Kinsmen's club
I used to go to the Kinsmen's club around 1951-52. Does anyone remember its location?- somewhere near Verdun Avenue, I think. And the leader at that time was a very talented pianist who was great at entertaining. Can't recall his name.
It was on Verdun And Hickson. I remember "Call Me Uncle" There are many people on here that have been to the show, and also sang on the air. including me. In the 40's, they broadcasted from the YMCA on Gordon. They then went to The Kinsmen Boys Club. Winston Allison
Hi, I used to go to the Kinsman Club all the time. I have a picture somewhere of Lois Allan and Kinsmanettes (Chorus line) I will see if I can dig it out. Judy (Brown) Wright
Hello Judy, I think I may know who you are. Didn't you live on Rushbrooke St. down towards the last streets before Point St. Charles? Our house was 3400, just beside a little alleyway leading to Wellington and almost opposite the school. I started there in Sep 1946 with Miss Prue, then Miss Philips, Miss Foster, Miss McCloud, Miss George, Miss Dorian, finishing in Grade 7 with Mr. Elliot in June 1953. I'm sure you attended Rushbrooke school too but can't recall which class you were in. I didn't know you very well, but I do still have one vivid childhood memory of you. In Grade 1, on the first day of school, my mother and I were walking down the street towards your house. You were on the opposite sidewalk going towards the school. My mother noticed you and told me that you were at Rushbrooke school and to say hello to you. Well, I was embarrassed and wouldn't or couldn't speak. I was upset at not talking to you and felt overwhelmed by a sense of shyness. I was only 6 years old but that has always been a key memory for me. Edward Herron.
Hi Edward, What a surprise...you are right I did live on Rushbrooke, 3020...and did attend Rushbrooke School. I had most of the teachers you did, so we were probably in the same class..I too started school in September 1946 and left in June of 53and Mr. Elliott was my teacher then. I then when on to Verdun High School, until graduation. I am trying to picture you, and going to see if I have any old school pictures to go through.... We are living in Peterborough Ontario, moved here in December 1965, so have been away from Verdun for a long time. I just love this site though and try to read and catch up every day.. Judy
Thanks Judy, I suspected we were in that same class, yet the only memory I have is the one I mentioned about not greeting you. Some people in Grade 7 were Gerald Pope, Flora ?, Derek ?,Sandra Chisholm, maybe John Tanner, Alan Lieshman and there was Bobby Turner too but not sure of his class I too went on to~VHS~but left at Christmas 1953 when we moved to Vancouver. The few teachers I can still picture are Mr. Broughton or Troughton for grade 8 English and Mr. Jones for French. Edward (It's possible I was called Teddy in class. It's pretty sad, isn't it, when you can't even remember your own name?)
Hi There Robert Worsley was my uncle (he has passed) and my Uncle Lorne (Gump's) uncle. My mom's mom & Uncle Robert & Uncle Lorne's dads were brother's & sisters. I met my Uncle Robert's daughter for the first time in November. Now I have a great new "cousin" and her brother is in Austraillia (as were she & her parents). This is so cool..... My mom & dad's family lived on 3rd Avenue...that's how they met! I believe my mom lived at 282. Not sure of my dad, but is was the next building. Lynn
Hello LynnMac,.......one of our members here a few years back ,is also Lorne (Gump) Worsley. cousin,.and he too grew up on Rushbrooke,.you can see his photo in our Pictures section,.... His name is Frank Worsley,.his ID name was 'Beeaired/ he lives in Alberta,....maybe he is also one of your cousins http://groups.msn.com/VerdunConnections/frankworsleyakasnookie.msnw?albumlist=2click on the link and you will go directly to his Photoalbum hf&rv
DannyB do Remember We used to all watch the"Outer Limits" at Arthur's house ,.his parents would sit on the couch and all us kids would sit on the floor in front of it,.........Remember how 'intense' that show seemed to be ,.....and over at your house, you had all those coaxial cables running everywhere,.and you were Our resident electronics Genius.........That's where we learned all about the two way radios,.and bugging the people on the air,by taking our walkie talkies & pressing one button and moving it back & forth infront of the other radio,.to make that annoying 'squelch' ( was that the term)? hahahahah ...also Remember trading credits with other kids who wanted on the machine ,.when we had to leave............... hf&rv
Arbutus, thanks so much for the index of residents. It's clear and easy to read. I recognize most of the names: Robert Worsley, that's Snooky's family. Clarence Redfern, is Diane Redfern,s and I think she had an older brother Ernest? At 3390 Raymond Belzil was about my age and we used to play together. The same for the Quesnels who had a son Roger who also went around with us. Edward
Arbutus, Thanks for the list of residents on Rushbrooke St. I recognize most of them. The Leduc's lived a couple houses down from us, as I still am in contact with Gisele. She is living in Fort Meyers Florida. Will talk to her Christmas day. Edward, I looked in high school annuals and could not find your picture, but if you left to go to Vancouver, that would be the reason....I also was in the same class as Sandra Chisholm, and Flora, can't remember her last name, and do you remember Barbara Wray? Great memories, thanks, Judy
Hello Judy, Flora's last name might have been Irvine. My desk was just over from hers in one of the classes, Grade 4 perhaps. As for the year books, I wasn't long enough at Verdun High to remember anyone there, except Alan Leishman whose father drove us home from school quite often. I have seen references to Alan on this site. Is he a member? And yes, I do remember Barbara Wray. She and I had to go up on stage to read passages from the Bible. It was a one-off event and I don't recall what the assembly was for nor in which grade it occurred. My mother, who is 94 this year, knew you and still remembers you, but not the incident about telling me to say hello to you. She even mentioned your name once or twice after we moved to Vancouver. She thought you had been in a car accident but doesn't know how she heard that. So from about 1954/55 I was under the impression that you had been hurt in an accident of some kind. I actually remember you clearly, in the sense of who you are, but can't recall any specific events. I think when I was a child, your end of the street was like the end of the world, and when we got older we used to boast about going all the way down to the end of the street. Sincerely, Edward PS. Did you know that our school on Rushbrooke St. has been turned into flats?
Hi Edward, Thanks for jogging my memory....I look at pictures and remember the person, but can't put a name to it. I have started putting names on the back of all my pictures now. I did find some old pictures and will try and send. Had to get my husband to help send the Santa Claus one. Your Mother was right, I was in a car accident in 1955. Barbara Wray was with me and unfortunatley she was killed, as was the driver of the car. It happened in Freilsburg Quebec on our way home from my parents cottage.... I don't know if Alan belongs to Verdun connections, but you are right he certainly has been mentioned. They used to live around the corner from me on May Ave. Nice hearing from you, and as I said will try and send some pictures. Judy (Brown)Wright
Hello again, Judy, I am sorry to hear about Barbara; I had no idea at all of the scope of the tragedy. In spite of the distance in time I'm still shocked. At that stage I would have been in Grade 9 or 10 at Britannia High in Vancouver. The news of the accident and my earlier account about not speaking to you on the street are the two basic memories I have about you. In fact, when I got married (1963) the two of us would discuss our earlier lives and one of the topics I used to reminisce about was that car accident, even though I knew only what my mother had reported. It made a big impression on me because I had so recently left Montreal. But I hadn't heard about Barbara or the driver. I can't imagine the grief. I look forward to the pictures if you are able to send them. Unfortunately I'm new to computers and I am not advanced enough to post photos. But I love looking through the ones on this site. Best wishes, Edward

The pianist you are talking about must have been Billy Munroe who also had an orchestra and played at the Pavillon in the 30s. Guy
