Drinking

Bill Cooper. Just to let you know, I too gave up drinking 24 years ago. Also gave up smoking 6 months ago.  As most of us growing up in Verdun came from poor backgrounds, what else do the poor do but drink and smoke. Maybe somewhere along the road we decide enough is enough. Winston Allison

Well sometimes the offspring of the poor say I dont want to be poor and never drink or smoke - they may not be rich but at least they have not seen what little money they had go up in smoke of down the sewer of course after filtering through the kidneys.  I remember when I was 9 asking someone why they drank and the reply was that they didnt have enough money to pay their bills etc and I in my 9 year old wisdom said well if you spend it on beer you will have even less money to pay your bills - as I recall that wisdom was not appreciated and got me a cuff on the ear.

As an ex-smoker (I smoked for 25 yrs and am now FREE for 8 yrs) I just wish others could experience the freedom of breaking the habit! Laws and restrictions make it tough for smokers. I really don't mean to be a pest. I do remember what it is like. (How could anyone forget?) I don't EVER want to quit again!

Note: to make it easier..try..bee...easier than beeaird. Have a Verdun buddy. He smoked all his life. Was rushed to the hospital..died three times on the table.... clogged arteries. Gave up smoking and is alive today. Not a hero here, just that if a person only one sees this and stops..great!!!!!

Hi Winston,   I smoked 3 large packs of Export A per day. I watched my Dad die of  lung cancer and on January 15,1979 I had my last butt. No patch no pills just a good friend Will Power. Easiest thing I done in my life.   Maureen was better than I was though as she quit June 3 1977 and had to put up with me for many months of smoking until I quit.   Reggie Paine

Hi everybody,  Great subject. I have a friend that smoked and drank everyday since he was a teen ( he is 72 today ) and gave up drinking and smoking for four years and then had a massive heart attack and died 3 times and was brought back with shocks. When he got out of the hospital he had a beer and a cigarette and has not stopped smoking since and still enjoys a few beer every day and says he won't stop because he will more than likely have another attack and die this time. This was more than 5 years ago. Danny

I was a heavy smoker as much as 3 1/2 packs a day and more at times until I quit 4 years ago. I had no problem at all to quit. I promised my son that if I could find a way to be pain free ( I was suffering with Causalgia which is pain syndrome ) that I would quit smoking that day. It took almost 4 years from the day I promised him to decide to take a gamble and have my foot amputated to see if that would get rid of the pain it did and I quit right then and there. We all have it in us to take control of our addictions we just have different ways of doing it and different reasons for doing it and it has to be the right time to do it.  Danny

Just want to add one thing. I really enjoyed smoking and if they were to come out with a truly safe cigarette I would be the first in line to buy it. It would also have to not stink up your hair and clothes. Danny

AHHH Smokers gotta love em.... I have never smoked well not cigs anyway.   When I allowed smokers to smoke in my house like my dad, I had burn marks on the carpets and holes in my sofa.  I do not mind smokers as long as they stay a hundred feet away from me and mine. Nice that most bars do not permit smokers inside any longer (at least in this state). Saves me huge cleaning bills for any clothes I wear when out. My father died from emphazema (sp?) smoked since he was a kid died at 88. Last 12 years of his life he could barely walk upstairs and had long bouts of pnemonia and lung problems. He probably would have lived to be a hundred without tobacco. It robbed him of a quality of life for a long time. Well let those who ride ...decide I guess...   Remmeber a SMOKING section in a restaurant is like a PISSING section in a swimming pool.. OK go ahead and flame me ...just don't smoke around me.  UGH

Hey Danny,

Maybe he should get his doctor to write him a prescription for beer &
smokes... after all it is a preventative medicine in his case! Now then
you'd really see your tax dollars working for you!

Hi DFlood,   London Ontario has  "NO SMOKING" anywhere in restaurants or bars. The bars/restaurants built patio's for their patrons to smoke outside and the city passed a bylaw to stop smoking there. There is no smoking in bingo halls or at the slots where they do have a smoking patio.   I believe smoking is so bad for your health that instead of raising taxes on cigarettes all the time they should close down cigarette companies and pay the employees a guaranteed income until they get other employment.   Reggie Paine

Hey Reggie
Why don't you stop picking on us smokers. We're
paying for those new hospitals where they're going to treat all the drinkers
with failing kidneys and livers
