Preventative Medicine
Ok , How many of you Remember this stuff........................hahahahahah
I'd really like to meet the person who said "let's take the liver out of this poor cod fish, mash it up, extract the oil, and take it for our good health"!!!!!! What was he thinking???? Cheers.
Those old remedies where actually good for your health. Our mother used to give us a spoonfulll of Cod liver oil regularly and we are still alive, all seven of us, ages from 65 to 80. Even today, nutritionists, doctors etc. are recommending that we eat fish for its good fat content. Guy.
I remember there was another oil - Castor/Caster oil - not sure what it was for - my grandmother inflicted the cod liver oil on my mother and her siblings - we never had it but at school we had a vitamin a day from Sept to April. How many remember that little burgundy iron smelling pellet shaped like a football???
I don't remember a vitamin pill at school, but I do remember getting a cod liver oil "football-shaped" gel type gold coloured supplement at school. And I know that it was cod liver oil....how do I know that.....ummm let's just say I tasted it for the rest of the day!!! Cheers.
Whoa !! this sounds scary,..... "Castor Oil"Dear Yahoo!:What is castor oil used for?Ines Brooklyn, New YorkDear Ines: The greenish extract of a large tropical plant, castor oil has been used for many years to ease constipation and induce vomiting. Basically, it's WD40 for the gastro-intestinal tract. As any Little Rascals fan knows, castor oil is a notoriously ghastly tasting liquid. Yahoo! Health recommends chilling castor oil in the fridge and mixing with cold orange juice before ingesting to make it more palatable. The mind (and tummy) reels. But castor oil isn't just for breakfast anymore. Just ask the folks at Jayant Oil Mills Group of Bombay, who host an extremely informative page praising the mutiple-purpose liquid. To quote: It is somewhat difficult to imagine that, barely a few decades ago, castor oil was valued chiefly as a purgative. Who would have then anticipated the commercial respectability it would attain and the national and international demand it would come to enjoy? This once dreaded substance is now used in plastics, textiles, paints, cosmetics, and a number of inks and industrial adhesives. The site goes on to explain that one reason for the current popularity of castor oil is due to the fact that its numerous chemical derivatives are "renewable sources, bio-degradable and eco-friendly." That said, we still hope you never have to drink it. Here's the 411 on Cod Liver Oil: Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil: One of Your Best Sources for Essential Omega-3! I seem to recall something called 'Neo Chemical Food.' In a brown bottle and thick like molasses. Mother would take a tablespoon and roll a wad the size of an egg into the stuff and stick it in your mouth. Didn't taste too bad but it was no 'Cherry blosson'. Four hours later it would dissolve so you could talk again. I notice my Mother always seemed to give it when I was trying to complain about some thing. Probably coincidence. The other I remember was wheat germ. A pablum like powder cereal that even when mixed with water or milk was dry and awful tasted like eating dry chalk powder. It made you stronger because your body had to fight to survive it. The fact that we survived these wonderful things shows they must have done something. My Father always said, If it tastes bad it's good for you. However the look I got when I suggested that if it's so good let's see you take some told me to shut up before I got a second spoonful. Ed
My mother was a saint God rest her soul, she never gave us any of that stuff. We had toast and milky coffee for breakfast - sometimes porridge with lots of brown sugar and milk or sometimes my grandmother made us pancakes, In the summer we had kellogs cold cereal - usually the variety pack. My poor father ate the boxes we wouldnt eat.

You could probably eat a bowl of anything plain but that doesn't mean it'll taste good. I certainly wouldn't eat it plain...you may choke on it. I use it in cookies and other baked goods. My 9 year old loves the cookies and they have great health beneifts
I would not recommend eating a bowl of Wheat germ as it should be used as an additive. The most nutritious part of the whole wheat is the wheat germ, that is why it is sold separately to be added to other foods to enhance the nutritional value. Guy
Hi: I buy whole flax seeds and grind them in a coffee bean grinder and sprinle two tablespoons on my bran cereal and also add it to muffins etc when I bake. Flax is also very good for you. Dianne
Mom1945linda What was HE thinking? I don't remember any fathers forcing their kids to take cod liver oil. It was the mothers. Probably hoped it would calm their daughters hormones down. That is my story, and I am really going to stick with it. Winston Allison

Hi Winston, Your absolutely correct....it was the mothers who 'forced' kids to take these remedies. I really believe though, that it was a "he" who thought up the whole concept of eating fish livers in the first place. I believe that women are more discriminating when it comes to food . Cheers.
Is there anyone else out there, whose grandmother saved the greese from the Thanksgiving Dinner for the treatment of sore throats. Grandma always sent it home with my mother to be stored in the fridge. We were given a tablespoon of this cold for winter sore throats. Then there was that gray putty like stuff that was warmed and applied to a piece of cotton and put on the chest to "draw out the chest cold" that you kept on all night. I cannot remember the name of the stuff. Never had to endure Cod Liver oil but my my gave us something called "Scotch Emolution" in the winter. Not a home brew but purchsed in the Pharmacy. I seem to recal the label having an orange border withblack print and a fish. Ruth
Hi Ruth, Could this be the product you're talking about? It sounds vaguely familiar, although my Nan's best medicine was a teaspoon of branch in some warm milk, and a hot water bottle. Cured whatever ailed you. Cheers.
Sorry...forgot the attachment..... 1.1 First thing in the morning drink a desert spoon full of SCOTCH EMULSION (I like the orange flavour). By the way, it alledgedly also helps for arthiritis. When a cold front is on the way, or everybody around you starts sniffing, also take some at night.
Linda. Sounds like the same product . I don't recall that it tasted like orange but didn't taste that bad. Do they still make it?? Since you said about liking the orange flavor. Back in the 40's and 50's medicine never had fruit flavors. Ruth
Ruth, Sorry didn't mean to mislead you, I just googled "Scotch Emulsion" as that's what I vaguely remembered, and this site came up. Don't believe my mom ever tried to get us to take it, but somebody in the family must have used it as it sounds so familiar. But you're right, nearly all medicine back then wasn't nearly as palatable as it is now-a-days. Cheers.
Linda. You are right. It is usually a man that comes up with "female" products or items. It was Howard Hughes who came up with the bra for Jane Russel(?) to wear. No complaints here though. MEN!!!!!!!!!!!

..or just a plain old glass of GingerAle,....wheen you were sick, always said to 'settle your stomach'I don't know if it worked,..but we thought so as a kid,Remember when you were sick,,,,you didn't want to eat anything (or couldn't) ,,,,,,and a glass of GingerAle seemed to go down (......and stay there.................hahahahaha)
Yes Ginger Ale. It did seem to work huh. I remember hot tea with lemon and honey for the chills of a fever. Terrible sick days but now I look back with nostalgia. Great thread. S.A.
With my dad it was always ginger ale (remember Gurd's Ginger Ale) but with my mom it was always coke that she had let go flat ...not sure why she let the fizz go out, and boy was it ever sugary, but it always stopped us from upchucking when we were sick. Cheers.
If we had sore throats, my nan used to rub them with Vicks and wrap them with a ladies nylon stocking. Why???? Another cure was a hot poltice. I used to get boils on my legs and the cure was to mix bread with milk, heat it on a spoon with a match and apply the resulting hot stuff to the boil. No wonder the boil disappeared....it literally burned off!!!! Funny now that I think of it, but I still have some of the scars. If a parent was to do this in today's world, they would probably have been brought to court on abuse charges, eh? Cheers.
,,and How about 'Nose Drops'...........that stuff with the little glass dropper,it would burn a hole through a steel plate I think,.....but you could breathe right after getting the drops,.We also had eye drops,............couldn't hold your eye open ,so your Mom or oldman would do it.............hahahahahand Remember that old palstic tube of "Dristan Nasal Inhaler".........now that stuff cleared your sinus'sand Vicks Vapo Rub ( I think someone mentioned this already).............................................We sure had a lot of 'cure all's
I mentioned Dristan Nasal Tube inhaler,......but maybe it was this oneDoes anyone Remember,if there was a ;'Dristan' or am I really thinking ofVicks?????
Les I don't remember a Dristan Inhaler but I certainly do remember the Vick's inhaler. Today here in Fl. if a kid had one of those in their pocket in school it would be considered contraband Ruth
Yes I guess it was a Vicks Inhaler,.then ,as it even sounds right saying Vicks Inhaler Remember the Vapo-Rub was really strong stuff,........but all that stuff seemed to work,..... but I wonder why the medicines of the day were so strong scented,....?? Even in the summer time when you got a Sunburn,......Mom always had a jar of Noxema,.................and that satuff you could smell a block away........hahahahaha
Here are some of my mother's solutions to cure our ailments, such as: A small block of camfer wrapped in a cotton rag and tied with a string around our neck and under our undershirt to relieve colds. (I have gone back to this) Mustard and/or oats on our chest and many others that I can't recall. They seemed to be just as effective as modern medecines used today. Guy
Also Remember using something called 'WitchHazel' to alleviate mosquitoe bites or stings,.....(and I Remember it worked,good),.......... the Camphir (mothballs),were also used to keep moths away,....but it also works to keep wild animals ,...(for use at your cottage,or whatever) it keeps them away: Skunks ,Racoons etc etc,......(and it too works) Crazy old Rememdy's..............maybe had more merit than ,the so called new medicines,............... ...

Hello Guy ,here is a definition of Flax,....it was also called by farmers at one time ,rapeseed,.or related also to Linseed,........but no they are not Hallucigenic, Farmers hated the stuff at one time ,as they didn't make much money from the area it took up to grow,......but then it came into it's own,.as a dietary fibre, and also oddly enough contains omega acids(I thnk it is) Flax. There's been a lot of talk lately about this seed. Little wonder when you consider it's rich in dietary fibre and omega-3 fatty acids.
Scientists agree that flax is a significant component in a healthy diet. Nutrition recommendations state that omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintenance of good health, normal growth and development.
Flax has a delicious, nutty taste and a unique blend of nutrients. high in dietary fibre rich in omega-3 fatty acids (an essential fatty acid) high in vitamins and minerals - particularly potassium .................hope that helps a bit,........
Now I have deleted the post about rape/flax because I was a little confused. "Rape" is better known as Canola. Flax is Flax is Flax. It is Flax that has tough stalks, a delicate perriwinkle blue flower and smells "familiar" when Burned off. Canola has a bright yellow flower and the seeds are used to make canola oil and birdseed.
I wonder what happened to 'Dodd's Kidney Pills" 'Carter's Little Liver Pills and I can't remember which one advertised 'relief from pain of sciatica.' but I'd sure like to find that one right now and see if it works. Ed
A quick aside, when we 'rescued' our little dog...Sophie the Pomeranian...from a backyard breeder she only had 20% of her fur left. I feed her flaxseed (which I grinded in the coffee grinder) and added to her regular food, and boy she's just gorgeous today. Here she is:
Hi MaggieMck................i just talked to a friend of mine today ,who used to grow Flax,......and they used to eat it directly ,like sunflower seeds sort of.,& it was also known as Linseed ,but not the 'rapeseed' as we 've since determined......... Your becomming a good prairie girl now Maggie knowing all that stuff, Have you found the Wildwood Weed ,that let you take a trip and never leave the farm.??? (Jim something or other)..........hahahahaha I'm slowly becomming a laid back Westcoaster...................................with Montreal roots...........................hahahahhaha
Hi ShirlyBH2, Doan's pills struck a bell so I looked it up and it still is available for back pain at night and also has an added ingredient for inducing sleep. I was surprised, I figured that was a product long gone. Ruth
Advertising must have been more effective back in the 60's and 70's. We vivdly remember products that where aimed at "old people". Do you think the ads were catchier or are there just so many now that we stopped paying attention?
How about getting a scrape or a cut,..and then you got the 'red stuff' either Iodine,.or what was the other stuff ?? Mercuracone(sp??) whatever it was ,one of them would sting,..and the other didn't (I think Iodine didn't sting, but I'm not sure)............and then you got to have a 'bandaid',.......which was great till you had to take it off,...........Remember when a bandaid actually did 'stick' to your skin,.....and you had to pull it off 'as fast 'as possible so it wouldn't hurt(sure Dad,,,,,hahahahaha).................those bandaid's had a glue that would take the paint off a steel pole..............hahahahaha
Remember years later Bandaid's commercial,"I am stuck on bandaid's ,cause bandaids ,stuck on me"......................................oh sure now your all singing it in your head, aren't you.......................hahahahahaha
BTW: if you are singing that jingle in your head,.......don't blame me,blame Barry Manilow,............that's who wrote it...........hahahaha he did write a lot of commercials,..........funny he never did one for 'Nasal Spray'.........................hahahahahaha
Also Remember ,after spraining your ankle (youch ,that always hurt), from stepping in a hole in the lane or the park,or rounding the bases, and your ankle flips over,.........blah blah blah......... but sometimes your Mom would get out the old 'stretchy bandage' about 150 yards long,........and wrap your ankle,...the bandage also had that little metal clamp, that just held the stretchy together,.........Here you go:................this one must be for the rich, cause I only Remember having 1 of those clamps, (or did they have 2??)
Linda. If your memory is getting that bad, the heck with a teaspoon of brandy. Have a snifter full. If you get plastered, you won't remember it... Winston Allison

Went to the Doctor for my back pain. he gave me some pills that are 100 % codeine. Good news is I have no more pain. Bad news is I can't get this damn smile off my face. Ed
nothing like a few 'Percodain' (sp?) to make you feel alrightI took some years ago for a back ache (car accident) However I took one ,while I was playing pool & having a few beers,...and after an hour or so I thought they were not really working,So I took anotherYahoo,.....when that kicked in,.......my pool game seemd to falter...........hahahaha I won't do that again,...............
I recently got a cortisone shot in my thumb. It hurt like heck for 2-3 days afterwards. One little girl told me "They make it hurt like that so that later you'll think it feels better....but it doesn't". Not till later did I realize that cortisone is a steroid....so I'm waiting to get big muscles and a beard......lol Cheers.
Got a chuckle out of this one. Wellllllllllll.......it's a kind of preventative medicine, isn't it? A six-year-old boy told his father he wanted to marry the littlegirl across the street. The father, being modern and well-schooled in handling children, hid his smile behind his hand. "That's a serious step," he said. "Have you thought it out completely?" "Yes," his young son answered. "We can spend one week in my room and the next in hers. It's right across the street, so I can run home if I get scared of the dark.." "How about transportation?" the father asked. "I have my wagon, and we both have our tricycles," the little boy answered. The boy had an answer to every question the father raised. Finally, in exasperation, his dad asked, "What about babies? When you're married, you're liable to have babies, you know." "We've thought about that, too," the little boy replied. "We're not going to have babies. Every time she lays an egg, I'm going to step on it!"

Les, I took Prednisone for 12 years to control Rheumatoid Arthritis. I ended up with what they call mid body bulge which is a nice name for a big belly. Steroids enlarge the muscle you exercise most. Which for me was the Diaphram. I found a natural med from Sierrasil in Vancouver. One pill a day controls my pain and swelling. Thank God I am finished with Prednisone. Ed

Ruth
Oops that should have been the Thanksgiving Goose instead of dinner Ruth
Hi Ruth, Could this be the product you're talking about? It sounds vaguely familiar, although my Nan's best medicine was a teaspoon of branch in some warm milk, and a hot water bottle. Cured whatever ailed you. Cheers.
Sorry...forgot the attachment..... 1.1 First thing in the morning drink a desert spoon full of SCOTCH EMULSION (I like the orange flavour). By the way, it alledgedly also helps for arthiritis. When a cold front is on the way, or everybody around you starts sniffing, also take some at night.
Egads.... Should read a teaspoon of brandy....guess I should go to bed, I must be very, very tired...or forgetful. Cheers.
Guess I should try some of Les_F's remedy.....cod liver oil.....it seems to cure everything...even tripping fingers on the keyboard.

What about just plain old Homemade Chicken Soup ....................supposed to cure everything..........
..or just a plain old glass of GingerAle,....wheen you were sick, always said to 'settle your stomach' I don't know if it worked,..but we thought so as a kid, Remember when you were sick,,,,you didn't want to eat anything (or couldn't) ,,,,,,and a glass of GingerAle seemed to go down (......and stay there.................hahahahaha)
Cheers.
,,and How about 'Nose Drops'...........that stuff with the little glass dropper, it would burn a hole through a steel plate I think,.....but you could breathe right after getting the drops,. We also had eye drops,............couldn't hold your eye open ,so your Mom or oldman would do it.............hahahahah and Remember that old palstic tube of "Dristan Nasal Inhaler".........now that stuff cleared your sinus's and Vicks Vapo Rub ( I think someone mentioned this already) .............................................We sure had a lot of 'cure all's
........they had tablets too I see,......................
I mentioned Dristan Nasal Tube inhaler,......but maybe it was this one Does anyone Remember,if there was a ;'Dristan' or am I really thinking of Vicks?????
Les I don't remember a Dristan Inhaler but I certainly do remember the Vick's inhaler. Today here in Fl. if a kid had one of those in their pocket in school it would be considered contraband Ruth
there were other inhalers...i dont remember dristan, but it's possible.. but vicks inhaler is like heinz 57 ketchup
Everyone is always looking for a thanksgiving goose. Here goosie goosie!!!!!!
Get today's hot entertainment gossip
Guy
Also Remember using something called 'WitchHazel' to alleviate mosquitoe bites or stings,.....(and I Remember it worked,good),.......... the Camphir (mothballs),were also used to keep moths away,....but it also works to keep wild animals ,...(for use at your cottage,or whatever) it keeps them away: Skunks ,Racoons etc etc,......(and it too works) Crazy old Rememdy's..............maybe had more merit than ,the so called new medicines,............... ...
I have an old Minard's Linament jar that says also very good for horses carbuncles. Ed
could it be...MEN ARE SMARTER...just kidding

i forgot about noxema....yikes, i could still feel it
on my neck and chest for sunburn..//ugh
Dianne, Isn't flax an illusionegic drug (have I got the word right?) and what are the nutritional benefits ? Guy
Flax has a delicious, nutty taste and a unique blend of nutrients.
high in dietary fibre rich in omega-3 fatty acids
(an essential fatty acid) high in vitamins and minerals
- particularly potassium .................hope that helps a bit,........

No need for a long story ..........Just the Flax Mam, just the Flax
Wasnt it Doan's pills for the back????
Hi ShirlyBH2, Doan's pills struck a bell so I looked it up and it still is available for back pain at night and also has an added ingredient for inducing sleep. I was surprised, I figured that was a product long gone. Ruth
Advertising must have been more effective back in the 60's and 70's. We vivdly remember products that where aimed at "old people". Do you think the ads were catchier or are there just so many now that we stopped paying attention?
How about getting a scrape or a cut,..and then you got the 'red stuff' either Iodine,.or what was the other stuff ?? Mercuracone(sp??) whatever it was ,one of them would sting,..and the other didn't (I think Iodine didn't sting, but I'm not sure) ............and then you got to have a 'bandaid',.......which was great till you had to take it off,...........Remember when a bandaid actually did 'stick' to your skin,.....and you had to pull it off 'as fast 'as possible so it wouldn't hurt(sure Dad,,,,,hahahahaha).................those bandaid's had a glue that would take the paint off a steel pole..............hahahahaha
Remember years later Bandaid's commercial, "I am stuck on bandaid's ,cause bandaids ,stuck on me" ......................................oh sure now your all singing it in your head, aren't you.......................hahahahahaha
BTW: if you are singing that jingle in your head,.......don't blame me ,blame Barry Manilow,............that's who wrote it...........hahahaha he did write a lot of commercials,..........funny he never did one for 'Nasal Spray'.........................hahahahahaha
Also Remember ,after spraining your ankle (youch ,that always hurt), from stepping in a hole in the lane or the park,or rounding the bases, and your ankle flips over,.........blah blah blah......... but sometimes your Mom would get out the old 'stretchy bandage' about 150 yards long,........and wrap your ankle,...the bandage also had that little metal clamp, that just held the stretchy together,......... Here you go:................this one must be for the rich, cause I only Remember having 1 of those clamps, (or did they have 2??)

Ed
nothing like a few 'Percodain' (sp?) to make you feel alright I took some years ago for a back ache (car accident) However I took one ,while I was playing pool & having a few beers,...and after an hour or so I thought they were not really working,So I took another Yahoo,.....when that kicked in,.......my pool game seemd to falter...........hahahaha I won't do that again,...............
Watch that stuff Linda,...Cortisone & Prednesone (sp?) are nasty stuff,...if you have to keep on taking them,.....
lol not to big i hope

Les, I took Prednisone for 12 years to control Rheumatoid Arthritis. I ended up with what they call mid body bulge which is a nice name for a big belly. Steroids enlarge the muscle you exercise most. Which for me was the Diaphram. I found a natural med from Sierrasil in Vancouver. One pill a day controls my pain and swelling. Thank God I am finished with Prednisone. Ed
could be bad for the liver those pills
