A garage in Verdun
Good morning !
I’m sure some persons will remember this spot in Verdun
Nice old photograph JMH,.where did you find this one,? Remember quite a few garages had some character in their style/ architechture,.........they look more a live than the plain jane generic stuff around these days: Look at the old pumps at this one,...............Very Good shot ,.JMH hf&rv

I do Remember a Champlain Station at the corner of Rielle & Verdun Avenue,....but I don't Remember those castle style turrets,.on this building,.but several garages had similar style,.....Calex/Supertest,Champlain /Fina/ & I think a few White Rose stations had similar styles,.( I guess it was a style of the times),.....I do see that Champlain Sign on this building,.........but if that's the one then I would think the picture is taken from almost in front of the old Guardian newspaper in the 4300 block of Verdun Avenue. looking towards Rielle ,and the BlackWatch Band marching on Verdun Ave hf&rv
JMH ,the picture you posted would have been taken from this corner(roughly) I took this photo sometime in the early 80's ,on a visit back to Verdun,.......... my friends & I would stand inside that apartment building (when we were kids) too warm up in the winter,.and further down the street, was the Verdun Guardian (later Messenger) & at one time Mackasey's Trophy store . .and directly across the street from that apartment building & on the opposite corner from the Champlain Gas Station,.was an empty lot with a couple of large 'Billboards' and Danny B & KenCm3 ,.& a few of our other friends would climb up to the top,& watch the people on Verdun Ave......maybe sneek a cigarette................hahahahaha hf&rv
Bonjours JM, Another question, at what corner is the garage, north east, north west, south east or south west. The river is east, Montreal is north, west is the aqueduc and south is LaSalle. I presume that the military parade is marching on Verdun avenue. If they are marching towards LaSalle, then the garage is on the northwest. If it is marching towards Montreal. then the garage is on the south east. Confusing ? Guy
SW ...........corner of Rielle & Wellington,.........assuming that Verdun runs E-W, and Rielle N-S , regardless of what a compass might say...... hahahahah Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Les, Then, according to your logic, the garage was on the south (river) and west (LaSalle) side. According to a compass on a map, the garage was on the south (LaSalle) east (river) side. The problem is that when we look at a map of Verdun, it is always shown lengthwise with the aqueduc on top and the river on the south, but if you look at the compass, the needle is in the direction of Montreal, wich is north. The photographer would have been standing at the northwest corner when he took the picture. The enclosed map explains it all. (I hope) Do you follow me? Guy
Salut Guy ! The convention for Montreal is not related to the geographic (magnetic) North but to St. Lawrence Blvd which divide the city East and West. JM
Exactly JMH thank you,.............it's long been known that Montreal doesn't refelct the proper directions,......the River obviously has to run West to East, consequently making the (what we call the South Shore) in the South..........hahahahah Oh well we get the idea,......................... hf&rv
Montreal is an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence river, le fleuve St. Laurent, the outlet of the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Montreal is 30 miles (48 km) long and 10 miles (15 km) wide. To its north is the slightly smaller sister island of Laval. The island is on close to a 45째 angle, but most inhabitants treat long streets like Sherbrooke and Ste. Catherine as running east-west; they may also be unaware that these streets curve with the crescent shape of the island. When a Montrealer refers to east-west, they mean parallel to the river. Keep in mind that there is an east side and a west side to Montreal; address numbers increase as you move away from the "main" (rue St. Laurent). Nord=North, Est=East, Sud=South, Ouest=West, so 1000 Ste. Catherine O. is west of St. Laurent, and not near 1000 Ste. Catherine E. Hi Ken that gas station you see is right across the street from the old StWillibrord's Boys school,......being a Champlain Station,it was certainly on the River/Lasalle side of Verdun & Rielle ,.the band I agree is marching towards Montreal, but I don't see the Calex station in the picture, althopugh it would have been on the same block as the Champlain Station,.but at the other end of course on Willibrod & Verdun,........you can also make out a Coca-Coal sign on the beick wall in the lane behind the Champlain Station,.and if you Remember there was a little Grocery Store there,........ Yikes !! hahahahahah
Hi Les, I remember buying smokes there. Victor Moore lived a few doors toward Wellington and we would go in and buy loose smokes for a nickle. We were in a very low grade in school and they would still sell them to us. Today we would be calling the cops if somebody sold our kids smokes at 7-8-9 yrs old. In our school days everything was available at arms length if you had the bucks and we always seemed to find the bucks with a little help from our friends. There was a lot of sharing going on. And imagine we all had a tab at our local hangout like Pop's and he would keep a close watch on it. If you were lucky on the pinball you could pay it off with credits. Danny
Les The shot of the medical bldg on Rielle and Verdun. I actually lived in there for awhile. They have apts on the top floor..not the best view. get to see Quinn Lane and some sheds..still not bad place..always had that drugstore smell when you walked in. Lad
Good Recall: the lad: .the drug store smell .....I distictly Remember exactly what you mean,.even after 45 years.........as kids we would hang around in the foyer to warm up,......I have some sort of memory of being asked by someone in the drug store,to deliver one of those little white bags to a house nearby,...I guess it was someone's prescription,.......... ?QuinnLane one of the few lanes that actually had a couple of houses in it ,with real street address's .........at least on the building,....another school friend lived down that lane opposite the Lumber Yard which was on Gordon,..Paul Figueroa(sp?) he also had a brother Gary,.and a siter Ann(???)...............all these thoughts just popping into my mind from those days as a kid........There used to be a Taxi stand right there on Rielle beside that apartment building.........That building still looks sort of newish for Verdun,..........and it's probably been around there for more than half a century.............YIKES !!!! hahahahaha HF&RV

Yea, it sure is. The depanneur, or beer store as we might have said once upon a time, just down Rielle on the other side of the lane was run by Marc Vaillaincourt for about 25 years until about 10 years ago. He was probably the last guy, perhaps even in all of Montreal, to have started on the beer bike and ended up buying the buisness and eventually the whole triplex. Service was notoriously slow, but on holidays or election days you could get a brown bag from him - just took a few hours to get there! He passed away in the mid to late 90's - not even 60 I think, and like with so many other types of buisneses the family really had no interest in keeping it going.
KenCM3 Remember Vaillaincourt's as well. Can recall going there to pick up order and seeing him pull out black note book he kept so you get it and pay later. He knew everyone and where you lived...Never said no as far as I know..My mom would call up and just give her name and he knew the order almost..you are right it took a while to get there. Hell I was visiting her one day later on and the door to the apt. swung open and the order was just place inside the door. I forgot about him and I said to her what was that..she just said Vaillaincourt's. Said it all.. Piece of history...and the store with the wooden floors would creak when you walked in... Thanks Lad

Hi touchy826 ! More precision: If my memory is right, the Joy station (then Calex) was on Verdun av., between Rielle & Willibrord (on the South side), slightly West of the Champlain Stn which was located on the South-West corner of Verdun av. and Rielle. JM
