St Patrick Parade Halted due to accident

A tragic accident has halted todays Saint patricks day parade.

MONTREAL – A fatal accident caused police to halt the St. Patrick’s parade Sunday afternoon in downtown Montreal.

An ambulance and police officers crowded around the corner of Ste. Catherine and Metcalfe Sts., where the accident occurred, about 2:15 p.m.

A yellow sheet covered what appeared to be a body lying on the street corner, and an ambulance was parked at the corner.

A flatbed truck that was carrying the Marianopolis College float and appeared to have been involved in the accident was also parked at the corner. According to witnesses at the scene, two youths sitting on the hitch linking the cab to the trailer were involved in the accident.

People from the Marianopolis float were taken off with a ladder, still clearly shaken from the incident.

A security perimeter was established around the corner, forcing paradegoers to walk around the scene.

Police have confimed that there was a collision and that a person was killed.

In 2002, a Concordia University student was injured in the parade when his legs were crushed under the wheels of a truck carrying one of the floats.

More details to come.

Here's an update , a 19 year old was crushed to death:
MONTREAL – A 19-year-old man was killed after being crushed by a float in the St. Patrick’s parade.

The accident occurred around 2:14 p.m. at the corner of Ste. Catherine and Metcalfe Sts.

Police said the man had been sitting on a flatbed truck carrying a float in the parade. The truck stopped and the man jumped off, said police spokesman Daniel Lacoursière. When the truck started moving again the man lost his footing and was hit by one of the wheels.

According to witnesses on the scene, two youths had been sitting on the platform linking the truck to the trailer. Another man was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

The truck carrying the Marianopolis College float was parked at the intersection, where a body lay covered by a yellow sheet.

People from the Marianopolis float were taken off with a ladder, clearly shaken from the incident.

Police cleared paradegoers from the area, but some were reluctant to go. Police on horseback were moving pedestrians south along Peel St.

Strange. I was in the parade with Griffintown Horse Palace, hung around at the end for about 15 minutes, but never heard a word about this. Have to say it was really cool to see people out for what was essentially a rain soaked afternoon. Not record numbers by far but very nice to see so many people pumped for it in the rain.
