I well remember the Savoy theatre ... we used to get a "big kid" that could pass for 16 to go in and open the side door on Willibrod I think, and let us sneak in... we would then buy 5 cent bags of Duchess potato chips ... lol
I also had two old maid aunts who owned the Fifth Ave. Theatre ... Noreen and Sylvia Kelly.

Dave, you are correct, it was Muriel. Sylvia is another aunt. They later moved to California, I am still in touch with my cousin Debbie.
Tom I remember the Fifth Avenue theater very well. There was a very
pretty but troubled teen, who lived above the theater. I could be wrong
though. I never visited her apartment although we were on friendly
terms. Her name is Diane Bogo (sp) about my age. I always wondered if
she finally found true happiness -- I really hope so, she deserved it.

Duchess potato chips...hmmm..ever find the little metal round staple they used to close or hang the bag, in your mouth??.
Does anybody remember the name of the potato chips that had a picture of a man fishing on the front. They may have been called "Laurentide", or then again, perhaps not!! They were totally greasy. Then there were the little bags of "hickory sticks". Gee whiz, can you tell I was (am) a junk food aholic. Cheers.
Hi Mom1945-Linda, You are right. They where called Laurentide. As a kid my friends and I called them fisherman chips. The last place that I know that sold them was on the roof.of the Nat. And the hickory stix can still be bought. I had some the other day and they are still really good. Dannyb-

I can remember when Cherry Blossom's cost 25 cents. I used to take my brother's wagon over to the Steinberg store on Monk Blvd in Ville Emard and deliver groceries so I could supplement my weekly allowance to buy them once in a while. My mom would give us 10 cents a day for treats and being the chocoholic that I am would buy my other favorite bar...."Caravan" by Lowney's....but mostly I would gorge myself with 10 - 1 cent bags of chips. :-) Cheers, Linda

I can recall that one of my favourite treats was McIntosh toffee, cost a nickel I think so only bought that when I felt rich and hid it from other kids so they wouldn't say "bits on ya"....
Sometimes we'd buy a 1 litre bottle of Kik cola, also 5 cents....

Funny you should mention that! I was at a wedding in Vancouver recently and brought a few bars back with me. I keep them in the freezer so it only takes one good whack on the counter to break off the perfect bite size! I have also made rice krispie squares using MacIntosh Toffee instead of marshmallows! I just love it!

Hi Margo ... some time back I mentioned Cammie Smith and you replied that he is still around and hanging around a restaurant on Bannantyne ... not sure that this is the same one I know as he is ten years older than me and I am close to 65. Black Babies.....God how I Hated those....my parents owned a variety store, corner of Bannantyne & Allard....and I hated the teachers at Riverview who would order 25 cents worth and I'd have to spend 15 minutes counting them out!
