Remember When Garbage Pick up Was in the Lanes of Verdun

Growing up in Verdun we were all familiar with having to watch out for Garbage Trucks, or Oil Trucks ,not to mention Taxi's taking a 'fast' shortcut through a lane. Those were all dangers most of us aware of, but the trucks all disappeared over time and then Garbage out front of the house on the avenues happened. They do look horible but that is the way it is. But think about this the size of those monstrous size garbage trucks these days just in fact could not fit in the lanes,or make the right angle turn to go up between the avenues, but have a look at this old photo of a Montreal Garbage Truck way back when, they were small in comparison to today's behemouths. Verdun had their own fleet of garbage trucks and of course police cars and Firetrucks........other than the Fire Trucks all the rest of the Verdun Fleets were a green colour, even their police ambulances...Ahh that was long ago. Hope you enjoy the photo.

even in wintertime the trucks would rumble through the lanes as we got out of their way walking on the snowbanks plowed up on each side of the laneway while the big tire tracks turned to slush

Wow anonymous your description of trucks 'rumbling' through the lane brought back immediate memories of how loud a lot of trucks really were. You would hear them rumbling and because of the slush in the tire tracks ,we would always walk down the middle of the lane on the slightly higher level of snow in between tire tracks, but when you heard that rumbling you scurried to the top of a snowbank on either side of the lane, and you were wise to just get flat up against the wall and wait for the truck to pass by. It was too dangerous to take a chance to keep walking in case you slipped. This happened to a school mate friend of ours who slipped and went right under the truck,Lucky for our friend Tommy he only broke his leg,but he could easily have been killed right in front of us. I believe the lane we were going through was between Rielle and Gordon just above Wellington. At least I think it was that one.
