When I was a preteener ,I was interested in stamp collecting. I used to go to 'Mackasey's' ,the sporting goods store on Wellington where they also sold stamps for collectors. Mr. Mackasey( I hope the spelling is correct ) also was in local politics and also ran for mayor,if I'm not mistaken. Does anyone remember the store or it's owner? Jim

Hi Jim, Bryce was Postmaster General for a while. I think it was his last post brfore he became ill. Dannyb
as one of his political plums Mackasy was
appointed the head of CN Rail for a short period of
time
The stamp store was within Mackessay's sports store but was owned by a ?
Flood, a tall thin grey haired gent with a limp. Shop was the original
Verdun Stamp & Hobby Shop.
Tony

Bryce was a real gentleman,, growing up in the Point, i hung around the 79th battery boys club,, Bob Geary's dad Pat was the director, every now and then he'd send me out to Verdun to mackaseys sport store on Verdun ave, i beleive between 4th and 5th, across the st. from a chucrch, he'd always have a white apron on and would serve you personally, i was a golden glover in those days and he often give me a mouth piece free,,,real nice man Chuck Catto (former General Manager of the St. Louis Blues hockey club 1973-74)
Hi Danny,
You are correct. He was Post Master General. When he stepped down, I went with Chris & Lorne Holdaway to move him out of his apartment and back to Moffat Ave.

Hi, Was happy to see a group for Verdunites. I lived in Verdun all my life up until 2002 when I retired and moved to Ontario. My mother was a good friend of Bryce and worked for him many times during the elections. I lived on Second Avenue between Verdun and Bannantyne and have many good memories of my childhood. I went to St. Willibrord's school and continued my education at VCHS.
Winterhater. Where on 2nd avenue did you live? I lived at 835 3rd ave till 1960, when I left to enter the U.S. Marine Corps. Winston Allison

Hi, I did reply earlier but I do not see it. I lived at 684 2nd. ave. between Verdun and Bannantyne. Lived there until 1961 then moved to Stephens Ave.. It was a great street to grow up on. I even remember my phone number: York 5378 and that's many year's ago...lol. Use to hang around Johnnies on Wellington between 1st. & 2nd. until that closed then went across the street to Miss Wellington's. How many years were you in the Marines?
hi Winterhater. I spent 4 years active duty and 2 years inactive. During my inactive service and the next decade I worked at the Montreal Stock Exchange. Because I was more than 50 miles from a Marine Unit, I did not have to serve 2 more years in the reserves. That 4 years was one of the greatest times of my life. The last 2 years of that time were spent in The Philippines. Great duty. Winston Allison

I worked at the Montreal Stock Exchange onthe 4th Floor for Doherty Roadhouse McCuaig then it was changed to Doherty McCuaig. I remember I had just started back to work in February 1969 when they had the explosion.
It was two brothers, both gone now, Bryce went into politics and became our MP and was a Cabinet minister of distinction, his brother Blair turned the sporting goods shop into a printing company that eventually was run by his two sons Greg and Blair jr. who is now big in Jr. hockey scouting, When asked why they changed from Sporting Goods to Printing, Blair said they were losing their shirts in sporting goods as he and his brother were soft touches for any kid in need of equipment. All in all great people, the Mackasey's orig. from Hamilton Ont.
Hi Jim Would that be Bryce Mackassey? there was aslo a Brian, I worked for Brian Mackassey at the Maritime Employers Association at the Port of Montreal..he was the Vice President. As for Bryce Mackassey, I remember going and picking apples off their tree in their front yard. Mrs Mackassey didnt mind as long as you were polite enough to ask LOL
Hi everyone, My name is Andrea and I am Blair Mackasey's jr's oldest daughter. He is currently the head scout for Hockey Canada. My uncle Greg still works in printing. Bryce was my great uncle and although I never met him, I have his love for politics. Blair sr. passed away peacefully a few years back. Brian lives in Montreal also and is Blair ad Bryces yougest brother. trenmore printing moved to nuns island but is now closed my dad and uncle sold it a few years back and is now pizazz printing.

Hello Andrea, my name is Brian, I believe I know your great uncle Bryce's daughter, I can't remember her name, but at the time I met her she was the school nurse at Woodland School in Verdun, I went to Woodland School from 1974-1978, I was 9 years old when I started Woodland, and 13 years old when I left.

Yes that's her, I could not remember her name as a matter of fact my
parents knew her and her father.
hello Verdunite 5....I went to school with BRENDA MACKASEY....we would go to her house after school I think they lived on 6th ave Verdun.....The School was St.Wilibroards...... Cookie
I remeber the Mackasey's living on Moffat accross the street from St.Thomas Moore School(girl's side). Bryce Mackasey Steve
Hi Steve, They lived on 3rd avenue then moved to Moffat. Danny
That's How I Remember it as well DannyB,...I was at the house on 3rd,.as Michael was in some of my classes.as a kid,...by the time the Moffat address came up it was, during the October Crisis,...I dorve by there to see if the guards were there( as we had heard),...and a soldier stopped my car & asked why we were slowing in front of that house,...I told him that I had gone to school with Michael,...and he was about to search the car,..(my old '63 chev),....and Michael came out of the house and said it was alright ,and so they let us continue on,.....but as all of us know ,.having lived during those times,..you couldn't blame the soldiers for being ill at ease,.........Strange Times ,but we got through it,....I wonder how Michael is doing these days,....I Remember in grade school in StWillibrords, that he often had to go to the nurses office as,he had what was described to us (in those days ) as a hole in the heart........ He's a good guy,.....from what I Remember
Hi Les, Michael and you were in my class but whay class I'm not sure but it must have been 1st or 2nd grade. That would have been Mrs. Bearabe or Miss Menard or whoever. I can't seem to remember the second grade teachers. I know there was Mrs.Jackson grade 4, Mrs. Laren grade 3, Mr. Robichaud grade 5, help me here Les. Danny
Hi DannyB,......Here's how I Remember it,...gr1: Mrs Berube gr2: Mrs Powell gr:3: Mrs Durocher gr4: Mr McLaughlin gr5 : Mr Halpin (?) gr6: Mr Robichaud I know the next year was going to be Mr Savage....( who was married to Michael Mackassey's sister)......albeit not back then,...... and he was a tough character,....Now I do Remember the names of the teachers you mentioned,.....but I know I'm not in the class photo you posted a few years ago,.......so I guess we ( I won't say attended) were registered in different classes, sometimes,.which made it slightly easier to bum school, and sneak some cigarettes.......if we were all in the same class ....it may have been relatively obvious that we were in cahoots............hahahahaha You, Me , Art, Kenny,.....................etc etc.... but I do Remember those cattle days where we were all rounded up like cattle and marched off to church for confession...........hahahahaha by the time it took to walk from St Willibrords school,....down to the StWillibrords Church,.......(1 block apprx) the crowd seemed to dwindle considerably..........I think the balance of the class that actually made it to the church could have ridden on the same skateboard..........hahahahaha Remember those old skateboards with the roller skate wheels & a hunk of wood...........anyway I'm drifting off track.......What was your Question........hahahahahha
Les, Now that helps a little. The brain is always slow the day after being at Cote St. Paul Brasserie ( Lavey's ) I did have Mrs. Berube, Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. Brennan, Mr. Perrara. There are still a few brain cells. But I try not to use them too often in case I need them. Danny
Sounds like you had some fun DannyB,.......Now don't forget if & when i get back there for a visit,........We are goong to have to have a few 'sit down 'beers...........and the old Laverendrye will be fine........( I hate calling it the Cote St Paul).......hahahaha Although I have video from a few years ago ,.sitting inside there and a table full of Modern Day Philosophers...( not to mention Beer)............and we had a ball.........I think it was a weekend and the kitchen wasn't open,..or at least they had little to eat,....so I had someone order a Lg Pizza from Woodland Rest,.......and they deliverd it to our table in your beloved shrine the 'Cote St Paul' .....................Honestly though the Pizza was burnt to a crisp, and not verry good,..but most of the table dwellers were at the very least 'half baked',...so all was good...........hahahahahah
