Old Convent Nun's Island

Les,

The photo of the ruins  on Nun's Island wich you just posted must be the Old Convent that is shown on the photo wich appeared in the July 8th 1957 edition of the Verdun Guardian. Notice that there was talk of making a museum with this building before it conveniently burned down at the end of the 50s.

Guy , I think your comparing a photo of the site preparation for the footings of the bridge, I am sure that is not the footing or ruins of the Nuns Convent,.the onkly information that accopmanied that photo ,was that it was the beginning of the site's preparation for te building of the bridge.
But I sure like that old photo from the Guardian,..great history.....

Les,
I have added another photo of the ruins of the convent. You may be right about the photo being a footing for the bridge but it sure looks more like ruins to me. I should know better than to assume anything, however, I don't rule it out until we get more information. What is the purpose of publishing photos without any explanations,
Guy

the explanations are in the title . Champlain Bridge Beginnings,....this refers to the 'beginning of the Champlain Bridge's construction,.that was the point of the photo's ( also) under each photo is a very brief description like the photo in question says 'land prep' besides a pictures worth a thousand words I've heard. lol

Les,
I have removed the photo of the foundation from my photo album as well as from my computer until I get more information. Your series of photos on the Champlain bridge also includes archives photos of the presence of the nun's on the island wich leads to confusion due to lack of details.

The development of Nun's Island was only a few years old when we left in 1972. Could anyone tell me if it's now fully developed and has it been a successful venture and a good area to live in plus is public transportation to downtown Montreal adequate? Are there any statistics showing the ratio of owner/occupier versus rental properties on the island?...Diane

The island is very developed with multilevel condo buildings, townhouses, bungalows and commerce. I don't have any figures re cost of rent, price of bungalaows etc. but it is an upscale arear with mostly professionals who can afford it. I bicycled there last summer and construction was still going on. Quite a change from the 40s when our family would picnic on the forested island but that's progress.

The island is not the old island you rowed to from Leblanc's warf. The population exceeds 30,000 people. On the other side of Champlain bridge a new mega complex is almost finished it will bring all the offices of BCE or Bell for us together. So of course they will build condos and homes for the displaced employees involved. It's a good deal for those in good positions they could walk to work. But you know they won't at minus 28 and the wind. Go to google earth you will see. Or check this

Thanks Guy & Robert for a Nun's Island update. I'm amazed to hear that many people live on the island....sure is different from the old Pav days when the teenage boys with a boat used to try to coax the girls to join them for a trip to the quiet island for a picnic. Never fell for that line!
Robert, I checked out the site you suggested and it's just what I needed to bring me up to date. We've toyed with the idea of investing in a condo in Montreal and Nun's Island was one place we haven't even considered. Must take a closer look at the area next time we visit. Thanks again...Diane
