Verdun Volunteers are Rewarded

Look what the City of Verdun does to thank their volunteers (Bénévoles) that have devoted their time during the past year, they rent a hall at the Nun's Island Cultural Center and a brunch and wine is served, all you can eat and drink (Verdunites do not overindulge). Top notch artists are hired to entertain the volunteers, in this case it was Gino Quilico, an opera and versatile singer, his daugher and a top notch pianist. As an example, Gino sang Figaro, Autumn Leaves and Unforgetable with his daughter.

As you can see from the photos, there where hundreds of people, from hockey to our own association (SHGV) that where present. We parked next to the Auditorium and where bussed to Nun's Island.

Also present where the mayor and city councilors who made each a short speech and each association received a trophy. The white bearded man is our president (Gilles Lepage).

It was a very pleasant day

Maison St Dizier (Old Stone House)

There will be the official opening of the Maison St Dizier as a museum on July 28th and of course all the important governement officials will be present. The governments have spent one and a half million dollars to renovate and do genealogical research in the building as well as in the surrounding area as this is the oldest standing building in the Montreal area having been built in 1710, 300 years ago. Indian as well as local farmers artifact where found and will be displayed so a visit by Verdunites and ex Verdunites is a must. As the photo I took last sunday shows, (unfortunately it was raining so excuse the bad results) a small tourist counter and snack bar (Case Croute) was built behind the Maison St Dizier. I plan to attend and will take photos wich I will share with you.

$108 Million Dollar bailout for the Bixi Bike Rental deal......(some deal) What are we Communist Russia from yesteryear ? We are bailing out every business that loses money..BS: If you can't make it in business, you Go Under.Simple as that.

What are these Bixi's they are renting out, sounds like Full Dress Harley's,.what a croc of $hit. Average a Harley @ say $30k,...how many Harley's would that be,? 3500 or so? You could bail out HD themselves for that. Blatant Robbery of tax Payers Money.with absolutely no fear of reprisal..they should shot these ba$*%#'s

Here is the story in today's Gazette:

MONTREAL - Montreal city council was poised Tuesday morning to vote on a $108-million bailout package to keep its internationally renowned Bixi bicyle rental program rolling.

But the official opposition says Mayor Gérald Tremblay will be doing nothing more than giving the cash-strapped agency a "blank cheque," noting that council will approve the bailout without seeing a business plan or being able to question Bixi's administrators.

There's little doubt over the outcome of the vote, which is likely to take place Tuesday afternoon, as Tremblay's Union Montreal party controls a comfortable majority on council.

However, that vote will be preceded by auditor-general Jacques Bergeron's presentation to council of his annual report, a document that is expected to include an examination of Bixi's finances.

It will also be the first time Bergeron has set foot in council since he accused the Tremblay administration of illegally intercepting his emails.

Police Release 'Suspect'----No Charges (Yet)

MONTREAL - The Montreal police announced that the suspect they arrested Friday in connection with the death of Jolène Riendeau was released from custody early Saturday morning without being charged.

In a statement, Montreal police Sgt. Ian Lafreniere wrote that the investigation into the death of the 10-year-old girl, last seen alive in Point St. Charles in 1999, will continue. The death was declared a homicide after police uncovered Riendeau's remains on a date they have yet to reveal.

Lafreniere also stated the Montreal police will have no further comment until Monday.

Montreal Police Question 'Suspect'

MONTREAL- Police have arrested a man in his 40s in the homicide of Jolène Riendeau, who vanished from Montreal's Point St. Charles district in 1999, when she was 10 years old.

But it is not certain the man will be charged with a crime, said Montreal police Sgt. Ian Lafrenière, a spokesperson for the police department.

"We are still questioning him," Lafrenière said. "We're not 100 per cent sure if he will be charged with anything."

He said the man, a Montrealer, was arrested in Montreal on Friday morning.

"We don't want to say anything about who he is or what his relationship to the family might be because if we do people might start figuring out who he is."

If the man is to be arraigned, it won't be until Saturday, Lafrenière said, as it was already too late in the day Friday to arrange for a court appearance. Police have the right to detain someone for 24 hours for questioning, he noted.

Asked to explain how police could proceed with an arrest without certainty of guilt, Lafrenière said: "We had enough information to question him."

Lafrenière refused to divulge any details on how the Montreal police found Jolene's remains except that they were found in Montreal.

He limited his description of the suspect to "a man in his 40s."

The spokesperson said police are being very careful about what they make public, as investigators need to know, when they are questioning a suspect or a witness, if they are talking to someone who has genuine information on the homicide or someone who is merely repeating what he or she heard from the media.

Lafrenière said investigators have been led down false paths in the Riendeau case before.
