Snow Taxi Morin Heights

Thanks for the pictures.  I still live in the area and remember Old George Watchorn who drove the horse taxi and picked up the skier at the station.  I alway loved to listen to his stories, he lived to be in his ninties and had  wonderful stories to tell right up to the end.  Of couse we remember the Baldwins, some are still around.  As for the Taxi, snowmobile, it was also used to take the kids from Christieville to Morin Heights to school.  Although I have lived here for over 30 yrs. I am still considered a new comer, lots of history here.  Maggie what was the  last name of your Uncle Charlie

  1. Gloria, in my haste I got my Uncles mixed up. My Uncle Charlie lived in Lachute. Uncle Ernie Elliott's family was connected to the Snow-Taxi in the Mille Isles area. Ernie married my father's sister, Annie McKiernon.

  2. There were a lot  of Elliott's here in this area, many have passed on but there are still a few younger ones.  I guess somehow you probably still have relatives here.   Glo

  3. Glo. There was an obituary in The Gazette this morning for a Kathleen Baldwin, wife of William Baldwin. Son named David and Daughter named Judy. The names sound familiar. Do you know if they are part of the Morin Height Baldwins????

  5. Hi gloworm138,..............i love your description of Still being a 'Newcomer' after 30 years,.....I know many areas exactly like that,......hahaha Your post reminded me of a song i always thought was neat,.because of similar thought..........Written by a guy named   Chuck Brodsky (who has written a lot of songs with thought provoking lyrics,.......this one is called    "The Come Here's,.& the  Been Here's " The Come Heres & The Been Heres

The come heres and the been heres - they don't get along
I'd been there 15 minutes - and I knew something was wrong
The waitress wasn't friendly - and neither was the cook
Until I asked how far it was - to the town of Stony Brook

The come heres live in cabins - the been heres live in shacks
They'll say hello in passing - talk behind each others' backs
White collars versus rednecks - horses versus mules
The city kids they come here - make the teachers look like fools

The come heres come with laptops - nintendo, vcrs
Some of them have telephones - inside their foreign cars
They want to make no smoking zones in all the public places
They want to pass an ordinance outlawing turkey races

The ancestors of been heres - they came here early on
When there were just the Indians - and once they were gone
They claimed themselves the new world - there was lots to go around
Carved up a bunch of properties & they built this little town

Now the come heres nearly have the votes to make one of 'em mayor
In the last election they won half the council chairs
They took over the school board and outlawed the morning prayers
They're teaching evolution and sex education there

The come heres have their pussycats and their little white french poodles
The been heres have their hound dogs - with names like Yankee Doodle
The come heres like to watch the ducks and sometimes they will feed 'em
The been heres like to shotgun 'em & take 'em home & eat 'em

The been heres do their drinking in a been here owned saloon
But in that brand new micro-brewery there's a separate dining room
Only at the K-mart or the Wal-mart do they mix
They think of one another as carrot nibblers & hicks

The come heres keep a coming - new ones every day
They come for second chances - the new world, as they say
They buy & sell these properties - for unheard of amounts
The come heres keep a' coming - building up this little town

The come heres and the been heres - two towns that overlap
You wouldn't even see it - by just looking at a map
I was there at Christmas time - when a tree was just a tree
And you couldn't tell whose kids were who's - sitting there on Santa's knee

The come heres & the been heres - there's talk about a fence
The whole town is divided - half for and half against
..............He's done as I mentioned a lot of different songs,....and He plays an acoustic guitar & sings,.....and I find him entertaining,.........captures your attention................check out "Blow 'em Away"   or   "Our Gods" as just a couple of others he does....................... http://www.chuckbrodsky.com/lyrics.html also here's a link to Chuck Brodsky's site as well as the above lyrics site: http://www.chuckbrodsky.com/ .............................................................................................................................

  7. Les  The Come Here's and Been Here's.  I still feel that way about Verdun too.  I was born there and lived there for 31 years and still feel it is mine.  I guess I am like the British Bull Dog  "What I have I hold"   Always been proud to say I am from Verdun, and by doing so have bumped into lots of people who came from there too.   Glo

  11. Uncle Ernie's son, Ralph, lived in Milles Isles. He and his wife, Madge, had a slew of kids including Shirley and Billy (closest to my age).

  12. Maggie   Knew them all very well.  Madge and Ralph and the kids, They lived not far from us.   Still see Shirley, she has redone her family home and comes up often, she is a very nice person.  Cindy and Jimmy the two youngest are the same age as my daughter.  I am not sure where they are now.  Ralph and Madge moved to the maritimes and they are both deceased now.  It is a small world.   Glo

  13. Ralph's sister, Joan is married to Don MacArthur. They had a little country home in Mille Isles not far from Ralph and just down the street from Uncle Ernie and Auntie Annie. I spent a week there with them one summer, what a great place!

  14. Audrey, (Ralph's sister) was married to Junior Furlotte. He played in a country band. I think it was called "the Country Folk".

  15. I don't remember Joan but Audrey lived up here for awhile.  She is now remarried to Barry Black and lives near Hawksberry Ont. I still see her now and then.  I remember when The Country Band would come up to Mille Isles and play at the Town Hall.   Glo
