The payola runs deep on Nun's Island. If the residents over there had any clue on how to improve their lives they would have fought tooth and nail for an end to development 30 years ago, maybe before that even. Every new highrise means x minutes longer to get on the Champlain Bridge, x more people walking dogs, x acres of less "forest", and on it goes...Not to mention the havoc it wrecks on the view from the Verdun side (wink!).

My older sister & her husband had an apartment on Nun's Island when they first started to develop the area. I think the streets were initially named alphabetically (or something like that) All the building looked the same,& I can remember thinking that it looked like a slum of the future. Very boring ,nice inside, but so are most things when new.The heights were only 4 floors I think. I wonder if that little area even is the same today ? I have to agree ,that Montrealers would be far better off with the original Green natural Island they had before the building .Too bad. The traffic as you say Ken will inevitably get worse & worse, and then it won't be as alluring a place to be. Can you imagine how nice that Island would be as it was, with maybe just some paths to explore the Island . However that will never be. $$$$$$ Big Bucks runs the show. & if you can get 300k up to 1.5Mil for a box,it's hard to say no.
Oh Well C'est le vie, as they say............Cheers !! HF&RV

They used to sell it as, "a piece of the country, 5 minutes from downtown", and that was almost right in the 60's. Thing is people who bought in early have seen the place evolve into a, "piece of downtown, 30 minutes from downtown". Not sure how long it takes to get downtown at, say, 8:30 am but the cars sure back up a long way. It was still an explorable place up into the late 80's but it's hard to find spots now where you can't see a highrise or shorter condo project. And of course many many people have seen their spectacular view of downtown get filled up with other buildings. One of the impacts of developing Nun's Island was that it used to be a stopping off point for all kinds of birds, especially migrating waterfowl,of course, you could say that about many parts of Montreal as well. We all tend to think of Verdun as a former swamp, or at least that is the cynical take on it, but it was once a thriving wetland with a lot of biological diversity. Astonishingly, you can still get a good sense of that if you walk along the waterfront in Verdun up to where the dam used to be. In fact the dam today is a nature park.

There was plenty of waterfowl for sure,I can remember seeing old Mr Snow & others actually walking up to the river to go duck hunting ,during that season,The Snow family knew that river well,
Can you imagine seeing anyone walking down the street nowadays carrying a loaded shotgun....lol
Did you know that prior to Expo 67 ,the powers that be ,worried about the invasion of shadfly's descending on to the Expo Islands attracted by all the lights,...So knowlingly ,they poured thousands of gallons of poison right into the river (up river a bit) so it would kill the larvae of all the bugs & insects, that would be 'unsightly' to the city's visitors.
It worked on everything, but there were no bugs at Expo......(or fish in the drink ,birds in the air etc etc )
I found an article on this many years ago,but I would imagine anyone would be hard pressed to find any evidence of that today. Cheers !! HF&RV
As for losing the view to newer hi-rise buildings, that makes me laugh, because we go through that here (BC) whenever new people arrive ,they want to close the door behind them......hahahah I heard a women interviewed on the news one night, complaining that 'if they develop across the street ' this woman would lose her view of all the great trees, she could see from her house. Which BTW: was in a new development that had to cut down all the trees to build her house......and so it goes......hahahaha

I think these may be the apartment buildings built in the late late 60's or early 70's All streets were as I mentioned alphabetical. And this site seems to rent these same spots
http://property.trovit.ca/for-rent-iles-des-soeurs
I also think the street letter she lived on was 'E' and I see Elgar (that might be it, the buildings do look to be only 4 floors high. Perhaps they did have height restrictions at the time , only to have them 'reconsidered' when the Brownies sail acrodd the table to the local zoning committee.........Nah ! that would be wrong:.........hahahahahaha HF&RV

This Gazette article shows that the Island was 'Leased for 99 years' back in 1966,so they are only halfway there,Unless ,as plans do sometimes do......Things Changed...
Hmmmmmm I wonder how that happened: could it have been 'Payola' as Ken mentioned....?????
