In the forum picture, notice the "newspaper" vendor's shack on the corner?  Is there anywhere today that still may have this type of newspaper vendor?   I also noticed the angle parking.  At the left of the pic I see a vehicle of some sort that looks familiarly like the "Smart" car of today....just a little bigger...lol.   Sure do love the black and white photos.   Cheers.

Kudos Les_F    That's exactly the colour I remember the old streetcars.  I loved the back of these streetcars as they were sort of rounded and the seats went right around.  The seats could also be switched (sort of like train seats used to be) so you could face the other seat.   Maybe one the guys might remember, but was there a bell of some sort that the conductor rang as you got to a stop?   I have a booklet that I found at a second-hand book store eons ago, right out here on the Island, of all places, called "Remember Montreal's Streetcars!" printed 1971 but the pics are all in black/white or sepia, so having the coloured streetcar is wonderful.   Thanks.

Sandy, Yes, I knew Lorna Jenkins...you're right she did go to our church.  I used to go to church very religiously until I was about 15, when I found out about boys (who I might add were catholics...we were Anglicans) so church sort of fell by the wayside.  Like Dianne said previously, there was a real struggle of who was going to be saved and who was going to the "HOT" place, so I decided right then and there that my religion was in my heart and not in my head.   That's been my golden rule ever since, and hasn't steered me too wrong.   Cheers.

Linda. Someone once said to Mae West when she was seen wearing a lot of diamond rings, and necklaces, "Goodness, where did you get all that diamond jewelry?"

Her response was; "Goodness had nothing to do with it!!!!"

Another thing she said was: Good girls go to heaven, but bad girls get to go everywhere."

Hi  Guy,..I think it was Gary(Arbutus) ,who commented on one of the photo's posted ,about the HBC on the top of a building here in Victoria BC,.....and he mentioned ,that he hoped they would do something decent with the old building, and that it (the Bay building) was standing empty, since they moved into, and took over the Eaton's Center (we had an Eaton's Center, here in Victoria,.that was originally taken over by Sears, when Eaton's went Bellyup,.and eventually the Bay took over the Sears space in the old Eaton's Center,....and the name was then changed to the Bay Center,......but it's still more commonly known as the old Eaton's Center, I do not really know what is inthe old Eaton's Building in Montreal these days??

This picture was taken earlier this year by my cousin who was visiting our homeland. Any members on this board attend Connaught School, Ville Emard/Cote St Paul?  Then you'll remember this photo.  I understand that it is no longer a school.    I remember one winter day getting my tongue/lips stuck on this darn fence and having the principal (Mr. Deathe) come out and pour warm water on the pole so I could become unstuck!   I also remember when the built the Dominion Store across the street, and walking in the foundation hole, which was full of water with a thin coating of ice on top, and falling through.....was not a pretty sight.   Egads, the memories, eh?   Cheers.

mom1945-linda MSN said...

Winston, I know what you mean about the walking part.  I lived near Connaught School and went to VHS.  I used to walk that walk 4 times a day.  I hated the school cafeteria so I used to go home for lunch.  The school board figured I didn't live far enough to get school tickets for the bus.  I think in many cases today, the children are chauffered back and forth by parents....and that may be a good idea.  With all the kerfuffels going on (shootings, kidnappings, etc.) guess we are all a little paranoid and a lot more careful than when we were of school-age.   Cheers.

winnie3ave MSN said...

Linda. I don't know if we were more innocent, or less informed. With the news being broadcast 24 hours a day, i t is hard not to be informed. If we don't hear the news, there is always someone asking if we heard the news about such and such. It is beyond me how many perverts are out there. Maybe there were a comparable number, and we didn't know it. Good or bad, I don't know. They say ignorance is bliss. Maybe in some cases that is good. In others maybe not so. How many of us have said; "If I only knew then what I know now". Winston

Les. They really did a great job of clearing the street of snow. They were efficient and hard working. They got right to it in most cases. Other times they were overwhelmed because of a big storm. I remember them dumping that snow into the river. I think that was why they did a fast job. The dumping area was so close. Can't do that any more.

Hi Winston,..you know ,before I typed te word carton,I wondered if I was just guessig on that,.as the very early 60's (for me at least) cartons would have been rare indeed,....and I Remember the milk at home was always delivered in Glass Milk Bottles,........so maybe I should have said bottles,..? it seems to make more sense to me to,now that you mention it. As for memories ,you've got that right too ! it's kinda neat to Remember some of these childhood things,... I also Remember ,that ,we always kept our eye on the lookout for the milk truck,.cause the race was on as soon as it was spotted, and if you weren't at the front of the line then your milk wasn't as cold............hahahaha One of the tricks was to offer up your swing (people waited their turn for a swing),.and if you saw the milk coming ,you would jump off the swing and say to a kid nearby ,here you can have it,...this took one kid effectively out of the race,.or at least put them a few steps behind off the mark.........hahahaha Yes,Winston, the Memory's are a blast,.................

Ed. That was my first full time job. Canada Paint, which belong to Sherwin Williams. We used the second and third floor of that building at the Atwater tunnel. When I first had to go to the building across the yard where they were making the linseed oil, I though I would just choke to death because of the strong smell. After a few weeks I got use to it, and it did not bother me anymore. Winston Allison

Winston,  I forgot to mention that ,the quicker you got,& polished off your milk,....the quicker you got back to your 'pick' of the best swing (not the one that always swang 'crooked' )..............hahahahaha but there was always a hard time to get the 'stilts' as the bigger kids usually got them first,.....oh well ,that was the pecking order ,till you got big enough to win that race too !  ..............hahahahaha

les__f MSN said...

After it's productive years,it sat rather derelect for a while,..I wlaked past this building many times in the mid to late 60's........(I would get off the bus ,and walk over towards Domtar buildings on Mullins Street to work in the oldmans shop).......I would always look for the cover the world sign ,to get ready to get off the bus, just outside the tunnel   .........Cover the World ..............

My guess is that photo dates back to the early 30s. Also, I'm wondering what intersection that is. One way to find out is  from the architecture of the building that may still be there even today. Can anybody identify that corner. Guy

les__f MSN said...

The sidewalks there are quite wide,...suggesting nearer to Woodland or west of there,........I seem to recall the sidewalks being a lot wider there, now I think there was a photo of Verdun & Woodland posted a few months back from a different angle,.but those 'granite' blocks should be very recognizable, seems they used Granite for headers aboove all the windows and doors,.... is this the same corner,..this picture is posted from 'touchy' album   the title is 1950 Harley & Ron,..........from 'touchy 826' compare it to the other photo and see what you think ?  I out for a bit so I will check the consensus a bit later.........

les__f MSN said...

No definetly not that corner,.....one quick look and you can see the difference,... Oh well your turn...............hahahahaha

If i am not mistaken the building on the corner where the bus is
crossing is The Royal Bank of Canada that use to be situated on the corner
of Woodland and Verdun Avenues.

Les,   The photo of the horse drawn wagon and the old jalopy also had a store front of the Fabien Pharmacy. The 1935 Lovell's listed four H.P. Fabien Pharmacies at 3681 & 3879 Wellington and 5561 & 5705 Verdun Ave. Seems to me that I remember the Fabien Pharmacy name while growing up in Verdun.   Gary   downtown Saanich, BC

Hi Gary , based on that info (snart thinking BTW),...the 5500 address would be btwn Egan -Woodland,......and the 5700 would be btwn Beatty -Osborne roughly,..........So my guess is that it is looking towards Woodland ?

Nice picture of the South-West corner of Desmarchais and Verdun Ave.  Does anyone remember the furniture store that used to be right on the corner.  It was owned by Mr Mclaughlin (? spelling).  He was there in the early 40's and we bought furniture from him in 1965. He had given up the location but would order in furniture for you.  We still have the tables he sold us.. Great quality...

I don't remember the store - but according to the 1945 Lovell's McLaughlin's Furniture Store was at 5200 Verdun Ave.

I remember the furniture store. It was across the street from Woodland school. The part of the school on Verdun Ave. was the girls side and the back side on the lane was the boys side. They kept us separated. The office and gym joined the two buildings. The Provigo and Handy Andy building was just a vacant lot over to Melrose Ave I think Dominion was before Provigo

Re Desmarchais and Verdun Ave picture.  That storefront to the left of Provigo used to be a restaurant, Miss Verdun (I think).  It was run by a Greek family. The father was Kostas and there was a son and daughter who also worked there.

Yes Les, The doorbell. Do you remember what many people did when the doorbell rang? They reached out the door and pulled the cord that ran down the stairs to the doorlock. Most of these were removed when Verdun became more dangerous. Robbers would reach the the mail box with a coat hangar and pull the cord to get into the staircase where they could work unseen.      Ed

Those plastic seat covers were a real P.I.T.A. when wearing a mini-skirt.  They were unbreathable and your legs stuck to the plastic when you tried to slide across the seat to the other side.   But take a minute to digest this.....the seats in those cabs looked absolutely pristine but meanwhile the outside of the cab rusted away.  Do you think there was a 'seat heaven' where those old seats got recycled?  I mean, heck, they looked brand new.   Cheers.

Les. The Montreal Stock Exchange was on the groung floor of the original building on St. Xavier. The Canadian Stock Exchange we on the second floor. Both exchanges had seats that were owned indepdently of each other. When we moved to the Place Victoria location, both exchanges were on the same floor. I was just wondering if you had found any independent information on the Canadian exchange.

Inside info is a good thing if you don't get caught. And of course being from Verdun, no one would ever brag about "being in on the ground floor" so to speak. Will keep you posted. Will have to us some kind of code. It will have to be something that is foreign to everyone except those that are in the know. Like supper was very good when I visited the folks at Donner Pass, EH!!!!!!!

Winston....you're joking, of course, aren't you?????   I thought I was going to be invited to Donner...ooppss....Dinner.  Of course, now I get it, it's a code word (or sentence).  Just wanted to remind you to save me the leg as you promised.  Thanks.              He's making a list, checking it twice .    By the way everyone, what list are YOU on?    Cheers.

Linda. This is on the Q.T. as we use to say. The second part to that insider code is you have to ask "How was the food". The response will be; " I don't know what they served, but it was sure good. It tasted just like chicken".

December 3rd ,2006............................Verdun's first snowfall ?   Doesn't look like that taxi is for hire yet ?

bombog2004 MSN said...

What a great photo, Les . . .   of the winding steps filled with snow in "Verdun's first snowfall?"!    I'm curious, sir, was it taken on one of the avenues between Verdun Avenue and Wellington, or between Wellington and LaSalle Boulevard?   Jack
