LaSalle Hydro Dam

I have started Album no. 38 on the Ville LaSalle dam including the swimmimg area below the dam. I have gathered 8 photos wich gives us a pretty good idea of life in that area. I myself am familiar with the area having fished perch below the dam in the early 40s. I hope these photos will bring back memories to other members. Check out other photos on Verdun past and present in the photo section of my site wich is continuously in progress as new photos turn up.

Guy do you know what year this aerial shot was taken ,it must have been early in the century(last century,---never thought I'd ever have to qwualify which century.hahahah) but there is not much of anything around the lane near the power house,,,I would guess 1920 ish maybe??? the Bronx is the oldest part of Lasalle and you can see a few of the avenues in the shot,...even Lasalle Blvd looks almost non-existent. I to fished in front of power house in the 40s, we had a row boat that we kept at Eddy's, who had a outfitters business, located right in front of power house, The city had him moved to 1 ST. Ave. Due to the all night parties he use to have.
When the perch had there run in the fall ( Sept.) a large number of fishermen use to show up both in boats & from shore.
We also had a permit for netting, and use to catch minnows. Also caught algramites in rapids. for bait.
The Pic. is old, black bank in one piece, when I fished off of same, it had broken , water spilled through & a great place to fish.
A sewer pipe had its exit about 75 feet from the front of power house, in winter one would catch Lush around there. No one worried about pollution. A lot of polio in the summer
Also a lot of people fished for perch in the winter, and the Ice houses use to take there ice from around there
This was a large operation, and employed a lot of people
Pic must be before Lasalle Golf course ?

Ron,
If you go to the photo section of my site, you will see in album no. 38 a photo of the area you refer to below the dam showing swimmers and what seems to be 3 hot dog stands. Perhaps one of these shacks was Eddy's you mention. My quess is that the photo dates back to the beginning of the 40s wich is the period we both frequented the area.

Les,
Your guess on the 1920s is also mine but we may be off a few years. Too bad that dates are not shown on these old photos. I also noticed that there is no development above the dam wich is a clue and also we can see the "beach" below the dam shown on the photos in my album no. 38.

We use to swim in summer & now that you point out the shacks, I remember a pop corn wagon, the kind that sold hot dogs & french fries, they use to be a yellow colour. located on the bank, around 6Th Ave. We use to change clothes in the brush on top of the banks. When we were older, we swam in front of power house, ( musle beach ) I have some pictures of that location somewere, will dig through same.

Hello Aildoux, unfortunately some links on this site were brought over from the Multiply Network which is now out of business , so some photos show correctly and some do not. The Lasalle Dam was a good topic & I know some of the photos appear in other posts. I do however have almost all the photos saved from our old Verdun Connections site (both on MSN & Multiply) I will in time post them again, but I am for now just keeping this blog alive as storage but I will start it up again at some point, For now people can just surf by without having to join or they can follow if they like.
Your photo of the Lasalle Dam is fantastic thanks for posting the link to it. I remember that dam well, Cheers & thanks for your input. -LesF

Thanks for the reply Les F. I presume you confirm that that is effectively the LaSalle Dam. For the record the picture was taken in about 1960 and shows my dad Laurent Guertin of Ville-Émard. Please invite me if you have something up. Thank you.
