Hello Dan. I recently joined the Verdun Connection group and while browsing in various message boards came upon your name.. We both played on the 1961 Provincial Championship Verdun Steelers Midget Football team in Crawford Park. In fact ,at halftime, in the championship game against St. Laurent you collapsed on top of me in the dressing room because of a back/kidney injury you sustained. I still remember the name of the St. Laurent player that kicked you in the kidney area. (Maxi Habercorn) Luckily Dr. Rae Brown and Alex Duguid were there to assist you immediately. Do you rember that. By the end of the game the field was surrounded by the Verdun police force because they thought there was going to be a riot between the Verdun and St. Laurent fans. The team consisted of Bob Naylor,Gordie Devlin,Gary Cutler,Wally Straps,Danny Muirhead Larry Mehan,Pete St.Amour,Paul Ayotte,Murray O'Hara,Larry Gahan,Paul Tibodeau,Gerry Dugid, Larry Latimer,Malcolm Brown ,Jean Nadeau ,Charlie Dunn.myself (George Edwards) and you. I don't really have that good of a memory. I just recently moved and while unpacking found a 1970 Black & Gold Year Book that contains a bunch of team pictures from different years. I just wanted to say hello after all these years. Are you still in touch with any of the guys?.

Hi Just read your post on B&G..wondering if you could put some of the 1970 yearbook on here..knew some of the guys on that team. They won provincial that year. Think they beat Laval at the old stadium. That might be same year Bengals won Cdn.championship in Juvenile.Worked with a Danny Muirhead at CN. Lived in LaSalle after awhile..must be the same one.Would be good to see old pictures. Thanks Lad

Hi Lad: I'm not sure if my message got through so I'll repeat it . I'll try to post the pictures on Monday or Tuesday. The Danny Muirhead is the same one that worked at CN. I also worked at Headquarters on Lagauchitere Street at that time. The Steelers were the Provincial Champs that year and we defeated St. Laurent in a two game total point final. St. Laurent had been the perennial champs until that year.. The first game, played in St. Laurent, we lost but the second ,played in Crawford Park we beat them 30-0. In 1961 Danny lived on Wellington Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. There was no juvenile team in Verdun in 1961. We had to go to the Point the next year and play for Leo's Boys Juvenile team, which was coached by Bob Geary. Subsequently, guys like Brian Ranger founded the Verdun Invictus Juvenile Football team. Not sure the exact year.
George, that brings back alot of memories, I'm not in touch with any of these guys any more Wally is living in Nova Scotia, but the rest I lost touch with mainly because I've been in the U.S. for about 25 years I guess. I still have sisters in TO and Montreal but rarely get back there any more and if I do it'll be in the summer. Dan
