Good morning !
Two Verdun (?) old schools
Is there someone who remembers these schools and their locations ?
Links: two « presumably » Verdun old schools (photos taken in 1951)
The description of these schools is as follows:
Nous retrouvons les bâtiments d'écoles situées à Verdun, probablement l'챕cole Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire (E6,S7,SS1,P54655) et Saint-Thomas-Moore (E6,S7,SS1,P54656).
Thanks in advance,
JM

Hi Les ! Thanks for the big photos ... My guess is that the first photo (E6,S7,SS1,P54655) is an elementary school in Lasalle ??? (...and what about the make of the car in the first pic ?...) The second pic (E6,S7,SS1,P54656) would be (former ?) Ecole Margarita in Verdun (on Rielle, corner Champlain Blvd) ??? Maybe Guy or another member could give us some clues on these schools ? JM
Jim......Is the 2nd photo of a french school around 5th ave close to Beurling in Verdun? If I'm right,is their a prize involved? (smile) cookie
JM, the bottom picture is St. Thomas More elementary school on Moffat Ave, south of Beurling. I attended this school 1953-60. Ron Chapdelaine
Thanks to all ! So only the first photo remains to be described. JM
Hi Jim
I also wondered if the 2nd school was the nun run french school on
5th. We lived just behind there and played in the back of the school yard. I can't recall now what the front looked like but this may be it.

I am not familiar with these 2 schools and I don't recall seing any photos at the society. I will check tomorrow and once we have definitely identified them, the photos will be added to our archives. Guy
Hi guy & JMH & all others trying to figure this second school out,./but I believe it's the french grade school ,.that is close to or almost directly across from Allion grade School in the Bronx part of Lasalle ,...Allion is on Edward ,.and as far as I acn Remember the French School was very close to there but on the river side ( or lasalle Blvd side ) of Edward.......????? Me Thinks anyway.......................................... as for the car ,with that serious sloping roofline,.(JMH) I think it looks like it would be a 38-39 ish model of Chev,.......but I did look up other models such as Dodge (big in those days ) Ford & Chev......... it's the real torpedo back styling that is hard to make out ,at the distance in the photo...... but if the photo is credited at circa 1951,.then it's not likely that many a car would have survived 20 winters in 'Labelle Province' but it is possible : Where's all the car guys,...........have a guess ,....enquiring minds would like to know........................hahahahahhaah Have fun & remember Verdun
I thought that the picture looked like St Thomas More. Does anyone have the website for those pictures????
Hi Shirley ..........one of them is St Thomas Moore............... it's the other that is still to be determined..............................hf&rv

By early to bed I don't think he meant 5am in the morning like we were. lol
Great picture of an old bus. I think we got rid of all ours like that. Vancouver is now buying Nova's from Montreal. Where I work we won't be getting any of those, for we have the only natural gas hook up and many Natural Gas buses.
I always have a little concern in the back of my head that I'm driving a possible explosive device. lol

Hi onesmac,.......so you drive for BC Transit........neat..my first time on a bus in BC was during 1986 going to Expo86, it was easier than trying to find parking downtown,.........and then the next time I took a busride ,was last year to take some photo's downtown of Yates & Douglas intersection (here in Victoria) I took the pictures for JMH as he was asking about a photo he posted of a duble decker ,......and where it was: I have since taken several bus rides on those Double Decker Bus's ..and twice on a Nova....the drivers of the Nova ,both told me they really didn't like that Bus.......?? I still prefer my car,but it was somewhat neat ,to be able to look around & enjoy the area, without the need to constantly be on watch for traffic. How long have you been with the BC Transit ? & How long have you been in BC? hf&rv
Hi Les
I've been driving bus now for 17 long years. I started in 1991 and drove right downtown in Vancouver for five years then transfered to Poco transit to get out of the city, with all the traffic and drunks etc. Transit back in 86 in Vancouver was great and actually won an award for the best, most efficient transit system in North America. I have to say they'd be the losers now.
With the gas prices soaring, I'm noticing less cars on the road and more folks taking the bus and skytrain again.
I've been in BC now for 40 years. OMG how time flies! I left Montreal when I was 17 and hitchhiked across Canada to BC. It was meant as a trip, but I fell in love with the mountains and the beaches and stayed. I always miss Montreal and really appreciate Verdun Connections. I'm learning so much about Montreal I never knew.

hi Jim
I just read the attached that you sent me about violence in Toronto transit. It's really bad there. We often have people say things to us like "Nice to be paid high wages sitting on you butt". I guess that is all they can see, but we are always concerned with violence and other problems that come up on the job. We live with the F-U generation and they need to change the laws to adjust to the problems of this generation. We have it bad in Vancouver also but nothing near as horrid as what I just read. I've been driving for 17 years and have been lucky to avoid any form of violence. I'm pretty good at detecting a possible problem person and use common sense in dealing with them. I guess you could say I'm an easy bus driver. I never refuse a free ride to a stranded person, especially a girl or a youngster and if some dangerous looking person gets on my bus and ask for a free ride, hell I give it to them. There is no sense in putting yourself in a dangerous position. I work nights so you have to be more cautious and use logic when dealing with bus passengers, especially at night. I have many stories about driving if any one cares to hear them.
We have a driver who use to be a part time police officer, who was brutally attacked on his bus, all over 50 cents. He ended up in the hospital for two weeks and after two years is still traumatized by the event and has not returned to work. I went to view the court case and the one 20 year old they caught basically got off with a slap on the wrist. Even though a witness saw the two men running from the bus right after it happened, followed them and called the police, no one witnessed the beating so they got off.
There are also good things about our job, give me time I'll try to think up something. lol

I took the following photos this afternoon of the school at 1050 - 5th ave. and it is called: Centre Ãducatif des Adultes de LaSalle. I also found at the SHGV that this school was previously called: Ãcole Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes (filles). As you can see, this school does not resemble at all the two photos originally posted. Guy Central Building, view from the right Joined building to the right Separate building to the left View from the left of central building
Thanks for checking that out for us Guy, did you happen to go by on Edward in Lasalle ,as that's where I thought it might be: Maggie & JMH posted an address for it,......I believe it must be nice to be able to just go visit Verdun / Lasalle / or anywhere in Montreal................ We have to rely on failing memory's.... Thanks Again HF&RV
I think there is another french school between 5th and 6th Avenue. On Verdun Ave. I don't think it resembles the photo though..
Does anyone remember what year St Willibrord's boys school was torn down.
I remember attending David Fennario's play "Joe Beef, a History of Montreal" there in the early 80's (I think it was early 80's) - would appreciate a reply. Thanks.
Jo
Maggie, I will check out that school you mentioned. My goal with the society (SHGV) is to compile all the public buildings, schools, churches and other points of interest in Verdun. This is a long time project wich I am promoting and Verdun Connections has been a great help in achieving this goal. I have catalogued many photos many of wich are from VC. An example of the usefullness of this work is the visit we received at the society yesterday of 2 former Verdunites who now live in British Columbia and who are vacationing in the area. One of the gentlemen was looking for information on his father who was a teacher at VHS in the 30s. I got out our yearbooks for that period and found 2 group photos showing a picture of his father (Mr Flowers) also a text in the 1935 to 1939 years. Of course he made copies to take home to show to his family and to add to his family album. Needless to say, he was quite impressed. As for the other gentleman, he found the marriage of his parents at St Willibrord in our genealogical directories and made other interesting discoveries to his amasement. They have also consulted our albums photos of pictures of old and present Verdun. It is comforting to realise that all that work is now becoming usefull to former Verdunites who haven't forgotten their roots. Guy
Hi JoJo,.I'm not sure as to when they tore it down, but it was replaced with a lower profile school .and it was a French School which was built actually on the Willibrord Avenue side close to the corner of Verdun, where as the old Willibrord Boys school was (as you know) at the corner of Rielle & Verdun ,with it's main entrance being on Verdun Av... So I would guess that the building date of that new school ( assumming it's still there) might be right on the corner stone ,or at least it's address could be looked up in Lovell's maybe......I left Labell Province in the mid 70's & I think the old school was still there??? onesmac (Sandy) it sounds like you've had an interesting career so far,.& I'll bet you could tell some stories,,,,,,,Fire Away, I'd like to hear some of them.. My brother drove a Bus for Murray Hill in Montreal many many years ago, & I've heard some interesting stories ............. and if any of us Verdun Connection members ever get over to your area,Do we have to be drunk ,to get a free ride on the bus..............hahahahaha I can understand your trip across Canada,....I too had some sort of feeling of 'awe' the first time I saw the Mountains,....they are incredible, and I've yet to find teh right words to describe them .....I still love to look at the Mtns' covered with snowcaps,.....and just how small they can make a person feel, when you get right up close,........it seems like for a hundred miles as you approach the Mtns' from the East,.....all that anticipation of 'what they will be like'............and they certainly Do Not Disappoint............love them: It' funny I've tried to explain them to people over the years,..and they either 'get it' or they don't. hf&rv
Merci JM. I will take currant photos when in Verdun. Guy

To Les and everyone else,
If you ever get on my bus in Vancouver, I'll not only give you a free ride but a transfer to go along with it. lol.
Hi onesmac0 ! What make of bus are you driving these days ? Do you prefer New Flyer C40 or C40LF ? BTW, what is your all-time preferred make of bus ... and route ? Have a good day ! JM
The first school the picture looks like the school that used to be on Lasalle Blvd. between Gordan and Galt. I used to live on Lasalle Blvd and it does look the same. Linda Muney
Linda, This is the school that was on LaSalle Blvd, originally called the Model School then Jean Jacques Olier school. Guy
I think the lower school may be St. Thomas Moore Elementary, right down the street from the church, close to Beurling.
Hi JM,
I don't really know if I have a favorite bus. The New Flyer low floors are everyones favorite. I like the really old buses before they started putting in modern updated form fitted seats. My favorite bus route is the 160 from Port-Coquitlam to downtown Vancouver, basically for the view. It's a bit of a long route but you only have to do it three times and your shift is completed. They are starting to buy Nova buses from Montreal. Our garage have not received any yet. The comments I've received from drivers who have driven them, say the seating area is really uncomfortable for it's difficult to turn your head to check the fares, but the bus itself is great to drive.

Hi Les
it is very difficult to describe the first time you see the mountains from a distance. It's an overwhelming experience and my very first experience driving through the mountains was also frightening. Here's a little story.......
Right up to Alberta, we had wonderful rides from nice folks. Just at the beginning of the Mountains we stood for quite a while with our thumbs out when finally a car stopped to pick us up. The rugged looking man driving had already picked up two hitch-hikers, and we squeezed into the back seat with our bags. If it wasn't for the fact that we had waited so long for a ride, we wouldn't have excepted the lift, for this guy stunk of booze and drove like he had a few too many. He started to tell all of us that he was in da mood la to drive fast and if anything got in his way he'd run it off the road. He drove like a mad man and could barely stay on his side of the road. One wrong drunken maneuver and we could have dropped of the cliff , which was unbelievably close to the edge of the road and so high up you couldn't imagine where the bottom lay. I laughed at the idea (later) that we actually thought of Mt Royal as a mountain. If you have never driven through the Rockies, you haven't lived.
This guy finally went right out of his mind and tried to drive off the road after a deer that was resting behind a tree about ten feet away. Everyone was sitting in shock. I decided to get out so I told the guy I was going to be sick. He couldn't stop the wreck quick enough. I jumped out and so did everyone else. As the guy skidded off up the mountain, I noticed his license plate read "Quebec". haha. That was my first experience driving in the Rocky Mountains.

Here are photos of the St Thomas More Elementary School wich I took Saturday morning on my way to the SHGV. There are no noticeable changes on the outside compared to the 1951 photo JM posted except that there are several trees in the front preventing me from taking a good angle shot. Are there any members who went to this school if so, it would be interesting to receive some anecdotes to tie in with the photos. Guy

Are there any members who went to this school if so, it would be interesting to receive some anecdotes to tie in with the photos. Guy Okay Guy, here you go, anecdotes: The photo above is the front entrance of what was the “GIRLS” side. Elementary school was segregated back when I went (Started in 1963 or 62). I lived on Moffat, just a little down from the school. Close enough that I could here the first warning school bell in the morning, and still make it to the Boy’s side. Different angle of the same side. At one time, there was a black, wrought iron fence around the grassy area out front. Around the school yard (see below), there was the usual Frost Fence type, with Barbed Wire!! We must have been a trouble bunch of youth’s to require Barbed wire. Yet another angle of the same entrance – were you hanging around the ‘girls’ side for a reason, Guy? Just kidding. You are correct, those trees are quite big. I think they were planted after I left Verdun, I just don’t really remember them. Maybe they were just small back then , as you say. Also, those double doors were the emergency exit from the girls gym. Finally, girls side schoolyard. Plenty of stories here; spent more time in the school yards than I can remember. Plenty of ball games against the wall. On the very left edge, you can see a big blank wall. I think the game played there was called Stand-All. Note the bottom window’s along the main building. They were protected by a wire grate. In another area of the school yard, not shown, on the boys side, the hinges of one game off. It swung like a door. That is where I got thrown behind and then Bruce Menard kicked it against the wall, crushing my left arm. Had a cast from finger tip to shoulder for about 4 months, then a sling and strap for another 5 or 6. Crushed wrist, broken elbow and upper arm muscle; carried in by someone, probably a teacher. First time I rode in a Police car – front seat, with arm strapped to my side. Three days in the Verdun General. Luckily, no surgery and the arm is just fine. In the very corner of the school yard, there was a low wall – look at the bottom of the chimney. There was a big ledge on the section separating the concrete and the bricks. Often, it was just me, a tennis ball, and throwing it against the wall, trying to hit the ledge to make it pop up back to me; that is how I wasted my time, rather than studying. Other times we did it in groups and had contests and champion’s – but no names here, to protect the innocent. That’s it! I don’t get to write much, and I just wanted to spend some time thinking back. Thanks for posting the photos. Glenn
Nice breakdown Glenn & great recall,.funny how an old photo can bring you right back to the past.......& spark those memory banks into action. Funny you mention riding in the front of a police car ( for a change) I too got one ride in the front of a Verdun Police Car ,.after having my knoggan split open by a coke bottle........hahahahah We used to have a group of us that would form a big circle in the field at VCHS closer to Beaurling than the school,.and we would spiral a coke bottle (which flew nicely ) when tossed properly, and we catch it & get rid of it keeping the game going, then we got pretty good at it and started to toss 2 bottles to anyone in the circle while moving and running around ,& one day both bottles came my way, I grabbed one but the other one was already on it's way,and so trying to duck out of the way,I ducked but the to no avail the bottled whacked me off the melon, and started a cool but red flow over my head and face, So I got to use the Police Callbox across the street, and so came the 'gendarmes' to give me a ride for stitches...................hahahahah My one & only time in the 'front seat' of a squad car..................I won't bother telling any tales of the times in the back of one.........hahahahahah and there were several.................................have fun & remember Verdun
This is the corner of Fayole and Churchill wich would be the local of the old École Notre Dame de la Victoire. Guy
Glenn, Thanks for your comments. This is exactly what we like to hear. Guy
Guy, The least I can do for you, considering all you do for this site. Your photo's are great as is your history. You mentioned a magazine in your post on the Ferry. Can I subscribe? I am in the good old US of A :) Best, Glenn
