Corner 1st ave. and Verdun Street

I already posted this on the old site but I thought I would also post these photos on our new site to again see how it looks and just to practice. These photos are of the same corner but at a different period.

The park looks a lot different now-a-days, the subway structure is right at the edge of the sidewalk. Also I can see my old school in the distance St Willibroad 's which is no longer standing, it is now a one story french school.

Hi Bob , I thought you were in California now,.I just saw your video entry, nice job,..
Didn't you also have a neat website about the ship you served on? I think We had posted some interesting old ship photos years ago, & you were at the time just about to do a trip to Montreal/ Quebec or something like that. I am sure I posted an old shot of the USS Missouri firing it's huge guns & smoke & fire billowing out of the barrels.....anyway good usage of some this sites features.... Have a Good Holiday Season to you & your family.

I lived across the street above Norman's jewelry store from the time I was a baby 1950 to 1971. I went to St. Willibrord's School and then later to Verdun Catholic High. The store on the corner was Galarneau's (spelling) I remember my mother used to send me there for Spruce beer, the floor was wooden and it was very old. Ahhhh memories

Hi Gail,
We were neighbors for a while, I lived on Gordon Ave till 1959, then we moved up to Bannantyne, My folk's owned the little corner store called Mado's for many years. Then they moved up in the world and owned a resturant in Montreal called the 300 it was on LaGauchettere, not sure if i spelled that right but close enough.

Hi Bob, I remember Mado's very well, Verdun was a very small world. I guess you would have been a little ahead of me in school and might not know the same people. It's a shame the way Verdun has changed and all of those kids are now scattered to the four corners of the earth. That's why this site is so special.

Gail, you would be about my sister's age. Did you go to school with her? Her name was Claire Bérubé. She lives in Milton, ON now.

Madeleine,

If your mother was a teacher at St. Willibrord's School and you lived above Halpin's Funeral Parlour on the corner of Verdun Avenue and Willibrord then yes I knew your sister Claire well. Red hair and very smart. Did she go on to attend Verdun Catholic High? I notice you are now living in Cassleman, I am now in Ottawa.

Hi Gail,
Well, you got part of it correct. My mother did teach at St. Willibrord's (grade 1 boys). And yes, Claire had red hair, and she went to VCHS. But we lived on 1st Avenue, corner of Wellington. Charles Halpin's daughter was Lorna, I believe. So we are almost neighbours...Casselman is not far from Ottawa. How long has you been in Ontario? We left Quebec (Dollard des Ormeaux actually) in February 1980.
