4. You drink Pop, not Soda.

5. You know what a Mickey and 2-4 mean

18. You know that the four seasons mean: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road work.

19. You know that when it's 25 degrees outside, it's a warm day.

20. You understand the Labatt Blue commercials.

21. You know how to pronounce and spell "Saskatchewan".
(Sas-Kat-chew-wan)  [There ya go MAGGIE! lol]

22. You perk up when you hear the theme song from 'Hockey Night in Canada'.

23. You were in grade 12, not the 12th grade.

24. "Eh?" is a very important part of your vocabulary, and is more polite than "Huh?"

25. You actually understand these jokes, and forward them to all of your Canadian friends!!!!
And then you send them to your American friends just to
confuse them...further (hehe...JOKE eh? I'm MARRIED to a wonderful American, thank you.  )Hehehe! EH!

Any idea?

I think I have asked this on some of the other "Verdun" boards but thought I would try again anyway!  Does anyone know the whereabouts of Karen Madden (VHS class of 75)? She married Chuck Chalmers shortly after graduation and moved down east somewhere. Chuck wanted to "drive truck" and I seem to recall he went to a driving school in the Maritimes.

Any info would be appreciated.  I would love to get in touch with Karen again.

Who here said Gordie Simpson was their cousin?

Someone said here a while ago that Gordie Simpson was his cousin. If it's the same Gordie that I know all too well hehe he was best pals with my ex hubby for YEARS. Did Gordie live on 3rd Ave with his Mom for a long time? I know his dad passed away and that they eventaully moved from that house. But if you know Gordie well, then surely you knew/know Mike Stuart as well? Redhead...has a twin brother named Kenny?

Wierd Weather...yep!

Even here in Virginia. We got hit Sunday night/Monday morning with 6 inches of snow. Wakened this morning to it all glazed over in ice (ohhhhhhh what FUN walking up to the barn this A.M.! lol)...and right now outside it's snowing again! Course the kids love it...no school. But they won't be saying that when they have to use their spring break to make up these snow days. The thing I love about these old Blue Ridges is that no matter what the weather is, everything still always looks so pretty. :-)
Good to finally be able to get back online too, been absent for having troubles logging on at a good enough speed to get anywhere. Surprised when I logged in today and actually got 45333 bps considering the weather. Hope it keeps up.

Mackasey's

When I was a preteener ,I was interested in stamp collecting. I used to go to 'Mackasey's' ,the sporting goods store on Wellington where they also sold stamps for collectors.  Mr. Mackasey( I hope the spelling is correct ) also was in local politics and also ran for mayor,if I'm not mistaken.  Does anyone remember the store or it's owner?   Jim

Hi;

I left CPR at the end of January 1998 when CRB was outsourced. After 25 1/2 years service I say that I was give the Silver Boot (as opposed the the more sophisticated Golden Handshake). The only time I have been back was a few months later in 1998 to visit the pension department to get my money. I still drive by the station quite often but don`t miss it. I am very happy working for a printing company in Lasalle. Occasionaly I "dine" at Normands Patates/Frites and agree that it is still as good as it was 30 years ago! I visited Winnipeg a couple of times in the late 70s or early 80s when my sister lived there. I found it to be a nice city. What impressed me very much was the Royal Mint which seemed to be quite new at the time.

By the way, is your name Al B......? I can't think of anyone else that I knew at Windsor station that moved to Winnipeg. Just Curious.

DOES ANYONE HERE KNOW DANNY TIBBO BY ANY CHANCE?

Hello. I am looking for Danny Tibbo. He has a son named Christopher. Christopher was 5 in 1993 so he would about 15 or 16 now. Christopher's mother's name is Lori. I don't know her last name. Danny has a sister named nadine(dina for short), a sister named Caroyln(who also lives in Verdun on Egan), and a sister named Kelly. I don't know about now, but in 1993, Kelly was in Ontario, if I remember correctly. Dina has two kids, Megan and Jessica. Carolyn has two kids as well, Allysa and Alannah. Megan and Jessica's father's name is Paul, I don't remember his last name. Alannah and Alyssa's father's name is Alan. I don't remember his last name either. In 1993, Dina was living near the Jolicoeur metro and at one point, Danny lived in the apartment above where Dina lived. In 1993, Danny's parents lived in Pointe St. Charles. Danny's dad passed away in 2002 and I don't know if his mom still lives in Pointe St. Charles or not.

If any of you would help me to get in contact with Danny, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

P.S. Don't know about now, but in 1993, Danny was a big Elvis Presley fan.

Hello again Mom19451, thanks for the info.re Ms Coveyduc, alas when our time is up, it's up! My sister was in her classes too, in the 40's.(Joan Coveduck) We have learned recently, that somewhere on the Family Tree we were related. Back then, in B.C, (before Computers) neither of us knew of any connection. Mr. Cummings was a fine man. He was the Commanding Officer of the Verdun High School #69 Squadron Air Cadets, during my High School DAZE.(late 40's and early 50's.) We had Championship Bands and Drill Squads, in those good ole days.Kept us out of trouble and helped send us in sensible directions.I played Basketball with Morton Bain, who later became a Teacher and Principal at VHS. Weather report

I can remember getting ready for school and wetting my straight hair
down before combing it to the DA style at the time. This way it would
freeze in place within minutes and I'd look cool for the six blocks to
VHS. We used to believe we could train our hair this way.
Unbelievable, I miss those cold morning.

A more detailed history

Hello All, Gerry Jones here, In my first message I said I lived on 800 2nd, 692 Richard and 480 Osborne and went to Bannatyne, Riverview and VHS. For the elder members here, my dad was Bobby Jones, son of Ray, brother to Teddy and Betty. They were all born and raised in Verdun. My Mom was Ruth Baggott, daughter of Frank and Peggy, Sister to Betty and Dorothy they lived in the old west end of Verdun (Strathmore area). When I read all the messages I recognize or at least think I recognize names and people. When we lived on 2nd (1960) I remember  being sent to the store just south of bannantyne and getting a 1/2 pound of baloney on credit and grabbing a small pack of players for 40 cents. The store owner knew all the kids and they had a rack of all the receipt books with all the addresses on them and then your parents would owe up at weeks end. Imagine doing that now in Toronto. The store had one of them water cooled drink coolers, you'd reach in the freezing water and slide your pop down. Grabbing a spruce beer, or a Uptown or maybe a orange crush ( when it was good). I remeber playing standstill in the laneway between 2nd and 1st, that Bell building had a perfect ledge. I remember the Meldrums, and the Hensons who lived on 3rd. In school at that time my friends were Wendy Stack (willibrod) Lorraine Masters(willibrod), Gary Davis, Marilyn Jones, Ron McEwan (1st ave), Ken ( I think) Hastings, Ted Vezina and a little red haired girl Sandra. I remember the horse drawn milk and bread wagons, tho that was dying off then. When we went to the savoy on saturday, sometimes we had to get up early to steal the change left in the milk bottles to go. Sorry if it was your milk bottle. Then they brought out those damn tickets.lol. Think back , on a cold day like today, the milk would be frozen and popping the cardboard lids off.

You know how people ask you "Where were you when such and such happened" When JFK was killed I was sitting on the stairs of  800 2nd ave, Mom came out in tears talking the neighbors about it. Then we moved.
That is traumatic for a kid in grade 3, Richard Ave was SO FAR AWAY. May 1st was moving day then, so meeting new kids for the last two months of school was awkward. But I met good friends at Riverview, some of which I still talk to today. Carolyn McDowell, Wendy Gibbs, Louise Gibson, Norm McKeough, Regaline Huggins, John Fyfe, Peter Veinot, Roddy McPhereson, Ted Sevier, Susan James, Gail Riddell, Gail Piper, Joyce Jordan, Stuart Simms, John Parsons, Hope Wentzell, Maureen McCarthy, Derek McQuattie, Donnie Andrews. Growing up on Richard was fun, we had good neighbors, John "Pokey" Burns, Halliday, Stan Hesse, The Mallins, Al Fernie, the Popovichs, who lived above Varley's on Verdun Ave. Varley's!!! what a store, nice old people who gave you extra candy sometimes for FREE. I remember being a wagon boy at Steinbergs at Verdun and Brault and looking at the new cars at Omer Barre's every September, the salesmen would chase us all out. I remember playing hockey , swimming at the Nat, fishing at torche. So many good times. Verdun " A good place to raise your kids???" back then a 100% yes. I'l let all go now , maybe be back with a part 2 next week. Trivia question, name three things Verdun doesn't have??

Take Care All

Just joined Verdun Connection and really enjoyed the pictures that Steve Christophe displayed. The pictures of the Auditorium brought back good memories. I skated with the Verdun Figure Skating Club at the Aud from 1950-1959. The pictures of the Natatorium were really great. I remember swimming during the "free" time each morning from 9:00-Noon. I would go home for a quick lunch and then return and pay 25 cents for the rest of the day. I remember friends throwing bags of Laurentian chips from the roof . I left Montreal in 1977
and these pictures bring back some wonderful memories.

Hi everybody, God it is cold here in Montreal -28c with a windchill factor somewhere around -50. I haven't felt it this cold in a few years. I extend my best wishes for a healthy and rewarding new year to all the great folks who, like me, remember Verdun with the fondest of memories.  Thank you for sharing your remembrances which all spark wonderful thoughts back to me..........the next best thing to actually going back in time.  Looking forward to hearing more.     Cheers,  Jim  Long

Happy new year
