Mayor Wilson's house on Woodland

Here's a picture of Mayor Wilson's house on Woodland Ave. It later became the Bonnie Brae rest home and then I bought it. I lived there until I transferred to Ontario,

Not that big really. There were 3 bedrooms upstairs. An addition was put on the back of the house when Mayor Wilson lived there and it had the bathroom upstairs and the kitchen downstairs. Whe it became the Bonnie Brae rest home the downstairs was redone to make a couple of extra bedrooms. When I bought the house from the retired owner of the Bonnie Brae rest home there were a lot of "different" things in the house that had to be done for code. For example there were lights with an EXIT sign on them. The toilet downstairs had a bed pan washer attached to the toilet. There was no basement - just a dirt crawl space. Under the addition there was a place for the furnace.

when I was a kid we used to steal peaches from the back yard for our wars. They were hard as stones and you didn't want to get hit by one. At Halloween the mayor always gave pennies so he was a favorite spot. Pennies were worth something then.

Did you ever experience anything weird seeing that the house was a rest home before you bought it?

When Mayor Wilson lived there, the city put a couple of lamp posts by the front gate to make the place look nicer. They weren't there when I owned the house. Nothing weird ever happened in the house.

You don't mention what year you moved to Mayor Wilson's house. I was wondering if anyone would have a picture of the Whites' house that used to stand where Dawson's is now. All I remember is that the house must of been big because the yard ended on Egan it was Frost type fence, we used to eat small grapes of the vines that covered it, even though some said they were poison. When they demolished it my father removed some of the sod to fill our yard. Maybe something is in the newpaper.

It looks like a very well kept home,.........sort of an oasis in Verdun from most of the row housing we normally saw on the avenues.....nice place. I believe it was customary to place two lamp standards on each side of the walkway,(actually one lampstandard on each side for a total of two)for the mayor's home & didn't they bear the City of Verdun's emblem??)...at least I kind of remember that being the case in front of Gariepy's house .....( so I mispelled Gariepy didn't I,....well I 'll have to write 1000 times ,OK once ......'I must spell corectly'.......................................................hf&rv
