Sandy, The paper trucks delivering rolls of paper to the New York Times on 43rd Street have to back into The New York Times loading dock. That can't be the easiest maneuver. And yes I did see the polite poll. New York was #1. That is something-Walter
Sharon, when I saw how excited you were about coming back for a visit, I thought, I would make the itch even stronger, so at lunchtime I went to the corner of Gordon & Bannantyne, and took these pics just for you........ ......tell your hubby to bring some vices grips, as the screws have about 25 coats of paint on them.....also, while I was taking these pics, the caretaker of the retirement home came out, and asked what I was doing, when I told him, I think he thought I was nuts, maybe I am, but I went to Bannantyne for half of grade one, and half of grade two, way back when........in case you can't get one of these pole caps, the old VHS gym yard/football field on the corner of LaVerendrye & Egan has the same type of fence, with less coats of paint...............good luck, m.p.u.
About Maislin. One of the best run trucking outfits in Canada. Sam Maislin was number one. The four Maislin brothers each ran a department. Sales; Despatch; Equipment and Personel, but if you wanted a straight answer on anything, ask Sam. Sam told me once at a truckers meeting in the 70's that he invested everything he had in containers and sometimes had to ask his bank manager when he needed a hundred bucks. Unfortunately when he died, the maislin sons trying to get big quick bought 4 companies hoping to expand into the U.S. The yanks out foxed 'em and they ended up in serious debt that they couldn't handle. Baillargon (roughly) was not a large as Maislin but they specialized in very heavy transport. Regulations were for the safety of the country not just the industry. It's risky trying to pass a rig going uphill in the Rockies but when he's haulin' two trailers it's dangerous. Also, the regs created fairness. If a company has a hundred tractors like the little 6 wheel gas job in the piggyback picture they can't afford to suddenly change them all to 10 wheel diesel to compete in the new market. That's why many died a quiet death. It's interesting that after three million miles highway and about five years city delivery and owning at 20 different cars, I don't even have a licence now. I have no desire to own a car or drive anywhere. But, when I pass an idling Mack or White Western Star diesel, I get a whiff of the creature and the yearn for the open road is as strong as it ever was. Ed
Oh my GAWD!!! hahaha You are TOO MUCH, MPU!! hehehe I cannot believe you DID this! LMAO! Yessssss that right there is THE fence post cap that I WILL have in my grimy little fingers!!! It's THAT particular one that I want, no other will do. I went to Bannantyne School for most of my elementary school years and have some very fond memories from it so I want THAT fence cap because it was from the BANNANTYNE SCHOOL yard! I'm very sucky, ok? hehe Thank you for these great close-ups haha Hubby now knows exactly how to make quick work of it! I'll be in and outta there before that building manager even knows we've been!
Sharon, I am glad you enjoyed, I had meant to take a small Canadian flag sticker from work to stick on this cap to welcome you, but I forgot. Just as well I guess, when the janitor came out, I asked if he spoke English, and he said NON, so no problem I told him in French why I was there, but he did not seem interested, a good thing I had parked on Galt, because when he sees a post cap missing, I would not want him to have my licence number. Good Luck with your mission. I will discretely drive by there in a couple of weeks and see how you made out. mpu
Shar, give me the word and I will delete all messages that could be used in a court of law to prove intent to commit an offence. I'll be a character witness for ya when you plead insanity! LMAO! Have a fun trip!
Sharon, Have you thought of switching the old cap with a new one. This would be the honest way of doing things and everybody will be happy. I lived across the street on Galt in front of Bannantyne school and I must have climbed that fence may times in the 40s so it brings back memorys to me as well. Guy
WOOO! Holy hell! And here I thought the gas prices HERE were terrible! About 2.85 US a gallon here now. Usually hubby will wait till we've crossed the Canadian border to fill up but geez this time methinks we'll just fill up right BEFORE we do instead...lol. Exchange rate or no. Thanks for that tidbit of info.
That's a great idea Guy! And I think it's one that we shall go with too! Makes sense to me. If the building manager does happen to come out and I tell him I am just there "fixing" the old fence and putting on a new "fitting", then what can he really say, eh? LOL! Anyone know what SIZE fence post cap I might need?
Sharon,.....check with 'Frost' fence's ,.....at least that 's the name I Remember on all those chainlink type fences, when I lived in Montreal,.....you can probably get a replica,...or same type post cap,.......Good Luck if you break in to the Bell Centre while your there ,..could you try to get me a Stanley Cup Banner from the ceiling,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahahaha be careful on that fence, have fun and remember verdun
Yup I remember them being Frost Fences too, Les. The only thing that concerns me is if that fence is so old that they may not make that size anymore or something, ya know? Unless it's a standard size... Guy...I'm leaving in an hour or so, so you may not be able to get back to me. It is just about 6 a.m. now. ** Well peeps, this is me signing off till July 3rd. I will return with LOTS of pics AND that fence cap, I promise!!! And lots of new memories to hold on to as well. Sorry tho Les, no can do for the Stanley Cup banner...lol. Not this time anyway.

That was a very interesting bit of Verdun History,.....I spent many a dime (originally earmearked for the collection plate) at the candy store near the lane on Willibrord,....while on my way to the church to retrieve a bulletin to bring home as my 'prro' of attendance................hahahahahahah then they started dole-ing out te bulletins only after the mass's .......hahahaah but still too easy to just mungle about in the crowd as they were exiting,....and meander back up the stairs ,....(that's where they kept the Church bulletins,......in that little box on either side of the doors........... ..............hahahahahah psst: head for the light HaveFun&RememberVerdun

UPDATE:OLD BANNANTYNE SCHOOL FENCE STILL INTACT, despite rumours that this fence would be modified by a 'Jane Doe' (the name has been changed to protect the still innocent) as of 2:40 Sunday afternoon June 25th, there have been no changes to what was photographed last week......has 'Jane' given up? or has she waited until she has enjoyed her week up north?, just in case she gets caught and thrown in the old Verdun slammer......guess we will have to wait and see.......................goog luck 'Jane', and I believe 'John Doe' will be helping her perform this feat................more to follow..........m.p.u.
Sandy...if on a Saturday morning you would be walking the Boardwalk behind the Old Verdun Station, you would see who spent Friday night in jail(drunk tank)( Not that I was ever inside). Steve
Yes Winston,...I seem to recall that fish N chip atore as well,......and right on the corner of Willibrord & Wellington (Wellington Street address) wasa jewellry store across from the old Savoy,..and diagonally across from the good old Steinberg's Store,..............I should also mention that until I escaped the grasp of StWillibrords,......meaning when I had to go to church with my Mom,.....she would takes us after mass,....to Gregory's Restaurant, just past Steinbergs on Wellington,......and I could have a strawberry sundae,......or a strawberry milkshake, I found it to be the only 'redeeming' thing about having to go to church............hahahahahaha Funny thing I never was allowed to have 'both' a sundae & a milkshake,..at the same time,........but a 'fountain coke' was Ok too..................hahahahahaha ..............hahahahaha Have Fun and Remember Verdun

I fared none too well. We ended up 25th out of 50 teams. Our worst showing in the last 5 years. Next year I think Puttick and Puttick with be a father/son team and I will be glad to stay onshore and help. It was a very hot and sunny weekend with a wild wind, creating whitecaps on the river. Alberta has had some very wet weather so they opened up the dam to reduce flooding. The current was fast and furious. (No fridges or dead cows floated by this year though) A couple of mean looking thunderstorms made an appearance but only briefly. Aside from some nasty conditions (the same for all) the weekend was wonderful! It's always great to see familiar faces from previous tournaments. We have made some good friends and enjoy the atmosphere. My biggest catch of the weekend was about 3 lbs. The biggest catch of the tournament was a Walleye weighing in at 11.86 pounds. All the fish were returned to the river.
Hi MaggieMck,....So you practice Catch & Release,........very nice,....... Catch & Digest is better,......but preserving stock is the thing to do these days as for the Fish n Chip shop yup it was at the laneway on Willibrord (StWillibrord's church, side of the street) btwn Wellington and the lane,........ I wonder if it is still there? ..... with all the fast food places in Verdun,....it may be long gone...... ..........HF&RV
You can't get a license to run a tournament in Saskatchewan unless it is "Catch and Release". I'm sure most provinces would be practising the same guidelines. With only 50 teams fishing (there was room for 100) a total of 376 fish were weighed in and released over the 2 days. Keeping those fish would have put a bit of a dent in the waterway's walleye population. When we go out fishing for a day with the kids, we do keep some for supper. There is a 5/person limit per day.
Hi Maggie ,we just had a derby here ,not this past weekend ,but a couple of weekends back,........you pay $100 dollars to enter the derby,.....and the top prize this year was $37,000 (won by a guy who owns a fishing & hunting supply type of store here in Victoria,..... Hello Sandy ,....I just finished watching a news channel from Vancouver ,..and the Earths temperature it seems regardless of where we are ,...is a very conssitent 13 degree temperature, ( I guess that's Celsius),....but a whole deeveloppment here in BC's interior City of Kamloops,.has built what they call a "Geo Thermal " bunch of houses and they tap into the Earths Natural temperature,to both heat or cool these homes,...the Developper sold the devellopment to an Energy Company ( I'm assuming a Natural Gas or BC Hydro,.......and they charge the people $35 bucks a month ,...all year for heat or cooler air,....Apparently not far below the surface,either,....so you also don't have noisy "Heat Pumps or the constant hummimg of Air Conditioners either,.......not to mention not having to buy Natural Gas ,.or at least not having to heat with so much electricity BTW Kamloops normal temperatures see it in the high 30's and 39ish not uncommon,......and -29 is not uncommon in te Winter at times,..........and these systems seem to work just fine Guess the Oil Company's or Gas Company's will buy them out,....and claim they don't work that good,......so everyone's back on the Payola..............hahahahaa is that cynical ? Geo Thermal information , from the David Suzuki website: Here's an excerpt : Geothermal pumps draw energy from the earth, using a series of underground pipes. In a council session in August 1966, the Town of Mount Royal passed 20 bylaws in 20 minutes. They boasted that they could have done it in 15 but Mayor Reginald Dawson's chair collapsed and had to be repaired.
In the '30s Outremont, for reasons known best to itself, forced its police officers to wear heavy woolen winter jackets, even on scorching hot summer days.
In 1966 Verdun doled out $104,000 for "an electronic brain" which they boasted "will practically run the city."
In 1963 an Outremont bylaw forbade any gas station from opening within 200 feet of a school, but conversely, no bylaw banned a school from opening near a gas station, leading council to okay a children's school just 25 feet from the pumps.
In July 1968 Roma Food was convicted of peddling rotten meat but appealed and got off on a technicality: the company was headquartered in Ville St-Laurent and Montreal inspectors had no jurisdiction to check their bad meat.
Lachine chose to get tough against a wave of vandalism in a park in the '30s by putting up a sign reading "Persons of good education and morals are invited in this park."
In 1988, Montreal West tried to ban pick-up trucks, motor homes and commercial vans from streets and driveways. In 1962, Verdun tried to tax cable TV, in 1989 Lachine outlawed pit bull terriers and in 1963 Outremont considered banning people wearing short pants. .....................................................Weird Stuff,....Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Some more Verdun trivia stuff: The picture below is of the lifeguard group at the Verdun Natatorium taken in1943. Those full bodied suits were made of wool. When you dove in to effect a rescue you had to be a pretty good swimmer just to stay afloat - they were that heavy. That was the price of modesty in those days. { It may be of interest to note that the natatorium (a diving pool 75' by ?, a swimming pool 75' by 200' and the locker building) was built by what was called the relief program for people out of work duriong the depression of the 30s. It was what was available to the unemployed, of whom there quite a few, instead of the welfare and EI we had later. In Verdun they also built the Auditorium, the local hockey arena.} ...A good shot also shows a few people up on the roof,..........We've all experienced that view ,I would think:..............................................have fun & remember verdun.............................
Wow! Still very affordable! Our indoor pool (they filled in the outdoor one) costs more than 3.50 per adult (13 and up) and 2.50 per child and we only get to swim for 2 hrs a day.

Jimmy Adams Just a note for those who may remember Jim. He grew up on Second (maybe 3rd) Ave. Went to Verdun High, graduated around 57. Spent most of his career in the Westmount Fire Dept. (I think he made it to Chief). Married a Verdun girl, Liz McIntyre. Gave a lot of volunteer hours to swimming. I just heard he had a massive heart attack at his home in Cornwall and is in a coma.. If any one hears anything else on Jim please let me know. Wayne Brien

Is this the same Jimmy Adams who lived first in LaSalle & went to Bronx Park School, then on to Verdun High??? If this is the same Jimmy Adams, his Dad was the Trainer either for the McGill Redmen or the Montreal Allouettes.......In LaSalle I think he lived on 3rd Ave. just above LaSalle Blvd. Well we hung out together in those formative years in LaSalle playing ball on the street, before they created Leroux Park on Edward & Alepin Ave......But, if it not this same Jimmy Adams, my Prayers will go immediately to our Creator on Jimmy's behalf........Please tell him that all of us who Pray are praying for him I am certain.....Junior Waterman........

Fresco,...........JMH..........Guy..........and those who appreciate trams/streetcars etc etcIt seems Montreal is to embark on a real big project to reclaim in the form of Greenspace,....and transform all the old Railway Yards,...and Industrial Sections of the old Montreal Waterfront,........they plan to spemd a lot of $$$$$$$ ,.......but their proposals look really good,. Part of the plan is to Move the Bonaventure Expressway,.....away from the River, and return this property to be used by the people as a beckonning greenspace where you can go to walk or sit or picnic by the River,.....Sounds Pretty Cool............ Lose the buildings and all the roadways,......add some grass.............should look good.................................................... now this shot is Present day view of the Victoria Bridge (not really pedestrian friendlt area,.....but scroll down and have a look at the same Proposed View>>>> Looks like a good idea ,.........what a great compliment to the City, which would have it's Great Mount Royal Park,..........and usable land down by the water: They also have proposed some tram routes in certain areas......... This is a big project to be completed in 3 phases, (so whatever they tell you it will cost ,multiply that by 10,.....and you should be getting close).............hahahahaha afterall this is Montreal were talking about ,....and just the greasing of palms will be (I would think ) rather Hefty..................................... this view would be gone, not a bad idea............................................................................................ This last shot ,you can see the railyards in the Point,...and you can see the traffic on Wellington,at the corner of Bridge St,...............Time for a Change,Remember the long shipping docks along Wellington St from before Center,.....all the way to Bridge Well good Luck to them on this Project, I think it will look great: Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Further to the message RV#9343,....re: the development project along Montreal's waterfront,...and te rejuvenation of some of the old commercial spots,....here's a further transcript of their hopes & intents for traffic etc etc : Objective Provide public transit to remedy the lack of connections between the different parts of the harbourfront. Means Introduce a modern tramway service linking the different parts of the harbourfront with one another and with the entertainment and hotel districts. Redevelop the area around the Champ-de-Mars metro station to make it easier to use for visitors to the harbourfront. Introduce an integrated traffic management, vehicle direction and parking strategy for the harbourfront. more Canadian invention stuff from the front page of MSN today :
Imagine a world with nothing but buttons. Then, thank goodness for the crafty Canadians who invented both the zipper, not to mention a long list of other essentials that would be impossible to live without. Here is but a small sampling of Canuck ingenuity at work. • The Abdominizer • Air hockey: Naturally. • Antigravity suit • Basketball: Invented by James Naismith, of Ontario. • Canadarm: Cleverly named to ensure the proper country received credit, this fifteen-metre Remote Manipulator System is an essential tool on the space shuttle and brings the maple leaf logo to alien life forms everywhere. • Chocolate bar: A fishing trip prompted chocolatiers Arthur Ganong and George Ensor to invent a chocolate nut bar which they began selling in New Brunswick in 1910. • Dental mirror • Documentary film:Canada's Nanook of the North (1922) was the first film ever termed a "documentary." And perhaps, the first film that ever offered you a much-need nap in grade school. • Frozen fish fillets: Believe it or not, it took until 1929 before someone -- namely Dr. Archibald G. Huntsman -- had the brilliant idea to sell "Ice Fillets" to the public. Alberta housewives celebrate by bringing trout in off the back porch. • Fuller Brush Company: Mr. Fuller, the father of door-to-door sales, was born in Nova Scotia. • Ginger Ale: Invented in 1904 by University of Toronto chemist and pharmacist John J. McLaughlin, his "Pale Dry Ginger Ale," featuring a beaver sitting atop a map of Canada on every can, was the predecessor to Canada Dry, still the "champagne of ginger ales" and the perfect partner to Canadian whiskey. • Plastic garbage bags • Goalie mask: Naturally. • Hydrofoil boat • Ice hockey: The first recorded game took place on Christmas Day, 1855, in Kingston, Ontario, when bored members of the Royal Canadian Rifles tied blades to their boots, borrowed field hockey sticks and a lacrosse ball, and hit the frozen harbor. Appropriately, the International Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Kingston. • IMAX movie system • Instant mashed potatoes: As of 1962, spud-loving campers everywhere notice a significant lightening of their backpacks. • Insulin: Isolated by Canadians to treat diabetes. Further in this article 2. More Canuck ingenuity Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Yes JMH I think it looks like a great proposal,....and the benefit to the citizens of Montreal,...and of course Visitors to the City,.would be enormous,...... Is this just a pipe dream,.? or is this something that is defineitly going ahead,..... Have you heard anything along these story lines,.? I hope they get it done,..without the usual political interference & red tape,....but I would also imagine that a lot of property owners consent would be needed,....Although the largest tract of land seems to be the Bomaventure Expressway,......and that is already owned by the Gov't (City),......as many business in the early 60's were expropriated to make room for this Expressway,.....also large tracts of land were Expropriated (and were not needed whatsoever),but Jean Drapeau did not like the look of Griffin Town ,and it's old row houses,...and with his upcoming World Expo,......he just had them torn down,.... However that's history,...and I think the Futre look of this whole area,.really looks promising.......... Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Reminds me of when I was a kid in school ,and when all the grades were in the assembly Hall,.we sometimes sang the anthem,..........I had forgotten those days...........ahahahahaha During the Stanley Cup Playoffs the fans in Edmonton sang 'both' anthems the American Anthem,.....then the Canadian Anthem,.......quite something to hear 20,000+ singing & getting into it,..........and a classy move on the fans at the game to sing the other Anthem as well,...........(sure made up for the few fools who created problems on Whyte Av,.........but it's usually 'just a few' who create problems forthe masses................. Yes the whole site is very well laid out and contains many photographs of the proposed area,..as well as other older pics ,... I imagine the initial proposal to move the Casino from Ile Notre Dame, to the Peel Basin,..was meant to capitalize on the project & perhaps try to be an anchor of sorts,....persoanlly I was glad to see the opposition to moving that Casino into town,....it's far better over on it's own little Island,... amd besides the green spaces proposed wpuldend up as undesiarble place to go ,.if te Casino were to be near the parks,....Crime follows most Gambling spots,. JMH ,Thanks for showing those old routes,.....actually the beige line circa '51,.....seem to be almost what I was trying to explain,......as you can plainly see the Rolland up to Champlain ,left & over to Stephens,....down Stephens to Beurling,.......and then back to Woodland,...........and obviously down Woodland to turn at Transfer Park (Woodland &Wellington),....and then back up Woodland: This 'beige' line as it is so called is very ,reminicent of the route I was trying to relay. My guess is that the route I was thinking of was later in the 60's ,when they regained their senses ,and had a route that actually made sense (I'm hoping that was the case,..as it would be more in tune with the Verdun I Remembered,............one that made sense.........................hahahahahahha Hope I'm right ,if not ,Oh well ,just hope some had the good sense to at least get off the bus somewhere along the 'line'...............hahahahahaha or they'd still be going in circles (but I'm told the Dougie) could get them back on track...........so to speak.........(now relax were just having fun).................................................................HF&RV Have Fun & Remember Verdun..........

Steve: I think we both have the same quirky sense of humour....I find I hold back at times as I am never too sure how some might take it...It takes a lot to get me upset, usually it has to be really insulting but for the most part its like water rolling off a ducks' back. Haven't been there for awhile...Halifax has come a long way over the past 34 years since we moved to the area. Back then there were only a couple of decent restaurants now there are so many. Keep the jokes and the humour going because that is what makes it all worthwhile especially when we are dealing with life and all that that implies. Dianne

I remember that on Sunday the church bells used to toll, and you could time your walk to church or Sunday School so that you arrived in time. Well.......I noticed a couple of months ago that there is an absence of church bells ringing on Sunday.....well around where I live anyway. Perhaps it's all about the money....the cost of repair/upkeep for the actual bells....the cost of building a steeple to house the bells....etc?????? Do they still toll where you live? Cheers.
I Remember that, seemed like every Church had it's Bells ringing,....and they each had a different effect to them ,....You could tell almost which Church was which, I haven't thought of those sounds for years,.....& come to think of it I don't know if they ring around here either,.......maybe next Sunday I'll try & Remember to listen for them,..........maybe we just subconciously do not notice them any more?? Sandy, I thought the Church bells were supposed to ring before the Mass. Tradition was to call people to prayer. We too use incense. Some complain that it creates lung cancer, which is a lot of nonsense. If you use the simple charcoal type, there's no tar or other dangerous chemicals in it. Our Father Slattery has been an ordained priest for 52 years. Sometimes the smoke is so thick during the chanting of the Gospel, I can barely see him at the Altar. Last year when he was in for a checkup they told him his lungs were as clear as a baby's. As far as dress is concerned, neat and clean should be enough. We feel that how you address the Lord is more important and that's why we use the old prayer book with the beautiful language of the King James Bible. My thoughts. Ed

This morning I was at Longueuil and crossing the Champlain Bridge on my way back to Lasalle, I was behind a car with Virginia plates.........I thought ! Sharon must have made a u-turn and is on her way back to Verdun to complete her mission, but the car went right up Decarie expressway, did not detour thru Verdun.......they didn't know what they were missing!!!! Hope you had a great trip!
Sandy, Sometimes the smoke makes me cough too, but mostly, I find it clears my sinuses. The organ is close to the Sanctuary and I get envelloped in the fog. Sometimes I have to wave the smoke away to see the music. The most important thing is that you've got people coming to worship and that the Church is an important part of the community lifestyle. I'm happy that you have enough people for all those Masses. I remember St. John The Divine on Moffat we had 600 families. Services started at 6am. 7am 8am 9:30 sung Eucharist 11:00 am Full Communion 3pm Sunday School (300 Children) and 7pm Evensong. I remember as a kid that even with a full Church Father Dann could spot from the pulpit anyone acting up or dozing in Church, so I joined the Choir, it was safer sitting behind him. Ed
We don't hear church bells here in Nova Scotia. What a pity! We belong to Saint John Vianney in Lower Sackville. We have a large parrish and have many Masses, one on Saturday the rest on Sunday. Our priests say Mass at 2 other churches in the area as well as ours. Our music ministry is fantastic, several different choirs, so if you like modern, traditional or rock an roll we have it all. As far as incense goes it seems to depend on the priest, whether or not he is a tradionalist or modernist. Right now our parrish priest is from Pakistan. His homilies are very interesting, but you have to listen very carefully. I haven't heard any complaints about dress....personally, I would like to see a little less skin in church, but we must not put people off from attending. A couple of years ago we were told that babies would not be Baptized if they were given a non-christian name. And, get this one....no marriages would be performed if the gal and guy were already living together. Dianne
Sharon, it seems they were looking for you while you were away. (LOL) Have you let the proper authorities know of your return? : ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia zoo official says he hopes an escaped monkey is getting hungry -- and will be easier to catch.
Zoo workers are trying to find a Japanese macaque that escaped yesterday from the Mill Mountain Zoo. They say she may be looking for some breakfast after spending the night in the woods.
The furry, light brown monkey is named Oops because the other monkeys at the zoo weren't supposed to reproduce.
The education curator at the zoo says he thinks she is staying in a nearby forest so she can be in earshot of her family in the zoo. The official says searchers heard the monkey all day yesterday as they searched the forest. Created: 7/3/2006 11:06:33 AM Updated: 7/3/2006 11:07:22 AMEdited by Gary Detman, Nightside EP

Talk about something to jog your memory, I was looking in an old Bible in my Dad's things, and came across this bill from Woolco Automotive Department. Dated May 18 ,'72. just a month before I finished my sentence at VHS. The interesting thing about this bill.....I calculated the tax, a mere 8%, and we thought we were overtaxed. Last weekend in Massachusetts, only 5% tax, and not on a lot of items either..........most likely this was the Woolco on Champlain just west of Bishop Power, but it could have been on Taschereau in Brossard, as we went across the river often.....mpu
Some old papers I just found.....a Sunday Bulletin from Emmanuel Baptist Church Thanksgiving 1967, an income tax bill from Sept.1949 from a friend of my Dad's, a decal from the Queen? ....not much more boxes to find things in, but quite an adventure it has been.....m.p.u.

Les, that is quite a certificate, this woman must have been very proud, as are most Americans that I have known, unlike the three pieces of #$%& that urinated on the War Memorial in Ottawa. Thanks for sharing that certificate. Ralph.
Hi MPU,.......she never mentioned it,....and she worked for a Canadian Company in Trail BC,.....they were sworn to secrecy,........she was quite a character, born in Blaine Lake Sask. and played all the sports Hockey ,Baseball,....etc etc ,.....she was my favourite 'mark' cause she loved the Canucks,....and I could usually take her for about a buck a week..........ahahahahahahah I did think it was admirable of the US Gov't to have taken the time to acknowledge the efforts made by some Canadians working in a Canadian Smelting Company,..... I will be framing this old certificate and it will find it's place on the Family Wall we have comemorating all of Teresa's family , As for the 3 young fools that performed for the camera on July 1st,.....I have to appreciate the young 23 year old who readily and sincerly appologized and had the decency to do it on the record,.........a very Stupid Act,.....but the Embarassment ,and public shame ,will have taught him a very big lesson,....and will be punishment enough for the rest of his life...........Hopefully he (& the others) have taught many a lesson in Basic Respect for Property,.........only time will tell I think the press can drop it now, there are far more pressing things going on,.and the Vets have accepted the Apology.........I doubt we can have 24/7 security on every War Memorial in the Country,.............let alone everything else lunatics relieve themselves on: Have Fun & Remember Verdun
What can you expect from young people.? What do we teach them about war and the heroes that won for us. Where do you ever hear O Canada. At my grandaughters graduation they had a girl play it quickly and in a key noone could sing. They did not announce it and she was halfway through before people realized what she doing. I've played for evenings where I always ask if they'd like to close with O Canada and I've been told we don't want anything political. I play it anyway and after they ask, "What did you do that for?" Ed
MPU: Interesting to read Woodland School is now Verdun School. I went to Woodland , Grade 6, because they were adding on to Riverview School and there was no room for Grade 6 and 7, That was the year the King died and I can remember the entire school being assembled in the basement for the annoncement and then , we all sang God save the Queen
Hello RuthArmstrong,..........that is a very neat memory, I was in school when JFK got shot,......and the whole school was let out early, and it had a serious effect on all the adults around us,........Strange the memory's we have,....but I like yours,as I can visualize your whole school assmbelled,.and singing, I also have memory's of all of our grades in the assmbly hall singing "Oh Canada" I think we did this fairly often,.............................Thanks for the memory prompt: HaveFun&RememberVerdun
Sharon ..........where's all the vacation photo's,........and did yur hubby catch some fish?? ............Hope you had a good time,.....but as I've mentioned before I suspect you would have a good time anywhere,....................hahahahah Did you get your fill of all the various Montreal treats? ............................................................................................................HF&RV
Les - I was in school too and we were just about to be dismissed when the announcement came and we were held back - I remember how upset the teacher was.
King George VI was only 56 years old when he died in 1952!!! Yikes!!! I, too, can remember saluting the flag (the Union Jack) at the front of our classrooms and singing, but I don't remember if it was "God Save the King/Queen" or "O Canada". BTW, I must be ancient as I heard the news of JFK's death at work (Bell Canada). The mother of one of the girls I worked with call her and passed on the news, and I remember we didn't believe it and thought it was some kind of sick joke.......NOT. Cheers.

One can't help but thinking of these when remembering the great things about Verdun........ ......and they as good as ever!!!!!
I will discretely drive by there in a couple of weeks and see how you made out. mpu
JUst checked the chat room 9:34pm, and there was no one home.......
Nahhh I'll just plead the FIFTH! And, being a permanent resident of the USA now, I can do that! I think.
HEYYYYYY! I just realized that you you are imply that I'm insane, you (b)witch!! I resemble that remark, ok?
Sharon,.....check with 'Frost' fence's ,.....at least that 's the name I Remember on all those chainlink type fences, when I lived in Montreal,.....you can probably get a replica,...or same type post cap,.......Good Luck if you break in to the Bell Centre while your there ,..could you try to get me a Stanley Cup Banner from the ceiling,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahahaha be careful on that fence, have fun and remember verdun
Sharon, I have one of those caps in my basement. I will measure it in the morning and get back to you. Guy
Sharon....keep the black side down. Have a good time. Steve

Hi maggie,....seems the top prize was $21,000 this was in the 20th Annual Juan de Fuca Fishing Derby,.......this the fishing was not at it best,.....but they still reeled in some good dinners,........hahaha http://www.jdfsalmonderby.com/ this next link ,mentions some of the many different tornaments & derby's on the coast, some reall good fishing ,from the sounds of it,...... http://www.coastalbc.com/fish/derby.htm I still like the old fashion way,....wait till one of my buddy's returns from a commercial trip, and select from Hold,.......hahahahahah don't even have to dress them ,as that's already done HF&RV
Ah Hah (there's that word again),......seems I was right the first time: •Darren Wright of Island Outfitters is another victim of the shock treatment; his fish not only took home the first place prize of $25,000.00, he also managed to collect a “side bet” worth over eleven thousand dollars found further down on the Juan de Fuca site I posted in the previous message $36,000 ,....not $37,000...........that's a lot of Do Re Mi,..........for spending an afternoon fishing:......... Well , quite hot again here,.....and you sure notice it when you get out of the car,or come out of an airconditioned ,.store,.(Cold Beer & Wine Store that is)..........hahahaha but too quickly we forget those rains, and winter weather,......So regardless of what your climate may be these days,.....it's not that bad considering the alternative " Any Day Above Ground ,is a Good Day " . In winter, these systems bring the earth’s warmth up into a building, concentrate it, and distribute it using heat pumps and ventilation systems. Does this event still take place by the river in Verdun? I came across this article ,about a young city concillor (19 at the time, 2004)Who managed to help Verdunput on a festival of sorts ,celibrating with all kinds of sports,tennis,football,volleyball,.....etc etc : Read the letter: as it appeared in the Montreal Mirror,........ Balls on the waterfront Verdun wanted a way to make sure everybody has a ball, so last spring 19-year city council vet Laurent Dugas convinced the borough to put $200,000 aside for the world's only ball festival. "We noted that there was a lack of activities on the waterfront so we thought about putting this on," says Dugas, in a rather excited tone. "There'll be activities with every type of ball, and we'll even be putting up hot air balloons, all on the waterside. There'll be loads of things to do, and contests." The orbs will start being launched around 4 p.m. on Friday, as participants indulge in football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, baseball, p챕tanque and soccer, through to Sunday evening. If that's not frenetic enough, there's a BBQ, an outdoor caf챕, a pool party and free balloon rides Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Plus there'll be musicians and clowns, all of which will culminate in a big show Sunday evening at 8 p.m. on the waterfront near Allard, starring singers Eve and Wilfred. John Gallagher, another Verdun council vet, credits Dugas with the plan and promises to be there. "But I'm not at the age to be out playing sports," he says. To find the festival, look up and follow the balls, or else simply scoot over towards the riverside in Verdun (behind the Verdun Auditorium might be a place to start). Detail freaks can dial 765-7150 or 765-7255 for more. 쨩 Kristian Gravenor Sounds like a good idea to at least invite & prompt all the kids and Verdun residents to come and have (a ball),.....down by the River,..............I wonder how successful it was?.........Seems better than a lot of spending plans by most Gov't's these days,.... In 1966 Verdun doled out $104,000 for "an electronic brain" which they boasted "will practically run the city."
found through Montreal Mirror back copies,.... or here at this link , : http://www.montrealmirror.com/ARCHIVES/2001/022201/news6.html You'll have to scroll down a bit but there's stuff on many of montreal's 'borroughs' or Cities ,as they were once known as: here's a larger portion of the article:basically some real nutty things that were proposed: Other head-scratching suburban moments
Westmount council--known for its all-you-can-drink, mid-meeting wine breaks for elected officials--decided in 1971 to revoke taxi permits of any cab driver with long hair, a moustache or beard.
In Verdun they also built the Auditorium, the local hockey arena.} ...A good shot also shows a few people up on the roof,..........We've all experienced that view ,I would think: ..............................................have fun & remember verdun.............................

Yes Norm, I remember Jim's Dad was a football trainer. I think it was at Mcgill. I will pass your message on as soon as I can establish communications with Liz
Thanks Wayne, Jimmy was one of my good friends & we hung around together
when we were kids....I haven't seen him since around 1953 or 1954.....He is
one of the Good Guys, as I remember him.....I of course didn't know his wife
or family after he left LaSalle....I'm so very sorry to hear about him this
way........I pray that he fully recovers.........Junior W. Please keep us
all informed....
Thanks again......
Norman

Means Introduce a modern tramway service linking the different parts of the harbourfront with one another and with the entertainment and
hotel districts. Redevelop the area around the Champ-de-Mars metro station to make it easier to use for visitors to the harbourfront. Introduce an integrated traffic management, vehicle direction and parking strategy for the harbourfront. There is a lot of info about this project as well as many photos and artist conceptions, available at: http://www.havremontreal.qc.ca/en/index.htm Happy Canada Day, Have Fun & Remember Verdun
more Canadian invention stuff from the front page of MSN today :
Imagine a world with nothing but buttons. Then, thank goodness for the crafty Canadians who invented both the zipper, not to mention a long list of other essentials that would be impossible to live without. Here is but a small sampling of Canuck ingenuity at work.
• The Abdominizer
• Air hockey: Naturally.
• Antigravity suit
• Basketball: Invented by James Naismith, of Ontario.
• Dental mirror
• Documentary film: Canada's Nanook of the North (1922) was the first film ever termed a "documentary." And perhaps, the first film that ever offered you a much-need nap in grade school.
• Plastic garbage bags
• Goalie mask: Naturally.
• Hydrofoil boat
• Ice hockey: The first recorded game took place on Christmas Day, 1855, in Kingston, Ontario, when bored members of the Royal Canadian Rifles tied blades to their boots, borrowed field hockey sticks and a lacrosse ball, and hit the frozen harbor. Appropriately, the International Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Kingston.
• IMAX movie system
• Instant mashed potatoes: As of 1962, spud-loving campers everywhere notice a significant lightening of their backpacks.
• Insulin: Isolated by Canadians to treat diabetes.

JMH That was interesting I just listened to the Anthem,...Sounds like the whole band usually heard on Parliment Hill,.............. However the project still looks like it would be benefitial to all Montrealer's .............................................................................................................hf&rv

Well it's off to Our Canada Day BBQ.////////then maybe down to the boat,.to watch the Fireworks in the Inner Harbour ,.........my buddy's commercial fish boat is usually moored not far from the Johnson St Bridge,......so sitting on it is a nice break from the crowds,........estimated 40,000 for tonight's show,........I don't like big crowds anymore,.....and the traffic will be nuts for a few hours,.......smarter thing would be to get home after the BBQ,......and watch it on TV at eleven................hahahahaha .....................I'll have a toast to all of you VC members ,I'll make it my first one ,so Cheers to you all (give me about 1/2 hr ,....and then listen for the 'salute').............

That's a very scary story,.a runaway train in this part of the country,...would be one helluva scary ride,...through the Fraser Canyon,.......Driving it is one of the nicest drives ,for scenery, and breathtaking,views,......Hells Gate is a tourist attraction along this highway,.and if you've ever been there you know how high up off the ricer you are,.....You don't want to sail over the side there in a car,..much less a Locomotive, with over a 100 Thousnad tons behind you: Thanks for posting the link to the story JMH,......I had heard something about the derailement the other day,but hadn't read anything or heard anything further on it,.........it's a sad story for the family's & certainly calls into question the wisdom of CN ......the whole sale of BCRail to CN has been a matter of controversy since it happend,.......................well written story though,........Thanks Again JMH Usually I would have read something like that,...but missed it till you posted it: HF&RV

Mike: I think I know that restaurant in Halifax.....O"Carroll's down on Water Street...very expensive but the food is or was excellent. Haven't been there for awhile...Halifax has come a long way over the past 34 years since we moved to the area. Back then there were only a couple of decent restaurants now there are so many.
Ed
Sandy, Next time someone complains about someone else, hand him a stone. If he's a Christian, he'll get the message. Ed

>>>>>NEWS FLASH: as of 9:49 this morning the old Bannantyne School fence on Gordon had still not been ""modified""................did Jane Doe decide not to carry out her mission??? ........this message will self destruct in 15 seconds.............to be continued <<<<< HUBBY WOULDN'T DO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT And as he is the driver, I didn't have much choice but to agree...lol. He asked me how high it was. And when I told him I thought I remember that fence-post cap being probably 7 or 8 feet up, he said "Nope, not gonna happen." I WILL get it one day, I swear. Somehow. Some way.

They say she may be looking for some breakfast after spending the night in the
woods.

And by the way, I SAW what your previous message that you deleted said smartass, I just hadn't had a chance to reply yet... Soooooooo....ya think you're gonna get that fence post cap, do ya now? Let this be noted, peeps! If anyone in close proximity of said old Bannantyne School fencepost has the desire to climb and wrestle it off and mayhap want to send it to me hahaha....I will kindly pay the postage and send back a "Kentucky" token of my appreciation! Hahahahaha I GOTTA get it before Maggie! Waaaaaaah I found it firssssssssssssst after allllllll
From October 20, 1984, a section of the Westmount Examiner featuring the RMR, to which my father served 24 years in their reserve, and another 20 something in their legion Branch. I have donated my Grandfather's 303 WWI rifle, as well as many other artifacts to the RMR Museum...... and an ad that many of us can relate to................yummy...m.p.u.
To those of us that went to Woodland school and more or less enjoyed it, take a look at what it has become..... http://verdun.lbpsb.qc.ca/index.htm .....but I guess some of this is necessary in today's more complicated world.....m.p.u.
Anyone using the CHAT these days? It's 7:30 PST .////////10:30pm Montreal time , Jump in if your so inclined.............. HF&RV
MPU isn't it interesting the things people leave behind,...and things they kept through a lifetime........ Here's one thing we found of Bernie's ,......and we've found many interesting things,...but I am always impressed at just how many of Our family members and generations past that had an active roll in the Freedom's we enjoy today: Have a look at this neat old certificate sent to Bernie (Teresa's Mom) from the United States of America "Wat Department" .....Thanking her for her participation,.................. (couldn't seem to add it as a picture ,so here goes as an attachment).....hope it works: We have found many other interesting things as you have,......kind of an insight to a person you thought you knew well............hahahaha Nice to have mementos:

Cheers.
