Remember Verdun ? Sure You Do !

Remember discussing the attempts at crossing over the 4th avenue bridge.via the Arches.......  (I tried it and kept sliding back,it was a slippery little devil,) I never made it over but a lot of Verdun kids did,...................

.......Now I wonder if kids still try this trick ??  The photo is from a newspaper called the

..."Le Petit Journal "....   May 3rd ,1953......about 10 years before our group tried this..................    but I know some of you did it( at lesast I seem to recall a couple of you saying you did it,on the old MSN site)......This photo should bring back some memory's for you..................................Have Fun & Remember Verdun

ps: Thanks to Coolopolis site ,where I found this article , a Very Good Montreal Blog site, which contains all kinds of interesting stuff......  Thanks Coolopolis

Hi Ken weren't you with us when we tried to climb that thing ?I thought you were & you would have had the advantage being taller than us...However none of us probably had the best $2.oo dollar running shoes(with that medalion on the ankle)............lol They were most likely well worn in.I rememeber trying & just couldn't get any traction(perhaps that was just an inner voice saying ,Hey ,you nut , you can't climb this.......hahahahahah
As for jumping off the 4th ave bridge, I do remember people jumping & diving off that bridge ,but it was not off the top of the arches.just the railing, and you would most likely have to be dead center,or you would most likely just be dead.....that is not a deep channel.

They certainly did not,.......if we could help it,

Here's what you will see ,on the old CKVL property,.......Nothing. The film is taken starting from being in the lane Btwn. Gordon & Galt behind Wellington. ( and JMH , if you watch this ,it will show the back of your old school on Galt Msgr. Richard ? ,) also there is leeting footage of the StClemitnes Church area, not the best film, but most of us would recognise it, I played through theose lanes often....

Here's some ideas for the Acky from 1913: Original Plans.......for what is now Laverendrye Blvd:

in 1913 Montreal real estate developers were hatching a plan to turn the area near the Aqueduct into a highly desirable place to live. It was close to much of the action - including the jobs on the highly-polluted and industrial Lachine Canal. According to this artist rendition, pedestrians would be encouraged to walk alongside the water, peer over railings or even walk down stairs so you wiggle your toes in the watery St. Lawrence drink.

The pretty road would be named Aqueduct Boulevard - which of course is now known as de la Verendrey, which is as hard to spell as it is long to say. As the patched-together picture on the left displays (between Church and Woodland) what was eventually built allows no access to the water along the north side of the canal. The West Island appears to have been called Highlands. What's now known as Ville Emard was known as Rockfield. And the area between Lasalle and Verdun was known as the Bronx. Some residents of that area still call it that, and one or two stores still bear that monicker.

One hint that the area might slowly fulfill its potential as a pleasant waterside area can be found in the big series of condos finally completed near Church and St. Patrick

Thanks to Coolopolis site again for this info, from a blog posted last year,on their site.

Did anyone notice in this photo(Click on it to enlarge it & use the Zoom IN ,to inspect the photograph
You gotta love Montrealers,......there is a sign at the very bottom of the page that clearly states, it's the Province of Quebecs property, and under it No Parking,.and in the lot ,at the corner is another No Parking sign .(big P with Red line through it),.............and look at the parking lot,it's Full....hahahahaha

Love it , Only in Montreal ,where signs & age limits are just 'suggestions'....hahahahha

Here's another neat old photo. which I think was originally posted for us on the old MSN site.
It's a great shot looking down on the old Boardwalk ,and shows just how close the river was to the old railing,an aerial today would certainly be incredibly different...........This is a great Verdun shot..(jmho)

If I had tried any of these stunts. Like the upper lever bridge crossing, I would not have been able to sit down for a week.!!

My front gallery would be just out of the shot to the right of the Norman's sign,2nd floor,at one time the Mount Royal Furniture Company had a huge sign that ran almost to the corner, after a fire, the furniture store closed, & then the Bargain Basement Discount Store moved in, They always seemed to have fire sales weeks before the fire.....hahahahaha After they tore down those houses, the Greenberg's Store moved there & built a new store ,since their property at the corner of Wellington & Galt was expropriated to make way for the Metro Station in their place.

Here's a shot of where the new Greenberg's store built ,after the wrecking ball tore down the old hovels we lived in...........

Guy, here are some photos of the building we apoke about, and one showing where Greenberg's had relocated after moving to make room for the Metro Station,...this new Greenberg's site was home to a bunch of families living on the 2nd & 3rd floors over the olf MtRoyalFurniture Store,.As kids we would climb over the front gallery and walk over the big letters of the sign, to the next gallery over ,which is where the'Macarthur family lived, amongst others.etc etc If our parents only knew what us kids were doing, climbing over the sign above the heads of people walking along Wellington........hahahaha
Cheers !! HF&RV
