Old House on LaSalle Boulevard

This a photo of an wonderfull old house taken 11/10/2007 on LaSalle Boulevard near Galt, Gordon, Rielle avenues. I wonder how long it will stay there before some developer decides to tear it down to build a large residential building as has happened to other such treasures in the area. The properties along LaSalle with the back to the river are worth a gold mine and very tempting for owners to sell.

Well, they built those condos where the stadium used to be - one more reason why I say Georges Bosse was one of Verdun's worst mayors ever - so if the owners of these properties get together it might happen again, sandwiched between McDonald's and the Fire Station. They could even move the fire station if it meant opening up valuable property. I have also heard that developers would like to acquire the ol Verdun General for condo conversion. Anything is possible. Same ol story...

Hi Ken wouldn't the hospital be a tough one in this day & age,of bed shortages & no money for new hospitals........scary though of the area of Verdun not having it's own Hospital but who knows maybe a collaboration with Lasalle would see a new combined Hospital for both community's ? Like you say ,nowadays anything could happen...all for the sake of a developer who puts enough 'brownies' in a councillors envelope..........it's been done before, I hope that it doesn't;t happen for Verdun...just the fact that the old Stadium is gone, seems strange, did they at least replace it for the kids to have a place to play football & track ...Remember the days when all the schools in the region got together at the stadium for a mini-Olympics type of deal .....I remember the archery, the shot put, the javelin etc etc
anyway that's another topic ,.................................................................hf&rv

Les they had built Rheume Park in the 60s which they added more to it to replace the stadium. It is on the other side of the Auditorium going towards the Champlain bridge, behind the Verdun general. On the other old Verdun's dump.

Nope, no new sports facilities, though I recall those events well, Les.. If they are anywhere maybe on Nun's Island, where you can see lighting for a soccer/football field from the Verdun side. It was in the 30's I think when Mayor Wilson decried that they would never build on the waterfront. Well, the auditorium, natitorium, and stadium were all public projects. I don't think anyone went too crazy when they built the old folks homes either. But those condos are a bad sign. There is a vision of the Verdun waterfront becoming a Miami beach type place that has some developers drooling. The Verdun waterfront was probably the best, if not the biggest, kept secret in Montreal for decades. Paved paradise.....

Is'nt there anyone in Verdun to protect it's heritage from those developers. The J.A. Gagnon house wich was demolished in the early 80's could have been rebuilt after it had what I suspect may have been a suspicious fire. How about the Pavillon house wich was demolished in 1954. I am sure that other such structures were demolished to make way for large condo buildings oor other busines's. Montreal has such a fighter, I forget his name who is always there fighting to protect it's heritage.

Montreal must have something to protect heritage buildings and Verdun is part of Montreal now so it should have something. Here in Ottawa there is Heritage protection.

your right Ken ---to put up a parking lot.
I can Remember thinking at the time when they built that old folks home (as we called them then) at Woodland that it kind of spoiled the riverfront...but it was just one of those things ,we didn't spend time thinking about I guess:
As for the Nat & Aud , yes they were actually public make work projects to get the men some work for their 'relief' cheques from what I understand, ....... hope they don't get the 'miami thinking going' If the people make enough noise,it may be able to be stopped, but generally that is for a temporary period of time until the noise makers die or move ,then the newest best thing takes over namely 'development'
In the Point the residents do band together somewhat to make noise & be heard on projects they feel threaten their enviroment: Never Give Up .....HF&RV
