Hi Ralph, My Mother lived in an apartment on the corner of Bannantyne & Gordon early sixties through seventies. 1963-65 I lived in Ville LaSalle. My old memory is smoking here, almost in meltdown. I can remember the #8 then it became the #108. I just cannot remember when it changed. I loved those small General Motors busses used on the Atwater lines & I cannot remember when the change to the larger Canadian Car & Foundry busses were made. Someone mentioned the ice man. I remember when the ice man had a horse & wagon. We would chase after him. He would chip off a small bit of ice for us & we would suck it like a popsicle. Those germs would send today's kids into detox. Thanks for the traffic cam site. I sent it to a buddy who retired two years ago in Montreal then moved to Ottawa. He'll love it. My wife & I are going to visit our son for two days. Be back in the group Wednesday. Thanks again-Walter
Hello Les ! MTC bus fleet No 3033 was part of a fleet (3000-3149) built by Canadian Car & Foundry. The fleet was bought by MTC in 1957, model CD-52, 45 seats, diesel engine. JM, Could be one of the other Currie Brothers opened the other store, I only recall the one on 3rd and Verdun ave, upto 1956 .........then moved to Allard and hung out at Kosta's for what seemed like a lifetime at that restaurant.............later,cookie
Hi Mom1945-Linda ! Yes, I well remember those straps as a former member of the MTC "straphangers club". Some of those straps had no special handle others had porcelain handle. We should create the ASHCMTC. « Take good care of the porcelain » Thanks for the pic. JM
Siighhhhhhhh what a nice pic, JM. The riverside is really different now, isn't it?...but nice, really nice! Judging from your photos JM, I think you and I took much the same walk along the boardwalk and river haha. This was one of mine near the river...About June 26 or so
Hey does any body remember Mary Jones. Here's a pic. of her and me accoss the street from where we lived on Wellington and Woodland West side .It was taken in 1962.Steve
Oh I know exactly where it most likely was, Steve. You're probably right too, that it was taken down when they were building the Stadium. I was probably standing in the exact spot the redtop used to be in when I took THIS pic hahahaha.... Too weird huh, that we took the same pic? As Les has said previously, this is where the old modelling School used to stand and we would toboggan down the hill in the winter and ride our bikes down in the summer. I don't remember the red-top being there then tho, so could it have been torn down before the late 60's?
No Sharon , the Redtop was definetly there, into the 70's ....but it was almost unnoticeable because of the Stadium Bleachers,......it was shaded completely by them.....and very easy to walk right past and not think of them.......it's because unlike all the other RedTops,....you had a good view of them as you apprached from either direction,,,,.....where as with this isolated one ,you just walked right past it.....and headed towards the park,.......or you came out of the shadows of te Stadium,.and continued right past towards the Aud,....or more likely down Galt....( at least I would heasd down Galt or Gordon to go home when I was livung on Wellington btwn those two streets............. we'll have to find a picture somewhere I know there was one around of the Stadium,,with the old bleachers, and the roof of the redtop was showing.......( an old pic).........Is that Stadium gone now ,? ......I don't see it behind the McD's .........HF&RV
I'm sorta kinda remembering the red-top but not sure it simply because I'm trying so hard to remember it, ya know? haha The Verdun Stadium has been gone for quite some time now Les, it was gone even way before I left Verdun 2 years ago. If you look at the McDonald's pic that Steve posted, you can see what's in the stadium's place - CONDOS of course!
Where do the kids play football ,now,....and Verdun always had some decent oprganizations,......Invictus,......etc etc .......also they used to hold City Wide olympics type stuff in that Stadium......( I guess they just simply do not have the population base of young people to keep it going........it's generally older people who buy Condos....(when they tire of yardwork,..and stuff.......mind you it's a bit different living in the City...........if I lived there I could se3e living in a place with a reall good view,.....and your close to downtown if you need to go there....... (except anyway you look at it,.....it's Great in Pictures,....but in person ,....it's still Hot Sticky,........and Cold in the Winter........( and I really don't think I'd want to play outside anymore) .....unless your somewhere where you have the toys,.....Ski-Doo's ,etc etc ........ but I would like to skate outside in Verdun...( and the Rideau Canal) one more time........a pick up game of Hockey in Verdun ,.......followed by a lot of BS and a couple of drinks......... (the Rideau thing is something I've never done ,so I would give it a shot as well.....................HF&RV
I remember the redtop just past Parc Richard on the way to the stadium. It did seem to be shaded, probably between the stadium seating and the houses between Rielle and Gordon. When I was in Verdun in 2001 they were in the process of tearing up the parc (the old tunnel was still there then) and the framework of the condos was well underway.
Les & bubacut, indeed it is the old post office this one is a little bit less easy ... do you remember the different occupants of this bldg ? ... what about the neighbor ? JM
I may be right off but that looks like the building on the corner of Verdun and Church Ave. right across from that concrete slab foundation pic that I posted previously. I can remember it being a women's clothing store called "La Moderne" years ago. I believe it might be a bakery now.... Is that the spot or am I mistaken?
Directly across from that bank,...was the Lowney's ice cream store,.......and of course beside it (you can read the name) Dominion Stores.......now it seems to me that a new building was built beside the Dominion Store, and almost across from the old Post Office,,,,,,(I think it became the new post office).....it had a silvery colour exterior,.....and wide steps led up to those new Aluminum looking doors ,double wide doors........if I Remember correctly...........and I believe on the SE corner was a pastry shop was it Rosaires (I think)......and across from there was a store right on the corner (maybe a pharmacy NE corner) but in anycase there were apt's above that corner store .........a friend of mine lived not to far past there about halfway to Hickson on Verdun Av....bottom floor.(their name was Neeson).....in the other direction on Verdun & Galt (SW) corner ,was a store with a Baseball Pinball Machine........the old type with a ramp that would rise periodically allowing you at a Grand Slam Home Run.......the maching looked like a little baseball park.....with multiple decks.....that determined your score.....eg: single, double,triple.....etc etc ........and down that block about halfway down Galt on the East side,& towards Wellington St,......lives to this day a friend of mine named Claude Rankin.........want me to go all the way aropund the block,.....cause I can take you to the corner where the Church was,......but I rather cut through that little known lane and come back out on Chursh Av....right beside the Florist shop (owned by Old Lady Macahearn) and beside that was the Hobby Shop to buy Models ....( I used to buy & buiold a lot of models)........maybe I just like d the Glue..........hahahahaha HF&RV
Hi Les, Sharon and Bob ! Les, thanks for all the history. Yes, it was a bank (which one ?), then the municipal library, after that ...? I think the present occupant is Restaurant Chez Anas 552, rue de l'Église, Verdun, QC H4G 2M4
your half right La Moderne Woman's store which later became the bakery is directly across from the empty space and as far as I know there was never a bank at the corner of Church and Verdun but there used to be a bank at the corner of Church and Wellington which is no longer there and I believe it was the Bank of Montreal.
Brian, that building which used to be La Moderne woman's clothing store IS the same building that was a bank years ago and is/was a bakery, I think. This was MANY years ago tho. Just take one look at the building and you can tell it looks just like a bank building too, ya know? And yes there used to be a bank at the corner of Wellington and Church too...far as I remember it was the Banque Nationale (I could be wrong), and the Bank of Montreal was and STILL is on Wellington but between Church Avenue and Hickson on the same side that Pascal's (Now a Rona Hardware, I think) used to be on.
Betty, unless the City and District Bank moved, it was on the corner of GALT and Wellington. There WAS a bank at the corner of Church and Wellington too tho. Somneone please correct me cuz I'm probably wrooo.......wrooooooooooooon.....wrooooooooonggggg ugh that was hard to say. hehe
Betty, for someone who hasn't been to Verdun in 58 years I think you're doing superbly! I see by your profile that you live in Ontario now, have you been back to Verdun at all in all these years? I live in Virginia now, in the US but I just have to go back to Verdun at least once a year. Of course, my 2 oldest kids are there (Lasalle, actually, but close enough) haha but I can still see this being a yearly thing even if they didn't.
JMH.......nice picture ....it almost has a sense of movement in the water......it sure is a decieving river,....it can look calm & almost inviting,...but it has one serious underlying current........I wonder what the real water quality is these days,.......perhaps one day we'll see some sort of swimming areas along the banks again......they say everything travels in a cycle.......it would be nice to see the river being enjoyed by lots of families..........even when we were kids the river was polluted......Nice to see it making a comeback..................HF&RV
Hi Sharon ! In the 50’s, if I’m right, the bank at the NE corner of Wellington & Church was the Banque canadienne nationale/National Bank) (neighbor of J.-A. Gagnon Departemental Store). There was another bank in the neighborhood, La Banque provinciale/Provincial Bank on the NE corner of Church & Ethel. You’re right, the City & District Savings Bank was on the SW corner of Wellington & Galt (and the bank of Commerce (before CIBC)) was on the SE corner of Wellington & Galt But, I still don’t know what bank (if it was indeed a bank) was on the SW corner of Church & Verdun (Re: photo VY 837). BTW, do you remember the bldg next to the Bank of Montreal (it was the Tramways bldg used as a power house -- Montreal Tramways had more than 60 power houses sub-stations in the Montreal area). The Tramways bldg (now demolished) was located at 3980 Wellington and the Bank of Montreal at (still is) 4026). JM
Hi Brian (BPL4719) ! Some historical notes: Verdun Model School (built in the early 1900’s) This school became available and was bought by the Sulpicians in 1953, it became Coll챔ge classique Jean-Jacques-Olier, then Ecole secondaire Jean-Jacques-Olier (till 1968, not sure). Then McDonald’s restaurant in 1969 (my guess for the date) Coll챔ge classique Jean-Jacques-Olier 4300, boulevard Lasalle Verdun (Qu챕bec) H4G 2A8 Ecole secondaire Jean-Jacques-Olier 4300, boulevard Lasalle Verdun (Qu챕bec) H4G 2A8 now: McDonald's Restaurants 514-767-7924 4300, boulevard Lasalle, Verdun, QC H4G 2A8 JM
Hi JMH ,....I seriously doubt that there wasa McDonalds in Verdun....till at the earliest the 80's.........in the early 70's ,(when I didn't know any better......hahahah) We used to go through the McDonalds on Newman Blvd in Lasalle,........I cannot really Remember ever seeing McD's in Verdun ,even on many visits back there over the years.......I was very surprised to see it located where it is on Lasalle Blvd....(it just seems out of the way to me) but I guess they spring up everywhere.......& the property at the time was probably alot less than one on Wellington St....not to mention far more accessible on Lasalle........I just cannot imagine walking past Normans French Fries on Wellington....to have something from McD's.....last I checked a 'real ' hamburger cannot be bent without breaking......( and that 's befoer they cook it.......) & fries.......just wouldn't be the same without a brown bag soaking with Vinegar............. I was also surprised to see the Gigantic Donut shops on Wellington ( I think around Willibrord ,..or close by.......there seemed to be alot more Big Signs too... (on Wellington at least).......Remember the old Doughnut shop at 3rd & Wellington.........now those were good.......but I guess as they say 'you can't go home again'..........................HF&RV
When I left Verdun at the end of 1977, the old "Model" School was still there and vacant.(it had been vacant as far back as I can remember). When I was visiting in 1988, the McDonald's Restaurant had been there for a while. That's all I know . Thinking about it now, I think the redtop was directly behind the "model" school.
Thanks Jim I really appreciate the pictures I never actually seen the school but I do know about it somewhat because my mother and her sisters went there when they were young.
Good Evening Brian! You use to take after your Mom,with the singing, while brother Jim played the guitar with Frank, do you still sing. and by chance do you still sing Tiny Bubbles.
Hi Sharon ! Good guess , there’s a deer on the cap and it’s a beer. Hint: brewed only in Nova Scotia since 1820. (Tho oldest working brewery in North America) JM
For those who are old enough , may I suggest a tour of the brewery itself...... click on http://www.keiths.ca follow the steps and take a Virtual Tour of the Brewery......... Incidentally MaggieMck....'not Moosehead' but Moosehead isn't that bad had 3 of them the other night at dinner out.......and I didn't mind them.. but this brewery is not Moosehead.........HF&RV
Molsons is listed as the oldest brewery in North America,......starting in 1786........but the key word is Working brewery I guess.....Keiths isn't bad either....the pale ale anyway......haven't tried the others,......but I'd be happy to volunteer and report back to you maybe this weekend..........HF&RV
there is no more Bank of Montreal on Wellington St. the only one we have left is on Verdun Ave. corner of either Beatty, Moffat or Manning however in the old Bank of Montreal building you are referring to there is an atm for the Bank of Montreal.
the only thing I can't stand about this beer,...are their comercials........the guy screams too much.....if you've seen them you know what I mean............ HF&RV
Hello ! I have tried Alexander Keith’s beer and really appreciated it a few weeks ago with friends at Lac Vert in the Lac St-Jean region. I saved the cap but I’m not starting a collection as I and many of my friends used to do back in the 50’s in Verdun. Photo: Lac Vert, Lac St-Jean region, Qu챕. (July 6th, 2005). JM
Hi Brian (BPL4719) ! Here’s what I found on the Bank of Montreal website concerning their ABM (automated banking machine) at 4026 Wellington: VERDUN -- ABM Only 4026 WELLINGTON VERDUN, QC H4G 1V3 ABM Features -- Instabank EXTRA Cash Withdraw Cash Advance Account Inquiry Deposit Electronic Bill Payment Paper Bill Payment Transfer Interim Statement Passbook Updates BTW, you never heard about the neighbor of that bank, namely the Tramway bldg (3980 Wellington, demolished since a while ...) whose architecture was as impressive as that of the BMO. JM
Hello JMH that is a fantastic picture,........very nice colour .........,.and what kind of camera are you using,...........some of todays automatic digitals take exceptional quality photos.............I still like my 35mm's,......but have to admit to being of the now generation,...and using a digital as well........... that Alexander Keith's is not a bad beer (I didn't mind them) but as I mentioned I've had the Moosehead as well (the Indian Pale Ale...) Remember IPA ......Well try that one you may like it too.... Moosehead makes several different brands,......give it a shot......BTW DID you visit the keiths.ca website ,? & take the virtual tour of that Alexander Keith's 1820 Brewery..? I posted the link a few msg's back ...........HF&RV
Hi Les ! I took this shot (VY878) with my very basic Canon PowerShot A75, Digital Camera. I’ll try the Moosehead. http://www.moosehead.ca/ Yes, I visited (limited visit) the Keith’s website (before scanning my cap) at this address: http://www.alexanderkeiths.com/k_brewery/k_brewery_index.htm (I think I should have photographed the beer cap instead of scanning it). JM
Harry Potter was a Verduner ! At the federal census of 1901, we can find the Potter family living in Verdun Harry Potter, 9 years old, was born in Verdun on October 23rd 1892. He was the son of Herbert Potter and Lydia Potter. His brothers and sisters: Ghertie 13, Charles 11 and Victor 2 years old. Source: Federal Census of 1901 as reported in Les Argoulets, vol. 8, No 3, p. 5 (2003). Les Argoulets is a trimestrial review published by the Société d’histoire et de généalogie de Verdun. JM
I will try and find out how I am not sure but I will try. Thanks anyway Jim, by the way Jim do you know what was at the corner of Gordon and Wellington before Greenbergs moved over there because of the metro. Now it's Pharmaprix.
The Étienne Nivard de Saint-Dizier Historical House This house, which was built between 1693 and 1715, was listed in 1976 as a cultural property by the Government of Qu챕bec. Zacharie Dupuis, its first owner, who gave the borough of Verdun its name in memory of his native region (Saverdun, a village in southern France), bequeathed the house to the nuns of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame. The nuns sold it in 1679 to Étienne Nivard de Saint-Dizier. Of Norman style, the roof of this house is steeply sloped because of its two chimneys. It is 42' long, 24' wide and 30' high. The house's walls and foundations are 16” thick and its floor rests on 10” x 12” beams that were hacked out by axe. Address 7244 LaSalle Blvd. http://www11.ville.montreal.qc.ca/cmspvs/fr/arr24/voir/en/menu/320.xml Photo by Andr챕 Phaneuf, July 10th, 2005 JM
Hello JMH ,. I always liked that house,.....I thought I heard somewhere along the line,...that it was ysed as a scout or cubs meeting house (perhaps in the 50's).......it seems to me I heard that somewhere, but I'm not certain....... is Andre Phaneuf , a friend of yours? I know that I have come across photo's of his over the years (ususlly while searching for something Verdun/Montreal related)........I know he sellls photo's as well ,........but you definetly use his material quite often,so I assume he is a friend or acquaintance of yours.......... Great Story, by the way, I have read this before,as I tend to read a lot of Verdun ( and anything in general actually) stuff..........Thanks for posting it,....... HF&RV
Hi Les ! You’re right! André Phaneuf is a friend, we often exchanged photos. There is no commercial aspect in these exchanges, it is strictly cultural. Thank you for your outstanding contribution to VC ! Here’s a pic of Lac Vert, Lac St-Jean region, Qué. I took that shot on July 6th, 2005. (reduced format). JM
Hello JM, Yesss! "The Stone House"!.................Another of your wonderful historic Verdun gems! I remember well in the 40's my parents taking me to visit a friend of their's that lived on Clemenceau. The bus stopped almost in front of it. And , there was no colder place to be waiting for the bus about 10:00 PM during January. There were a couple of large trees around it that almost played a tune as the wind whistled through it's branches. Didn't the Knights of Columbus use it as a meeting hall at one time? Art
Hi Betty (Grammah2) ! You’re correct ! The municipal library was there (SW corner). Do you remember what was the occupant before the library ? I suppose it was a bank ? JM
To Message 900, The NE corner was a lot with a newstand on the corner I believe the man who ran it Val Sullivan, on the west side of Church just down from Verdun Ave there was a Dominion store. a post office and I believe Theriault funeral home. The library went in the late 40, if I recall right, don't remember what was there before that. Gordo
Hi Gordo (maroonvet) ! Yes, I remember the lot with a newstand NE corner. On the SE corner, I remember, in the 50’s a bakery store selling bread, cakes, biscuits, ... slightly southward, King George restaurant on the same side of Church. Post office and Theriault always at the same place. In the photo VY897, one can see the Dominion Stores behind the old library. JM
Hi JM, It was a bank during the 60's. All the kids at St.Willibrord School had to have an account there at that time to learn to save nickels and dimes.I cannot remember what the incentive was but they must of given us a few pennies to start if we made a deposit. All transactions were done at the school. I remember closing my account when we heard that it was closing, it had a few dollars in it. Just can't remember what bank it was. How about you Les, Do you remember this?? Danny
Hi Danny (Dannyb--1) ! I didn’t know that this bldg served as a bank in the 60’s. Thanks for the info. I agree with you on the visual impact of the wires. Also, the street light had a better looking in the old pic. JM
Hi JMH , looks like somewhere in the east-emd of Montreal.....but I'm only going by those Storage Tanks in the background,...or Refinery Tanks,.....but the openess of the area almosts suggest something like near the airport.....> The Car is obviously a Plymouth Valiant,...but I think it's a 65 ,......as the 63 & 64 models had round rear tailights,.....and this car in the picture has slightly oval style,.......it also I believe would have been the first year that they did away with the Push Button Automati Transmission,.....Rememeber those the selection buttons were on the left hand side of the steering wheel,.........the romoured reason, to get rid of the Push Button Trans , was supposedly ,..that becuase the car was a downsized model and designed to appeal to women as well,...that they (the women) would break thier finger nails on the buttons......Sounds reasonable given the times.....nails were in I guess.......but in any case I'd like to know where the picture was taken....................HF&RV
Les, you’re right for the car: it was a Plymouth Valiant 1966 with a V8 engine. I bought it used and changed it 2 years later as it was burning to much oil (problem with Chrysler cars in those years). There were no push buttons just a regular automatic transmission. but the place (very close to Verdun) still to discover .... ! JM
JMH is this the old parking lot for the origianl Expo site,...and for a shoert period of time it became the airstrip for the STOL aircraft that stood for Sort Takeoff & Landing,,,,,,and operated as a quick commuter service from Montreal to Ottawa ? HF&RV
that should have read SHORT Take Off & Landing (STOL)...............excuse the spelling, but I thought I typed each letter....................hahahaha HF&RV
Well i cannot think of where that is,....the black steel fence in the background looks familiar ,like a City of Montreal tyoe fence similar to the one around the old Acqueduct Bldg's at the Montreal Water Works,.......?? you can't see the fence I was thinking of,.but Remember if you went along Joseph St.......the long black fence .......blah blah blah ..............other than that I cannot place where this is...........HF&RV
Hi Dianne (HappyDi2) ! You’re absolutely right for the location and the historical description. (Former Lasalle Coke). The parking lot is at Angrignon Park. Another thing: do you remember the sticker in the low right hand corner of the windshield ? It was quite popular in those years. JM
In repy to 904 JM The bakery was Marathon, who also had one at 3rd & Wellington before Grover's went into the corner. I don't recall the King George Restaurant there, I thought all the Restaurants with Royal names were on Wellington at Rielle, 3rd, 5th (Tasse's) etc. Anyway HF & RV Gordo
Hi Gordo (maroonvet) ! I well remember King George Restaurant on Church Ave (east side) I think btwn Gertrude & Evelyn (not sure); they then moved on Wellington. Some merchants had their first business place on Church then (with prosperity) they joined the nec plus ultra select club on Wellington St. Thanks for the infos. JM
JM: My first 'legal' car was a 1966 four door Valiant with a slant six engine. A very tough car that withstood my driving habits (I was 17 years old). My mother gave it to me towards the end of grade 11. I only kept it for about 1 year, then bought another s**tbox. I will post a picture of it when I find the picture. mpu
Hi Ralph (MPU) ! As you posted some photos of Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs church in your album (Ralphies pics), I hope that the following notes will shed some light on that church. The first plan of the church (Joseph Venne, 1905) *** Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs de Verdun (Eglise catholique) Our Lady of Seven Sorrows of Verdun (French Canadian Catholic Church) The church was built between July 1911 and October 1914. Founder of the Parrish: Mgr Joseph Ars챔ne Richard (It is well known that he played an important role in Verdun) Construction : 1911 - 1914 • Joseph Venne, architect • Louis Labelle, architect • Omer Rondeau, contractor • M.T. Lessard, mason • Paquet et Godbout, contractor • J.-P. Dupuis, carpenter When I was a kid, I was intrigued by the name of that church: SEPT douleurs (SEVEN sorrows). Here are some notes on Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs. The devotion of The Seven Sorrows of Our Lady began in the thirteenth century. The purpose is to recall the Sorrows the Virgin Mother of God endured in compassion for the suffering and death of her Divine Son. The Seven Sorrows Rosary consists of seven Hail Marys For each of the seven Sorrows. 1. The Prophecy of Simeon 2. The Flight into Egypt 3. The Loss of Jesus in the Temple 4. Mary meets Jesus Carrying the Cross 5. The Crucifixion 6. Mary Receives the Dead Body of Her Son 7. The Burial of Her Son and Closing of the Tomb http://catholicism.about.com/od/fact1/f/f7sorrowsofmary.htm *** Another interesting thing is the importance of number SEVEN in history. The Seven World Wonders http://ce.eng.usf.edu/pharos/wonders/ The number SEVEN is one of the most significant numbers in the Holy Bible. http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~stevenha/7list.html Thanks for your photos ! JM
Hi Ralph (MPU) ! This time, I should abstain myself ! I know what this building is ! *** Source: Author: Ralph (MPU) VC Pictures , Ralphies pics http://groups.msn.com/VerdunConnections/ralphiespics.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1445 Thanks for the pic, JM
Hey Les_F In answer to your question . What store was on the North West corner of Wellington and Woodland ? It was I .C .U . Sweets here is a picture from 1959 . The family that owned and ran it owned the whole block , from Wellinton to the lane . It also housed Hemlock Taxi and Woodland Ambulance . They later stopped running the store and it changed stores quite a bit after . It even was a Beauty Salon . Here is another pic. of me and a friend taken in the entrance of the store earlier in the 50's .Sorry Les for the late resonse , been busy.Steve
Sounds familiar JMH,.....is it the little street near the old ammunition factory off of Lasalle Blvd......( You know where I mean ,don't you).......almost at the very end of Victory Lane ,.....but across Lasalle blvd ..........BTW Did you know that there are some houses (or at least were some houses) in Quinn Lane that 'have' address's.....the lane btwn Rielle & Gordon (northsideof ) Verdun Av if memory serves me correctly one of the address's is '10' I think I Remember one of those old Blue Address Plates........Remember those they were on almost every house in Verdun.........I think they were Blue with white Numbers on them.........HF&RV
Hello Les ! I think you refer to either Brassard St. of Gibbons St. in the east of Verdun. These street are very small but they both have addresses. Ranges of addresses: Brassard St : 505-599 Gibbons St: 508-598 I well remember those old blue address plates. Now everybody has his own personal address plate. We have a neighbor with no numbers just letters. JM
Les, here are 2 maps of a sector in the East of Verdun with relatively new streets: rue Henri Duhamel, rue de la Poudri챔re, boulevard du Cerf-Volant. JM
JMH .......could it be the street that was mentioned the other day as a cross street of Leclair ....then CrawfordBridge........is it Penniston.....since most of Penniston runs through into the park ,it could be that the houses on it are the sides of the houses that are actually on Crawford & Leclair.............is this the case by any chance........? HF&RV BTW there is a Penniston St in Ville Lasalle as well ,...
Rue de la Poudriere is an old street that has been renamed, I believe. It's the area surrounding the Lasalle metro station and I can still remember how the area streets ran there before the building of the metro. There was a very large company there back then...anyone remember the name of it? Or the name the street was before it was Henri-Duhamel? And that Rue de Cerf-Volant has always been there it just was never given a name. It runs right along the outskirts of Therrien Park. It was given that name ever since Verdun began hosting the annual Kite Festival. Cerf = kite.
Isn't that where the old KIK Cola building was? I think the name of that street may have had something to do with the name the area is called for election purposes.
I think you're right about Kik Cola in that area Mags. I was asking those questions because I don't know the answer and wondering if anyone else knows if I'm remembering right. I thought there used to be a big paint factory there, no? And I KNOW that Henri-DuHamel was named something else...it's driving me crazy that I can't remember what it was.
lmao, Sharon. Henri-Duhamel street used to be know as River St. It ran from the boardwalk and ended officially at Rushbrooke (where the entrance was to the ammunitions factory (CIL?)). River & May streets ran parallel. I think they just tore down the buildings, paved and continued the street. I recall in one of the buildings they used to sell winter "ski" jackets at wholesale prices (White Stag I beleive). Circa 1958-19666. My family used to belong to Bethanie United Church (where I was baptized) corner of River & Wellington. BTW....it was 1 of only 4 French-Protestant churches in Quebec. Mystery solved? HF&RV. Mac
YES!! RIVER STREET!!! OF COURSE!!! Thank you, Mac! Yes...lol...mystery solved. You're right too, that it was the CIL plant, yup. Shew...so I WAS remembering right then, aha! This 45 year old brian isn't failing after all! (too much, anyway) Thanks again, Mac!
I drove thru this area last week, as the Wellington exit from Champlain bridge takes you on "River Street" beside Canadian Tire. I will return to take pictures of the paint factory where one of my uncles used to work. It has been developed into condos or whatever, but the unique triangle pointed roof sections has been preserved. Very nice I thought. mpu

Hello ! Old photo (1922) of a school in Verdun. ... You will remember ... Source: Archives de la Société d’histoire et de généalogie de Verdun (SHGV). JM
The only way I recognized Woodland School in that pic was by the long windows in the corner. I'm trying to get bearings as to what part of the school that NOW is....is that what we knew as the Annex on Verdun Avenue between DesMarchais and Melrose, do you know?
Yup, I'm well aware of that haha Just before I moved to Virginia my youngest daughter was in grade two at Woodland. Plans were in the making that school year for St. Thomas More and Woodland to merge and they had a contest at the school asking kids to suggest a name for the new school. My daughter entered, suggesting Verdun Elementary and was one of the 4 or 5 kids who won the contest. The first name picked won a brand new computer system and the others got 50$. Should have seen my then 7 year old daughter's eyes pop when she opened the Congratulations card and there was a 50 dollar bill in it hahahaha. The TV news and Verdun Messager were there at the contest winners ceremony at the school, I still have the VHS tape and clipping from the paper...lol. Soooo...my daughter had a HAND in giving Woodland School it's new name!
Woodland School was my first school. I was a little french girl, starting in an english school. (1939?). My teacher was Miss Baumforth, and she swam as a mermaid. I remember her showing us a picture of herself with her fish tail on. Anybody else remember ??? Jackie
Sharon, the name Woodland is still present on the official websites of the Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) http://www.lbpsb.qc.ca/ Verdun Elementary 610 Desmarchais Verdun, H4H 1S6 Tel: 514-767-5344 Principal: J. Brady-Merola http://www.lbpsb.qc.ca/eng/Schools Woodland Elementary School: http://verdun.lbpsb.qc.ca/ Last Modified/Derni챔re Modification: 12 July,2005 According to these websites, both names seem to be in use. JM
Sharon, Mr. Elliot, late of Verdun High, taught at this school. The Livingstone's, Sonny(later taught at VHS), Dennis, George, Inez, et al, were notable attendees at Rushbrooke. My 2 cents worth. Sonny Martin
Wow JM I'm surprised that the school board is still using the school's old name aren't you? I know they probably wanted to make it a gradual process so everyone got used to the new name but you'd think after 2 years they'd be using solely Verdun Elementary...
Sunny, do you mean Mr. Elliot who we affectionately called "Mr. Blue" because he always wore blue suits? He was a really nice guy, was my guidance counselor too.
Hi Mark, Yes John was the youngest of the 12 Livingstone children. I knew oldest to youngest. Attended the funeral of their mother a couple of years ago in Montreal... John is now in Los Angeles doing very well in computers, I believe........Sonny Martin
Hi Sharon, Yes the one and only......he taught me at Rushbrooke then came to VHS in late 50's I believe. I spoke to him on the fone last year but am having difficulty reaching him now............Sonny
Sharon if you are referring to the picture that only shows when it was first built it was the original section on the corner of Melrose and Verdun Ave.
Hi Brian (BPL4719) ! Do you know if the first phase (1922) in the construction of Woodland school (ref. to VY 978) entirely occupied the northern section of Verdun Ave btwn Melrose & Desmarchais ? JM
Hello ! I have just found the answer to a question asked a week ago (Ref.: VY No 897). It was indeed a bank that first occupied the building located on the SW corner of de l’Eglise (Church) & Verdun Ave (522 de l‘Eglise): The Bank of Montreal. In 1944, Albert Gauthier, a coal merchant, bought this bldg from Royal Trust Co and rented it to the City of Verdun for $125. per month. Source: GRAVEL, Denis et H챕l챔ne Lafortune, Verdun, 125 ans d'histoire, 1875-2000 Soci챕t챕 de recherche historique Archiv-Histo Inc, 318 pp (2000). ISBN 2-920480-68-5 p. 243. *** Actual occupant: Resto-caf챕 chez Anas 552, rue de l'Église, Verdun, QC H4G 2M4 JM
It didn't extend to Desmarchais it was just the section on the corner of Melrose and Verdun Ave. and ran half the block I believe it was extended to Desmarchais later.
Hi Brian (BPL4719) ! Thank you for the infos on the physical development of Woodland School. Here is a pic showing the actual state of this school (Building No 9). Source: Excerpt from the Map of Verdun (2000) JM
I went to Woodland school from the second half of grade two untill the end of grade eight. VHS had grade eight in the Woodland Annex unless you took music courses, then you had to go to the main building of VHS at the top of Argyle. The teacher that most impressed me was Allan Shatzky in grade seven. We were "guinea pigs" for a new type of teaching system which would later be implemented in a whole new school on Shevchenko street in Lasalle. Keith School was the first school to use this new system. I don't remember what was "new" but I do remember Mr.Shatzky as being a very kind, pleasant person. Does anyone else in this group remember this project? Other teachers that I remember are Miss McEwen, Miss Coveyduck, Miss Wyatt, Wolfgang Boinke. The principal was Mr.Stewart. I think I have some kind of certificate from Woodland School.......will try to find and scan...................Ralph.
My guess is they are both buses..........................................am I close? hahahaha ( I recognize the first bus, as being similar to that one I posted a few weeks ago,.......at the corner of Woodland).............I can't tell you the year,..but I do recognize it...............................HF&RV
JM: Either the Classic or the early Novabus, Come to think of it, they might be the same. When I first saw the Novabus plant in St.Eustache a few years ago, I seem to recall that it had another name, but I do not remember what it was. There are still some of these busses around Montreal and Laval. Ralph.
JM: This is definitely today's model of the Novabus. Fewer seats, very uncomfortable, Note the huge wheel well covers, with a pointed top to discourage kids from sitting on them. Two steps in the back to go up to a higher level, where the noise of the engine drowns out any other sounds that there might be. A very poorly designed vehicle in my opinion. But then, my opinion does not usually count for much.mpu
To all railfans, subway fans, and bus fans ! Some answers: Post 1009: GMC New Look Post 1010: MCI Classic Post 1011: NovaBUS LFS Have a nice weekend ! JM

«Oldest ‹Older 801 – 1000 of 1419 Newer› Newest»Hi Ralph, My Mother lived in an apartment on the corner of Bannantyne & Gordon early sixties through seventies.
Thanks Sharon for the recent photos of the 2 red-tops (also known as kiosque or pavilion) JM

Hi Cookie3773 ! Is it possible that a new store was opened by Currie’s on Verdun Ave just east of Woodland in the 50’s ? JM
JM, Could be one of the other Currie Brothers opened the other store, I only recall the one on 3rd and Verdun ave, upto 1956 .........then moved to Allard and hung out at Kosta's for what seemed like a lifetime at that restaurant............. later, cookie
Hi Mom1945-Linda ! Yes, I well remember those straps as a former member of the MTC "straphangers club". Some of those straps had no special handle others had porcelain handle. We should create the ASHCMTC. « Take good care of the porcelain » Thanks for the pic. JM
Verdun, June 19th, 2005 ... JM
Siighhhhhhhh what a nice pic, JM. The riverside is really different now, isn't it?...but nice, really nice! Judging from your photos JM, I think you and I took much the same walk along the boardwalk and river haha. This was one of mine near the river...About June 26 or so
It was probably taken down when the Statium was to build, check this photo Sharon Galt and Lasalle Blvd.South Weast corner.
Hey does any body remember Mary Jones. Here's a pic. of her and me accoss the street from where we lived on Wellington and Woodland West side . It was taken in 1962. Steve
Hello ! Do you remember this bldg in Verdun ? JM
JMH was this on Church Av.?..........
This message has been deleted due to termination of membership.
I think I may have gotten an 85 or 90% for spelling correctly,.....However there were a few mistakes...........hahahahaha HF&RV

Hi Les, Sharon and Bob ! Les, thanks for all the history. Yes, it was a bank (which one ?), then the municipal library, after that ...? I think the present occupant is Restaurant Chez Anas 552, rue de l'Église,
Verdun, QC
H4G 2M4
your half right La Moderne Woman's store which later became the
bakery is directly across from the empty space and as far as I know there
was never a bank at the corner of Church and Verdun but there used to be a
bank at the corner of Church and Wellington which is no longer there and I
believe it was the Bank of Montreal.
This message has been deleted due to termination of membership.
Does anyone know what building was in the space where
McDonald's is now?
Good morning Brian (BPL4719) ! It was Verdun Model School ... JM
Somneone please correct me cuz I'm probably wrooo.......wrooooooooooooon.....wrooooooooonggggg ugh that was hard to say. hehe
This message has been deleted due to termination of membership.

Then McDonald’s restaurant in 1969 (my guess for the date) Coll챔ge classique Jean-Jacques-Olier 4300, boulevard Lasalle
Verdun (Qu챕bec) H4G 2A8 Ecole secondaire Jean-Jacques-Olier 4300, boulevard Lasalle
Verdun (Qu챕bec) H4G 2A8 now: McDonald's Restaurants 514-767-7924

Verdun, QC H4G 2A8
JM
That's where it was MaggieMck
Sharon you are not wrong, you are right.
Thanks Jim I really appreciate the pictures I never actually seen the school
but I do know about it somewhat because my mother and her sisters went there
when they were young.
Good Evening Brian!

Ohhhh witty Leslie lol
Hi Sharon ! Good guess , there’s a deer on the cap and it’s a beer. Hint: brewed only in Nova Scotia since 1820. (Tho oldest working brewery in North America) JM
Moosehead Beer

For those who are old enough , may I suggest a tour of the brewery itself...... click on http://www.keiths.ca follow the steps and take a Virtual Tour of the Brewery......... Incidentally MaggieMck....'not Moosehead' but Moosehead isn't that bad had 3 of them the other night at dinner out.......and I didn't mind them.. but this brewery is not Moosehead.........HF&RV
Since I live here in Nova Scotia and love beer, I better get this one...Alexander Kieth's Alpine beer...Dianne

Thanks for the info Jim, by the way Jim do you know what was on
Verdun Ave. between the funeral parlor and the legion before the metro was
built?
there is no more Bank of Montreal on Wellington St. the only one we
have left is on Verdun Ave.
corner of either Beatty, Moffat or Manning however in the old Bank of
Montreal building you are referring to there is an atm for the Bank of
Montreal.
Is it Moosehead beer from New Brunswick. My cousin lives there and we always joked how" The Moose is loose in Canoose" Ruth
Here's the label to go with the website........... ..... http://www.keiths.ca HF&RV
the only thing I can't stand about this beer,...are their comercials........the guy screams too much.....if you've seen them you know what I mean............ HF&RV
JM
beautiful picture thanks Jimmy
Hi Brian (BPL4719) ! Sorry, I don’t know what was on Verdun Ave. between the funeral parlor and the legion before the metro was built ? JM
Hi Brian (BPL4719) ! Here’s what I found on the Bank of Montreal website concerning their ABM (automated banking machine) at 4026 Wellington: VERDUN -- ABM Only 4026 WELLINGTON

I’ll try the Moosehead. http://www.moosehead.ca/ Yes, I visited (limited visit) the Keith’s website (before scanning my cap) at this address: http://www.alexanderkeiths.com/k_brewery/k_brewery_index.htm (I think I should have photographed the beer cap instead of scanning it). thanks Jim for the message I was responding to Sharon who didn't
actually know that the bank branch she mentioned wasn't there anymore.
Address

Art
Hi Art (VerdunReader9) ! Good to read you again ! Your description of the environment is so vivid to me ! In the late 40’s, my mother often brought me with her (from Côte-des-Neiges to Verdun) to visit her mother living on Leclair Ave. The cold, the wind, the snow, the Mack bus, ... Good memories ! Edward Wilson was mayor of Verdun in those years. (In fact, he was mayor from 1939 till 1960). I don’t know if the Knights of Columbus used it for their meetings. In the book* « Histoire de Verdun » by Julien Déziel, one can read that the last occupants before 1976 were the « Crawford Social Club » and the Canadian Legion, branch 202. * available in English. Hello ! Do you know where is this bldg in Verdun ? Now: ******* Then: JM

Hi Betty (Grammah2) ! You’re correct ! The municipal library was there (SW corner). Do you remember what was the occupant before the library ? I suppose it was a bank ? JM
This message has been deleted due to termination of membership.

Danny
The picture sure looks better in the old black & white, without the wires everywhere. Danny
Hi Danny (Dannyb--1) ! I didn’t know that this bldg served as a bank in the 60’s. Thanks for the info. I agree with you on the visual impact of the wires. Also, the street light had a better looking in the old pic. JM

Hi ! Can you identify the place ... and ... if you want ... the car ...where those photos were taken in 1968 ? JM
JM...not sure of the car but was the pic taken near Therrien Park and Therrien pool?
Hello Sharon ! Not in Verdun but very close to Verdun JM
You would have got to work faster in this one JMH ,,,,,,,,,,,,,HF&RV
Les, it was closer to Verdun than the place you described. JM
Hi....I think that picture was taken in Ville Emard near Newman Street it is the old gas works, long since taken down...Dianne
JM
JMH that's where the photographer stood ,to take the picture of the kids playing Tug of War................ HF&RV
Is that Woodland park, where they used to have sing-songs ?
Founder of the Parrish: Mgr Joseph Ars챔ne Richard (It is well known that he played an important role in Verdun) Construction : 1911 - 1914 • Joseph Venne, architect
• Louis Labelle, architect
• Omer Rondeau, contractor
• M.T. Lessard, mason
• Paquet et Godbout, contractor
• J.-P. Hi ! Do you know this street in Verdun ? JM
Looks like somewhere in Crawford Park. Mike
Very interesting, Thanks JM........................................................................R
Hmmmmm it does look like Crawford Park... might also be the west end of Verdun.

Hi Sharon ! Good for Crawford Park ... but the street ? JM
I want to say Monteith for some reason. Mike
Boy am I out to lunch,,,,I meant Penniston. Mike
Hi Mike ! Sorry, but not Monteith (which is not in Crawford Park), neither Penniston (but Penniston crosses that street). Now it becomes so easy ! JM
One of two,,,Leclair or Crawford Bridge. Looking North or south? Mike
I think it's LeClair St. too.
Sharon, you’re right ! It’s Leclair Ave looking south. JM
Here is another pic. of me and a friend taken in the entrance of the store earlier in the 50's . Sorry Les for the late resonse , been busy. Steve
Hi Ralph ! I have just completed the review of your latest photos in the Pictures section, it was a nice journey in Verdun of today. Thanks, JM
Hello ! Do you know a street in Verdun with no address numbers ? JM
Sounds familiar JMH,.....is it the little street near the old ammunition factory off of Lasalle Blvd......( You know where I mean ,don't you).......almost at the very end of Victory Lane ,.....but across Lasalle blvd ..........BTW Did you know that there are some houses (or at least were some houses) in Quinn Lane that 'have' address's.....the lane btwn Rielle & Gordon (northsideof ) Verdun Av if memory serves me correctly one of the address's is '10' I think I Remember one of those old Blue Address Plates........Remember those they were on almost every house in Verdun.........I think they were Blue with white Numbers on them.........HF&RV
for anyone who is wondering why I 쨈haven쨈t been on it쨈s because my computer

JM
Hi Bob ! I will admit with you it is relatively unique ! I don’t know how many houses are located on this street. JM
Is it rue de Poudriere...........................(I just saw that on a map, I never heard of it brfore).........hahahaha HF&RV
Les, there are many addresses on rue de la Poudri챔re. BTW, the street with no address I’m thinking of is 50+ year old.
Les, you are 100% right. Good work ! JM
The other street (Penniston) in Lasalle has many addresses (range: 281-351)
Ahem...that was BRAIN, not brain.....lol.
I mean BRAIN, NOT BRIAN!! Oy vey.....wish there was an EDIT button here hahaha
Its OK, Sharon........my brian fails me on some days too. Mac.
Very nice I thought. mpu
Hello Sharon ! Some infos on the eastern part of Verdun. Actual names (old names) and description for some streets in the eastern part of Verdun: Rue de la Poudri챔re (new street) Rue du Cerf-Volant (new street) Jacques-Lauzon (new street north & parallel to Rushbrooke, link btwn Henri-Duhamel & May) Passage Albert-Denault (new passage) Henri-Duhamel: links Joseph St to the river Brassard (Duhamel) Lafleur (Pacific, Lighthall) Caisse (Treherne) Gibbons (Primrose) River: section of actual Henri-Duhamel, River was west and parallel to May, linking Rushbrooke to the river Upsala: section of actual Henri-Duhamel, between Lasalle Blvd and Atwater Ward: old street, was located btwn Rh챕aume and River. Oh wow! Is that WOODLAND SCHOOL?
Sharon, it is indeed Woodland School. JM
The only way I recognized Woodland School in that pic was by the long windows in the corner. I'm trying to get bearings as to what part of the school that NOW is....is that what we knew as the Annex on Verdun Avenue between DesMarchais and Melrose, do you know?
Woodland School has a new name as of 2 years ago they
change it to Verdun Elementaryin 2003 after 81 years wow
Jackie

Sunny, do you mean Mr. Elliot who we affectionately called "Mr. Blue" because he always wore blue suits? He was a really nice guy, was my guidance counselor too.
Hi Sunny, Did you mean Ivan Livingstone? I went to school with his brother John. Mike

first built it was the original section on the corner of Melrose and Verdun
Ave.
Hi Brian (BPL4719) ! Do you know if the first phase (1922) in the construction of Woodland school (ref. to VY 978) entirely occupied the northern section of Verdun Ave btwn Melrose & Desmarchais ? JM
Hi Sonny, I was a friend of Joy Livingston. If you're still in touch with her please say "hello" from me. Thanks, Walter Ryan
Hello ! I have just found the answer to a question asked a week ago (Ref.: VY No 897). It was indeed a bank that first occupied the building located on the SW corner of de l’Eglise (Church) & Verdun Ave (522 de l‘Eglise): The Bank of Montreal. In 1944, Albert Gauthier, a coal merchant, bought this bldg from Royal Trust Co and rented it to the City of Verdun for $125. per month. Yes it did Jim and it expanded later by the way thanks for the

It didn't extend to Desmarchais it was just the section on the
corner of Melrose and Verdun Ave. and ran half the block I believe it was
extended to Desmarchais later.

I think I have some kind of certificate from Woodland School.......will try to find and scan...................Ralph.
no problem Jim, you wouldn't know when the school expanded do you?
Good morning Brian (BPL4719) ! Sorry, I don’t know the dates of the different expansions at Woodland School. JM.

JM: GM bus, very comfortable I think...........Ralph.
