1 – 200 of 225 Newer› Newest»Hi Jim Nairn; We are approx. the same age. I lived on LaSalle Blvd. between Willibrord & Rielle, then moved to 292 Willibrord Ave. accross from the Church, thence to Moffat Ave. Attended St. Willibrord's elementary & High School although 4th & 5th grades were on the top floor of the French school on 5th ave. & Verdun. Remember ladies fastball at Woodland Park in fact I have often wondered where some of these girls are now, e.g., "Tootsie" Thompson, Lorainne Thomas (catcher), etc. Must run, but will be back on-line shortly. Martin Sullivan
Hey Martin, do you remember what your address was? Maybe we moved into your house on LaSalle Blvd. We lived at 4465 (bottom flat) from around 65.
Loretta Supple was another one and I beleive Les
Elson was involved with girls softball. Margo
Maggie, I do not recall our LaSalle Blvd. address but I will do some homework with other kin & search some old photos. I know of a photo taken of younger twin brother & sister in front of the house which I think may show the address. The house was adjacent to a candy store which I beleive folded after we left & was also directly across from the fire & police station. We moved to Willibrord street approx. 1940-42. Does anyone know the whereabouts of any of the following persons who would be in their sixties at least. Don Snow - 1st Ave just north of Verdun Ave. Dunston Briggs - 6th Ave between Verdun/Bannintyne(Banjo/Geo. Formby type entertainer) Don Kervin -2nd Ave. Alec Dandridge - Gordon Ave south of Verdun Ave I have many others that I would like to find & will provide a list at a later date as well as some old photos I will try & dig up Writing this almost makes me think that this web site could use a missing persons board which of course would probably fill the web site. Be in touch shortly. Martin. S.
Geez , can't believe no interest to speak of , why Verdun is US , come on lets hear from all , I am just up, 6 am , another day that I have to spend in Montreal, poor me, hahahaha, I just love this city, anything anyone wants to know , why just ask, I know the city very well, having worked all my life in the elevator business, today going to be a bit of rain and 15c, tomorrow 15 and sunshine, sunday 18 and sunshine, Will go to Magog tomorrow and make sure the ice is out on the lake for fishing in the future and guess will be forced to go to Blue Bonnetts for Sunday and watch the horses, boy I love to watch horse racing, I feel so lucky to wake up and I am in Montreal, What A City, now the rest of you, get a few words in here, lets make this site rock and roll , have great weekend , Jimmy

Just dropped by to say hello. I moved to Brampton about 25 years ago. Just
wondering how many verdunites are in the Brampton area now? I graduated in
'71 from VHS. It would be nice to see a few "old" friends from the island.
Jimmy, I like the ponies too. Have a few Standardbred horses, but mostly in
the Ontario Stakes Races.
Hope to hear from someone soon.

Hi Folks , rain but warm here in Montreal, grass is growing and flowers sprouting , its so nice in this great city, its busy busy busy, can't even find a place to park downtown on weekends so much going on, I will shortly take a stroll down Wellington Street from one end of Verdun to the other and report in, if anyone wants anything checked out , just type me a message here, lets keep in touch, after all comming from Verdun is probably one of the best life experiences possible. I love the horses Willie, I actually spent 10 years with Mario Baillargeon and his dad on their farm, so know a lot about horses, used to finish work and out to the barn to help out, probably 5 or 6 days a week , not much of a gambler , but sure love the nags, keep in touch Willie, and the rest of you , come on type something in here , why we are Verdunites, Jimmy
Hi Tony remember when we used to call Woodland Park CEMENT DOWNS , and the zoot suiters during the war, at the Pavillion, them were the days, I sure loved my upbringing in Verdun . Jimmy
I remember eating salami burgers at the Pavillion?
I also got my sister-in-law, nephew and niece hooked on them.I also remember the
zoot zooters.I was brought up on 3rd ave.
Margo
Willie: I live on Sutherland (Madoc Section) having moved here in 1977, just after Rene Levesque was voted as my MNA in St. Hubert. My daughter lives on Ashton Ct. and McKay. I don't suppose you play ball - our three-pitch team is always looking for young talent to prop up the squad, in that the average age is about 50. We have plenty of catchers and first basemen, but not many outfielders who can actually run and catch a ball in the same action. I've posted some photos (actually Maggie did) of my Verdun. Gord
Hi Jim. I lived at 835 3rd ave. Maybe you knew my brother Stan or my sisters, Shirley and Maureen. My brother Stan married Muriel Latimer that lived in the 300(?) blocked on 3rd. I am 62 years old and I left Verdun in 1960 to join the U.S. Marines. I returned in 1964, then returned to the US in 1972. S/Winston Allison. Also did you know Ronnie Coleman?
type in to search engine , www.montreal.com interesting Jim
Well unshine and 24 today 25 tomorrow 20 tuesday 21 Wednesday, now this is Montreal , going way up north fishing in one weeks time, to a place called Parent Quebec, trout of course , 250 miles north of here, why living here is still a paradise , hang tough be good, and come on type in a bit of news . Jimmy
Hi, I'm a Verdunite who has also been in and around the Brampton area since 1974. Graduated in 1970 from VHS. You can take the girl out of Quebec, but not Quebec out of the girl!! Parents and other family still in and around Montreal area so I visit fairly often. Still miss the ambience and joie de vivre of Montreal, not to mention the European flavour of the city, and the food!!! Have 2 daughters who both went to French Immersion until grade 8, then went to Mayfield, one in the arts program (drama) and the other in the regular program. Both long graduated now, but Mayfield was a great school and French Immersion was a wonderful way to stay in touch with the French language. From other boards, it would seem there are a fair number of ex-Verduners in the west-end of the GTA if not specifically in Brampton. We should have a mini-reunion for all ex-VHSers in this area....and no, I am not volunteering to coordinate it, but I would attend in a heartbeat. Happy Victoria Day weekend to all, Pam Hyde
HEY- KUNGFU KUNGFU THANKS, FOR GIVING MEMORIES, OF THE PAST. I LIVED ON WOODLAND AVE AS A KID, NEAR THE CORNER OF WELLINGTON STREET, THERE WAS A BUS TERMINAL, ON THE BOARDWALK WAS A LARGE BUILDING WERE EVERYONE GOT THERE HOT DOGS, FRIES, I USED TO HEAR THE MUSIC AT NITES, EVEN SEEN THE ZOOT SUITERS, THERE USED TO BE A RESAURANT ON A CORNER THAT SOLD THESE BIG POPSICLES THEY WERE HOME MADE, BIG SUCKERS, 5 CENTS IN THOSE DAYS, IN FRONT OF THE BOARDWALK, I WONDER IF ANYBODY REMMEMBERS.
Hi Bear, I sure do and the girls used to play softball in back towards the river and the boardwalk, if I remember correctly the tramway used to turn around at Woodland, wonderful memories, the boardwalk, how could any Verdunite forget the boardwalk , used to pull the wire off of the track and run like hell case the conductor gave us a boot you know where , I went to a school , called Lasalle Road School, top of Grodon and Lasalle blvd. if I remember, Principal was Mr Laroque , did 7 years there, memories, of walking home for lunch and back, used to get milk in the morning , through the lanes, no troubles then as there are now for sure. Jimmy
HEY- KUNGFU THE GIRLS PLAYING SOFT BALL, FOR SURE, I USED TO ENJOY THAT POPSICLE, WATCHING THE GIRLS RUN WHEN THEY HIT A HOME RUN. THE MILK STORY, WHEN WE WERE KIDS, THEY USED TO GIVE US MILK IN THE PLAYGROUND EVERYDAY, I ALWAYS WONDERED WHY???. 1 REASON -I WAS TOLD, THAT ALL THE YOUNG KIDS WERE LOSING THERE TEETH, I REMEMBER MYSELF THAT LOTS OF MY FREINDS AT 14 YEARS OLD, HAD FALSE TEETH.- THAT DENTIST ON WELLINGTON STREET ABOVE THE BARBER SHOP, YOU JUST GO THERE WITH 5 BUCKS FROM THE OLD MAN, GIVE THE MONIES TO HIM, SIT ON THAT CHAIR, WITH FEAR, ALL HE KNEW WAS TO PULL TEETH. TODAY IT'S A PLEASURE TO VISIT A DENTIST.
I know the dentist you are talking about. I was just telling my wife about him the other day. If it is the same one, he had a big St. Bernard dog that just sat there day after day and didn't move when you walked in.s/Winston Allison

Dr. Maillot! Do you think he is still there? Planting fear in the minds of ..................
I am pretty sure the Dentist's name was Dr. Mollet, He also made house
calls. There was no flouride in the water, which explains a lot of missing
teeth.

That's the dentist. I doubt if he is still there. I remember going to him about 45 years ago. I can say that from the experience we each had with him, he is still causing fear in each of us. Ah, the good old days.

hey- dewline, kungfu great to hear the stories, you guys didn't get older you guys got wiser. do i remember kik cola, the milk wagon and horse going down woodland for delivery. dewline i remember the poor times, yet we were wealthy in other ways?? short true story to share as a kid, a few of us had a bike, but some of us had a 4 wheel wagon, remember those wagons??? you fellows must of seen those wagons lined up in front of steinberg, domminoin, grocery stores??? you guys maybe did the same thing, as i did and others. back then you had to learn to make a buck, to get a hockey stick, fishing rod, steamie, frie, kik etc, we would line up our wagon in front of the grocery store, go inside and ask the mom's to deliver there order for 25 cents. you would give them first class service, cause they will remember next time, it was hard work i'll tell you, you load up the wagon with the grocery boxes, and pull the wagon down the avenue hoping that mom lives on the ground floor??? most of the time you had to carry those heavy boxes, 2 storey of stairs. after the job, the mom would give you the 25 cents, sometimes a extra dime tip!! then you run like hell, pulling that wagon back to get in line for your next order, after a hard day of work, you make about 1.50. tax free??? this way you always had money in your pocket. it was a blessing, at that age, we were young business men, dealing with people. selling a good service, for a good price. today i'm doing the same type of work giving a customer a service which they are looking for. at the end of the year i donate monies, to harvest house, myself sober for over 22 years, and other insitiutions.-- you have to give to get back, i learnt this the hard way. thanks again wise fellows, for giving me this important memory to share.
Remember the guy with the sharpening wheel, peddling down the laneways. Sharpening Scissors and knives.
I remember the Marathon Bakery, I was very young, that was before Grover's Store, corner third and Wellington, the sweets used to be delivered in the lane ever other day, we used to sneak up on the truck and when the driver made his deliveries, we would swipe a couple of Jelly doughnuts, they would leak in our pockets , and my mother used to wonder why my pockets were always so hard, hahaha, the Jelly spilling out , I am sure the driver left that tray near the dorr for us to take, cause he did it all the time. Hey gang, rememeber the Mellow roll of ice cream? used to have to take the cardboard off of the outside, think it was called the Mellow roll, well 3 days and Off I go fishing way up Northern Quebec , trout ,, getting antsy now, bye have great week-end Jimmy
hey- maggie i remember, the guy, ringing that bell, he got me and my buddy in big trouble. in those days the dad's wore them thin leather belts, boy they hurt, the strap from school was a joke. back to the sharpening guy, me and my buddy took the 58 bus, to notre dame, army surplus store, and we both got 2 ww11 long army bayonets, later in verdun, we went to the sharpening guy, and asked him to sharpen the bayonets, he took them away from us, and told us to fu7k off nicely. later than evening the cops came to the door and asked were these bayonets came from, the next day we forgot about bayonets, but didn't forget the sharping guy. we weren't little angels back then, worst than the little rascals, getting in trouble was a normal way of life for us then. i wonder at times, were those little rascals buddy's are, they have stories to tell, which is all fun. those lane ways, sheds, boardwalk, river, wellington st, saturday morning at the savoy theatre, i remember the girls would go go dance on stage, before the movie started. maggie- started the layout and foundation, it's the people on the sidelines, to jump in. a friend informed me about this site, which i haven't met in over 30 years, in person. maybe she was one of the girls dancing on the savoy theatre stage ,before the movie started, chitti chitti bang bang, 1000 leagues under the sea. some may like my stories, that bring back memories, some may not like the stories. so i'll stop and be on the sidelines and see who will jump in. thank you fatboy
geez I sure remember lining up with my coaster, corner of Verdun ave. and 5th, think it was a Steinberg store, then used to go to Thrift Stop and shop, used to help a man with a horse and wagon deliver groceries wow has time every changed jimmy
DON'T FORGET THE ROLLER SKATE SKOOTER,, A 2X4 NAILED TO THE BOTTOM OF A ORANGE CRATE,, WITH YOUR SISTERS ROLLER SKATE CUT IN HALF, FASTENED TO THE BOTTOM AND WAAY WE WENT DEWLINE
WERE IS HE WHEN YOU NEED HIM,,, A HUMBLE AND HARD WORKING MAN THEN DEWLINE
Pam: My wife (Karen Ingram) graduated in 1970 also. Do you know her? Gord
What about the coliseum on Guy St for roller
skating,Mount Royal for skiing trying to beat the streetcars on your
skis?
Margo
Gord,
I guess I should check the e-mails a little more often :)
At 49 I am not sure I would drop the average age by much LOL. Actually, I
have a pretty busy schedule in the summer.
I did get countrygirl's reply to the e-mail, so maybe an impromptu reunion
is in order. My mother-in law lives on Ashton as well. I was a Beaver Leader
at HF Laughlin School for a few years. Archdeacon & Vodden.
Any place to recommend? I go up to the FIRKIN on Queen occassionally, they
are friendly. Let's see how many Bramptonians are ex-Verdunites !

Yes I too remember the Dominion Store deliveries. I lived at 122 Third Ave.
and lined up to deliver groceries, hoping not to have to go to the third
floor. I would eye the "Rich" ones, where I knew there would be an extra
dime in it for me. Sometimes I would walk all the way to Steinbergs at
Willibroad and Wellington, if there were too many at Dominions. As I got
older I started to deliver for Bannantyne Pharmacy (between Richard and
Godin).
Some interesting stories about delivering cigarettes and other "Supplies" to
addresses that were actually laneways.

Oh yeah, I used to deliver for Bannantyne Pharmacy too. Stuart Woods' mother
used to work there too. Was 50 cents an hour. I remember riding my bike in
winter slush making deliveries. Use to love seeing the looks on people's
faces when I delivered the condoms I ordered. Eddy Lafrance (Ian Clyde's
uncle) got a job there painting the place. He used to go carousing and
drinking and chasing skirts with the part time pharmacist
there........Michel. They both used to brag of their exploits to us.
Ian Clyde went on to be a boxer, even was in the Olympics.
Not bad for a little kid running (hop/skip actually) up Godin St. wearing
that leg brace as a kid of 10 or 12 yrs old.

hey- steve i know the pharmacy, i've seen the bike parked, along side of adams shoe repair, it even may have been willie's bike also. i knew stuart wood, back then, i also remember ian's uncle, he used to time to time hang out at the hemlock taxi stand, just around the corner, they were all drinking out of brown paper bags, listening to the dispatcher from there taxi radio's, for the next pickup. back then we all had our own group of freinds, and mostly stayed that way, we knew ian , yet he wasn't in our gang. short story back then, in our group of buddies, was stanley royston, i'm sure that lots on this site knew the royston family, the whole family loved boxing and all were in it big time.they were all good, mr royston if i remember rite, was a pro boxing trainer, at the golden gloves in the point. stanley at time was very fast and tough, i'll tell you.stan's dad trained him etc, stan started to become known, he won all the time, yet stan just didn't want to continue, if stan still stayed on 10 to 1 odds he would of been at the olympics, with ian and most likely won. if ian read this, he would agree with me. one day stan was telling us that his dad took ian under his wing, we were all surprised on the news, mr royston to train ian, ian has to be good, cause mr royston wouldn't waste his time.we may be wrong but we were the first to know about ian's boxing start. also another person was into boxing big time, the fireman- mr deegan , he may of helped ian also. we are all proud of ian, at the time he put verdun on the map. thank you fatboy
hey - mugsy that's sweet you girls sure had alot of talent on that stage. us little rascals enjoyed the show also we had to watch ourselves, the red coats we called them, any wrong move they would come and kick us out the exit door.
Hello all! I remember delivering groceries with my wagon at Steinbergs also. You always new which one were the good tippers and which ones weren't. So yiou rush to the good tippers. We had a guy there that tried to get all the good tippers,so one day we all got together and gave him ex-lax (he thought it was chocolate). Well a couple hours later ,we didn't have to worry about him......lol. I also delivered beer and groceries from Curries and son's.Some stories there i tell ya. I lived on Manning avenue. We move out West in 1979 and now reside in Lethbridge,Alberta. If any thinks they know me they can email me at tatoo_38@hotmail.com
Hi Gord, Yes I knew Karen -- we were not close friends, but we knew each other in school. If I am thinking of the right person, I believe she was blond/light brunette, was about my height (5 foot-ish), and wore her hair about chin length, with bangs. She was soft spoken.....do I have the right person? Pam
Hi Pam: You've got the right Karen. If you have your 1970 yearbook, she's in there. If you have your1967 yearbook (likely your first), I'm in that one. I've got yearbooks from 1964 to 1970 inclusive which makes it kind of handy. Gord
Damn, I had forgotten about Adam shoe store..........
wonderful smell in there, we all got our skates sharpened there too.
And yep, the green bike chained to the mini fence next to Adam's was mine.

That would be fantastic, please be my guest, I am very PROUD of Verdun and my upbringing, one thing it taught us was togetherness Jimmy
Well , last two weeks hot and humid , wow, but today clearing out and supposed to be beautiful week with sun and no humidity, how has everyones summer gone, been so fast here in Montreal, hardly had time to relax, what a vibrant city, keep in touch . Jim Nairn
Just checked the weather on the net for the next week 22 to 24 c during the day and 10 to 12 at night for the next week , sunshine every day, don't you all wish you were here? Septemeber is such a spectactular month in Montreal, leaves starting to turn and nights cool to sleep , wow , so glad to be a Verdunite, come on gang sign in here and let us know whats up with your lives Jimmy aka Kungfu
Well Jimmy, as much as I agree with you that Montreal, and especially Verdun IS a wonderful city, sometimes there comes a time when you have to break ties for one reason or another. :-) Here in the beautiful misty Shenandoah Valley in Virginia the weather will be the same as you just forecasted for Montreal too. The leaves haven't really started turning color here yet, but when they do its an awesome sight, cuz each day the mountains change---The colors start slowly at the bottom of the mountains and work their way up to to peaks. And when they do, that's the time to take a Drive along "Skyline Drive" to see the leaves in all their glory. We are lucky, we live 5 mins. away from Skyline Drive, can actually see 3 of the lookouts from our farm. But thousands of people travel for hours to see this wonder of nature and gladly pay 7$ a car to travel the route that runs thru Shenandoah National Park at 4500 feet. (I'll post pics in a few minutes) I know tho, that thousands of people do that to see the Eastern Townships' colors in the fall too. Hell, never mind the Eastern Townships...just go to the lookout on Mount Royal in the fall and see the view from there....it's SPECTACULAR. I'm so glad to have this group to keep me in touch with Montreal and others who know it and love it as I do. Luv, Sharon *
Well here it is Sept 21st, going to be warm 22c and another beautiful week ahead with few showers , average temperature around 22 and 12 , what a place to live. Have read may posts and hey, your right we are living memories here not todays world, but beautiful meories for sure, why reading through , who would not have wished to be brought up around our little corner of the world , have wonderful week and post your weeks agenda here once in a while Jimmy
I had a Chemistry Prof at Loyola in the early 70's named Jerry (or Gerry) Trudell. I wonder if that was the same guy?
Willie are you referring to my post? My old friend from 2nd Avenue
Jerry Trudell, went to Willibrord, and worked for Allied Chemical. His
wife is named Marna. I've lost touch with him in the early 70s. Thanks
for responding.
Bill Cooper
ArialCCCC,6666,0000
Hey Bill,
I might be able to get some info regarding Jerry & Marna. I haven't had contact with them since the mid 70's myself, but my cousin Gail Wright (Lane), was close friends and might know... I'll see what I can find out for you.
Alan
Hey Alan, how is it going.
Thanks Alan, I didn't know Gerry Trudell that well, just a prof but maybe a small world. btw I know Gay Wright from Verdun who now lives in Mississauga. Any relation to Gail?
Hi Willie,
I don't recognize the name Gay Wright. My "Ontario" family are McNiff, Mack & Kusznireckyj in Toronto/Mississauga/Oakville area & Archibald in London. I'll be up in Montreal in a couple of weeks and check with Gail to see if that is an inlaw of hers.
Regards,
Alan
Hi friends, just got back from a weeks hunting in the eastern Townships, boy what a beautiful area, got home just ahead of 25 cm's of snow ,now have to get into the Christmasmood, have great day and be kind to each other Jimmy
Morning folks, great to wake up in Montreal, love reading your stories, would be interesting if folks signed in here more often, see if someone takes the time to send a message it would be nice to know that others are reading it, just click on recommend on top of page then we know it is being read, have a wonderful day, no matter where you are, after all you are Verdunites, that means a lot Jimmy
Well 9 degrees and sunshine, now thats Montreal for you, after watching the outdoor hockey game in Edmonton , minus 27 weather , sure glad to be here it was nice to see the oldtimers out there in force ,we are very fortunate people to live in Canada me thinks, and being ex and present Verdunites why that's the icing on the cake, now come on dont be so lazy sign in here, often, so we realize your interested , Jimmy
Well supposed to get first snow this afternoon, would'n t you know it , coming from Toronto , Geez, off I go to walk the dog, keeps me in shape , have wonderful weekend and enjoy Jimmy P S make a habit of signing in here , then we know some people are interested ,jim
Margo
What a beautiful day, snow, cold, fantastic, remember up and down the lanes when it snowed , pushing plows on rinks to be able to skate, and in those days when they did not take the snow away, making huge piles in the lanes and jumping off of balcony's into 6 feet of snow over and over again, getting home numb , but rosy cheeks and ready to go again after supper , boy those were and are the days, have great week friends, and report in here, it gets lonely thinking I am posting and no one is reading, hang tough Jimmy
Hi, am reading but feeling very nostalgic. I wasn't born in Verdun, but Ville Emard. Went to school at VHS and had friends and family in Verdun and Crawford Park. Now live on West Wet Coast, and love reading and reminiscing about "the good old days". Keep on writing, I'll keep on reading! So glad I found this board.
Hi Mom, Glad to hear you enjoy this group. It is a great group and it is fun to read the messages that are posted. You should let us know a little more about you, maybe some of us were your neighbors, friends, classmates etc, etc. Although you don't have to let us know anything if you are not comfortable with it. It is nice to know who has found their way to Verdun Connections and what the connections is even if it is only the enjoyment of having the chance to read about some good old times and places from your childhood or youth. I left and returned and will more than likely stay until the end. Have a good evening. Dannyb-
Margo
Here's a promise , one day next week will drive to Curch and Wellington , leave car and walk to Woodland along Wellington and back along Verdun avenue, anything anyone wants me to check out let me know, thats a promise , hang tough Jimmy
tell me when and i'll walk with you chuck
let me know if Normans Hot Dog restaurant is still there. It used to be on Verdun Avenue between 3rd and 4th. I ate many a supper there growing up on 4th Avenue Thanks
I'll take the rain and wet snow anytime. Last night (wednesday) at 10:00 PM Winnipeg time it was minus 41. No that is not a mistake -41. The high today was -24
Seeing what other people have just seems to make yours look a lot better ???
this is probably a really dumb question but is Grovers still in business ?? I
Anybody remember the A&W Drive-In. I believe it used to be on Church, tho not sure. They used to deliver your order and hang it on your window. Surely it must have been one of the first A&W's in Canada.
Yes it was on Church. Not far from the river. Anyone remember the 1st Kentucky Fried Chicken in Verdun. They had a very big sale when they opened. It was packed for days.
Winterize your home with tips from MSN House & Home.
Grover's still going strong, chuck will give you a call, try to find nice day next week Jim
Those Norman's were all over the place. I remember the one on Verdun Ave between 3rd and 4th, also one on Verdun and Hickson, and another on Bannantyne near Argyle. They were cheap and great tasting. I took my wife back to Montreal a couple of times. She just loves the steamies, and of course the french fries.
Tired of slow downloads and busy signals? Get a high-speed Internet connection! Comparison-shop your local high-speed providers here.
of all the things we still miss from Verdun are the
steamies and fries from Lafleurs. They have never heard of a steamie or michigan
hot dog with sauce and onions here in Winnipeg. My wife and I joke about this
all the time. ALso MIke's submarine shops. Do they still exist. There used to be
one at Wellington and Church
Hey Mom 1945;
I used to go to the A & W driveinn. I always ordered the Papa Burger.
Yummmmy. The only A & W's I know of now are one at the Dorval Airport
Terminal, and a new one on St. Jacques, also known to some as Upper Lachine
Road. I don't know why though, it's the N.D.G. area!

Oh I can SO relate hehe and I've only been in Virginia since June hehe. There ARE steamies and fries here but they just aren't the same by a long shot. The first time I asked for a "Pogo" I was looked at like I had 2 heads...they are called corn dogs here and "Michigans" are chili dogs. I miss poutines too...gastronomic heart attacks or not LOL. I brought like 10 packets of potine sauce so I could make my own at home but you can't find those cheese curds anywhere! I've substituted mozarella in their place, but again...it's not the same. By the way, when I left Verdun in June, Mike's Subs was STILL at the corner of Church and Wellington! The ULTIMATE thing that I miss from Montreal is Buffalo Bill's hot wings....oh what I would do for just ONE right now! My 2 oldest kids will be coming to Virginia next Saturday to spend Xmas with us...does anyone think that my daughter could get away with bringing an order of those wings in a container with a freezer pack in a bag? If she put it in her carry-on luggage do you think the airport would let her bring it? I'm SERIOUS! LOL What do ya think? Luv, Sharon *
Hi Brenda, Everybody I know calls it Upper Lachine Rd.only where the strip of Motels and the Rosebowel Lanes are. And where abouts is the new A&W, there was one near the boweling lanes when I got my car in 1971 it was neat sitting there with my 1965 MGB eating a Teenburger waiting for Mr. Alanarchi to show up in that hot 1968 Mustange GT Fastback. Those were the days.
I remember it as Upper Lachine Road also. Wasn't there also a place called a "round house" where the trains used to go. My dad worked there. The building had a sort of turntable in it and the engines could be turned around without problem. Does anyone remember the hill called "The Glen" where the buses used to go on their route uptown (or was it downtown)....geez when you get old the senior moments come more often. Cheers Linda.
kungfu, drop into pats mens wear and say hello to brian and
barry from dave perrotte in edmonton alberta.thanks
Hey Virginia;
wings I think are fine but they're not allowing Christmas Fruit CAke on the
flights. Apparently, someone could hide something inside and the cake is so
dense that the x-ray machine cannot see through it.

LOL! I believe it I BELIEVE IT!! :-P Truth be known tho...I love fruitcake. Yes I AM going to try to get my daughter to bring me some wings, the worst they can do is confiscate it on her, but as my hubby said "They aren't going to consider CHICKEN WINGS a dangerous weapon! hehe" I will let you guys know if I got them when they get here in FIVE DAYS!!! YESSSSSSSSS!! I'm not excited much. :-P Haven't seen them since our wedding at the beginning of August, so I'm anticipating a wee bit, ok? hehe Luv, Sharon *

Hi Jeanne, I also went to Bannantyne in those years!! What is your last name,,,,we may have been in the same class. Mrs. Forbes was my teacher in grades 1,2, and 7. She died halfway thru the year of cancer. She was an awesome teacher!! The other teachers that I remember were Miss Stacey, Miss Friedman, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Fabb. Take care, Mike
I had Mrs Martin for grade 7 teacher , LaSalle Road school, wow long time ago, Now jeannie I will be 67 in February , feel like a young buck , so your just a kid, hahahaha come on pals sign in, its going to rain here today and then down goes the temperature again, been kinda funny weather rain snow rain snow, but still lots on the ground, the laurentians are covered in deep snow , so great for the skiers, I will still walk Verdun after the New Years Promise, keep in touch and be kind to yourselves , only come this way once Jimmy
Jimmy. It looks like there are more than a few of us that had Miss Martin in grade 7 at Bannantyne School. You are turning 67. I turned 63 in October. We had some really good teachers. It is a shame we did not appreciate them when we were going to school. But they sure give us good memories today, in retrospect. Have a great week. Winston Allison

has anyone actually joined this Classmates. I went
browsing through the site and it looks to me like someone just entered the
graduation year and name of everyone the went to that school you search in. Does
each person really have an email address or has someone just populated the field
with every name available. Can someone advise from first hand
experience
Hi papa3times, I am not a paid member of classmates though it does seem to be legit in some ways. I registered my email address early in 2003 and it took about a week or two that I got a email from alanarchi of verdun connections who inturn got my email from classmates. Alan and I were friends and lost touch with each other about 28 years ago. I had tried to locate him on many occasions and had no luck. he was living in the United States and I was living here in Montreal & Calgary and never thought about him living in Boston, If it had not been for classmates I don't know if we would have contacted each other at all. In my opinion it would more than likely be worth every penny of the membership if you see people from the past and would like to reconnect with them. Dannyb--
I did not actually join,(pay the annual fee), but did put my name and info on there. It is a popular site, but I think very few actually pay the annual fee. If you do see someone you know and want to contact them, you have to pay the fee. Then the person you are trying to contact, also has to pay a fee if the want to respond to you. Winston Allison
Get reliable dial-up Internet access now with our limited-time introductory offer.
Hi winnie, I never had to pay any fee when alanarchi got in contact with me. they gave him my email I believe and that was it. I will have to ask him how it works. Dannyb--
The Classmates used to be free at one time, but they have since gone pay. Probably around 2000 or so. Once they went to pay, you can post your name, but if you want to send or receive any messages you have to pay the registration. Its okay if you just want to be a lurker. Cheers and Happy New Year...Linda
Hi, I posted a picture in VHS of Grade 8 (1958/59). Wonder if anyone recognizes somebody. Cheers.
my wife is in the picture posted by Mom 19451.
First row, second from left, Susan Pilon. We started dating in grade 9. Anyone
know anyone else in the photo??
Hi, Wasn't sure if it was the same Susan. I am front row, third from left, right next to Susan. Any other VHSers out there?
Yes I am a paid up mamber of Classmates,it is
legit.
My name is Margo Allen from Third Ave, married name
is Cardy.Let me know if you want me to email someone.
Margo
Hi Danny,
My brother Bob has a paid subscription with ClassMates. It was through his account that I was able to get your address and reach you. He has been able to contact some of his friends as well. My feeling is that it is really worth it and I do plan on subscribing myself in the very near future. ike you said, 28 years we had both been trying to find out what the heck happened to each other and in a very short time, we were able to connect and pretty much pick up where we left off. Works for me!
Best Regards,
Alan
I agree. I was able to connect with the Leonardo brothers, Gordon,
Larry, and Ron. from 3rd Avenue this way. Classmates is a honest useful
site, but there is no BBS to post messages so 'everyone' can read them.
Verdun Connections has that ability and we have Margo to thank for it.
B.C.
Hi, There is a message board at Classmates, but you can only post if you have a paid subscription. Anyone can read the messages though. At least that is my understanding.
I'm a paid subscriber and I have yet to find this board. I am not
denying your observation, but which button do I hit on the Classmates'
site?
B.C.
Hi B.C. When you log on to the site, there will be a yellow box "Welcome to Verdun High School". Scroll down to the third white box "Verdun High School Message Boards". When you click on this you'll be in the message boards.
Bill....do you mean that we have "Maggie" to thank for it, maybe? :-) She is the founder of Verdun Connections. Or did Margo lead you to this site, and that's why you are thanking her? :-) Luv, Sharon *
Nobody ever mentions Ivan Livingston,,he taught at V.H.S.
Hi Dewline, If you check out the VHS picture, top row, second from left, is his sister Joy Livingstone.
Correction...I believe the name is Iris Livingstone.
The guy im talking about was Ivan Livingston,,a Black man who also played football for the Alouettes,, both my younger sisters had him as a teacher>>>
I dont know he was a black man and also played football for the Montreal Alouettes, same time as Bob Geary
Hi Chuck,
Did you know a Bruce Marshall that was a trainer or coach for the Als? He was a member of the Shriners Bagpipes & Drums Band that I, and my brother Bob play with.
Happy New Year!
Alan Archibald
Yep >>nice guy and Johnny Singer who led the Oreiental band, the late john singer
Bruce worked as a Phys Ed teacher here in Massachusetts and retired a couple of years ago. He moved up to New Hampshire so we don't see him that often anymore , but he stays in contact the guys. I don't know of John Singer, but I do know John Hawkins from the Point... the present Potentate at Karnak. My great uncle is a past potentate of Karnak as well.
Alan
Hi Danny,
I don't think we've ever met but for the record I'm Alan's brother and in Boston as well. I'm a paid member in Classmates and it's great. I've met up with friends I haven't seen since the late fifties from VHS. It's $30.00 well spent. Just thought I would jump in, Take care Bob Archie
I've been in touch with Ivan Livingstons brother Dennis who lives in Toronto. And another brother George is living in LA. All because of Classmates. Bob Archie
Hi Bob, It was your classmates membership that put Alan and I back intouch with each other after so many years. It has been great seeing Alan and Mary after so long and to meet Laura & Stacy and I will eventully get to meet Shannon also. Alan has a great family and it has been a real enjoyment getting together with them. We may have met at their wedding it must be 30 years ago now my memory is not that good. I believe you worked with my uncle Frank Brunke at one time he also had a long carreer in the elevators. Alan has spoken about you many times when we hung around in the 70's and still does. Thanks for the connection and have a great New Year. Dannyb--
Wow theres a name from the past, Frank Brunke,,grew up on Ryde st in the point across the street from George and Raymond Norman, George lives out here in Hemmingford is a neighbour of mine,, Frank was a electronic whiz, helped me out on a few occassions, with a stuborn elevator,, used to see him on the weekends at the CowPalace, Rouse Point N.Y., he had a trailer there probably still does
dewline,
But one word caught my eye, Hemmingford. Although I know very little of it, the place holds a special part of memories past and still to come.
should you be receptive i desire to comunicate further on the subject of.
until then farewell
sincerly

Hi Dewline, Frank is no longer amongst us, he passed away a couple of years ago. he amazed me the way he could watch the controllers for a few minutes and spot the relay that just wasn't pulling at the right time, never hardly looking at the specs. His trailer is now owned by Ron Wildman. The cow palace was a real good spot, it was never the same after Vic died. I had a cottage in Notre Dame De Mont Carmel just before the boarder in Rouses Point. My wife and I always went to the Palace for drink with Frank and Pam. You must know my mother also Doreen Brunke (Biggs). Dannyb--

Morning, well the cold weather has reachedMontreal, here we go , and being an Island, the dampness is tough , good day , or make that week, to stay indoors and do some reading , Today I will go to the Race track and bet a few Bob , on Gulfstream Park horses, which is just north Of Miami , just looking at the track and people in short sleeves seems to take the tingle out of the weather, have a great day , hang tough and sign in Jimmy
Hi, It's Wednesday morning, 6:47 am, here in Comox, Vanc. Island. Boy, oh boy, did we ever get dumped on overnight, probably have 25-30 cent., and its still snowing! We lost our electricity also. It's not totally freezing out, so I wonder if it'll turn to rain later? While I realize this is nothing compared to dumps in the rest of the country, we are totally so NOT prepared for this. Will try to keep you posted. Cheers, Linda

tornados hurricanes and mudslides though 2 people were killed by the extreme
cold.

I used to work for Avco in London Ontario and we had the WHA Cup in our lobby until it was donated to the Hall of Fame. I wonder if Chuck knew/knows John Carter of the Bruins... Not only is he a dead beat dad, but his 12 year old daughter & her mother were found murdered in their home.. he's not looking too good right now!
Yeah , I remember Jean Perron , think he was railroaded out of town , good guy,but skin not thick enough for all the owners B S and the players, why ever try to talk to a 20 year old millionaire, must be tough . Lots of hockey players and sports people have not the best life Archie, same as the rest of us me thinks, I try hard not to judge as I do not wish to be judged, I used to take two busloads to Randolph for a hockey exchange, stayed in Braintree , anywhere near you Archie, I love the Bostonians great place and wonderful People , stay in touch Jimmy
I remember playing hockey outdoors at the rink corner of 5th and Verdun ave. used to play with the brothers, and boy could they skate, wonderful memories, best athelete I ever played sports with when young was George Tsnos , what an athelete,he became Sam Etcheverry's back up for the Als , great memories,so glad now that I am older, of my time in good old Verdun , and while reading all on boards , seems as if most of us did pretty well from a humble background and I am proud of each and everyone of you ,Jimmy P>S am also as proud of all my Point friends , who have overcome and made good of their lives, we had it tough, but lots of great friendships, jim
Worked as a volunteer in soup kitchen in N D G on Sherbrooke Street last night , talk about cold,it is heated with electric base boards, but sure it was less than 60 degrees inside, one young man came to me and said " I am hungry , I said well the meals are 2.50 , he siad I only have 76 cents, I told him to sit and have a meal , I look after the cash , paid for him ,and he was so grateful, all this to say we don't realize how lucky we are sometimes, then into car, talk about cold, wow freeze the nuts off of a bridge for sure, made it home , and now contemplating going back into Montreal this morning, this cold is a bit much, dont really remember it ever being this cold for this long , Oh well ,spring only 90days away ,hang tough Jimmy
Minus 16 ,light snow falling and more to come, seems like a heat wave after the past week cold spell , thinking about going to Fort Lauderdale for couple of weeks, Jim
I am here, cold again , oh well it is January, went to cottage and pipes frozen ,Lake Memphremagog , work to be done, now come on sign in , lets see who is here Jimmy
