Hi there, Don't know if anyone remembers the discussion we had about why we left Montreal. I'm writing a piece for an anthology coming out next year with the theme "How I Got Here." ie., from Montreal to Edmonton. I am thrilled with the opportunity to write about why 250,000 Anglophones left Montreal during a period of much upheaval. Some of the stories shared on that thread were pretty powerful and then suddenly the topic was diverted to something less serious. Too bad. There was one remembrance by a member about living near St Hubert airport when Laporte's body was found and her home was invaded by armed soldiers. The imagery stayed with me for days, and I want to incorporate this scene in this anthology, and so I am asking permission for its use. I believe it came from you, Linda, so please say yes that I can share your experience with others here. I will not name you but say the quote is from an ex-Montrealer. I enjoy the fun remembrances of Verdun and the potent connections in mourning lost members, giving support to ill members, and celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in all its definitions. But the things that connect us more than anything, I think, is the shared truths, good or bad, and the War Measures Act was one of them. No one could ever say that living in Montreal was boring! Let's also hear about some of the heroic stories of survival. What are we afraid of? I suspect though the theme is more about having fun in Verdun. That would be ashame, because it would be such a loss of rich experiences. Dolly
Sabby, Absolutely, you may use the story. I guess why it is so fresh, in my mind also, is that much was going on in my life around that time. My grandmother, bless her soul, died in September 1970, the Laporte incident was in October 1970, and my daughter was born November 20, 1970. Armed soldiers, full military dress, jumped out of army trucks, pounded on doors, scurried through every closet, through every room, never uttering a word, never answering questions and left without closing the door on their way out. My home wasn't the only one invaded, they descended upon the whole neighbourhood. Yup, the "War Measures Act" up close and personal! Cheers.
Les, If my memory is right we squeezed through the bars on the fence to go tobogganing. The gates were kept locked in those days but it looked like someone had taken a bumper jack and spread a couple of bars big enough for kids to squeeze through. The towers in the picture are the gate of the filtration plant at Atwater and Joseph. Ed
You know Ed ,......I don't know if it's wishful thinking,.....but seeing an opening in the fence ,seems to ring true to me,....I almost think there were a few of them,as the fence ran along the perimeter of Joeseph St,....and then curved around towards Bannantyne,................I'm just not sure.......but I sure like the thought of any Verdun kids beating the system to have fun on the property.............hahahahahha "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Hi Mom45. these were the buildings near Atwater along Joseph ,the Acqueduc's property,......I am still trying to find a good picture of those Four Towers ,at the Lasalle / Lachine end/start of the Acky.............. (I will find one .............hahahaha) Maybe we will all have to chip in and get Ed a camera,....and he might become Our resident photo historian,.............afterall he has some good recall on the bacjground of these places....................Whatdya Say Ed ,...........you & kungfu could ride around and be Our Eyes & Ears of Montreal..............................Jimmy (kungfu) is an expert at giving a detailed description,of any road trips he makes through Our old Hometown.................................................... "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Hi Les ! Do you remember this building of the Aqueduct of Montreal (on Atwater just before entering Verdun) There was a dam in front of that bldg (I think it is now demolished ?) with the water coming over it. This bldg of MLHP is on the other side of the street http://www.imtl.org/montreal/building/Montreal-Light-Heat-and-Power-Consolidated.php More images of the Aqueduct of Montreal http://www.imtl.org/montreal/building/Aqueduc-de-Montreal.php and an icon of Verdun: http://www.imtl.org/montreal/building/eglise-Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs.php JM
Dolly, Sorry, I was too young when we lived on Joseph street to remember the Dussault family. I must have been 5 years old when we moved from Joseph street to Bond street, now Évangéline. Guy
JMH some great pictures available at those links,...I have seen some of them before,....but definitly a few new ones (to me at least),.....I love seeing those old pictures ,the Atwater property was a real classy looking place, with the buildings always looking very stately,.and the grounds trimmed perfectly Glad you posted them.........I'm still trying to find a picture of the 'Four Towers' at the other end of the Acqueduc ,......I can picture them in my mind,...as soon as Edbro had mentioned it being called Four Towers,.....I immediatly Remembered it: If you come across a picture of them ,by all means post it up (Four) us SVP. hahahahaha "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
How about this place ,....it employed a lot of people in it's day,....and probably still has quite a few : ........................................................."Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
I'm just guessing but I think the first building is either the Lenoir building on St.Antoine St., Originally called the RCA building many great artists recorded there. Or it might be The Northern electric building on Shearer street. The second brings teh name MacDonald Tobacco to mind. St.Antoine I think. Ed
Well were on the right track towards finding those Four Towers except ,we need the photographer to turn around and look towards the other direction, hahahahahah Maybe one of Our members here has an old photo of the area in question? If you do ,we'd love to see it: "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
yup I recognize the spot, and have been by there many times,..i think I have a similar picture somewhere, Thanks for posting it,.......................it's very close to Quebec Smoked Meat now that should give it away hf&rv
Have any of you ,had the opportunity to take this trip through the Rapids .............looks like it would be a lot of fun: but it couldn't possibly be as 'interesting' as doing it in a 14' boat with a single motor on the back....................hahahahahah also Remember 'Rock Island'...............always liked that place, you could swim on the downstream side of the rock,...as the current was interupred by the little island, but that was a treacherous current if you got caught in it: anyone interested ,in looking into these rides can check out their site: http://www.go-montreal.com/saute-moutons/index.html Have ................................................looks like a lot of Fun and Remember Verdun >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
not positve where this is,........and I'm not trying to rush the cold season,......but it looks alot like Crawford Park type homes or the ones on Brown Blvd closer to Champlain................just thought some of you may like to see it: ...............I came across it ,while still searching for those elusive Four Towers, ............................................................................have fun and remember verdun
A little closer again,........I'm getting there....................hahahahahaA nice shot st Sunset................................................ havefunandrememberVerdun
Ok ,this one is for Our Cote St Paul ,members,....it's a shot taken from Eadie St,............and shows those old familiar 'clothslines', I like the shot,.and I Remember having to climb the shaky old clothsline poles in Verdun ,..to put the line ,back on the 'pulley',.........Remember those days,......the pole was probably 60 years old ,when I was a kid ,.and the nearer the top ,they got real skinny, and swayed nicely too:.................................hahahahahaha Hope you like the pic: ...............These are the newer poles obviously,....but the idea is still there:I guess most people didn't really have the room in the house for a Dryer, Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Remember the old advertisements painted on the side of brick buildings? They were actually kind of interesting some of them,.Here's one advertising Nuggett Shoe Polish, another sign I Remember seeing quite alot as a kid was Black Cat ,cigarette's,....and also Remember "It " shoe polish,.......... of course there was the rgular SweetCaps,....Coca-Cola,........Star Weekly.........ec etc ........Oh yea ,every corner store had that Bar to open the Door ,so you didn't push on the window,......and it would advertise 7 Up,...........or KiK Cola,........maybe the odd Orange Crush,.......or Nesbitt's ................"Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
My goodness....IT shoe polish!!!! I had a pair of white buck shoes (all the rage if you were part of the 'in' crowd) and I can remember making the mistake of polishing my shoes with IT, which was a real no-no, as they then resembled white leather, instead of buckskin. Egads......all these suppressed memories. I wonder how long the book would be if we were to write down all these memories. Cheers.
Better start writing Mom45......it was you (I believe ) who advised to talk to all our freinds & relatives ,to gather all the info they have ,so we can share it: So start unsupressing your old memory's and start typing...............hahahahahaha BTW was " It " shoe polish the one that you painted on with that little ball of fluff that was attached to the screw off lid?? .......I think it was, I do Remember though that to get the best shine on your shoes, after using the old Nuggett wax type polish ,..was after you used the brush,....you got an old nylon from your Mom or sister,...and used it to 'bring ' up the shine: Anyone Remember that,... In anycase ,.slightly off the topic of this message on shoe Polish,....unless you polished your shoes to go to the Movies,..I just came across this old shot of the Snowdon Theater...............(how's that for bending ,& segway'ing back on track.............hahahaha) this picture is from modern times,......but I do have an old one somewhere,.too,....but this will do: :Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
I will look that up Guy5479,........but I suspect, now that you mention it ,...that you would be right,....it does have that Art Deco look ( I never thought of that before) the refer to the Natatorium as being Art Deco as well,......but the Snowdon sure rings true on that description: HF&RV
Hey check this out they actually have traffic lights at Galt & Wellington now,......that will at least give the pedestrians a fighting chance now to get across,........I used to ride my skateboard (early ,early 60's) around that corner, and lift up the board to sort of do a wheelie,.......thought we were pretty good,.....but nothing like what the kids can do today ,.......mind you our boards weren't to flexible,& didn't have those huge wheels they have now either................hahahaha Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Ok one more Blast from the past,........Many of uss who have backgrounds from Griffintown ,Point St Charles & Verdun,......will Remember this old building. "Hogan's Bath" ......................Now I have to go start the BBQ ,...for Our supper.....( so I have been reminded).............hahahahaha "Have Fun & Remember Verdun" that's a few pictures for today,........but I will still try to find those Four Towers,if I have to post a picture of every Montreal building I can find...............hahahahahah
Okay, people, I need to know: Where was the picture on the "Welcome" page taken, and what is the significance? As my mom used to say....."Enquiring minds want to know.....". Cheers.
It was taken at the corner of Henri Duhamel and Wellington. It is a former church and was a topic of conversation a few months ago. I was in the area and thought it would be an interesting photo. "Art" is a matter of perspective.
Thanks Maggie. I thought perhaps the building was a museum just by the "different" building construction, but church, yup that's the style. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Cheers.
Hello JMH I couldn't sign on earlier today,...so I could not answer you till now,....but I cannot see a picture,.assumming that you had posted a picture for me to see,.....but I also notice that lot of the pics I posted yesterday, are loading ,but very, very slowly,..not sure why?.........but what was the area that you thought I would know well? .........................................................................................................HF&RV
MaggieMck great picture in the old park,.....I would not have thought, that the old cement drainage tubes were still around,....especially multi-coloured like that,.....They haven't changed since the early 60's,..............Great Photo,......the big test we used to have as kids was being able to hop up on top of the tube (without help),......every year we tried,.til we could do it................hahahahaha Thanks for posting that photo, it's good to see./////////Is this the park on Desmarchais???
The other day we were taking about the 4 towers. And I have received several pictures of the 4 towers from Ralph aka MPU.......Hope they bring back good memories. Enjoy!
Thanks Dianne and Ralph. That is the pump house. I don't get out that way often so I'm not sure what's there now. Someone suggested getting me a camera to take pictures but I don't drive anymore. With the bus schedules we have here a car is an uneeded luxury that I can live without. I've driven anything and everything on the road. Let someone else have a turn. My grandson does drive and has a camera and if anyone wanted a picture of a certain place we would be glad to oblige. Ed
To which ,I would have to agree ,a Great Big Thanks to MPU for sharing these pics,.....and Thanks to HD2 for posting them,.......they are great,......Nice job & Congrats to both of you,......We Appreciate your Input,.........always have: ................"Have Fun & Remember Verdun"....................
Hi Chris. I was back to Crawford Park at the same time you were for a visit.. . I have been away, living in Kelowna BC for over twelve years. I grew up on Foch Cresent. My house backed onto Fayolle. I also was impressed how good Crawford Park is looking after all these years. I went to school with Wayne French. Chris Sutherland, Stan Z Dave Martin , all from Fayolle. It is so good to hear stories of Crawford, because it was a wonderful place to grow up in, and has left me with many great memories. Joyce Pedder
Hi Les ! The photo with the rainbow was Vancouver. I hope you can see it now. You‘re right, some photos are very slow to load, some are even absent (I never see these pics: RV: 9876, 9877). Do you receive these pics ? Thanks, JM
Hi JMH I still cannot see the picture from your post,.....and some of the ones I posted ,just are not wanting to load,........the ones you asked about are one from Eadie St in Cote st Paul, (of a back lane ,clothesline in the pic,as well as some homes) the next one you asked about is the Acqueduct at Sunset ,taken from the Crawford St Bridge looking West towards the Ville Lasalle end of the Acqueduct, I am noy sure why the pics won't load,....I may have to try them again,..but they did work fine the day I posted them,...I may just try again rather than get rid of the actuall whole msg I'll figure it out: Thanks for the post anyway ( whatever it was...........hahahahah) HF&RV
I said it before Maggie, we are all brothers and sisters with Verdun as our Mother. That can never change. I too, thank Dianne and Ralph for the pictures. Not just one but every side of the building. I'm willing to try to rake pictures but no one could replace this man's talent. Ed
Hi Les ! The photo I posted (RV 9886) and you can’t see: Vancouver: photo by Catherine Normandeau http://www.pbase.com/catnorm/image/57977639 Would you post the URL of your pics in posts: (RV9876, 9877) (one from Eadie St in Cote st Paul ant the other from the Acqueduct at Sunset ,taken from the Crawford St Bridge looking West towards the Ville Lasalle end of the Acqueduct). Many thanks ! JM
JMH I am trying to find the two pics in question,/. BTW I did look at the picture you posted of Vancouver,.....certainly a nice shot : here's one address: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6947/2019/1600/sc00087544.jpg this one is the sunset,at the Acqueduct: the other I beleive is further down ,the same page,...you have to scroll through a few people pics,...and you will get to one from Eadie Street backyard: when i tried to post a direct link,I recieved an error page,...perhaps the pics I posted cannot be posted ,but they were there the other day??? Good Luck ,...and thanks for the link to that other picture "HF&RV"
montreal is having a bad week for aircraft,........ I just heard that a small Cessna has crashed near the StHubert airport,...everyone Ok ,with a few injuries, but at least their alive, couple this with ,the landing on the weekend of a small aircraft downtown (Park Av I think it was) That sounded like they ran out of fuel:so the pilot just selected a spot and put that one down safely, No idea what caused today's mishap yet? HF&RV We had that happen to us in my buddy's plane here on the Island,....we were over a lake up island ,talking on the headset,& filing,...when the engine sputtered and stopped,........Ross very casually concentrated on what he had to do,..and seconds later ,the engine sprang to life,.....and we continued on,..... We flew for a minute or so,.and Ross came over the intercom to ,explain,....that ,thaat was known as blowing a tank......... The tanks are in the wings,.and it was a matter of switching over to the other tank,..seems we ate up fuel,a little quicker than anticipated (climbing ,.head wind ,.whatever) and he fugured he had another 10 minutes or so before switching over,......it was all done ver smoothly,......but it is interesting to say the least when the motor stops..............what was that ,that Art used to say "Yikes"...............hahahahaha have fun & remember verdun
Sorry I said Cessna,....but apparently it is a Piper Warrior ..........this is a Piper Warrior,....it is (or at least I heard it is ) upside down on a street,..with one wing clipped off:........................I'm no aviation specialist,......but I'm certain,..."that's not a good thing".......................................................................................HF&RV
Hey it's that time of year again,.already,.....the Habs are playing the Leafs ,as we speak,...and the game is tied 2-2, at the end of the second.......... I know alot of you may not be hockey fans ,....but by the same token some of us are,..and this is good news,.........hahahahaha one week from tonight ,the Habs will take on their other rival,..the Boston Bruins, Jimmy (Kungfu) will most likely be taking his Grandson to a few games this year, and can be Our resident Hab Updater............hahahahaha HF&RV

Rielle at the corner of what I beleive is Verdun,.......DannyB if you see this picture look at that cem,ent coloured bldg,...on the far corner ,..You Rememeber what was there, I'll bet: Hope this picture shows up,I am seeing it right now,but some seem to be not showing up,..........................So Here you go for now: "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Right Again JMH,........and yes it was billboards ,.DannyB & I and our friends used to climb these old signs ,....it was an empty lot for many years,.as that building there now does not look that old,.......Man that was empty in the very early 60's and who knows how long before that ,That's close to 50 years,if this building is new,... hahahaha that's a lot (pardon the pun),....but that's a 'lot' of taxes collected for many years,.unless this property was owned buy the City of Verdun "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Hi JMH I would also guess that this cement bldg. is actually on Rielle,.althoguh it looks set back from the street quite a bit,....but if you look at the structure, there is no entrance at all on the Verdun Av side of the building: ,I wonder if they have parking off the road ,..or is this perhaps jsut a bit of an illusion as to how far back from Rielle it actually is?? "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
The Point St Charles, Hall of Recognition Cermony's ,will be taking place later this month of September,(the 23 ,I believe),........so if any of you are interested, you should look into getting your tickets, but I would suspect that a community as tight knit as the Point,..then tickets may be gone,.....but Look into just in case,....They will be having ,George Chuvalo, as a guest speaker,I have heard this man speak on several occasions,...and considering all the shots this man has taken ,..both personal & professional,....he remains a very Positive type person, and would certainly be worth hearing:.......he is strong of will &mind, a real Canadian :Checkout George & Wesley's Point St Charles site ,if you want more info,..they are very helpful when asked,...and supporting another community like ours ,is just the neighbourly thing to do: They honour many of the many men & women ,who have gone out of their way to Help the kids & or Citizens of the Point, and many times out of theri own pockets to do it:Verdun too has many People like this ,.perhaps We should take a page out of the Point's Book,.....and Honour some of Verdun's Great Unselfish People,of which there were many,.........Do we have a thing like this in Verdun?? I hope so: "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Now that is one 'crazy' looking bunch of Modern Day Monkey Bars,........Looks kinda neat,........Guess it's More of a Spider Web,........than Monkey Bars Still looks fun though,...............How high is the top,....15 feet roughly, not quite as high as a second storey gallery,.....which I've had occasion to jump off periodically, during my tenure ,as a kid...............hahahahahah "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"................fell off a few too !! when n a bit of a rush.......
Les, I'd say it is closer to 20 ft. Amazing that with all the guidelines for safety these days that something this high is available to the kids. The ground is padded with woodchips, it must be pretty deep to cushion any falls. My kids enjoyed trying out an assortment of spiralling aparatus that were in the same playground. The most striking observation at the playground was that there were no children present that weren't being supervised by adults. Our parents didn't feel the need to watch us so closely.......
Hello Maggie,.that is a sad statement,'no kids around'........we would have had a hard time getting a swing ,without a wait period...........hahahaha the times have changed,..............it must have been fun,to walk around with your children and watch them play in places you did long ago (Ok maybe not that long ago............hahahahah ) The whole chance to visit is great, isn't it? Each visit I make I appreciate,...but I also see the changes,......Oh well as they say you can't go home again,......That's why the memories are good to keep alive: Hope you had a real good holiday,...........a temporary escape from day to day stuff,. I was just thinking that it must be getting close to the time ,for ttthe Leaves to turn colours, and inevitably fall,....and create those large piles of leaves in the gutter & parks,........I can picture the Tree Lined Streets,...with all the leaves turning,.......NDG was a great place for that ,.the trees there wqere mature when I was a kid ,...and seemed gigantic,......but now out here I see trees,in the 150- 200 ft high, on all our surrounding hills,.....(but still tough to beat the memory of those trees as a kid).................... "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
There were plenty of kids around, just not on their own. There seemed to be a lot less mature trees in Verdun this time around. I think the ice storms have taken a toll. The trees still are very big compared to what we see here in Saskatchewan. There was one particular tree that was even bigger up close than I remembered it. I do think "our backyard tree" may be the biggest tree in Verdun! It looks very much alive and strong as can be. It might even be big enough to hold all the "branches" of the kids that used to climb in it! well.....that might be an exaggeration.....but it is really big.
JMH I'm not sure as to which street ,this is,....but NDG does have many Tree-lined streets,....almost all of them ,...and if you get off the main streets like sherbrooke thee are some real nice ares in there: Nice picture,........and in a few weeks all these will change colour, and start to create those large piles ,for kids to play in,.....or just walkijng through a park ,sort of kicking them out oh the way,...and the wind rustling them around,.......usually as it gets closer to Halloween, the piles get huge,..but then the fall rains start & some streets get almost slippery with them .....................................Thanks for picture ,the greenery is fantastic HF&RV
I'll bet there are still a lot of great pictures out there, that maybe some of Our members have tucked away,...that would show some of the tree-lined streets in Verdun,....there does seem to be a lot more trees on Wellington St,..as we saw a few months back when someone posted a telephoto shot down Wellington St,....as some of the older Trees may have died off,...a lot of new ones got planted in the 80's, and they are now starting to mature nicely as well,........but there must be some pics around of the old avenues,.....Remember sitting in a park, the one near the SHGV (the new library ,as we called it when it made it's debut) on Bannantyne,.....that whole Blvd was loaded with big trees,......and alwas made for a nice escape from the sun,on those hot summer days: I wonder if Guy has a modern day shot of the park surrounding the SHGV?? I hope so ,.if you do Guy,we'd like to see one ,Thanks ............Also I should ask any of members ,(as I've done many times.......hahahah) if they have found any old photo's of days gone by in Verdun,....that they might consider sharing ,We'd appreciate it,....If anyone needs help on posting any of these ,let us know ,we'll do what we can: "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Aside from Mount Royal,......Montreal has done a good job of maintaining ,alot of Greenspace,.& Parks,...the parks while being mostly small & interspersed throughout the Island, do provide an escape from the City, without having to actually leave the city,......Here's an example, hope it comes out Ok:"Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Just getting some breaking nes apparently of a Lunatic Gunman in Dawson College in Montreal,......Haven't heard what's hapenning yet ,...but I hope they calm this guy down before it get's real dangerous:
Seems they have confirmation of 4 people injured so far..........this is as of 1:30pm Montreal Time,........there is a large Police response of course area is bordered by Atwater,......Sherbrooke ,.....Greene.......and bus routes are affected,........the shots rang out at around 12:45 ..........and there are Multiple Shooters, There are some reports of a police officer may have been shot as well (this is only what I'm hearing ,right now)......... http://www.940news.com/ click Listen Live if you like: ...................................................................................................
I hope none of you need this number,....or have any family or friends attending the Dawson College, but I have several screens on right now monitoring whats hapenning in Montreal, on the CBC Newsworld channel,...they are posting an Information Phone Number This is the number posted on the CBC channel 514-280-2806 Hopefully none of Our members need this ,but there it is:
Montreal Police are now saying they believe there was only 1 shooter, and he has (in their words) been Neutralized,..... They still have SWAT (ERT) inside Dawson College, but that everyone has been evacuated: Police earlier reports had thought & reported that as many as 3 shooters were involved: ...but it's understandable amidst the chaos & confusion that things can be reported ,that hadn't hapenned..... Hope all the people hurt survive,...some are critical, according to reports, those reports vary as to how many as well,...So I guess we'll allknow later on ,..i imagine a Police Rep,wil give a press conference soon: It's a crazy world we live in:.......................................................
Les_F, I'm going to the SHGV on Saturday as I will be on duty and I will take pictures of the surrounding area including the library and the park in the rear. Guy
Thanks Guy that would be appreciated,.....it's been a few years since I saw that park,.Although about 5 maybe 6 years ago,.I was visiting a friend of mine who (at that time) owned the Depanneur at Brown & Beaurling,.....He had both a Dep & the Video Store out front,....but sold some years back,....I should check out some of my old video's as I filmed quite a bit around there,...but probably not as far down as the SHGV,.......So many thanks in advance........Seems like you really enjoy your work with SHGV,....History is important,...whether it be in pictures ,or the valuable information afforded us in old books,.....Good Stuff,....guess we have to Tahnk a Teacher or our Parents who taught us to read.......... "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
While trying to find some info ,for katkal5,.....I ended up tracing back to msg #2, from Mike ,in the RV series:.........Here it is,check the date,.....that's a little while ago: From: mike_stark in response to Message 1 Sent: 9/1/2003 1:21 AM Hi Les, I knew the Snow's well,,,I lived just down the street at158 Gordon. I beleive that Bob Snow lost his life on that river with another fellow on the rapids. They used to go duck hunting every year. Mike Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Great picture Maggie,.....and aptly titled,.........Verdun Playground the lanes even look cleaner than they ever did,.....partly ,i would imagine from the garbage pickup being out on the streets now,......so no accumulation od stuff in the lanes,....and fewer sheds ,makes it much brighter,..........Still the old clotheslines......too: That picture is almost identical to the one I posted the other day from Cote st Paul,.Eadie St,..........but all the pics seem to only load for a day or two ,.then disappear,.....I'll have to check that out,......anyway Nice picture ........ HF&RV
Hi Maggie ! Front picture: Nice photo of a lane. Is it the lane between 4th and 5th Ave, and btwn Bannantyne and Verdun av. ? Looking towards Bannantyne ? JM
JM, you sure know Verdun! Only thing you got wrong was the direction. This is a photo of the laneway between 4th and 5th (taken from the 4th side) Avenues. We were between Verdun and Bannantyne looking towards Verdun Avenue. I was surprised by the clean, neat appearance of the laneways. They are indeed a great place for Verdun's children to play and make their own memories.
Hi Maggie ! The first version of my message was: Front picture: Nice photo of a lane. Is it the lane between 4th and 5th Ave, and btwn Bannantyne and Verdun av. ? Looking towards Verdun ave. ? I cancelled it (RV9934) because I thought that Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes church should be more visible in that direction. Have a nice day ! JM
JMH here is a photo to reciprocate for the photo you posted of a Rainbow ,.in Vamcouver, This one is in Kirkland not far from Verdun, quite similar: ...................Was the pot of gold at your end,....cause I haven't noticed it out here............hahahahaha
MaggiMck,....did you post this same photo at one time? I just came across it on the net,..and it seems familiar? I don't know how long it willl stay for,....but it is from Verdun,....lately a day or so later some pics are just not re-loading,..I'm not sure why?
Les_F, Do you have the date and year Bob Snow drowned in the rapids. I might be able to find an article in the Verdun Messanger about this drowning. We have a collection of old editions of the Messanger at the SHGV. Guy .
Hello Guy ,.....I am only guessing here,...but I would think it was around 1966, they ived around the corner from me on Gordon Av,...the houses just before you got to the lane,..and of course just past the lane was CKVL there was four people in that boat,....Hope this helps somewhat You must have a ball, geting to work in a Library filled with all kinds of information of Verdun,. Also I have an old Messanger here,...and on one side it says Verdun Messanger, serving also Cot St Paul,Ville Emard,......etc etc and I believe they at one time also served the Point St Charles area,........if by chance you see a paper showing this ,would you be able to scan that and post it for us? If so that would be great: What a good way to spend a day,...through all that history, Thanks Guy,..............much appreciated
Our fearless leader Remembers this: Here's te site: http://www.70disco.com/jimmycas.htm ..............You had to be there http://www.70disco.com/jimmycas.htm
Guy.....thanks for your many interesting posts..... Regarding Bobby snow .....If my memory serves me correctly the unfortunate event occured either in the fall of 1963 or the spring of 1964.
He was in grade 10 at VHS at the time....maybe someone could possibly come up with a class picture . The teacher that year was Mr. Cameron...
Sorry jm, We only took pictures of the beavers (2 styles) as it was a current topic on VC. The brick facing on the houses had been "spruced" up. These houses are on the Bannantyne to Champlain block of 5th avenue. Across from a french school.
Floyd Curry a long time member of the Montreal Canadiens ,has passed away,.... he spent not only his playing career with the Habs,.....but also all of his working career as well,..He stayed in the Montreal orgqanization, apparently according to this story,....his one and only NHL hatrick was scored on a night while the Princess Elizabeth attended the game,.....she must have been young,.because hasn't she been te Queen since about 1952??? Floyd James Curry Floyd Curry became a professional hockey player in 1945 as a member of the Quebec Royals of the Quebec Senior Hockey League. One year later, the team was renamed the Montreal Royals. In both seasons, he surpassed the 20-goal and 40-point plateau. In 1947-48, Curry was given the opportunity to play in the NHL, with the Montreal Canadiens. In 31 games, he had a goal and six points. Curry, known as a defensive specialist, played on some powerhouse Canadiens' teams, which included the likes of Maurice Richard, Doug Harvey, Bernie Geoffrion, Jean Beliveau, and Jacques Plante in goal. "When I first came out of junior hockey, I was known as a scorer," Curry noted. "But when I arrived in Montreal I knew right away I could not compete with the likes of some of the stars they had there, so I made a conscious effort to change my game to a defensive style." It was that intelligent decision which kept him on the Canadiens' roster for ten years, and earned him four Stanley Cup rings. He did have one 20-goal season, in 1951-52. Curry recalls an evening when he and some former Habs' players were visiting their one-time general manager Frank Selke at his home near Montreal. Selke asked Curry if he remembered the night he scored a goal in front of the Princess. The princess was the current Queen Elizabeth of England. The goal Mr. Selke was referring to was actually three goals, the only hat trick ever turned by Curry in his NHL career. When it was all over, Curry had played in 601 NHL games, scoring 105 goals and 99 assists for 204 points. Curry has remained in the Canadiens' organization throughout the years and was the team's director of advertising sales into the late 1980s. .......................................................................... Goodbye Mr Curry...............
Hi Edbro,.................still searching for a picture of that Bovril sign:but here's another old advert they used: ....................................Wow they sure made this stuff out be a 'cure all'.....
We all probably Remember these catalogues,........they were great to look through and see a lot of stuff ,you couldn't afford..................hahahahaha .............................................................I think I Remember this edition, but it's most likely the power of suggestion....................................
Not sure what country that cartoon advert for Bovril comes from, but I don't think we have "moors" over here, do we? I was getting all excited when he said "Emergency Ann, get the flask." only to be let down when it contained Bovril instead of something a little stronger. Were we really so naieve back in those days to really believe these adverts? At any rate, they sure provide a real chuckle now-a-days. Thanks for the memories. Cheers.
Yes RDM, I have to admit I don't think of Floyd Curry, when I think of the Habs,.....but once the prompt is put there,....you think ,Oh Yea ,.........but I admit also I didn't realise just 'how long ' he did serve with the Habs,.....and won 4 cups,.(?).........and a few years behind the bench too?.........Sounds like he was a decent guy too,....down to earth,.and seemed to just do the right things, without the need for accolades,.....Defineitly a good trait,in Real Life: Here's the obit in today's Montreal Gazette: http://www.legacy.com/can-montreal/Obituaries.asp?Page=Lifestory&PersonId=19282779
Hi Mom'45 (Linda),........Ads really have never changed ,.there almost all stretching the truth as far as they can,..........it's just that we see more of them nowadays,.... In finding a few of those ads ,over the last few days,....I've come across some ,that are laughable I'll post some ssoon
How's this one ,,,,,,,,,,the stories are hilarious,.....this one is about poor old Ann: ................I guess Mum's the Word..................hahahahaha
Same old crap,.....different decade...........hahahaha Use this magic cream on your face & you turn into a beauty,...............it has to be true,............ Checkout the before & after..................hahahahahahah
TYhis Gal on the right was getting alot of work in those days,..........she looks the same as the one from the other before & after ad:...............hahahaha ............................Same ads they sell us now,.........
Poor Ann....I wonder why they always name the person that???? Probably cause there's only 3 letters to the name. Anyway notice at the bottom "WOMEN IN UNIFORM NEED MUM".....why.....are they smellier than women not in uniform? I laughed at the line "A bath is not enough....".....and "you can use MUM before or after dressing". How the heck would you put it on through your clothes? But I guess at the time they were probably state of the art and very avantguard. In closing I'll just say it didn't seem to matter that your clothes were dripping wet with perspiration, but what did matter was that you didn't smell. Don't you think they would envy today's products that control odour & perspiration all in one product? Cheers.
now check this one out: Apparently there is Now No Need to stay thin,.........This ad takes an opposite approach..............just goes to show there's something for everyone..............hahahahahah............So Finally it's no longer neccessary to remain Thin,Scrawny & Underdeveloped....................hahahahahahSo if anyone ever mentions that you look like your gaining weight,...Tell them it's cause your on Sargol,.........................hahahahaha
Hi Ed ,........they used to have those ads on the back of comic books , 'tired of having sand kicked in their face' hahahaha..................Good Find,..... Funny now that I think of it ,as kids we were targeted, by ads ,to get our measley pennies from our allowances,or what we earned carrying groceries" First rule of life ,is that there's always someone out there trying to get your dough:
Here's an interactive map,..showing property values,.and their respective increases in value: Amazing how they have gone up so much,.all across the country,.but it's only good if you sell,...otherwise it's a winfall for the local Govt's,...in increased revenue from property tax's,.......but that's the game,....... http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/features/valuation/values.html Verdun :Single Family Home: = 43.5% increase.Duplex's = 56.8%Condos = 43.1%TriPlex = 55%--------------------------------------------------------------------Avg. increase in Value (Non-Residential) = 38.6%---------------------------------------------------------------------Total Property Value,in Verdun Borrough is $5,Billion Dollars..........................this up 45.3% increase ,since the last valuation period.
Les, what time period does this increase take into account? My daughter is in Ft. MacMurray looking for a house to rent. The prices are unbelievable! From $1400./mo for a 2 bedroom apartment to $2400./mo for a 2 bedroom house. I have a tip for those in Alberta ready to retire....sell there and come to Saskatchewan. The profit you make on your house (if you bought it 20 years ago) will see you through retirement!
Hi Maggie,.........FtMac is crazy right now,..and I've heard of people renting out basically there couch as a sleeping spot ,..and getting a big buck for it, We just got back from Edmonton,...and, our son,.is a heavy duty mechanic,..and he had to go & do some service work on some equipment up there,.and they had to stay 40 km's out of town (that's the closest, they could get),.....the boom is Huge everywhere in Alberta,.....but when it changes (as it always does),...you will be able to buy the town for cheap,.....just like 15 years ago,..when they couldn't seel some of the hotels in town,........it's all cyclical (sp?)......... There are definitly some property advantages (price wise) to Sask, & Manitoba,....... As for the time frame of the valuations,.......I don't know the time frame),...but generally it's year to year,....Every year we get our assessment,.and almost every year it goes up?.........but they have been reversed in the past,.but this is a rareity,.and they don't drop anywhere near as fast as they go up........(surprise surprise) Here on the island ,the taxes'I think will start to stabilise,..but they (at least I doubt) will never drop,as long as people are still coming here,.....it's large on the retirement scene,......but I have had some friends sell here & move to the Ottawa area,.build a new home, and retire there: So what's the answer,.........Go where your happy guess,....but if you choose to live where winter is more prevalent,.then make sure you have some winter toys,.so you can get out & enjoy it:........... Rain can get tiring,....but there's no shovelling ( at least not to often)
hahahahaha Bill your just going with the odds,..but I think most even number posts,.(eg:1000,2000) etc etc,...were not posted by me,...some may have ,but it's only hit & miss,......I had hoped that for the most part ,it's not about Quantity,........but more on the side of Quality ( at least I hope for the most part ,it's been somewhat informative,.and interesting,..and not there for the sake of typing)...........hahahahaha as you can tell, spelling hasn't improved a great deal,(at least the typing hasn't).......hahahaha still hit the wrong keys fairly often: So now that you've switched opeerating sytems,.Do youthink this one works better for you (eg: more user friendly??),.......and since you started biking, maybe a new digital camera,.would be in order,.and you can be Our eyes & ears on Hawaii, I think it would interesting to see some pics from all of our members on the places where they live,...we did this a few years back,.and had some response,....but it's always nice to be updated too:............What Say you??
Remember when they got up in arms over the Joe Camel ads,....because they said it was appealing directly to kids,........check out this old ad for Camel cigarettes,..... think they were trying to get anyone hooked: Fun Small Print: "The thorough test of any cigarette is steady smoking. Smoke only Camels for the next thirty days... And see how mild Camels are, pack after pack... how well they agree with your throat as you steady smoke. See if you don't find Camel more enjoyable than any other cigarette you've ever smoked Camels agree with your throat,...................I did not know that ...........hahahahaha as Johnny C would have said: Now just keep smoking them one after the other ,pack after pack,........hahahahaha was there nobody watching what ads were saying: Could you see Molson's or Labatt's or Budweiser,.coming out and saying ,Just start Drinking ,.....Beer after Beer ,...Case after Case,....Try it for the next 30 Days,..........hahahahahaha Quick somebody email Molson's and let's get this Ad-Campaign going..............hahahaha................................
I refuse to buy magazines that advertise cigarettes/smoking. I know in the big scheme of things it's very inconsequential, but hey it's my little contribution. Here's a bit of useless information I read the other day regarding cigar bands: In Cuba, in the days of the Spanish Empire, it was fashionable for rich and titled women to smoke cigars. They started the custom of wrapping narrow paper bands around the cigars to protect their fingers from nicotine stains. ...........And there you have it. To bad they didn't realize that their lungs were stained by nicotine also. Cheers.
Hi Mom45......I understand exactly how you feel, with your form of protest,...and I do something similar with regards to say a newspaper ,.or TV channel that reports something, wihout knowing all the facts first,...so I will voluntarily ,stop buying their paper,.or watch a certain show,...even if for only 6 months ,.....it's a small form of protest ,and may mean nothing to the People in question,....but if we did those things with products, then perhaps in time ,it may make a difference,...if not ,it makes us feel a little better, So farI'm still avoiding all Puritanical Type Papers,............How my doing?? ..Sh^%t it's raining in my office again:
Has anyone ever tried the "pretend" cigarettes that were supposed to help one quit smoking? I believe they were made from lettuce or something similar. I remember my mom trying them, but I guess she didn't get enough nicotine (probably no nicotine), but for a while they were the in thing to try. She also tried some sort of cigarette filters/holders that were graduated and you stepped down a size till you were weaned, so to speak. She must have tried every gadget that was for sale. She eventually ended up with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), hooked up to an oxygen machine 24/7, and eventually died as a result. Sad, sad story. I often feel like getting my soapbox out (sorry if I've gone too far here) but I keep thinking if only one person stops as a result of this story, then it's been worthwhile. My last words on this subject. Cheers.
Theyrrrrrrre baaaaaaaaaacck,.......the Habs on CJAD radio,. first pre-season game on the radio,.against the Boston Bruins,.......... They announcer at the Bell Center ,just made a nice tribute to the Students from Dawson College,........and had a moment od silence,........Very Respectful: The puck should drop in a moment or so,.they are just finishing up the Anthems: ..........................................Go Habs Go.............. You can take me out of Montreal, but you can't take Montreal out of me (sorry a very well used & tired old phrase,..........but it's true)
Sorry for those who wish to check it out, here's the link and click on Listen Live http://www.cjad.com/ ........................................................................ ........let's go Habiant, let's go
Is it toolate ,to get off the Habs band wagon.............hahahahahaha Habs with 5 penalty's,........help the Bruins to get 3 power play goals,...... the good news,......the period is finally over.........hahahahaha .....................Let's disect the team....... Jimmy (kungfu) are you guys getting this on TV ?? Do they show the pre-season games on the Tube
Habs drop the first pre-season game 5-2 and go at the bruins again tomorow night, they will be doing a lot of testing of their new players, and hopefully Gainey has put together a decent team,..Although ,I think, htey need a 'game breaker' type of guy...........and I'm not sure they have him yet,....they do have a good goaltender,.but they will have to address their discipline on the team,.so that they don't take uneccessary penalty's,...and put temselves at risk,..........We'll see what the season holds,.....I know we have a few Habs fans out there,...as well as a few Hockey fans in general,......so I guess your all happy with the start of the new season: ...........................................................................................................................
Happy Anniversary Winston,.& congratulations,........ as for kicking your habit,..good luck with that,...as in quitting anything ,You & only you,has to want to..........So your motivation is a very important one,...Family ,is something to be appreciated ,as are very good friends,....and most people in general,......So I wish you continued success ,I'm sure you'll do it,......becuase now you want to,........and that is a big part of the battle: It is astounding though at all the ads that were directed at all of us growing up,....as they are now directed at our youngsters as they grow up,....if we could curb the accessibilty to our kids .,it might bea very important 1st step in getting them to avoid some thngs altogether Now How Come you Home ...................did you not take your wife out......... Or did you have a big family thing,....? Now I hope you & your wife enjoy the rest of your evening ................Was it you that coined the phrase "Once a King always a King" ..............but now "Once a Night is Enough".........................
Hi Les and Maggie, Fort McMurray has been crazy for a number of years now---this is not new. It amazes me how people are waiting for Alberta to fall but if Alberta falls, so does the rest of the country. We are driving the country. There are several factors that are different from the previous boom and fizzle--- one was the national energy program which Albertans have not forgiven Trudeau or those darn easterners. Harper's in Ottawa now, so hopefully he doesn't do anything stupid. Was just reading in the Edmonton Commerce News today suggesting that there will be a shortage of over 300,000 Alberta workers by the year 2025. "Experts agree a massive shortfall of workers in any healthy economy is not sustainable over the long term." Every province should have this problem! "Strategic initiatives have to include improved training and apprenticeship programs, policies to make it easier for workers from other provinces to move to Alberta, better mechanisms for recognizing foreign credentials, and making better use of older workers and under-employed groups such as Aboriginal Canadians." One of the factors driving this is that we baby boomers are retiring and they need the genertion x or y's whatever they are called to fill those spots and there are less of them! As for the housing....yes, it's not just in Fort McMurray, it's everywhere. Families come here and stay at the Y or tent. Winter will be a problem. Klein was not prepared. Yeah, it's a boom here and predicators say it will last another 20 years for sure.....unless our politicians do something idiotic! And you're right Les, your decision as to where you want to live is based on your circumstances and family situation....as I always have said...we make our lives what we want it to be!
Hi Sabby one thing though they don't seem to be spending much money in places like Ft Mac,..re: the accomodation problem I mentioned,..that our son ran into ,(staying 40 km's out and driving each day)......lots of money being made but in some cases more being spent impracticlly,. but Alberta has some great apprenticeship deals going on too,...They are being very smart,.and wary of the lack of future talent,as you described,. but they also have a Huge training /Learning center in NAIT ( I think that's what it's called,.....i know our son has been sent to Calgary on many occasions for upgrades in his field,.....and now I believe NAIT in Edmonton has a program that the company & the Govt' will pay him to take: Alberta is booming for sure,...but I also heard that because alot of entry level jobs, have to pay a lot more than minimum wage,....that a lot of kids in high school are actually leaving school,,because they think they can do just fine ,because of the higher wages,...but the Alta govt' realises too that (as you say ,if I hear you right) this will & is creating a shortage of skilled people,......so anyone with some drive right now,.can do quite well for themselves,if they take advantage of all the things the Govt' has to offer,......These are the years for these young people to take advantage of and 'make hay ,while the sun shines (sort of) The more skills you gain ,will really help later on down the road, and go along way to securing their futures,........ BTW you asked me a few months ago about my daughter and whether she was comntemplating McKewan (sp?),...well as it turns out ,she is going to consider that,as a possible alternative to College here in Victoria,.......she finds it exciting in Edmonton, and seems to want to stay (Remember being Young..it was Ok for us to have dreams but when they head off ,we worry a bit,).......hahahah In anycase some sort of Visual Arts,..and some other programs, that miroor what's offered here,.....but her name is on the accepted list here in Victoria,.....but I suspect ,she would get in there ,easily enough...................Good luck to this up & coming generation,...it looks like they have Mega Opportunities Avaialble,.........I wish them all luck,....because if and when an economy has a downturn or at least a reversal of sorts,...they will have things to fall back on,......but for those who don't prepare ,.they may find some serious difficulties later in life,..........Follow their Dreams,I guess but fill your heads with knowledge too I find it almost funny that they are starting out on their journey's ,and I really didn't think I was that long into mine yet...........hahahahahaha
DannyB ,......I think it was you that mentioned "Pez" Here you go: Here's how they sold it even then,......we all know what they use to sell things Here's a link to a bunch of Pez stuff.................................. ........Pez Sez Sex ( Sex Sells everything)
Here's the link ,........guess I was premature on the button..........hahahahaha http://www.pezlist.com/mcpez/adultpez1.htm They must have made millions of of this candy,..and the dispenser
Hi Les, no , no T V yet, good thing they lost , otherwise folks would be talking about Stanley Cup . I have been kind of occupied , however read the posts regularly, will contribute more this winter, Kids hockey getting into gear, leaves are starting to change colors , fall is in the air , Montreal is still Montreal , more French than you are used to I guess, but one adopts to circumstances, I love living here, and will definately post some of the trips re Hockey this winter . Thanks Jimmy (kungfu),......we will be looking forward to your descriptive trips ,to the hockey games & trips through the city in general,...it always seems like were rght in the car with you,... We know your busy,.......... I guess seeing the faces on the grandkids ,getting ready for another season ,sure makes it worth while,......... It's amazing how much pleasure ,we get from seeing our kids growing up,and us getting a chance to do something for them,...... Teresa & I have ,the 'empty nest' thing now ,and We (ok I ) am constantly wondering if we taught them enough...........hahahahaha Your grandson,.......Willalways Remember the things you do for him,.......and probably already has a sense of what a 'character' his grandfather is............hahahaha Have you told him the story of those clowns in the Forum,(didn't you 'straiten ' a few of them out one day..........hahahahaha ..........................................................best Regards from the Westcoast
Hi Ed ,..here's another example of Bovril ,but this is the Bovril Building in Montreal: and Here's the same building from the early 1920's: ..........I didn't realize just how big Bovril actually was /is,......it has offices all over the globe,..............but I still haven't found that one particular sign ,with the tear drop lights,.....but I can piicture it:..................and as stated we don't give up: hahahahahah...................................................
Hi Ed it sounds like you know exactly where the building is,.....and for HappyDi,....it is a 7 story building built in 1921 on Van Horne Building's name
Édifice Bovril
Location Van Horne
Borough Mile-end
7 Floors
Architect McDougal & Pease Year of construction 1921 ............................................................................................... and Ed you may want to check and see first if ,the building is still owned by Bovril, but it's a good thought that they might have some pictures in there,..... Good Luck,.....and I hope your successful: In my findings so far on Bovril ,it seems they have a very proud history,...and there is a book called the history of Bovril advertising,....(or something like that ) ,it is not in stock in the library's around here,.but I will keep trying to track one down......
Hello JMH I didn't Remember Maurice working for Dow,...but I guess he did,.....Thanks for that info,..I can now make some 'bets' on that trivia ,...because most people would probably say Molson of course,....... Incidentally,......I always like that Dow Insignia,...with the Crown,...it looks neat,...... too bad the stuff killed you.............hahahahahaha didn't you say as kids .........Dow Dow Your Dead,.....while pretending to fire a gun.......( I think it was you who mentioned that ) Thanks Again for the input
Hi Les ! Dow ! Dow! T’es mort ! (It sounds better in French) BTW, The Bovril bldg was located at 6201 Park Ave (corner of Park Ave. & Van Horne) Look at this: Adventures of the Bovril Brigade http://www.dandare.org/dan/fh/bio.htm JM
JMH checkout RV9955,.............Great minds think alike,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahha BTW I you posted twice and I was thinking I would be 9999,.......but you fooled me ,....So as it turns out,......SecondAve (BillC ) was right in his guess,.........of being #10,000................ ......................................"Have Fun & Remember Verdun"........................................................BTW can you find VerdunYesteryears,..I always like that title,..and would like to resurrect it ,....I beleive you started the thread,......so it would be nice to keep it going,...What do you think??
Yes JMH very easy indeed,......but I until i looked at the background ,up the street,....i was trying to think where there was a Vaccum Cleaner Store on Wellington St, Now I know,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hahahahaha
Haven't been on this site for awhile. Imagine this is msg 2004 on this board "Remembering Verdun"! Congratulations to those who started this site! Why I came on this board now is to ask a question. I was in Montreal this past weekend to attend a memorial sevice for a relative and happened to pass the "Turcot Yards". Whatever happened to all the tracks, railroad cars, etc., that used to populate this huge area? Any idea what they expect to do there? Art
Hello Art,.........wondered where you went ,.....Good to see your post,....one of our members did a complete section ,called "Walking Turcot Yards" I'll find it for you ,and put some stuff here on the board for you,... It is quite something isn't it ,to go by a place ,that you knew in a certain way ,....and have it gone........those tracks brought alot of $$$$$$ into Montreal,.... I am just about to sit down to supper out here (Westcoast),......but later on I'll look for some stuff re:Turcot Yards,....... or maybe someone ellse will read this and jump in: Nice to hear from you again,...and hope you've got some stuff to share,.....story's ,pictures ,.whatever .........................................................................
Ok I couldn't help it ,....Here this should get you started "Walikng Turcot Yards" Our member here who contributed to this articel (blog ???) id KCM3and Here is a direct link ,you can click on to explore the whole article ,& site ,...it has a lot of interesting parts to it ,...So there you go: http://neath.wordpress.com/tag/buildings/ Hope it's of interest...........................................We'll find some good old photo's of the Train Days here as well,....if you want to see that:
Well here's a spot that a lot of people retired from,..and now they can retire to: from a news headline: Old Imperial-Tobacco plant is being transformed into loft-style condos
The old Imperial-Tobacco plant in the South-West.. St-Henri district is being transformed into loft-style condos. Real-estate developers, Prevel plan to put-in nearly 500 lofts as part of an 80-million dollar project. Social-housing activists have complained bitterly but Prevel co-president Jonathan Sigler dismisses criticism that the firm is contributing to the gentrification of poorer neighbourhoods like St-Henri. Construction on the Imperial condo-slash-social-housing project is set to start in a few weeks. Maybe you can sleep in your old office 's ...........(or has that been done........hahaha) .............................................
Tjhe old Turcott yards are where the New McGill super hospital will be built , they are now in the process of decontaminating the site , then , the new hospital is supposed to begin , and away we go jim
Here's an excerpt from 'Bilan de Siecle'Sherbrooke,.........and look who took the picture as well as wrote the inital article,on the opening of the Decarie Expressway,...looking strait down on the Turcot Interchange' Construction of the Turcot exchanger Year: 1966 짤 Nd Author: Allan Leishman Sleeping partner: Federal files of Ottawa Reference: Federal files of Ottawa At six o'clock in the morning, the D챕carie motorway is opened with circulation. Just came across this picture of my mom and I. It was taken about 1946-47. It was along the aqueduct which seemed to be a favourite spot of my parents. Notice the rocky banks and trees in the background. Is it still possible to get so close to the water? Cheers.

If the membership has been deleted then we have no way of finding out, but in this case only the message was deleted by the author so the member ID is still on the message.....Les_F.
Remember when this building was 'new',....and very futuristic like,..... and wasn't the Caf Conc (something like that ) in this building, didn't they have a sort of Paris like restaurant with dancing girls?? ................................"Always Fun to Remember Verdun"
Here's another 'small' business that the world would come to know , http://archives.cbc.ca/IDC-1-69-1587-10800/life_society/60s/clip10 bombardier is certainly a contender on the world stage of business,(However I think they do it with a lot of taxpayer money these days,......)but nevertheless they are involved in many large scale projects,.....(they were involved in designing the world's highest altitude railway in China ,...with a state of the art train, complete with oxygen assistance, for passengers ,when the train would travel through it's hiighest areas: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5133220.stm ...........amazing feat ,
Have we ever talked about Corona Beverages in Verdun. Makers of KIK and JUMBO. I live one block from there and think about the big bottles (60 ounce) that we took on family picnics. The bottom of the elephants trunk meant half gone. I measured it. Ed
It's funny you ask that Ed,.....I was looking for some pictures of Corona Bottling,.from way back when,..but it seems it has been lost in the shuffle somewhere,...as the Mexican Corona Beer,..comes up ,in most online searches,...... but I do Remember when the sign actually said Corona a fairly large sign ,on the building btwm Joseph & Verdun, where you would take the turn to head towards the Atwater Tunnel,........but if you went straight along Verdun Av,...you would meet up with Lasalle blvd,...where it met Verdun,..and then you would come to Butler(1st street in the Point),...and continue, past towards Mullins ,etc etc ...... but getting back to the Corona Bottling,...they must have changed the sign a couple of times ,.because the Corona sign,.was the Old KIK sign,..... I was watching the TV the other day,.and they had a show on called "Hockey-a peoples history",......and in one episode, the kids were using an old Wooden Case for bottles with the KIK insignia on the side of it,.........that's what prompted mt inital search for,the Corona or KIk building,...... What is in that building these days? if anything,..or is it even there? I will keep trying to find an old photo of that .......
Les, I have previously posted information on the Corona Bottling plant following a request from J.M. I am enclosing an add from the Guardian dated June 7th 1929. I also took pictures of the present day building and I will see if I can dig them up. Guy
Enclosed are two photos where the Corona Bottling Works used to be. One is of 3159 Verdun Ave. and the second one is an old building in the back lane wich may or may not have been par of the Corona complex. Also enclosed is the corner of Joseph and Atwater looking towards Verdun and the photo was taken from the front of the water filtration plant. Guy Looking towards Verdun Back Lane 3159 Verdun Ave.
Thanks again Guy,....it sure doesn't take much to spark our memories,......I can immediatley transport myself ,back to te times of walking there with a bunch of kids & pooling our money to come up with the .15 cents we needed to get a Family Size Bottle (Remember that term family size,...or a large bottle,),.....once you had a big bottle you only needed a dime to get another one,.... Seems like we could polish off a large bottle very easily,......(mind yo with 3 or 4 helpers,...all wanting a 'swig',.........we were able to sail back into the store and get our nickel back..................hahahahahaha Thanks for the memory trip.......................
Yes Les. I seem to remember the Jumbo bottle being seven cents. Kik was the same as Ginger Ale etc., 5 cents, and the small coke, pepsi two cents. Am I far off? Ed
To all the Newest members of the Verdun Connections site,.... Welcome........................Hope you jump into many of the topics,.........and You will find there are plenty of the members who have a background from all over Montreal We also hope you have an old shoe box filled with some good old pictures from the past,......and of course any stories you'd like to share as well,........ Check out all the Photo Albums available here,..as well as the links to many other Montreal type things,..................... .................................Have Fun
I believe that I recall a drink also called "Polo Rico" or something like that, although it wasn't nearly as big as "Kik" or Jumbo????????We just about lived on that stuff.....It would wash down our Lunch or Supper as we used to call it back then.......I remember the Drink.....

Merci Guy,....the New Verdun 2007 Calendar is on my desk:and I'm doing my part to support the economy too!!...........hahahahha..........................................Thanks Again for alerting us to this:
In the picture above of Duhamel Street. The first street to the right is Joseph. The next street is Verdun Avenue and the third you see in the distance is LaSalle. On the third corner (LaSalle) you can make out a depanneur. I Live next door to it. Ed
Hi Guy ,..yes I recieved 2 of them,.but my friends wife ,actually picked them up at a library on Wellington (near Church,I think she said?????)........is this a satellite branch,of the SHGV ??,......in any case I do appreciate their efforts in compiling ,the stories and pictures for the calendar: I hope they also have plans to look into making a book of Verdun's History in Pictures, (of course a Then & Now theme would be Fantastic................. Are these Calendars being sold in some stores by chance to ,make them more accessible, and give them more exposure,to the public??? If not it would be a good idea,......You could offer them to many stores and depanneurs at a somewhat discounted price,so that the store owner would make something,..and everyone would be happy,...it would place the Calendar in a higher profile position, and provide a larger market possibly,..........(perhaps too late for this year, but worth exploring, should they choose to do it again next year??) ..
Les-F, Its a small world. Yes we do have a close relationship with that store "Librairie Sons et Images" at 4150 Wellington St. near Church ave. and as a member of the administration of the SHGV, I will bring up your suggestions. Again I would like to mention that the profits go to finance our activies only as we are all volunteers. Guy
Ed, I think you are referring to the month of May in our calendar. That picture was taken on Wellington St. looking north-east (towards Montreal) at the Henri Duhamel intersection as shown on the map.Refer to no. 5. There is another picture I posted wich was taken from Atwater Street in front of the Water Filtration plant and wich I am reproducing here and wich fits your description. Guy
Hello Guy,.......I think that the work that volunteers do,......is in many cases far more valuable ,than the regular employee's ,........I don't mean to imply that regular employees are not as dedicated,....( I know that most are very good ,& certainly mean to do a good job).......but I think that people who decide to Help (regardless of the cause),do so from a position of knowledge,&abiltiy to Really do a good job: I really appreciate the efforts that you & others go to,.to get a job done ,or even to get the message across......................Many very Important Issues are done by Volunteers in every field,......................I Thank You all ,......and want you to know that ,your work is very much Appreciated....................... .............................................Merci Guy,
I can't help wondering if anyone has pictures of the west end of Verdun before the fifties. When I was a boy there were no houses from Osborne to The hospital except for along Bannantyne. What is Beurling today was a rutted dirt track. What is Champlain went as far as where Osborne is today and ended at the icehouse. An old stream called 'Tar Creek' ran through there. When kids set it afire it burned for months. Ed
JMH & bus or transportation enthusiasts,.......here is an old newspaper clipping about the Montreal Southern Counties Railway.hard to read the print (if you can at all) but I thought it was neat that this old paper would still be around: ........................................the beginnings of public transportation were born of company's like this.............................
I also understand that this very familiar ,and long building at Bridge & Wellington,.....is now being replaced or updated or something like that,....this was a very busy intersection, for many years,.....also fairly close by was the old Ariwana Club,.............Many of us had to pass this old shipping dock ,when we got off the Bus from Verdun,on our way to walk up Bridge Street ,to get us to Expo67.........Remember those days....................................1400 feet long,.........that is a long building baby,.........a quarter mile long, just part of our ever changing history.................
Les, The road on the left, I believe it is Mill Street wich leads to Victoria Bridge. I used that road many times in my youth, even on bicycle to go to Longueuil. Guy
No problem Remembering these old Red Tops,.........................they were our mile markers sort of..................................Meet You at the RedTop.........Remember when the River would have been seen easily in a picture like this,....the bank dropped off quickly,.........and there was always junk thrown over the bank,.tires.etc etc,.....................They Really have done nice work to clean things up,& reclaim lots of waterfront greenspace,.....
It has taken me a while to get back in here but the picture of the freight shed posted a while back at Wellington and bridge reminds me of backing a trailer in there. We had to Jacknife the Tractor so we wouldn't block traffic on Wellington. Ed
the lad: Here's a shot of the Bridge & wellington shipping freight shed,again,....in going back a few posts in this thread,....I see I originally posted this same picture inOctober 2006?????So here it is again.........psssssst RDM I'm on Wellington Street, but only at Bridge & Wellington ,.by that picture,.........so I'm still staying busy......hahahaha but I'm heading Downtown shortly so it may have to wait:
Trying to get closer RDM ,......down on the far right side,..but really can't make anything out really well,......and besdies this era I imasgine the building didn't as of yet house a pool hall,.............but I'm trying(as some might be want to say at times 'very trying')...........hahahahahahahbut my thoughtd would be Wtfdic.........hahahahaha ...Still working on it ,.But I really have to head out I'll check in later from downtown,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Hi Les, Haven't been on this site for awhile, however your picture did catch my eye. It didn't indicate where it was, but my old memory "sees" Wellington St., at Congregation in the "Point". This is the street where all the men that worked at the CNR shops had to walk down. Right??? Art
Hi CN shops all the way down to LeBer..all closed now..shops sit empty. Alot of land they could use for something..maybe low cost housing...would be nice.. bet they put up condos... Lad

«Oldest ‹Older 2401 – 2600 of 2601 Newer› Newest»Hi there, Don't know if anyone remembers the discussion we had about why we left Montreal.
Cheers.
Wow, thanks Linda! I can see why that stayed in your memory! Dolly
Les_F, Your absolutely right. I was born on Joseph street facing that fence and we used to go on the water treament plant grounds on the other side of the fence and slide down the hill with our toboggans in the winter. I don't know how I got over the fence as I was only about 4 years old. There may have been a gate nearby. We moved to Bond street also nearby (changed to Evangéline street in 1937) which isa short street which runs from Church to Hickson along the aqueduct and we then slid down the embankment in the winter. Guy
Ed
Dolly. why don't you start a new discussion and title it to suit your interest. That might get people talking.
Guy, did you know the Dussault family? They lived on Joseph. Gayle was my best friend. We used to play in that playground nearby. Dolly
This message has been deleted by the manager or assistant manager.
I agree with Ed: Northern Electric and MacDonald’s Tobacco JM
Yes Northern it is,.........and of course the other is the MacDonald Bldg: "HF&RV"
Many members will recognize this photo JM
yup I recognize the spot, and have been by there many times,..i think I have a similar picture somewhere, Thanks for posting it,.......................it's very close to Quebec Smoked Meat now that should give it away hf&rv
Getting a little closer I hope: You can see a Heron flying along close to the water........................... "HF&RV"
A little closer again,........I'm getting there....................hahahahaha A nice shot st Sunset................................................ havefunandrememberVerdun
Ok ,this one is for Our Cote St Paul ,members,....it's a shot taken from Eadie St,............and shows those old familiar 'clothslines', I like the shot,.and I Remember having to climb the shaky old clothsline poles in Verdun ,..to put the line ,back on the 'pulley',.........Remember those days,......the pole was probably 60 years old ,when I was a kid ,.and the nearer the top ,they got real skinny, and swayed nicely too:.................................hahahahahaha Hope you like the pic: ...............These are the newer poles obviously,....but the idea is still there: I guess most people didn't really have the room in the house for a Dryer, Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Remember the old advertisements painted on the side of brick buildings? They were actually kind of interesting some of them,.Here's one advertising Nuggett Shoe Polish, another sign I Remember seeing quite alot as a kid was Black Cat ,cigarette's,....and also Remember "It " shoe polish,.......... of course there was the rgular SweetCaps,....Coca-Cola,........Star Weekly.........ec etc ........Oh yea ,every corner store had that Bar to open the Door ,so you didn't push on the window,......and it would advertise 7 Up,...........or KiK Cola,........maybe the odd Orange Crush,.......or Nesbitt's ................ "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
The Snowdon theatre is unmistakably Art Deco and must have been built in the 30s. Anybody know? Guy
I will look that up Guy5479,........but I suspect, now that you mention it ,...that you would be right,....it does have that Art Deco look ( I never thought of that before) the refer to the Natatorium as being Art Deco as well,......but the Snowdon sure rings true on that description: HF&RV
Ask & you shall recieve, (I was once told by Mom45 I think........hahahah) Building's name
Theatre Snowdon
Location D챕carie
Borough C척te-des-neiges / NDG
3 Floors
Architect Daniel John Crighton
Year of construction 1936
Building type Public Building have fun & remember verdun
Hi Les ! You certainly know this place JM
Ed
Ed, I would guess that the pictures posted here by Di and supplied by MPU were taken very recently.
Apparently this plane ,from today's deal,..came down also on a street too !! Guess we'll here more soon, hf&rv

StJOHN'S, N.L. (CP) - Newfoundlanders were told to brace for gale-force winds, tidal surges and torrential rain after Environment Canada issued a tropical storm warning for the southeastern part of the province. Hurricane Florence was expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit the province Tuesday night, but not before unleashing gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour and 10-to 12-metre swells, forecasters warned.
I agree with you Les. Verdun & Rielle. In the past, there were Claude Neon’s signs in place of the cement bldg, ... if I’m right. JM
The Point St Charles, Hall of Recognition Cermony's ,will be taking place later this month of September,(the 23 ,I believe),........so if any of you are interested, you should look into getting your tickets, but I would suspect that a community as tight knit as the Point,..then tickets may be gone,.....but Look into just in case,....They will be having , George Chuvalo, as a guest speaker,I have heard this man speak on several occasions,...and considering all the shots this man has taken ,..both personal & professional,....he remains a very Positive type person, and would certainly be worth hearing:.......he is strong of will &mind, a real Canadian : Checkout George & Wesley's Point St Charles site ,if you want more info,..they are very helpful when asked,...and supporting another community like ours ,is just the neighbourly thing to do: They honour many of the many men & women ,who have gone out of their way to Help the kids & or Citizens of the Point, and many times out of theri own pockets to do it: Verdun too has many People like this ,.perhaps We should take a page out of the Point's Book,.....and Honour some of Verdun's Great Unselfish People,of which there were many,......... Do we have a thing like this in Verdun?? I hope so: "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Now that is one 'crazy' looking bunch of Modern Day Monkey Bars,........Looks kinda neat,........Guess it's More of a Spider Web,........than Monkey Bars Still looks fun though,...............How high is the top,....15 feet roughly, not quite as high as a second storey gallery,.....which I've had occasion to jump off periodically, during my tenure ,as a kid...............hahahahahah "Have Fun & Remember Verdun" ................fell off a few too !! when n a bit of a rush.......
Hi Les ! You talked about NDG Some trees in NDG (June 2006) Not easy to recognize the street ? JM
Aside from Mount Royal,......Montreal has done a good job of maintaining ,alot of Greenspace,.& Parks,...the parks while being mostly small & interspersed throughout the Island, do provide an escape from the City, without having to actually leave the city,......Here's an example, hope it comes out Ok: "Have Fun & Remember Verdun"
Hi Les ! Photo in NDG (RV9916): taken from Notre-Dame-de-Gr창ce av. looking North on Marcil. JM
Thanks JMH ,...... ,,,HF&RV
A well known corner in Verdun ! JM
JM I notice that there's a Pedi-Cab in the photo. Is this something new for Verdun? Bet it would be fun to take a ride around Verdun this way. Cheers.
Verdun, June 19, 2005. Do you recognize the street ? JM
Hi Mom1945-Linda ! I took that photo in June 2005. I think the Pedi-Cab were in Verdun for a few years now. Best regards, JM
Guy .
This was not my photo. I do remember it being a topic of discussion re: where was it taken?
OK JUST GOT THE MESSAGE WILL CHANGE MY SETTING TO TEXT ONLY .IF I DO IT RIGHT ?? THANKS JOHN
Hi that street is ROSS Street near CHurch Steet I regonize the Rona truck and the Church there... Hope this helps Kelly
Hi Kelly (kcolette66) ! Yes, it is Ross st. JM
I think the photo is Ross. St., Side door of Chalmer's Church.
Ed
Hi Ed ! Re: RV9928 Yes, it is Ross st. JM
Our fearless leader Remembers this: Here's te site: http://www.70disco.com/jimmycas.htm ..............You had to be there http://www.70disco.com/jimmycas.htm
Guy.....thanks for your many interesting posts.....
Regarding Bobby snow .....If my memory serves me correctly
the unfortunate event occured either in the fall of 1963 or the spring of 1964.
He was in grade 10 at VHS at the time....maybe someone could possibly come up with a class picture . The teacher that year was Mr. Cameron...
Hi Maggie ! Thanks for the front page « beaver » built house. Do you have a pic of the whole house ? JM
Sorry jm, We only took pictures of the beavers (2 styles) as it was a current topic on VC. The brick facing on the houses had been "spruced" up. These houses are on the Bannantyne to Champlain block of 5th avenue. Across from a french school.
Joey, We also have VHS graduation books at the SHGV. I will check and see if I can come up with his picture. Guy
Art, are you still around?
Hi Edbro,.................still searching for a picture of that Bovril sign: but here's another old advert they used: ....................................Wow they sure made this stuff out be a 'cure all'.....
We all probably Remember these catalogues,........they were great to look through and see a lot of stuff ,you couldn't afford..................hahahahaha .............................................................I think I Remember this edition, but it's most likely the power of suggestion....................................
Did any of you girls out there have these: ...............Also Remember Beatle wigs,Beatle Boots,..... Beatle Cards,.........................
gee Les.... i'd forgotten all about floyd curry..
TYhis Gal on the right was getting alot of work in those days,..........she looks the same as the one from the other before & after ad:...............hahahaha
............................Same ads they sell us now,.........
Cheers.
now check this one out: Apparently there is Now No Need to stay thin,......... This ad takes an opposite approach..............just goes to show there's something for everyone..............hahahahahah ............So Finally it's no longer neccessary to remain Thin,Scrawny & Underdeveloped....................hahahahahah So if anyone ever mentions that you look like your gaining weight,...Tell them it's cause your on Sargol,.........................hahahahaha
Try this: www.charlesatlas.com Ed
Hi Ed ,........they used to have those ads on the back of comic books , 'tired of having sand kicked in their face' hahahaha..................Good Find,..... Funny now that I think of it ,as kids we were targeted, by ads ,to get our measley pennies from our allowances,or what we earned carrying groceries" First rule of life ,is that there's always someone out there trying to get your dough:
Here's an interactive map,..showing property values,.and their respective increases in value: Amazing how they have gone up so much,.all across the country,.but it's only good if you sell,...otherwise it's a winfall for the local Govt's,...in increased revenue from property tax's,.......but that's the game,....... http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/features/valuation/values.html Verdun : Single Family Home: = 43.5% increase. Duplex's = 56.8% Condos = 43.1% TriPlex = 55% -------------------------------------------------------------------- Avg. increase in Value (Non-Residential) = 38.6% --------------------------------------------------------------------- Total Property Value,in Verdun Borrough is $5,Billion Dollars ..........................this up 45.3% increase ,since the last valuation period.
Who will be the 10,000th poster on this thread? I have my money on Les.
hahahahaha Bill your just going with the odds,..but I think most even number posts,.(eg:1000,2000) etc etc,...were not posted by me,...some may have ,but it's only hit & miss,......I had hoped that for the most part ,it's not about Quantity,........but more on the side of Quality ( at least I hope for the most part ,it's been somewhat informative,.and interesting,..and not there for the sake of typing)...........hahahahaha as you can tell, spelling hasn't improved a great deal,(at least the typing hasn't).......hahahaha still hit the wrong keys fairly often: So now that you've switched opeerating sytems,.Do youthink this one works better for you (eg: more user friendly??),.......and since you started biking, maybe a new digital camera,.would be in order,.and you can be Our eyes & ears on Hawaii, I think it would interesting to see some pics from all of our members on the places where they live,...we did this a few years back,.and had some response,....but it's always nice to be updated too:............What Say you??
Remember when they got up in arms over the Joe Camel ads,....because they said it was appealing directly to kids,........check out this old ad for Camel cigarettes,..... think they were trying to get anyone hooked: Fun Small Print:
"The thorough test of any cigarette is steady smoking.
Cheers.
Les_F Besides raining (again) in your office, it will soon be very, very dark on your deck (unless you installed lighting this summer). Cheers
Your right ,......

Les, Totally agree with your post. And your daughter will enjoy McEwan College. It has a great visual arts program. Dolly
I thik your contributions to this site are fantastic, as are others, keep a stiff upper lip , hang tough Jimmy
Les, I recognize the building. If I have to I will go up there. They must have a picture or some history of the sign. I'll phone tomorrow. Ed
Hi Les ! Maurice Richard was also a Dow representative (His salary was so low !) JM
Les and Ed: Where is the Bovril building located? The building looks very nice. Dianne
Hi Ed it sounds like you know exactly where the building is,.....and for HappyDi,....it is a 7 story building built in 1921 on Van Horne Building's name
Édifice Bovril
Location Van Horne
Borough Mile-end
7 Floors
Architect McDougal & Pease
Year of construction 1921
............................................................................................... and Ed you may want to check and see first if ,the building is still owned by Bovril, but it's a good thought that they might have some pictures in there,.....

Ok I couldn't help it ,....Here this should get you started "Walikng Turcot Yards" Our member here who contributed to this articel (blog ???) id KCM3 and Here is a direct link ,you can click on to explore the whole article ,& site ,...it has a lot of interesting parts to it ,...So there you go: http://neath.wordpress.com/tag/buildings/ Hope it's of interest...........................................We'll find some good old photo's of the Train Days here as well,....if you want to see that:
Is the big hill still there, or has it been levelled off a bit?
Here's an excerpt from 'Bilan de Siecle'Sherbrooke,.........and look who took the picture as well as wrote the inital article,on the opening of the Decarie Expressway,...looking strait down on the Turcot Interchange'

Just came across this picture of my mom and I. It was taken about 1946-47. It was along the aqueduct which seemed to be a favourite spot of my parents. Notice the rocky banks and trees in the background. Is it still possible to get so close to the water? Cheers.

I believe that I recall a drink also called "Polo Rico" or something like
that, although it wasn't nearly as big as "Kik" or Jumbo????????We just
about lived on that stuff.....It would wash down our Lunch or Supper as we
used to call it back then.......I remember the Drink.....

Merci Guy,....the New Verdun 2007 Calendar is on my desk: and I'm doing my part to support the economy too!!...........hahahahha ..........................................Thanks Again for alerting us to this:
In the picture above of Duhamel Street. The first street to the right is Joseph. The next street is Verdun Avenue and the third you see in the distance is LaSalle. On the third corner (LaSalle) you can make out a depanneur. I Live next door to it. Ed
Les-F, Glad to seee that you got the calendars OK and thanks for your encouragement. I am posting your message on our message board at the SHGV. Guy
Ed, What picture are you referring to. Guy
My order for calendars is in the mail today Guy, I hope you have not run out yet!
It's the one wioth the service station up front Guy. I am at 3166 0n LaSalle. Ed
Guy
Maggie, We still have some calendars left but we may have to have more printed if the demand keeps up. Guy
Hello Guy,.......I think that the work that volunteers do,......is in many cases far more valuable ,than the regular employee's ,........I don't mean to imply that regular employees are not as dedicated,....( I know that most are very good ,& certainly mean to do a good job).......but I think that people who decide to Help (regardless of the cause),do so from a position of knowledge,&abiltiy to Really do a good job: I really appreciate the efforts that you & others go to,.to get a job done ,or even to get the message across......................Many very Important Issues are done by Volunteers in every field,......................I Thank You all ,......and want you to know that ,your work is very much Appreciated....................... .............................................Merci Guy,
To message 10027 Guy; Could you advise how to order this calendar. Would like to get 1 or 2 of them. Thanks Gordso
Gordso, Send me your address at following: guy.billard@sympatico.ca Guy
That' s the picture Guy. Thank you.
Ed
JMH & bus or transportation enthusiasts,.......here is an old newspaper clipping about the Montreal Southern Counties Railway. hard to read the print (if you can at all) but I thought it was neat that this old paper would still be around: ........................................the beginnings of public transportation were born of company's like this.............................
I also understand that this very familiar ,and long building at Bridge & Wellington,.....is now being replaced or updated or something like that,.... this was a very busy intersection, for many years,.....also fairly close by was the old Ariwana Club,............. Many of us had to pass this old shipping dock ,when we got off the Bus from Verdun,on our way to walk up Bridge Street ,to get us to Expo67......... Remember those days.................................... 1400 feet long,.........that is a long building baby,.........a quarter mile long, just part of our ever changing history.................
wow...the sheds in the point..my father worked there for years and years...what memories....should post these pictures every so often...
Les, The road on the left, I believe it is Mill Street wich leads to Victoria Bridge. I used that road many times in my youth, even on bicycle to go to Longueuil. Guy
No problem Remembering these old Red Tops,.........................they were our mile markers sort of..................................Meet You at the RedTop......... Remember when the River would have been seen easily in a picture like this,....the bank dropped off quickly,.........and there was always junk thrown over the bank,.tires.etc etc,.....................They Really have done nice work to clean things up,& reclaim lots of waterfront greenspace,.....
It has taken me a while to get back in here but the picture of the freight shed posted a while back at Wellington and bridge reminds me of backing a trailer in there. We had to Jacknife the Tractor so we wouldn't block traffic on Wellington. Ed
Hi Ed When I was a kid my mom worked for Daily Freight just down from the corner.Closer to Centre St.Old than at that time.. Lad
the lad: Here's a shot of the Bridge & wellington shipping freight shed, again,....in going back a few posts in this thread,....I see I originally posted this same picture inOctober 2006????? So here it is again......... psssssst RDM I'm on Wellington Street, but only at Bridge & Wellington ,.by that picture,.........so I'm still staying busy......hahahaha but I'm heading Downtown shortly so it may have to wait:
Trying to get closer RDM ,......down on the far right side,..but really can't make anything out really well,......and besdies this era I imasgine the building didn't as of yet house a pool hall,.............but I'm trying(as some might be want to say at times 'very trying')...........hahahahahahah but my thoughtd would be Wtfdic.........hahahahaha ...Still working on it ,.But I really have to head out I'll check in later from downtown,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Hi Les, Haven't been on this site for awhile, however your picture did catch my eye. It didn't indicate where it was, but my old memory "sees" Wellington St., at Congregation in the "Point". This is the street where all the men that worked at the CNR shops had to walk down. Right??? Art
good eye reader
Hi CN shops all the way down to LeBer..all closed now..shops sit empty. Alot of land they could use for something..maybe low cost housing...would be nice.. bet they put up condos... Lad
YIKES........Sabby look what I found in searching, the old records........... Reply
