Can remember the carts jammed in the front of the stores with bottles. Then why is it that Ontario does not recycle their bottles?

Does Ontario recycle at all? In Sask we have a deposit on cans and bottles and environmental levies (non refundable) on jugs and cartons. It's funny how we just assume that everyone is subject to the same legislation and that we all share the same ecological responsibilities! It costs us an extra 8¢ for each individual juice box and 5¢ is returned to us if we return them to a depot. Do they have these in other provinces?

One reporter here in Montreal a couple of years ago decided to follow a recycling truck and discovered the driver dumped his truck at the local dump. It made quite a commotion when the reporter printed his article. I wonder if this is still going on ? Guy
Hi Maggie, here in Nova Scotia we pay 10 cents on all beverage containers including small juice bags and we get 5 cents back when we return to the depoit. Milk containers are the only ones excluded. We use blue bags for all cans, glass jars, etc. that used to go to the landfill, but now are sold for recycling. Out food waste paper towels etc, goes in a compost cart that is collected every other week, gabage green bags the opposite week. Every year when my relatives come down from Montreal for 2 weeks they are completely lost as to where to put what. Patsy Ginn Ernst
The large juice 1.89 l size is .20 cents deposit - no sure what you get when you bring them back for recycle at the depot my DH does that - 5 cents per pop can or wine/liquor bottle. We have large dumpsters all around the city at RonaRevy and grocery outlets that take newspaper, cardboard, glass, cans and plastic milk jugs.
Here in BC we even return wine and booze bottles, we also pay a levy on top of the deposit to support the bottle depots

Yes we have it in B.C. but don't ask me exactly what it is cause I
don't pay that close attention to it. I do know however that the returns are
basically the same here, 2L-20cents,1L-10 cents and cans 5cents and no
return on milk of course.

In New York State all soda & beer bottles & cans have a 5 cent deposit. If you return the cans & bottles you get your 5 cents per container refunded. I recently moved to Florida where there is no deposit on beer or soda bottles & cans however we have recycle bins. The recycled stuff gets picked up weekly.
Check it out next time you're at the cash. In Quebec....soda cans are charged at 5 cents each so 24 will cost you $1.20 but that is taxable. When you return the cans you get your money back......minus the taxes of course. Another way to generate sales tax. I wonder if its the same elswhere? Comments? Mac
Hi FrenchMac, I buy can drinks all the time and have never been taxed on the deposit. I live in LaSalle and get my drinks at IGA and always get charged the deposit seperatly from the taxable soft drink. If you have been paying tax on a deposit you are being taken. Dannyb
Deposits are definitely not taxable. I have been taxed a couple of times and quickly pointed out to the cashier her error. mpu
Hi MPU, Just returned from the great City of Verdun and you are absolutely correct. There is no taxes charged on deposits. Incidentally if any Ottawa residents are interested Costco sells beer and wine in Quebec which is much cheaper than in Ontario.I purchased Sleeman's Silver Creek for $12.33 (includes deposits and taxes) 12 pack and it sells for $44.00 for 24 in Ontario.Quite a saving. Also would save about $4. on a case of 24 on Blue or Molson. Reggie Paine
