More Montreal Scenes & Stuff
Early Montreal slushy day,........still a lot of cars around (picture early 50's)
......also has some trolley wires up there.........
Looks like this truck had something adjust it's hood.Yikes!!kinda looks like a firetruck ???..........Look at the dirty snow bank,.that's the stuff I don't miss !! HF&RV
Remember scenes like these winter in the backlanes,.wooden galleries, and catwalks over to sheds,.....snow on everything & the odd laundry hanging frozen outside...........Yikes !!!!hahaha........I doubt this is Verdunarea,..as we didn't have a lot of two storey buildings,......but I have noticed that usually after a fire ,most places were rebuilt only as two story building. I think I heard that this was a new by-law so as to rid the city of 3 story buildings.....Maybe now ,with people wanting to live more centralised ,they might start to build the old 3 story ones again (or higher) as real estate in Montreal seemed to be at a premium. hf&rv
Didn't this guy drink Coca-Cola.........here's an ironic shot ,checkout the big ad ,.looks like he's reaching over for a Kik....the shot apprently was taken on Park Avenue ? HF&RV
Could this be a shot of the old 'Muscle beach' near the old dam in Lasalle ?? It's tagged with being a beach in Lasalle....I wonder if a Verdun er We know is amongst this group? .....looks liek it was a busy place,.......date of the photo is suggested as near 1940ish....... Do You Know Where Your Parents Are/Were..........hahahahaa HF&RV
Remember the old Champlain Gas Stations ? There was one on Rielle right at the corner of the lane on teh (river side,..lasalle side) almost directly across from St Willibrord's Boys greade/elementary school.......but here's one on Sherbrooke street./////////// Just thought it was a neat old photograph --------------------What do you think ???,,,,,,,,,,,and talk about recyling , these guys advertised being a volunteer scrap rubber recieving depot..................hmmmmmmmm makes you think were being stuck up the arse, with the supposed 'recylcing fee' charged on every tire & battery & whatever else they feel they can charge us consumers with ,to make us feel guilty..................hahahahahah Yup were ruining the planet ,because we are Bad People, for buying all this crap.........and may I ad keeping the economy going,.....but let's face it we shouldn't buy anything ,cause it only goes to the landfills............We Are a Bad Bunch aren't we................hahahahahha I guess that other threat Global Warming is our fault too,.........hahahahahahha ,,,,,,,,,,,,and you have to understand that having this guy living next to you is a 'friggin privilege'...............what a 'recycler' not a junk collector........Come on this guy couldn't get near his clothes line , unless he throews a couple more old piano's out in the yard to reach the line...............hahahahha Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Les, Woud'nt this be just below the dam with Nun's island in the background. I went there often as a child in the 40s. This is a photo of the dam looking west wich I previously posted and the beach would be on the right. Guy
I think your right Guy, it sure looks like that part of the river, just below the dam......I'm still trying to find us more photos of the dam ,whether in ruins or complete,so far no luck ( & I've searched a lot of photos..Yikes!!!) HF&RV
Les This photo of a group of children from the Verdun YMCA in 1943 wich I already posted is near the same area as your photos of the beach in LaSalle. Guy
Regarding the old hydro dam in the Lachine Rapids at the foot of Bishop Power, I took these pictures recently of the The Lachine Rapids Hydraulic and Land Company. I think I was on the corner of Mountain and Rioux, when I took the photos. Besides the shot of the interesting flatiron-type of building, the closeup photo clearly shows that is was related to the old hydro dam in Lasalle. Perhaps it was the head office of the company named "Lachine Rapids Hydraulic and Land Company". The building was completed in 1896, just a year before the hydro dam officially opened in 1897, according to the information that you previously posted about this company and it's dam.
Alhtough I mentioned in my last post that I thought I was on the corner of Rioux and Mountain (and Ottawa street, I think) when I took the picture, it definitely was in Griffintown.
Here is an article about how industrial needs for power in Montreal led to the development of the Lachine Rapids Hydraulic and Land Co., as well as the Montreal Light, Heat, and Power Co.
Some good shots there BrownBlvd.... Thanks for the input, also i don't think I've seen that other oldandsold site .....I'll make a point of checking it out further...Again Thanks.... HF&RV
Cette dernière s'assurera par le fait même un quasi monopole à Montréal à partir de 1903 ............and here's what appeared in the New York Times QUEEN TO PRESS THE BUTTON.; Her Majesty Will Start the Electric Works at Lachine Rapid May 15, 1897, Wednesday Page 1, 66 words The first paragraph is not available for this article. ....... here's the link in case that button doesn't work http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=940CEFD61339E433A25756C1A9639C94669ED7CF ..........maybe we will come across some old photos of the old dam, someone must have some around: HF&RV
A few more shots re: the Lachine Rapids, .this final shot is one of the Canadian Steamships Lines :Rapid Prince" you can see the name Rapids Prince below the Canadian Steamships Line name on the Bow........... I think this property where the photo's were mostly taken ,is roughly at about 6th or 7th and Lasalle Blvd ,.I think it's like a knights of Columbus or something like that,.... I did post a picture a few years back that I took from my front gallery, when I lived on Lasalle Blvd. it may have a name like Corpus Christie./..or something like that.......... HF&RV
I can remember my father taking me out to LaSalle to see the Rapid Prince when it ran aground in the rapids opposite the area of the LaSalle golf course. That was a long time ago so I do not remember all the details.
Les, Didn't Pierre Trudeau's Family own Champlain Gas? I think they also owned Belmont Park. Is Champlain Gas still in business? Remember Supertest and White Rose Gas Stations? I loved Texaco with those free Texaco Fire Chief hats they would give us-Fresco
hi Fresco,.Yes the Trudeau family were at one time owners of (or part owners of ) Belmont Park........and now that you mention it, (power of suggestion maybe) I seem to have some recollection that they may have been somewhat owners in Champlain Gas Stations....(but can't really swear to that)as to whether Champlain Gas still exists........I do not know ( and it almost pains me to say ,I don't know)..hahahahha Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Brownblvd, These historical facts about the old Power dam in LaSalle are a good addition to our (SHGV) archives about Verdun and surrounding communities. I am already starting to have interesting photos on the subject. Thanks for your contribution. Guy
a shot inside the old Montreal Forum , the year before the 'New Look' Forum with the croseed hockey sticks came into being:Remember when there were those steel beams that could block your view,if you had those seats"?Remember Danny Gallivan's voice....... "Live from the Forum in Montreal " HF&RV
Remember the Autostade: ..was a neat place for a vey brief time:..............................................................................................hf&rv
Remember the wide receiver Hal Patterson for the Montreal Alouettes in the 50s? He caught the most amazing touchdown pass in the end zone to win the Grey Cup. His catch was on the front page of the Montreal Star in Colour the next day! I believe the Quarter back was Sam Etcheverry (the bullet).
Hi Les, this photo is of the (annual - ha ha) 1956 Stanley Cup parade at the corner of St. Catherine & St. Denis. That's Jackie Leclair in the lead car. Rgds Ron Chapdelaine
This picture is of the Nov 2, 1937 Howie Morenz Memorial Game at the Forum. Notice the "state-of the-art" timing devices in the North end. A combined Canadiens-Maroons team faced off against stars from the other teams. Some players on the All-Star team were Eddie Shore, Dit Clapper, Charlie Conacher, Busher Jackson and Hap Day. The combined Montrealers included Babe Siebert, Toe Blake, Aurel Joliet, Georges Mantha and King Clancy. The visitors won 6-5. Ron Chapdelaine
Thanks Ron,.I've actually been keeping my eye out for a photo, showing the old scoreboard from the old Forum, (long story, involves a bet.......I'm right.....hahahahah)-I win..& I will remind my buddy ,next time I see him.now where's that beer..Thanks for the pics........ HF&RV
Les Autostade saw the Montreal Beavers play there..old CFL Continental Football League.....American rules...can you tell me who owned them and where the name came from? Team colors were largely orange I think... Lad
Hi Yup sounds right...I remember they played a game at the Stadium...saw Jackie Parker get off the bus leading the team..One player that I know of went to the NFL from the Beavers... Lad
Autostade from way back when............What team is this ? Sure don't look like the Als.......could it be the Montreal Beavers or maybe a college team ??? HF&RV
Now this one is teh Als vs Ti-Cats .......according to the scoreboard....................................Have Fun and Remember Verdun...................................
Remember these guys on the Mountain, Usually we saw tem on horseback, but I do recall seeing the cross country skiis at times..............the mountain park should got a lot of usage........... HF&RV
Les Those pictures of the Als in green...1970 circa the year they won the grey cup after all those long years...I think that is Peter Dalla Riva coming out..had an old sweater like that one..then they switched to the Pepsi Can look...remember those...thats when they really fielded a strong team... Lad
Maybe some of Our members who have ties to the Point ,.may Remembeer this City & District Savings ???Conde & Centre........................................ awhile back for sure, but still part of Our Montreal History................................. HF&RV
Montreal views of buildings downtown & the old JC bridge in the background:Also Remember the old Hydro Quebec building............and other familiar Montreal Spotshave fun & remember Verdun
Milwaukee (sp?) had LaVerne & Shirley,....and Montreal it seems Surely had (TA) Verne,..........at least it did in this photo................I like the old B&W's they seem to capture the life of the city. HF&RV
A couple of more Montreal scenes for today & that concledes todays Mini-Montreal tour (I promise........hahahahaha)If you look down on the street, there appears to be what looks like one of those old Yellow VW Beetles with an sign on the roof ,....Sure looks like one of the old StHubert BBQ delivery vehicles: Remmeber their slogan & jingle in their ads: "Ding-a'ling-a-ling, that's all you do......Poot Poot Poot , StHubert BBQ" ................... This 60's jingle is one of the most widely recognized of all time. Quebecers hum it as they open their doors to our delivery men. Click here to hear it. ...........Here's the link to their website: http://www.st-hubert.com/en/history1960.php ..Have Fun & Remember Verdun...
The Police on the Mountain were ever present, & an integral part of Montreal's mystique............Although as teenagers we may not have appreciated their ever presence.......................hahahahahhaha....................but when we were little kids they were part of that 'big stuff' that we experienced that day..........telling Mom that you got to meet a policeman on a horse...............Yup wasn't exactly the same exuberance years later telling your parents you met a cop under any circumstance......hahahaha .but I bet this little kid in the photo above Remembers that day........... Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Les, In addition to a bunch of good Verdun-Lasalle spots, I fondly remember parking/necking sessions on the Westmount and East Mount Royal Lookouts - sometines BOTH in the same evening. One time: COP: What are you doing in there? ME: Necking sir COP: Well put your neck back in your pants and get the hell out of here. Another time: COP WITH FLASHLIGHT: What are you doing in there? ME: Nothing sir COP: Why don't we switch places and you hold the flashlight? Matt
Hi MattMullaly,.........I just read your response to a photo I posted ( sorry about the delay) but I don't know offhand what the name of the Tavern in the photo is ........but if you look further down on the same side of the street ,there is another Tavern as well,.I will show the pic to my brother & see if we can figure out which one it is,............Good Question though ,.cause I thought I had a reasonable grasp on the 'upholstered sewers' around Montreal too...... ( as my oldman used to call them)..........hahahahha Have Fun & Remember Verdun
Les. On closer look, PVM is on the right and the CIL building is on the left. So the picture would be looking south on University from around St. Catherine. That would make one of those taverns the University. Remember when most, if not all, the taverns had a "sterilized glasses" addendum on their sign. The joke was that when guys (no women allowed in the good old days) agreed to meet for a beer, someone always suggested they meet at Sterilized Glasses. Cheers. Matt
Hi Matt, What a memory you have! Was there a gay club above the Peel Pub? Also, please give me a tour of the night clubs you remember, if you don't mind.
Hey Matt, remember me? Dave Conlon, we worked together at RCCE in Hull with Ian King and Robo about 15 yrs ago in the Command Center. I am alive and well and living in Charlotte. I never knew you were from Verdun, I remember a Danny that worked for MacArthur that was from the Point Anyway, I think the answer to the taverne on Wellington and Bridge was the Arrawana. Dave
Matt, Rymarks was a favourite haunt of us Northern Electric employees, on St. Catherine St that also served meat loaf sandwiches & beans & franks. Bert was a "prominent" waiter at that time. How about the Stanley Tavern right besides SGWU on Metcalf? St. A favourite for us Verduners was Latours Tavern on Church St in Ct St Paul south of St. Patrick St - best draft I've ever had. Rgds Ron Chapdelaine
Sabby, You must be thinking of the Tropical Cafe which was just up the west side of Peel from St. Catherine - on the second floor. It was probably the first gay nightclub in Montreal. Probably opened in the late 40's - early 50's. The Peel Pub opened around 1959. It was right at the NW corner of Peel and St Catherine Many of us straights went to the Tropical at least once out of curiosity. Guys dancing with guys was pretty far out in those days - even by Montreal standards. How's the book coming? Matt
Ron, Rymarks Tavern was on Peel just south of St. Catherine. Next to the Hunter's Horn Irish Pub. Some called that bar the Horny Hunter for obvious reasons. You're right about the weiners and beans although I don't recall the meat loaf. I always had the pork hocks for lunch there. Jaazus, were they fatty or what? Good thing that cholesterol hadn't been invented yet. There were two big ones and they with sourcrout(sp?). And I think the STANLEY tavern was on (you guessed it) Stanley St. I'm not familiar with Latour's Tavern and their good draft. The best draft I've ever had anywhere were the free ones. Cheers. Matt
Matt, You are amazing my man! I didn't know that club had a name. Thought it was part of the Peel Pub. I went there once myself to see a drag show with some friends. They brought me there to shock me, and I didn't know what the hell was happening. Hey, I was a young Catholic chick who didn't get out much. I asked the name, because I'm using it in a scene in the novel. I've just finished polishing up chapter 5----one chapter per week ----15 to go. Some will go faster than others because I'm still researching, but at least the story is done. I worked in the Sun Life Building and we office girls used to cross Dominion Square and go to the Horne after work. I learned to drink martinis there. I usually left early because I had a boyfriend while my friends lingered on to see who would pick them up.... Memories....
Hi Sabby Hawaiian Lounge later on with Peel Pub... Hey like Benny Hill said one day "What do you call a man who marries another man"? A Vicar I am here all week...hahahaha Take care Lad
Hi Matt,....in your mention of Latours , as being a cold beer spot,....you must have forgotten about 'Daingeults' (Daine-youls) it had the very best cold beer ,aside from a few joints in the point (I'll mentione later) It was also on Church Av ....So was the 'Barina' .....and a few others..... but the Park & the Laverendrye Pub (aka) the Churchill were always favourites of wayward Verdun (er's) (ite's).......hahahahah HF&RV
Latours had that great draft beer, due to the fact the beer kegs were down in the basement, which was an orignal root cellar, and kept the beer at exactly the correct temperature, and they had a very large volume, which meant you were getting fresh draft. In the 1940's & 1950's on Friday nights (pay day) for most of the factorys in the area , and there were a lot, one had a hard time getting a seat if arriving late. The other tavern, the bridge tavern located St Patrick & Church Sts. also had capacity crowds, and had a book maker on hand at all times One could buy raw oysters by the 1/2 or full glass, cheese & crakers, or pig tounges, kippers. The only tavern that I went to that served meals, Rymarks do not know how they got away with same, whan I asked my father, he replied they had been that way when he was young. some taverns had hamburgers. Ron Larman
Les is the picture of the corner streets, Atwater & St Antoine. It looks like it to me, but I see street car rails going north on atwater, and i did not think street cars climbed that hill ?? The car in the middle of picture, looks like a Singer, but not completely sure Ron
I have enlarged the two street signs showing the names of the streets on the post at the left of the second photo but it turns out blurred. Perhaps some member might be more successfull. Guy
This is double size of the corner street sign. As you can see, the street names are blurred. Of course, the larger you enlarge, the more blurred the image gets. Guy
Hi guy , I can't figure out the lampost pic you posted, but tell me the site & I'll find out ,if possiblebut here'a a Montreal Scene ..............................................................HF&RV
Just reading your reply but isnt the one you are trying to recall just in the start of Point and called the Sports. At one time it had rooms for rent next door and up the grey stairs. LOL SY Tiny Tina P.S. Oh and it was MEN only
Les, Re your message no. 66, the photo did not show up. Concerning the names of the streets, my message no. 65 refers to your second photo on your message no. 1. Guy
I may have missed some of the conversation, but the first Tavern as you came into the Point (from Verdun) was the Pall Mall ,wasn't it.........?but the Sportsman does sound right too. and Tiny Tina your right .all Tavern's in Quebec were Men Only, until the advent of Brasseries then some old Taverns changed their license to allow women & the name also changed to a Brasserie.....plus Taverns were only allowed to be open until 11pm or midnght , Brasseries changed that pattern too... Either way it was fun to go to them all.......................................................................HF&RV ps: Tiny Tina did you see me wave to you across the straight, when I was in CR a couple of weeks ago......hahahahah I did you know, while I was having a cool beer & looking out from the patio.. So Cheers !!! HF&RV
Not sure about this 'Upholstered Sewer' but the sign would have made me go in and at least have one....mind you I've been reminded over the years ,that there really is no such thing as 'one' ......................till you get a little older.hahahahahaha .......................................HF&RV
Hi Les ! I agree with you: the closest tavern to Verdun in the Point was the Pall Mall: Pall Mall Tavern 2687 Wellington Point St. Charles Lovell (1950): http://bibnum2.banq.qc.ca/bna/lovell/src/1950/4.Annuaire_montr%E9alais_des_rues/W/110773_1950_0635.pdf BTW, we took a lunch in a tavern at 5555 Monkland ave. in NDG in May 2008. http://www.monklandtavern.com ___ We had some holidays in Kamouraska and Rivière Ouelle recently. Here is a photo of the place mats our friends had (bought in the 80‘s): You will certainly recognize the place JM
http://spacingmontreal.ca/2008/07/23/montreal-in-the-1950s-and-60s/ In my research for my novel, I came across the above site that might interest some folks here. A new film by Luc Bourdon, La Memoire des Anges, about life in 1950s and 60s Montreal from a collection of footage from NFB's vast archives will be out shortly if not already. See the trailer above. Here's what the trailer says: "An absolutely fascinating look at a city that no longer exists. The Montreal you see here is brash and cocky, a self-assured metropolis still unaware that it would be forced to suffer a prolonged existential crisis in the 1970s, 80s and 90s." Will have to get the DVD. See what you think.
Sorry, missed Glen's original post. Let us know when you get it. I'll be looking for it too. The trailer was very interesting and seems to have captured the era that was my Montreal very well.
I will , the local library used to have a deal where anyone who suggested they purchase a book or something, they would notify that person first ,so they could be the first to read or see,the suggested item, but now if they do acquire something for their collection, they no longer notify you. Strange ,cause it doesn't really make sense,So when suggesting something ,I now also have to keep on top of whether it gets added to the collection....Doesn't always stay as 'top of mind awareness' for me,..(getting forgetfull I guess).........hahahahah Oh Well , hopefully they get this suggestion & I Remember to look for it...........it will be neat to see I think. HF&RV
Saint James Street early last century ( circa '27) Imagine were almost coming round to the next '27............( If i make it)hahahstill looked busy................................................................hf&rv

Les, You must remember Black Horse Ale. Also the anouncement of the death of Oswald Woodall who mast have been the owner of the CKVL building wich was demolished a couple of years ago. These were both taken from The Guardian of 1934 from our archives. Guy SHGV ARCHIVES
Hi ! Was Black Horse and Dow the same company ?? In 1963 I rented the guest house on the ( Black Horse -Dow Estate ) on the south shore of Lake St.Louis ( several miles east of Beauharnois ) There were many posters and pictures of Black Horse Beer in the main house . The gardener and his wife ( both from Finnland ) were the only people left living there. The neighbours later on told me about how they found several members of the Dow family dead by poisoning . They also mentioned that I was crazy to stay there as the gardener and his wife had been the main suspects . All the time I lived there ( about 1 1/2 years ) I never saw the owners or family even once show up there. I always assumed that it was a DOW family but the place was just full of Black Horse stuff . In your paper article it mentions Oswald Woodall died at 58 years; does it mention how he died ? The main estate and the guest house were just unbelievable , like a scene from The Munsters . Stacked full with antiques not to mention an old Chriscraft and an old Harvard Trainer without wings. I have been trying to find out for years what this place was all about . Madi ,the old gardener called it the Dow estate and never wanted to talk about its owners or history . This is the first time I have seen the name Black horse mentioned , so I decided to write . Regards, Jurgen . ( The Haunted )
Remember when CKVL bought two of these little amphi cars....As kids we followed up Galt to the River bank behind te Auditorium near the Boating Club,...and watched in awe of these weird looking little cars, drive right into the drink......it was quite something:.............................................................................hf&v
The Seaway was started in the late 50's , Those amphicars, were at CKVL in the early 60's I think it was like 63 or64ish ?I agree that ship in the background does look like a GreatLakesShip doesn't it. but that is not the Jacques Cartier bridge in that photo,.although it does look like it. I'm really not sure where this pic is taken,.. hf&rv
Hi Guy I also agree that these contraptions did not look very stable did they ? but Here's a you tube video showing a few of these cars hitting the water,so they haven't rusted out,or have been carefully restored.cause these things are 45 years old roughly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4JJTCThIpw hf&rv

Les, Did you notice that those people have no life preserver, besides you have to get a permit to operate any vehicule that goes on the water wich today would require that passengers have them. I certainly would not have my grandmother on board, or would I ?. Guy
That's hilarious Guy , I like the sense of humour: hahahahaha "or would I " hahahaha HF&RVbut your right here in Canada,it is now mandatory that anyone operating a boat has to have a license.....and out here on the Ocean, you better know what your doing & how to read charts & know the tides as well......also heed the warnings on the weather channel (marine channel actually)....cause if it says 'small craft warning' they are not kidding.....it's a mighty big ocean out there & trouble can be had very quickly if your not careful. HF&RV

Montreal became even more popular during the prohibition days,& was made famous also in a song written by Irving Berlin Speak easy, (sh) Speak easy, Said Johnny Brown; I'm gonna leave this town, Ev'rything is closing down. (sh) Speak easy, (sh) Speak easy, And tell the bunch: I won't go East, won't go West, Got a diff'rent hunch:
Chorus 1: I'll be leaving in the summer, And I won't come back till fall, Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal. With a stein upon the table, I'll be laughing at you all, Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal. I'm on my way, I'm on my way, And I'll make whoop-whoop whoopee night and day. Anytime my wifey wants me, You can tell her where to call, Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
Patter: Yamo, yamo, I think I want a drink; Yamo, yamo, there's water in the sink. The sink, the sink, the sink, the sink, the sink; The good old rusty sink; But who the heck wants water when you're dying for a drink?
Chorus 2: Oh, "We Won't Get Home Till Morning" Is the best song after all, Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal. There'll be no more Orange Phosphates*, You can bet your Ingersoll**, Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal. That old tin pail, that old tin pail, Was never meant to carry ginger ale. There'll be photographs of brew'ries All around my bedroom wall, Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
Verse 2: (sh) Speak easy, (sh) Speak easy, Asked Tommy Gray; I must know right away, Are the gals up there okay? (sh) Speak easy, (sh) Speak easy, Said Johnny Brown; You ain't been hugged, ain't been kissed, Till you've hit that town: Hello Montreal .by Irving Berlin ......and the sing tributes Montreal's Women in the final verse................ "you ain't been higged, you ain't been kissed , -------'Till you've hit that town" HF&RV

Remember scenes like these winter in the backlanes,.wooden galleries, and catwalks over to sheds,.....snow on everything & the odd laundry hanging frozen outside...........Yikes !!!!hahaha ........I doubt this is Verdunarea,..as we didn't have a lot of two storey buildings,......but I have noticed that usually after a fire ,most places were rebuilt only as two story building. I think I heard that this was a new by-law so as to rid the city of 3 story buildings.....Maybe now ,with people wanting to live more centralised ,they might start to build the old 3 story ones again (or higher) as real estate in Montreal seemed to be at a premium. hf&rv

Guy
Hi Guy and Everyone,
Regarding the old hydro dam in the Lachine Rapids at the foot of Bishop Power, I took these pictures recently of the The Lachine Rapids Hydraulic and Land Company.

Guy,
Alhtough I mentioned in my last post that I thought I was on the corner of Rioux and Mountain (and Ottawa street, I think) when I took the picture, it definitely was in Griffintown.

Les,
Didn't Pierre Trudeau's Family own Champlain Gas? I think they also owned Belmont Park. Is Champlain Gas still in business? Remember Supertest and White Rose Gas Stations? I loved Texaco with those free Texaco Fire Chief hats they would give us-Fresco
hi Fresco,.Yes the Trudeau family were at one time owners of (or part owners of ) Belmont Park........ and now that you mention it, (power of suggestion maybe) I seem to have some recollection that they may have been somewhat owners in Champlain Gas Stations....(but can't really swear to that) as to whether Champlain Gas still exists........I do not know ( and it almost pains me to say ,I don't know)..hahahahha Have Fun & Remember Verdun

Les, I thought I knew all the taverns downtown but can't place this one. Do you know the name/location of this one?
Thanks Lad. As you can tell, I had a very sheltered life and didn't get out much....until I hit my twenties...then made up for lost time!

The car in the middle of picture, looks like a Singer, but not completely sure Ron
something wrong, will post new pictures later on tonite the franco montreal festival and more
I have enlarged the two street signs showing the names of the streets on the post at the left of the second photo but it turns out blurred. Perhaps some member might be more successfull. Guy
This is double size of the corner street sign. As you can see, the street names are blurred. Of course, the larger you enlarge, the more blurred the image gets. Guy

1. Guy
That Taverne was the "Sportsman" and I believe we knew a fella that rented a room there for a short time.
I may have missed some of the conversation, but the first Tavern as you came into the Point (from Verdun) was the Pall Mall ,wasn't it.........? but the Sportsman does sound right too. and Tiny Tina your right .all Tavern's in Quebec were Men Only, until the advent of Brasseries then some old Taverns changed their license to allow women & the name also changed to a Brasserie.....plus Taverns were only allowed to be open until 11pm or midnght , Brasseries changed that pattern too... Either way it was fun to go to them all.......................................................................HF&RV ps: Tiny Tina did you see me wave to you across the straight, when I was in CR a couple of weeks ago......hahahahah I did you know, while I was having a cool beer & looking out from the patio.. Hi Les ! I agree with you: the closest tavern to Verdun in the Point was the Pall Mall: Pall Mall Tavern 2687 Wellington Point St. Charles Lovell (1950): http://bibnum2.banq.qc.ca/bna/lovell/src/1950/4.Annuaire_montr%E9alais_des_rues/W/110773_1950_0635.pdf BTW, we took a lunch in a tavern at 5555 Monkland ave. in NDG in May 2008. http://www.monklandtavern.com ___ We had some holidays in Kamouraska and Rivière Ouelle recently. http://spacingmontreal.ca/2008/07/23/montreal-in-the-1950s-and-60s/ In my research for my novel, I came across the above site that might interest some folks here.
Remember when CKVL bought two of these little amphi cars.... As kids we followed up Galt to the River bank behind te Auditorium near the Boating Club,...and watched in awe of these weird looking little cars, drive right into the drink......it was quite something: .............................................................................hf&v
Those amphibian cars did not last long as they rusted in no time. I certainly woudn'nt feel secure in those contraptions. Guy
they're doing this in Toronto too, copied the idea.
Les that ship in the back ground looks like a great lakes ore carrier. Was the seaway opened in the 50s? Must have been huh.
Interesting picture.
Bill
The Seaway was started in the late 50's , Those amphicars, were at CKVL in the early 60's I think it was like 63 or64ish ? I agree that ship in the background does look like a GreatLakes Ship doesn't it. but that is not the Jacques Cartier bridge in that photo,.although it does look like it.

Guy
That's hilarious Guy , I like the sense of humour: hahahahaha "or would I " hahahaha HF&RV but your right here in Canada,it is now mandatory that anyone operating a boat has to have a license.....and out here on the Ocean, you better know what your doing & how to read charts & know the tides as well......also heed the warnings on the weather channel (marine channel actually)....cause if it says 'small craft warning' they are not kidding.....it's a mighty big ocean out there & trouble can be had very quickly if your not careful. HF&RV
Les Do you think they might have some other type of "Aqua Cars" in the Lacine Canal? HAHAHA Lad
They definetly had some that liked to park on the bottom. hf&rv
Les Good one Forgot CKVL had them.. Lad
With Remebrance Day hapenning tomorrow ,the next celebration is Christmas.......now how's that for a Yikes !!! Any of Our Montreal Members had a chance to visit the train Museum in StConstant ? They have this familiar old train,we all had a ride when we were kids. http://www.bonjourquebec.com/qc-en/05dec_exporail0.html Click on the above link & checkout the old Eaton's Train ...................We've posted other shots of this train in the past, but I thought this one was a different view,.... (besides the other pictures were of a 'deisel replica style engine'......maybe we'll post them again for Our Last Christmas here on MSN Groups. have fun & remember Verdun
Les Man this is a good one..just like yesterday or a few of them anyway. I have been to the museum but that was before this exhibit was there.Sorry I missed it. Thanks Les
Montreal became even more popular during the prohibition days,& was made famous also in a song written by Irving Berlin Speak easy,
(sh) Speak easy,
Said Johnny Brown;
I'm gonna leave this town,
Ev'rything is closing down.
(sh) Speak easy,
(sh) Speak easy,
And tell the bunch:
I won't go East, won't go West,
Got a diff'rent hunch:
Chorus 1:
I'll be leaving in the summer,
And I won't come back till fall,
Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
With a stein upon the table,
I'll be laughing at you all,
Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
I'm on my way, I'm on my way,
And I'll make whoop-whoop whoopee night and day.
Anytime my wifey wants me,
You can tell her where to call,
Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
Patter:
Yamo, yamo, I think I want a drink;
Yamo, yamo, there's water in the sink.
The sink, the sink, the sink, the sink, the sink;
The good old rusty sink;
But who the heck wants water when you're dying for a drink?
Chorus 2:
Oh, "We Won't Get Home Till Morning"
Is the best song after all,
Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
There'll be no more Orange Phosphates*,
You can bet your Ingersoll**,
Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
That old tin pail, that old tin pail,
Was never meant to carry ginger ale.
There'll be photographs of brew'ries
All around my bedroom wall,
Goodbye Broadway, hello Montreal.
Verse 2:
(sh) Speak easy,
(sh) Speak easy,
Asked Tommy Gray;
I must know right away,
Are the gals up there okay?
(sh) Speak easy,
(sh) Speak easy,
Said Johnny Brown;
You ain't been hugged, ain't been kissed,
Till you've hit that town: Hello Montreal .by Irving Berlin ......and the sing tributes Montreal's Women in the final verse................ "you ain't been higged, you ain't been kissed , -------'Till you've hit that town" HF&RV
Yikes after this many years ,you'd think I would check the spelling before posting.........hf&rv
