone who choose's to share Our old Memories regardless of age ,..or area,....or whatever else may have been considered a dividing line,.......and to all this I might ad that Everyone is certainly Welcome in my books (at least) to participate : I've always maintained that we "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"ps: We can't be all things to all people,....although I'm sure we would like to be,but MSN itself has Tens of Thousands of Groups ,.....all catering to different levels of interest,......I am very happy that these are available to us,...and I am also happy that ,rather than be disruptive or a mal-content in one group, that People find a group where they are Happy........ I'm sure as time goes on ,people will find that there is a lot of truth in :Not being able to Please everyone all of the time: I do hope that we Can please ourselves by continuing to share Our old thoughts & stories from Verdun:
Hello Again, Guy,......I forgot to mention that a lot of interesting topics have been spawned by others ,like yourself,......and when this happens ,...as with everyone's input,...it sparks some sort of inspiration in each of us to contribute,.......So any topic ,becomes a Thought Provoker,......................and without Thoughts ,nothing can survive...................What are your Thoughts on this subject....................hahahaha/............also Laughter is a good thing too:
Looking at the photo of Verdun Av,...it's easy to see myself ,as a kid walking along the street, going to a friends house.or to a restaurant,or on the way to the monument, Willbrord Park,....or wherever,.......those streets & avenues, haven't really changed ,yet they hold several Lifetimes,of our history,..each 7 everyone of us has a different story (several actually),to tell,.........but we all meandered through all these same streets, with our different thoughts,.........it's funny how we think of these streets & Verdun in general,..as Ours (nobody elses, unless they ever lived there)Quite a strong link to this old village........................hahahahah and we wouldn't have it any other way: I would imagine that all (or most of) the stores on Wellington St,......are right now decorated with Halloween stuff,.........it's coming up quick,.....the Streets are starting to fll up with falling leaves, right now the colours are most likely in full swing of changing,....and with a couple more cool mornings, they will turn yellow & brown,& then an early October windy day will shake them all loose from their trees,& start filling the streets,......Remember walking along and kicking the piles of leaves,in the parks etc etc......little kids loved those piles of leaves,........ all of that to get you ready for the coming winter,.........The Changing Seasons, are great,...Remember being a kid,...........................
After mentionng the mOnument ,I came across this photo of the Monument as well as the Verdun City Hall in the background,... One thing I find odd is when looking up anything re: Verdun,.....it is now listed as Saint-Henri / Sud Ouest............so is Point Saint Charles ,.......??? Is this a voting area? or is it an attempt by the City of Montreal to slowly put it's stamp on the whole Island? ........ ............the park ,does look Ok though,Remember when the library was in the city hall bldg? ...............and the court room, & the license bureau,....& a public clinic, when I was a kid anyway,..............and I have to say,I've been in every one of those locations, several times.................hahahahahahah
Did you know that ,at one time the Sunlife Bldg' was the tallest in Montreal, and also at one time they used to Moor Blimps to it.Like to refelct on old Montreal stuff:Well here's old Montreal stuff ,reflecting on New Montreal Stuff: .............................Many of you may have worked in this old building,....
Hi Les ! As you know, I am a member of metrodemontreal.com (1329 members) http://www.metrodemontreal.com/ http://www.metrodemontreal.com/forum/index.php I posted a lot of messages on these specialized forums. Hi JMH Yes I have come across interesting information on that site before,...that's how I came across your,posts,...very interesting , I will continue to use this thread for certain Verdun things ,just cause it's easier to follow,..for continuity,.......So I hope you don't mind me ,keeping it alive,...but for different subjects,.I will as you say,use a new heading for shorter threads I notice some good direct links on metromedia,....and as I mentioned I have found some interesting things there as well: Good luck and Thanks for reminding us of Verdun's Yesteryears..............
JMH I came across this site a while back,.as you know I tooappreciate trams streetcars etc etc ,......and here's a link that you may like to look through: There are many photographs available of trams from Country's all over the world, http://www.tramway.co.uk/smx/photos/ You can select a country from the drop down menu at the bottom,......There may be some things here that you can also share with metromedia,........ Good Luck & enjoy
I was just cruising the metrodemontreal site that JM mentioned, and I checked out the Monk Blvd/Allard station. Wow, all of a sudden I remember that there used to be a Marshalls 5&10 department store right across from where the original DiLallo's used to be. I remember doing my Christmas shopping there, with probably a whole dollar or two, and having change left over. Nostalgia, yes-sir-eee. It's a good thing. Cheers.
Les, thanks for this interesting site Tramways: Our photo library contains 19738 images http://www.tramway.co.uk/smx/photos/ If I search for Montreal, I get this result (re: Chapeltown Montreal Avenue): A two-deck tramway http://www.tramway.co.uk/smx/photos/photo/?id=1816 JM

JMH .........I actually found it while surfing for Montreal type of stuff,.......and got to that other link through this one: http://www.montrain.ca/bus/monbus.php ..........As I say maybe there's some new information for you to cruise through.
Can any one remember EDNA ROYSTON's column in the Verdun Messenger. She was a little old lady who lived in Crawford Park - and if there was anything going on in Verdun - she would submit it for her column. Laurie
Laurie ~~ I remember Erny's Department Store...on Monk Blvd, but Pep's eludes me except that I remember a fellow called Pep DiLallo. Here's a listing from Lovell's for Erny's. You may be familiar with Pilon Hardware Store which was in that vicinity also, and who knows, perhaps some of the other names may be familiar too.
Laurie, Was it the Messanger or the Guardian? I seem to remember she was replaced By Judy Adcock also of Crawford Park. Her daughter was in the CPYA. Ed
Hi EdBro Well - you have stumped me. Perhaps it WAS the Guardian. I do remember her from the 60s and going to her house with some articles for her column. She was a hard working lady despite her age. Judy Adcock took over ??? I didn't know that. I knew the whole Adcock clan.
Linda - You have straightened something out for me. Erny's Little Department Store. Many a time I would go there to spend my allowance. There was an Ernie and Peps according to Lovell's Directory for 1960 at 6215 Hurteau. It was a cleaners. Thanks for unjumbling my poor tired brain.
I goofed up and I wanted to say If you have one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow you won't have any balance I guess I've been up to long it's time to say good night I hope you all had a good day!!
I can't remember Pilon's Hardware but I do remember a little handy store down near us called Pilon, near Tomba's. My mother would send me there for messages but always cursed the store because everything reeked of taxi-driver cigars which he always had hanging from his face. Everything is quiet - No Winston, Dianne Sandy Hmmm Guess they are busy. Laurie
Laurie ~ Here's my scenario: Winston ~ either in Vegas or thinking about it! Dianne ~ taking pics of new grandbaby Kenneth Sandy ~ probably in lala land goes to bed early, gets up early...healthy-wealthy-wise Cheers.
I think I am going to hike off to bed also. Lately I wake up at 4 - 4:30 am every day. I can not break this cycle. Sooo that makes for a very long day. I can't wait to see pics of the little one.
Winston has put on a few messages today. So maybe he is back from Vegas ? Hmmm. "See ya" tomorrow. Laurie
Laurie, where did she live in Crawfordpark..i can not remmember the name..The women who owned fith Ave theather lived in Crawfordpark. she use to give me a whole dollar for shoveling her path in the winter.fine women she was.
i only sleep 3 to 4 hours then wake up automaticlly..stay up few hours then sleep again..that is why i am always awake from midnight on..2:30 am now.i will go to sleep again for another 4 hours...my body is use to it..i have been to a sleeping clinic..but it id not help me..i am sure that is why my mememory at times is "nil"
Remember hair-do's that were all prissy and stuffy? This one of me was taken back in 1965 ~ 42 years ago....YIKES....as Les_F would say. Remember going to bed with rollers/pincurls in our hair....how did we sleep? Just thought this would give you a little chuckle....well, okay....a big chuckle!
Linda I think you were very chic for 1965! Here's one of me from the same era......My hair is so teased and sprayed it looks like a helmet.....Yikes!!!
I remember when the pic was taken that I thought that the style of hair would be in vogue for eons....like who couldn't like it..... Remember trying to comb it out before bed time????? or better yet....wrapping a headscarf around it so it would stay in place for a couple of days!!!! I'm really guffa-ing here. I recall going through cans and cans of hairspray...must have kept Helene Curtis in business. Anybody remember the Helene Curtis plant/factory on Lafleur?
I sure do remember Helene Curtis!! I am sure I owned shares in that place for all the hairspray and other products that I bought in those days. Joke: Do you know what happened to Helene Curtis? Max Facted her!
I recently found this pic in a box of "stuff". The balcony is where my mom stood to hang her laundry on the clothesline. In reality, it was my own private balcony, see my rocking chair? I never noticed the sheds in the laneway before. Boy it sure looks tacky to my eyes now, but oh so full of character.
These are neat old pics,...............................................and always neat to seeGlad you posted them,.............................................
I still have all my hair, but I am no longer a brunette...my hair is white/silver.... just because there's snow on the roof doesn't mean there's no fire in the furnace!!! Di
THANKS RDM Found them. Diane you look a bit familar. Would you have been friends with my sister Heather Etienne .or maybe I haveseen this picture in an "old year Book" Laurie
Hi Laurie....sorry, I don't know your sister Heather....I went to Marymount High School, graduate of 1964. I think so many of us had the same hair styles that we all looked the same....LOL!!! Dianne
Laurie ~~ I know your sister Heather from St. Aidan's Church in Ville Emard. I believe she was a year or two younger than me, and didn't you have a brother Russell?....A real cutie patootie? Cheers. p.s. Dianne was right.....it was like wearing a football helmet with all the hairspray!!
Laurie where in Ville Emard did you live? You may have already posted that once but I can't remember.....I had a lot of friends who went to Connaught and VHS. Dianne
Hi Linda. Yep Heather was born in March 46, so she is going on 61 ooooh antique and yes I do have a brother Russell. Cutiepatootie - I don't know about that. Just jokin. He would love to hear that comment though ! He married Lynn Everett who is roughly the same age as Heather. Lynn was your cousin JoycH igginbottom's friend, and Joyce was a bridesmaid at the wedding. Laurie.
Happy Di Prior to moving to Crawford Park in 1960 I lived on Jogues Street in V.E. and went to Connaught - Had Mrs. Raines and Iving for Kindergarten and Mrs. Brookes for l. There was mention of Miss Dewitt. in another posting She was the school nurse if I am not mistaken. Was that her that used to ride her bike to school. I remember the indignity of getting those Polio scratch immunizations in Kindergarten and we had to line up, lift our skirts and bend over one by one. Modesty was out the door. LOL Laurie
Hi Laurie: My cousin Pierre (Pete) St.Amour lived on Jogues near the corner of Allard and my cousin Barbara Downey lived on Jogues as well, near Allard. I remember Nurse Dewitt too. She rode around V.E. and Cote St.Paul etc on her bike and lived on Springland street in a small house and had a goat!! I remember the TB scratch immunizations...I think when I got the polio shots they were needles. Dianne
ya know that was the problem.. they did traumatic things to you girls in elementary school when you were at a very impressionable age... and the result... when us guys hormones were raging in our teens.. and we asked you girls to bend over and lift up your skirt.. you gave us grief... and didn't cooperate..

JM; This looks like the same bridge that I took a picture of the day I visited Atwater Market...
Hi folks ! Here are some photos of Autumn 2005 in Chicoutimi (our backyard) Have a nice week ! JM

Hello ! Is there someone who can describe this place in Montreal ? Photo taken in 1950. JM

I can barely read Greyhound Line on the wall (side of Mountain St.) and Transport Provincial on the Dorchester Blvd. side. JM
Hi JM,
WOW! What a site! I could not believe that upon looking at the
Massachusetts section, there was a stop in Marlborough, the next town over from
wheree I live in Northborough! The picture was taken at the corner of Main St
& Newton St.. The building on the immediate right hand side is where the
Masonic Lodge was. The Masons owned the building and leased the street level to
small businesses and used the upper floors for the lodge functions.
Unfortunately, the building was burned to the ground in 1973 by a couple of
young teens thinking that arson was fun. This was long before I joined. We lost
a lot of masonic history, but were still able to salvage a lot just the same and
rebuilt our lodge on the same spot. I have been a member there since 1989 and I
will try to get some pics of the blaze to share with you. Thanks so much!
Best Regards,
Alan

JM

Hey jmhachey. That link to the Seaway Valley Trolly Museum is very good THANKS. Steve

Hi Walter ! Yes indeed and the Montreal & Southern Counties stop in Longueuil was located on Ste-H챕l챔ne St. corner St-Laurent. JM
Hi Les ! Thanks for the infos. Here’s a map (not updated !) of the Bell Center http://www.hotel-montreal.net/motel/english/road_map.html JM
Thank you Ralph for all your Google satellite maps Is there somebody who can localise this map ? JM
JM: You have stumped me here. All I can assume is that based on the latitude and longtitude, I would say the south shore of Montreal...............mpu
Hi Ralph !
Some details on the location depicted in my post VY1272.
The yellow spot is the intersecion Wellington and de l’Eglise (Church).
JM

Old pic of Verdun ...
JM
Many VC members will recognize this area of Montreal ... and the tramway route ...
Oh the ride to Belmont Park , jmhachey or the ride back.
Hi Steve ! You’re right. This is the tramway 17-Cartierville going to Belmont Park. JM

Thanks Jmhachey for that link, that locomotive sure is a huge one . Steve
More at: http://www.uprr.com/aboutup/history/loco/locohs01.shtml JM
jmhachey I put some pictures of some Big Boys in the photo album of Old Trains. That link you posted is a good one,Thanks. Steve "Have Fun n Play Safe"
Thanks JM for the link to Union Pacific. The Big Boys were quite impressive locomotives. I would have loved to see one of them in action. Ralph/MPU

Good morning Les and all VC members ! Can you describe this photo (taken in 2005) ... and its link to Montreal... JM
I don't know but it looks like a bus to me. Steve
Hi Steve ! OK for the bus (If you have the time, you may give the make, model, year, etc...) Can you describe the place ? and the link to Montreal JM
This message has been deleted due to termination of membership.

Hi Steve ! I remember very well the bus driver Ralph Cramden (we listened to the Honeymooners every week at 3812 Ethel, Verdun). JM
Jacques Pharand (1944-2005) ...

Not far from Verdun in 1952 ...
This is Demonts Street, Ville Emard, and the 36 turn around, end of line, I lived at the end of street. Joan Waknel
Hi Joan ! You’re right. The streetcar is on de Monts St., corner of Allard. Tramway Line « 36 – Notre-Dame/Ville-Emard ». 1952 marks the end of the tramways in Ville-Emard. JM
Les, when the LaSalle Bar-B-Q, was first opened on the corner of 4th Av. in
the Bronx. He thought that he had a right to that Name...But on LaFleur Rd.
out in the Heights of LaSalle, their already was a LaSalle Bar-B-Q. So the
owner had to change the Name of His Restaurant, to I Believe it was
LaBelle.....The original LaSalle Bar-B-Q. was closed sometime in the early
eighties.....So sad....

Good morning all ! Oldies TV Museum Bus Fleet: 1948 GM-TDH5101: 2969 (was 4789). The MTA's offical Jackie Gleason bus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Gleason_Bus_Depot JM

JM
Hi JM:
Thanks for posting the Lovell's Directory....I did a search and found the years from 1926-1929 directory listed both sets of grandparents, where they lived and it listed their professions at that time. ....This is great for people like myself who are researching family trees....Dianne
Hello ! Do you remember this place ? Photo taken in 1956. JM
JMH looks alot like StHenri,...............but many Churches had those familiar style steeples,...
The Church in the backround looks like the French Church on Charch Ave. Cote St. Paul.If that's right it's the Notre Dame Streetcar crossing train tracks. Steve
I'm sticking with my first guess Same shot ,.but I missed the bus (just like alot of people in Life).............hahahahaha
Hi Les and Steve ! Of course, it’s Saint-Henri. The tramway “91-Lachine” is turning westward on Notre-Dame St. JM
Looks like it suffered through a Fire at some point,....... I also think that they may have torn this Church Down at some point,.....as I can Remember either seeing,.& or Posting those photos of it being demolished. Interesting old building,...as the whole Montreal area had neat architecture,..... .................................................................._______HF&RF_________..........
The church in this photo (on fire) and the one in the previous post can't be the same one. The facades are very different.
Cheers.
Hi Linda (Mom1945-Linda)) ! Ale, booze, beer, ... A popular ale in those days was the Black Horse Have a nice day ! JM
Cheers.
Hi Linda ! Maybe it was Champlain porter Here is a modern version in a stubby bottle ... and old bottle caps JM
Good to see everyone still sround,........ the past two days I have been busy getting the yard ready for the springtime plabts that Teresa likes to put in,....so digging up dirt is what I've been doing,....instead of trying to dig up dirt on Montreal...........hahahaha

hmmm, my words got snowed over!
JM
JM, this is a very classy photo in my opinion...........m.p.u.
Hi Ralph !
Guy
Hello Guy ,......your right MPU's input was usually interesting ,and his committment to interesting & varied input was always welcome,....but as I mentioned earlier only MPU knows what he wants to do,......and I commend him for doing and participating wherever he feels the need to do so, He would always be welcome here, but that's his call, & I wish him nothing but success in whatever endeavours he chooses I also believe that we have many invaluable members ,whose participation is every bit as important ,.as well as interesting,.....and We do Appreciate all input, I see this Verdun Connections Group ,as one that seems to have the overall viewpoint of 'Sharing ,old thoughts of Verdun's Yesteryears, all the while being able to appreciate all the Connections we do make: We all seem to do our best here ,in maintaining the original thoughts of the founders,& that to me,(as I see it) to Make Connections ,with everyone who choose's to share Our old Memories regardless of age ,..or area,....or whatever else may have been considered a dividing line,.......and to all this I might ad that Everyone is certainly Welcome in my books (at least) to participate : I've always maintained that we "Have Fun & Remember Verdun" ps: We can't be all things to all people,....although I'm sure we would like to be,but MSN itself has Tens of Thousands of Groups ,.....all catering to different levels of interest,......I am very happy that these are available to us,... and I am also happy that ,rather than be disruptive or a mal-content in one group, that People find a group where they are Happy........
Did you know that ,at one time the Sunlife Bldg' was the tallest in Montreal, and also at one time they used to Moor Blimps to it. Like to refelct on old Montreal stuff: Well here's old Montreal stuff ,reflecting on New Montreal Stuff: .............................Many of you may have worked in this old building,....
Hi Les ! As you know, I am a member of metrodemontreal.com (1329 members) http://www.metrodemontreal.com/ http://www.metrodemontreal.com/forum/index.php I posted a lot of messages on these specialized forums. So less time to maintain my old thread Verdun Yesterdays on VC. I prefer to open new, short threads. Thank you for your interest JM P.S. Some persons may be interested in this old map of Verdun (1913) http://bibnum2.banq.qc.ca/bna/cargeo/high/trao0007_n.jpg Look at St-Pierre river, Grand Trunk Boating Club, ...
Cheers.
Les, thanks for this interesting site Tramways: Our photo library contains 19738 images http://www.tramway.co.uk/smx/photos/ If I search for Montreal, I get this result (re: Chapeltown Montreal Avenue): A two-deck tramway http://www.tramway.co.uk/smx/photos/photo/?id=1816 JM
ha...well put
keep it up....
Wow Remember "Verdun Yesteryears" created by JMH.......always interesting & always full of Verdun Stuff............(and Montreal history too) Way to go ... Reply

JMH .........I actually found it while surfing for Montreal type of stuff,.......and got to that other link through this one: http://www.montrain.ca/bus/monbus.php ..........As I say maybe there's some new information for you to cruise through.
.and this one as well seems to have a whack of information,..........re:transit http://www.angelfire.com/ca/TORONTO/builders/ccfcd44.html
Linda There was a place in Ville Emard - Ernie and Peps. Can you remember it. What kind of a business was it ? Laurie
Thanks Laurie. You nudged my brain also. Isn't that what this site is for, eh?
I goofed up and I wanted to say If you have one
foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow you won't have any balance I guess
I've been up to long it's time to say good night I hope you all had
a good day!!
Laurie
Good night Laurie! Dianne

Glad you jave a sense of humour John,..............hahahaha I'm checking out now ,have fun & remember Verdun
These are neat old pics,...............................................and always neat to see Glad you posted them,.............................................
Hey Dianne & Linda Good looking Chicks! Earl.
HappyDi2 I saw your photo l965
Your were with the times and a good looking tomatoe . Great eyebrows.

WHERE's the PICS. WANNA SEE' EM. Laurie
laurie the pics were posted in massages 1404 & 1405.. you dont see them?
And what did they do to you guys in elementary school to make you so one track minded..... Dianne
Barbara Downey - any relation to Linda Downey ?
Yes , Linda and Barbara are both cousins of mine and each other How do you know Linda? Dianne
that one track mind is in our genes...or is it jeans?
