"The Devil's Toy".------------------Come on , Really !

Remember these in the early to mid 60's , First one I saw was in St.Willibrord's schoolyard, I tried it & fell flat on my face..............hahahaha Later got one of my own & became pretty good on it, ( according to me).lol.   They were a far cry from the real good flexible ones they have today. ( I tried one of thos about 10 years ago.........no I didn't fall flat on my face, much to everyone's surprise..including me)

Anyway I didn't know the NFB did a film on the skateboard thing inthe 60's in Montreal,I will post it in the first comment window.

Here is the film from NFB: Some good footage around Montreal ,for those of you who don't likje skateboards,at least the film is OK.

now this Angel would be a great Devil's Toy.......except there wouldn't be many 'idle hands' therefore eliminating the 'workshop'-------lol

I made a skateboard much like the one pictured above, top left. I took my roller skates apart drilled some holes and bolted them to a piece of plywood. Steel wheels and all, the board was a disaster, unridable and I gave up on it soon after. Did they not ban the skateboard in the mid 60s? Or was that something my parents told me?

..and for those a little older, that think skateboards are a menace, then try rememberring this little guy from the mid 40's building himself a fruitcrate scooter....just a skateboard with a handle.....lol

Hi Glen how's Powell River these days.
I just posted a picture of a kid making a scooter, just as you posted your message of building a skateboard yourself...
They did ban skateboarding ,cause we had to lookout for the cops in Verdun who would confiscate the board if you were caught riding it,but I used to skateboard along Wellington Street plenty of times, especially btwn: Galt & Gordon on Wellington,.the sidewalk was really wide near the City & District Savings bank, making it fun to cruise around the corner onto Galt. or inside the entrance to Sally Shops (across the street from where I lived at the time) they had a really smooth marble type entrance for that reallly smooth ride............hahahahaha

Powell River is great, thanks for asking. Seeing the picture of the kid building his fruitcart brings the memories back a little clearer. The kid could be me in the 60s making my very own fruitcart. I think I had a couple of fruitcarts, the nais sticking through the board and bent flat chewing up my runners. I also made a few carts and aforementioned skateboard. All from scrap boards and nails we could scrounge up.
