to shoot or not to shoot ------------------in the low 80's preferably

Seems the 'borrough' of Verdun has issued an ultimatum for Nuns Island Golf Course

MONTREAL - The borough of Verdun said Tuesday it intends to give Pierre Émond, operator of Golf Île des Soeurs, 90 days to conform with environmental regulations and other commitments - "failing which he will be liable to lose his entitlement to operate the golf course."

The nine-hole course, on Nuns' Island, had been opened in late July.

Among the points of contention, the borough said, protective netting installed to catch errant golf balls on the seventh hole encroaches "on the territory of a green corridor set up to ensure the passage of birds from the St. Lawrence River to the Bois St. Paul," a wooded area, with the eighth tee "definitely encroaching on the green corridor."

In addition, "a water retention pond installed along the eighth hole is connected directly to the storm sewer, without storing any water."

Émond also hasn't submitted a tee-time reservation policy that would give priority to borough residents with a valid Access Verdun card, a borough statement added.

"I can't tolerate a developer acting in such a brutal way, by always confronting us with a fait accompli," borough Mayor Claude Trudel said.

Émond wasn't immediately available for comment.

Ahhh Home Sweet Home

Verdun has another Shooting,....  HmmmmmmmI wonder if it's retaliation ?  The old homestead has it's problems ,it seems.  According to this morning's online Gazette, a shooting on Stephens St happened last night.....

MONTREAL – Two suspects are at large after a shooting in Verdun that left a 50-year-old man in serious condition in a hospital with at least one gunshot wound to his shoulder.

The attackers knocked on the door of the victim’s home on Stephens St. near Bannantyne St. about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, Montreal police Constable André Leclerc said.

They managed to enter the home and, very soon afterward, shots were fired. The two male suspects then fled the scene.

The victim fled to a neighbour’s house where he called 911, Leclerc said, adding that he did not know why the man didn't call from his home.

According to one media report, the victim’s wife, who was at home at the time, and was unharmed, but was in too much shock to give police a detailed description of the intruders.

But Leclerc could not confirm that she was in fact at home or what she might have seen.

Leclerc did not know if the victim knew his attackers. Investigators plan to speak to the victim again as soon as he can be questioned.

Verdun City Hall (did you know ?)

                                                                                http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=84EtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=V5kFAAAAIBAJ&dq=willibrord%20park&pg=4807%2C797212

the above article from the Dec. 4th ,1954 Montreal Gazette.

It seems that 3 years prior to this article a 10 story building was put forth & voted down, and so this article proposes the new City Hall to be 2 story's high, & centered by a 3 story tower ( What 3 stories is a Tower now............hahahahahah.if that's the case we all lived in High Rises, based on that logic.....yikes.So the preliminary plans to build the existing City Hall actually started around '54 - '55,& construction was completed by 1958,roughly a 2 year project to build it.

There are many Montreal Gazette's available to us all now through the latest acquisiton of Montreal Gazette archives by non-other than Google, who smartly makes them available to us all, through their storage capacity.....There's a lot of stuff to search thorugh, So if any of you have had your picture in the paper at some point then you can look it up,.Give it a try, there's a lot of dragging your mouse etc etc , and I suggest using the 'Full Page ' mode too.....

I'm glad they sawed off somewhere in Btwn: the original 10 story proposal & the prsent day structure, I think it's a smart looking building,.not too big & not too small....I guess it's a Goldie Locks style......"It's Just Right"----G. Locks

Pat's Mens Wear closes Shop, for good

Thanks to Steve G ( verdunlad,) who informed me of this story of Verdun's own, Pat's Mens Wear closing up shop, it was in the Gazette ( I hadn't seen it,) but here's some of the story from CBC online site:

Thanks Steve G.(Verdunlad1) I appreciate the idea........

Pat Formal Wear closes shop

A landmark men's clothing store that has dressed thousands of Montrealers since the end of the Second World War has closed its doors for good.

Pat Formal Wear opened at 5425 Verdun St. in 1947. (Google)

Pat Formal Wear on Verdun Street rang up its final sale on Thursday, after 62 years of haberdashery service to teenaged boys and men in search of stylish threads.

For years, the modest family-owned shop in Montreal's western Verdun borough ran a robust business outfitting men in dapper suits and tuxedos, for sale or for rent.

But with the advent of cheap mall clothing, sales have slowly declined in recent years, said Brian Mullins, one of two owners at the store.

The competition proved to be too much, Mullins told CBC.

"It's coming from shopping centres. Then they put meters on the streets, then the Royal Bank closed next door. Everything is changing."

Mullins, who runs the store with his brother Barry, said their retail demise isn't isolated. Verdun was once home to 16 men's clothing stores — now there are two.

Their father, Patrick Mullins, opened the store in 1947, and sold it to his sons after running the shop for three decades.

Brian Mullins estimates that he's taught hundreds and hundreds of men how to tie a tie in his 32 years working at the shop.

Hundreds and hundreds of Montreal teenagers have rented prom tuxedos here over the years. (CBC)

That kind of personal service bred loyal clients, many of whom visit the store regularly just to say hello.

"Whenever I'm in Verdun, I'm dropping by, and I've been dropping by, my goodness, for 20 years," said Ivan Livingstone, who was a Montreal Alouettes receiver from 1957 to 1960.

"To find another place like this will be difficult," said James Watson, another longtime customer.

"It certainly leaves a big hole in the community, especially in Verdun, because it was so well known," said Barry Holdbrook, who shopped at Pat Formal Wear for more than four decades.

The Mullins have liquidated most of their stock and say they will donate everything else to charity.

Movies in the Park pt:II

Here's the story from the Messanger that was brought to our attention by Pauline (pony) Thanks,.......

It was a night to be by the waterfront to see the stars under the stars last Wednesday as a crowd of about 500 or so took in the very popular “Movies in the Park”, which is sponsored by our wonderful friends at the radio family of CJAD/CHOM/Virgin Radio.

They were back after an 8-year absence and it has become a polished operation with those colorful radio station kiosks serving up Lester’s hot dogs on the grill, peanut free Lambert ice cream, cold bottled water from Eska and those sinfully tasty cupcakes from Popcakes, and there was even a popcorn setup this year, all served by those friendly radio station interns and the various sponsors.

The emcee for the night was the host of “The Beat with Heather B” none other than Heather B herself, who I had the pleasure of introducing after welcoming the crowd, and like she is on-air, a real sweetheart and was a delight to work with and can be heard weekdays from 1 pm to 4 pm on Virgin Radio.

Heather also made some people happy awarding some prizes of Jack Astor’s restaurant certificates and movie premiere passes for the new Adam Sandler movie, “Happy People” courtesy of Universal Pictures and Verdun School News, which is also a CHOM/Virgin Radio presentation.

And when the sun went down close to 9, it was time for the main attraction, the delightful family movie, “Hotel for Dogs” starring Lisa Kudrow, and the crowd having settled in with their folding chairs and blankets.

We would like to thank the Borough of Verdun and Normand Houle and Maxime Vallee at the Recreation Dept. As well, a big thanks goes to Melissa Mancuso, promotions coordinator at Virgin Radio and Skip Snair also in promotions. We hopefully look forward to another visit next year for another summer evening by the waterfront under the stars!

From all accounts a success: Way to Go Verdun          HF&RV

Company Profile

History

Since its creation in 1999, Transcontinental Media has progressed from being a publisher to being a brand leader and producer of content that nurtures the various passions of different communities of interest. Here are the highpoints in our evolution:

1979 - Transcontinental Inc. acquires the newspaper Les Affaires (which was already being printed on our presses) and the magazine SIC (which later became Affaires Plus), thus creating a third sector of activity for the company: Publishing. Then called "Publications Transcontinental", this sector is now known as Transcontinental Media.

1999 - Transcontinental commits to the development of websites, including the full editorial content of our magazines and newspapers, and launches the preshopping website Publisac.ca. The company then purchases the publishing division of Télémédia Communications, which publishes 11 titles, including Canadian Living, Coup de Pouce, Homemakers, Madame au Foyer (now Madame), ELLE QUÉBEC, Style at Home, Western Living, Vancouver Magazine, TV Guide and TV Hebdo. Transcontinental Media is created, grouping together the publishing activities of the magazines and newspapers, as well as home distribution.

2001 - The acquisition of the weekly newspapers from Groupe Unimedia and most of Gesca's weeklies leads to the addition of 18 weeklies and six periodicals. In the same year, Transcontinental Media made several important launches, notably:

  • The Metro daily, distributed free to Montreal metro users
  • ELLE CANADA magazine, for the English market in Canada
  • The lesAffaires.com website, a financial and economic news portal
  • mokasofa.com and mochasofa.com, the news and information portals for women.

2002 - Nearly 900 new employees join the team at Transcontinental Media as part of the biggest transaction in our history: The acquisition of 12 regional and local newspapers from CanWest Global Communications, published in the four Atlantic Provinces and in Saskatchewan, as well as some 30 related publications. Shortly after follows the acquisition of Ottawa Business Journal and éditions Versicolores (Fleurs, Plantes et Jardins and Spécialités Terre à Terre).

2004 - With the acquisition of the Optipress printer and publisher, Transcontinental Media integrates 26 weekly and biweekly newspapers in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, becoming the main publisher of regional and local newspapers in Atlantic Canada.

Transcontinental Media also consolidates the consumer magazine portfolio with the acquisition of Avid Media, the publisher of such respected titles as Canadian Gardening, Canadian Home & Country, Canadian Home Workshop and Outdoor Canada.

2006 - Digital media group is consolidated. This group reaches 4.3 million Canadians each month on 200 websites, with quality content that is constantly updated. Transcontinental Media also makes an entry into a segment with high growth potential in the publishing world by acquiring Chenelière Éducation, the biggest publisher of specialized textbooks in French in Canada.

2007 - Transcontinental Media continues to pursue growth by acquiring several publications, among them The Springhill-Parrsboro Record in Nova Scotia, Seaway News in Ontario, and The Oxbow Herald in Saskatchewan, as well as recette.qc.ca. In addition, the Company diversifies activities with a majority share in Enixa Media, a Québec leader in the management and installation of point-of-purchase digital networks for advertising display.

2007 - Transcontinental Media launches Transcontinental Custom Communications, a business created in partnership with the British agency Seven Squared, to offer custom publishing services for Canadian and American customers. Custom publishing is an opportunity to provide business with the strategic and innovative services that let them reach their marketing objectives, thanks to unique and personalized content, in print or digital formats.
