St Thomas More Church, Old and New

I wanted to take photos of the buildings between Moffat and Manning on Bannantyne to be able to compare with these old photos of the 1st St Thomas More church and the new one. You can see the 1st church next to the 2nd and currant one on the top 1954 Guardian photo. The currant new building starts from Manning and houses the Caisse Populaire de Verdun on the corner and in between is a Dental Center called Centre Dentaire Laforte AssociĆ©e at 5773 Bannantyne. This information is going into our archives (SHGV) wich i am sharing it with MVC members.

I used to live on Manning Ave and can remember watching the new church being built. Following it's completion the original chapel became a sort of a community center. I recall attending dances there and playing basketball as well. At some point the chapel was torn down and a park was built named Lapointe Park after one off the priests . On the west side of the chapel there was a 2 storey building that had Proudfoot's convenience store and Curries Grocery store. I worked at both when I was quite young age 10 to 14. Good memories. Here Ron is a photo of Proudfoot's

I know we have a picture somewhere of Currie's too.....(not the one at 3rd av & verdun) but I will have to find it, when I do ,if I do, I will post here too,............Cheers !! HF&RV
Here is a link to the photo album that contains the Proudfoot shot,it is an assortment of many old shots from Verdun..........

Enjoy your virtual visit to Verdun

BTW: the Proudfoot photo was marked by someone at the Verdun archives incorrectly, it says 1950,but unless this was the 'Back to the Future' film then they got it wrong by a mile, the tail end of that car leaving the intersection is a very late 78-to early 80 Parisienne ........... HF&RV

Hi Les, Thanks for the follow up. I have 2 old photos at home, one taken about 1952 of my class at St Thomas more school and one taken when I made my first communion at the St Thomas More chapel. When I return home I will post them.

Sounds good Ron ,always neat to see old photo's ......First communion, I remember mine in StWillibrord's .apparently from what I'm told I was taking my tie off ,the minute I recieved the first communion ,and turned around walking back down the center isle then off came the tie.....hahahahah They had us practice the walk up the isle with the corresponding girl beside you in the weeks leading up to the event, and everyone marched up to the altar, like a mini wedding procession (en masse) , we listened to some spiel, got fed some wafer, and that was it, protected for life........hahahaha
Cheers !! HF&RV

Hi les, That photo of Proudfoots was not taken in1950. I suspect ir was tken sometime in the mid 60's . Bob Proudfoot, the father, sold the store or closed it sometime in the early 60's.
I think Curries took it over for awhile before they too closed. I see a cold beer sign in the right window and Proudfoots had 2 windows with a door in the middle. I worked in the store every day from 5 to 6.00 pm for about 2/3 years. The left window had chocolate bars and the right one had a view of the magazine rack. Keep in touch. My email is mrjazz@telus.net.

Our family moved to Verdun before St Thomas More Church and St Thomas More School were completed. My sister attended school in a fire station for a year or so. I think I started school the first year St. Thomas More School was completed. I remember the vacuum system in the back of the classes to clean the green board brushes.
I remember St Thomas More Church to be so modern after attending the beautiful St Ann's Church in the Pointe.
I found this article in the news paper of Father Gerald Mcglynn. I remember him as young and a friendly priest compared to Father Feron. I think Father Feron was the parish priest for awhile. All good memories..... Pauline Piche Garneau

Hello, I am looking for photos of this church around 1950 (I can't seem to view the original photos posted here). If anyone can provide me with photos I would greatly appreciate- trying to put together a gift for my grandparents (they got married at this church in 1951)

Hi Anonymous, I will look for the originals and try to repost them if possible.
Many photos disappeared into cyber-space and didn't make the transition to this blog Site from the original Verdun site, I tried to save as many as possible, and with any luck I may have some on an old external hardive......Cheers ! and Thanks for Surfing By
