I was hungry and lazy tonight so I ordered pizza from one of Calgary's most popular pizza chains, Pizza 73. It was a good pizza. But I really miss Montreal pizza. I grew up on Kostas.
When I'm having a bad day at work, my staff can tell because I make myself a "real" pizza.
I'm sure that I'm not alone. What are/were some of your favorite pizza places in Verdun or the Montreal area?

Woodland Pizza
Good Question,.as tastes can change over the years,......Memory's are more forgiving ....... i was in the Lav'y Tavern one night years ago,.and their kitchen was closed,.and so they ordered by ohone for us a Large Pizza from Woodland Restaurant,........................sounded good(it wasn't)........... I did find it not that good at all ( off night, could be).....but We all tout our own little spots where we used to get what we beleived was 'cannot be beat Pizza'..........ahhhh but we've all had those good ones from wherever,......including White's ( I mean Woodland)..by the way Woodlands looks like there trying to be too fancy nowadays,..........where's that greasy little hole in the wall,we all know & love......................hahahaha hf&rv but I do Remember either Popdog or old MPU posting a photo of a Woodland Pizza that looked just right..............mmmmm.
Would have to list Rex's always good Woodland (of course) Mikes ( later ) da Michelle ( Hickson & Wellington) great late night after midnight stuff.... also Trevi was near the top, then slipped a bit,but made a revival & has proven to be a constant in Quality ,rarely differed from it's beginnings...... SecondAve Restaurant wasn't bad either in the late 60's (plus the juke box was cool too.........MagicCarpetRide era) 68-ish??? .................................Don't know about nowadays?...... HF&RV
Hi there, I think Denny Lappos made a great pizza and was open until about 5am on the weekends which was great after a night of partying. He also made the best caesar salad dressing I ever had. I always told him he should bottle and sell it. Wendy
Great subject, Bigfellow.
In my humble opinion, Riverview was good. Kostas was better.
However, by far the best is Woodland. Everytime I make it back to Verdun, I make the effort to see Johnny (In the kitchen) & “Shoot-the-___”. He can tell some great stories from over the years, especially about the die-hard Verduners who will go to great lengths to get their favourite pizza (Fed-Ex Air to Boston, Calgary etc).
After drunken benders, I’ve actually ate their pizza after it’s been sitting on a coffee-table for 24hrs……..Ahhh, good times, good times.
Earl.
Hey Wendythepool
You're right about Dennis Lappos. Great place too.
A buddy & I were in his place one late night in 1981 when 2 "Rowdy" customers (1 table over) began giving the waitress trouble (breaking dishes on purpose). Before my buddy & I decided to intervene, Dennis came out of the kitchen (C/W pizza-sauce laden apron!) & asked these guys to kindly leave. One of the guys pushed Dennis to leave them alone. Dennis actually lifted both guys up with his hands, dragged them outside to the front of the restaurant & proceeded to "Pound" the "S*&^" out of them.
I kid you not, Dennis got a resounding applause when he re-entered the place.
Good times, good times.
Kosta's pizza, Riverview & Woodland. Remember the bun on top? I like watching them throw the pizza dough in Kosta's window. To me, that was pizza making! Hope everyone has a nice day, even tho it's freezing cold at this end. Carole
In the early 60's, I enjoyed the pizza at Orlando's - corner of Wellington & Hickson, I believe. Now,Woodland (with 1/2 amount of cheese), Trevi and Chateau Dorval on Dorval Ave. Ron
Our Church has a wind up party every year for the new members and their sponsors (new Christians and Converts) we order pizza from Papa Johns - couple of locations in Calgary - not bad. There is a place in Kensington that my husband claims makes great pizza although somebody on the radio said that they preferred Dominos - cant believe that. The first pizza I ever had was around 1960 from King of the Pizza by the old Forum on St Catherine - they delivered.
Ha I cant believe this - googled King of the Pizza Montreal and it was 1962 not 1960 and check this out they have gone commercial. http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/story.html?id=6d6ab8e8-34e0-417c-82ff-af6a51a9cf63&k=21339
Hi ShirleyBH2,.that's neat information,.I never knew that the King of Pizza,.had become that large ,3rd behind those other ones,.Not Bad ,.I see they were the forerunner & pioneer of bringing Delivery Pizza to Montreal,..Quite a statement,.... That is the reason a lot of parents in the 60's really hadn't ever had a Pizza,... and aside from cost factors & large family's ,ordering food wasn't something a lot of Our Parents did in those days,.yet it became commonplace amongst us kids,. Thanks for posting that story,......I learn something new each day............................................................HF&RV
It is amazing what we remember when something triggers our memories, like the pizza last night. My paternal grandparents who lived at 1090 Woodland had 9 children (can you tell that they were good irish catholics, lol). So they always made us grandchildren wonderful home cooked meals. My maternal grandparents lived at 1044 Melrose. They always went to Verdun Fish and Chips. My mom would take me to Frankie's on Banantyne. On Friday's after my dad closed the dealership, he would take us for burgers to go at a place on Banantyne. I think it was at the corner of Argyle. I remember that it was on the south east corner of Banantyne. Two or three times a week, my friends and I would run from the school yard at Riverview and go to Kostas for fries and gravy. Sometimes my Uncle Norman would show up and buy all the kids a pizza.
In reference to my previous message, that wasn't written too well. I should have said I loved watching throught at Kosta's through the big picture window at Kostas while they were making the pizza, throwing the pizza dough in the air. Silly me. My brother & cousin & their freinds used to moon the big window too (at Kostas), or so they said, lol. Bad boys! Carole
Wow, bad spelling, I better stay off the boards today! Carole
Hi big fellow, my family lived at 1076 Melrose for years, was wondering your grandparents name?: Wendy
My daughter probably lives where your grandparents lived on Melrose well in the same 6 plex. What I remember as a kid we never ate out but my uncle was a pianist in a night club and would often stop at a Chinese restaurnt on the way home and bring home Chinese - we would get up and eat with him whe we were little sometimes it was Chalet Lucerne BBQ Chicken. It was never the adults ordering from King of the Pizza but the local teenagers pooling their money and ordering pizza on the door step. Now a large pizza comes in the medium size box no more 20 inch pizzas which I think was 8 big slices.
My grandparents were Mel & Isabell Davis. My mom was brought up there, her name was Jessie, I believe that she was VHS class of '55.
Addition to my last post: They moved to Boucherville for a couple of years. After that they lived on Riverview opposite the park below the school. Then at 330 Manning. After that they lived in Westmount until my grandfather died.
Hi there, no I don't know your grandparents.
Wendy, my mom's brother was much younger, Andy. He was in the class of '69 at VHS.
Ate many of Kostas pizza and don't forget good old Woodland's still there and going strong. I go still go there for pizza and I live on the South Shore, Greenfield Park one of the best pizza places.
Bruce, I thought I would reproduce the photos and article wich I posted on the 13th of January on the Woodland restaurant in case you missed them. Enjoy your Pizza, I must try it someday. Guy
hi. ate many a Kostas pizza myself but what i REALLY liked and miss are the Cheesburgers. I remember when we would order from johnny and he would say "cheesbirger..cheesburger".. later when that became famous on Saturday night Live i had to laugh. jd
