How about also the 'Clover' later owned by the Clahanes (I think) Aslo the Taverns around Montreal were neat,....later to become Braserries,...and what a good thing they were ,.........women allowed in unlike the Tavern Yahoo......hahahaha Cafe Metropole,(with the girls dancing in the window..when we were too young to get in the clubs,.as kids we'd go downtown to watch the grils in the windows........hahahahaha Go-Go Girls,.......... the many nightclubs ,and hotels with bars ,were legendary............
ReplyDeleteHi The Lancer was on Drummond just below St.Catherine St. In the old Hotel LaSalle.On the other side was FM and I think the yakkity yak.They also had a swingers bar upstairs near the main desk in the lobby.. The only reason I know that is one night I walked by with Kent and the boys and good looking woman asked me if I wanted to come in. She was with her husband and some friends. I asked her if he would mine. The answer was not at all the guy next to him was her boyfriend....True..Anyways we were not dressed for it and the doorman did not look kindly at us.Our crowd was downstairs. Lad

guys from Verdun would be sent there. And alot of you were.
When the kid's asked were I was from and I
told them I was from Verdun I got instant respect.It does come in handy to be a
Verdunite.

I've know quite a few 'visitors'.........hahahahahaha also some of them toured the complimentary accomodations available for those unfortunate's who undoubtably were innocent,.... StVallieres ,Shawbridge,Weredale??,......compliments of the LaBelle Province.........................

ReplyDeleteRe The Farm Sure does. know alot of guys who went there or said they did. They moved up from Weredale.Came as close as you could to going there.Last minute reprieve. Also have not heard St.Vallieres in a real long time.Heard of some guys I knew going there as well.Always thought that was for the French kids who strayed... Went to school with a guy who ended up woking there with the kids. Always remember being threatened with going to Weredale or the Farm if you acted up at home.. What did you there? Lad

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely,.........Save anything you want that I post anyway: They are thee for everyone,.......I generally will always post a Credit for the photo's if I was asked to,.....if not All someone has to do is ask me not to, So go for it,......I'll try to find some others ,I have quite a few I think on my hard drive,.but I just changed O/S so I am just getting around to organizing them again..... One thing I have had trouble finding is a list of the licensed Tavern's around Montreal prior to the Brasserie coming on the scene. all I ve found is a couple of Gals from Concordia who did a study on Montreal Taverns,....a funny article but not much in the way of pictures I also tried to get a list from the City of Montreal ,but it seems they don't have any,......I figure there has to be a copy of the business licenses from thosae days,...I beleive there was at one time 116 apprx licensed Taverns around the city,.......but it seems the powers that be,...practice my Montreal Etiquette as well..........hahahahaha Remember Nothing hahaha

ReplyDeletethe lad ,....I just went back and I was able to right click then 'copy' then email it to one of my address's ,..try doing it again,.it maybe just slow loading,...but if the pics there,and you can right click then copy then 'paste' in the text box of your email & send it to your self : Or right click & 'Save As ' to your folder of choice.. ReplyDeleteWow, taverns....Monk Tavern especially! My grandad like to tip a mug of cold frothy stuff once in a while, especially when my nan had work for him to do. He would sneak over to the Monk Tavern (corner of Springland in Ville Emard) for a cold one, but took his little dog (Tootsie). She would sit on the front stoop, and when my nan would eventually come looking for him the dog would spot her and go in the tavern to warn my grandad. He would go out the back door, and catch up with nan out the front. Innocently saying he was out walking the dog, and was there a problem. Thanks for helping me recover this memory. Cheers.

ReplyDeleteGary you've outdone yourself again,....Thanks,..I never thought to check Lovell's (if that's Lovells),.....but I see Black Bridge Tavern listed as 759 Common St.////// this was an old Tavern in the working class area of Griffintown,right close to places like J&RWeir,..ship repair etc etc ,.& right beside a little pie shaped store that a fellow named Vic used to run,..I used to get 'toasted hotdogs' in there,..they also had a barber chair in the back room,.too.... the door to BlacksBridge Tavern was right on the corner,and of course was frequented by ,many Harbour workers..... ReplyDeleteOk That's probably accurateGary ,.when I mentioned 116,..I now believe that was the figure used on CTV news by Harvey Kirk one night when they were announcing the final closure of Toe Blakes,......they mentioned that because of Brasseries & many Taverns making the switch over,..that there was only that many Tavern Licenses left as actuall Taverns,... Very Interesting ,.. old Harvey near had a tear in his eye ,when he made the announcement ,and at the end of the story he just said (to Llloyd Robertson) "That's Sad"............hahahaha I think Harvey like to tip a few ,...... Remember when the news was co-anchored by each of them? I had been in Montreal a couple of weeks before,& although it had already been reported as closed a while before,.they still kept operating,and I happened to be walking by and we decided to go in ,the waiter told us that 'officially' they were closed but they were just doing it on a daily basis,I took some pictures in there,(which was frowned upon,....but I took them anyway),....and had a couple of glasses of Beer,....so Im glad I did it was a neat old place with a lot of interesting history,............. I'll try to find those pictures
ReplyDeleteI used to go in there every Friday night after bowling with the guys from work ( on the third story in the same block) and we would play Tippits for hours (and beers). Used to see the Bruins in there quite often ( yes Don was telling the truth about having a few pops).

ReplyDeleteHow about the old Texan Restaurant,........now owned by Bronfman family actually the whole North Side of StCatherine from Lambert-Closse to Chomedy (where the old Seville was) still stands there but in very sad shape,.... Many Hockey types ate here,............directly across from here was the door to the Clover Bar ......(roughly)
ReplyDeleteDianne, Just checked with my 88 year old aunt, who confirmed that my grandad went to "Pat's Tavern" for his cold one. She wasn't sure about exactly who "Pat" was. Sure is nice to have the older generation to supply some answers for us, isn't it? Cheers.

ReplyDeleteI guess I didn't do a lot of bar visiting in my youth. I did frequent the "Yakitty-Yak" on pay-days when I was working downtown. I can't recall exactly where it was in Downtown Montreal. There was and Irish Pub (maybe the Unicorn) that shared the same stairs into the lower part of a building.
ReplyDeleteOh Les.......I just loved the Kon Tiki Room....only went there a few times though as it was too expensive for me.....filing clerk at Northern Electric salary!!! Remember the fantastic drinks? Mauna Loa with all the smoke(dry ice?) coming out from the top of the glass? Outside in the lobby, they had a little souvenir shop - I bought the Kon Tiki god salt & pepper shakers and the milk & sugar bowls - had them for years. Thanks for bringing that place up - it was really special ! judy in NB

Catherine St. We were so poor that the best we could do for a honeymoon at that time was take the small wedding party to the Kon Tiki for drinks and then party at our flat on Upper Lachine. Loved those lethal drinks! We pretended we were in Hawaii! Thanks for the memory. Dolly
ReplyDeleteSabby. I just think it is great that a couple just starting married life can start out with nothing, and hopefully make the effort together to make a go of things. Struggling together I think in most (?) cases helps make a marriage stronger. I know that is debateable, but I like the idea of it.

ReplyDeleteWinston, we celebrated our 35 years together on Dec. 17, 2006. We count the 6 years we lived together in sin! We thought it was a great way to end the year and then we found out it was a tax advantage. We waited a long time to marry because we come from families with divorce so we had to make sure we wanted to make the commitment. And indeed it is a commitment because when you just live together you are saying, I'm not sure about you, plus it's an easy way out ---- you just leave when there's a problem. We also remembered the vows we took: in sickness and in health; for better or for worse; richer or poorer. We went through the gamut of bad times and we always remembered those vows because for us, they weren't just words. So 35 years later, we have grown as a couple and individually, supportive, accepting and he puts up with me with his usual sense of humour that I still don't always get :-) I can be a grouch (sp) and always blame my hormones. Ha! And the party on Upper Lachine Road was great ---my crazy theatre friends, his mom and brother from Edmonton who didn't know what hit them, and our landlord who thought we got married because I was pregnant. Sign of those times. I married at 30 and had my son at 37 and wouldn't do it any other way. I enjoyed every minute and even enjoyed the terrible twos. So I'm one of those late bloomers and truly I'm somewhere in my forties if you ask me even though I will hit the big 60 this year! Sigh! Dolly

And I smarten up real quick. I know it is suppose to be give and take. My firast marriage I gave 50%, and then she took another 50%. That didn't leave to much for me. ReplyDeleteHi Les ! My God that just brought back another bunch of great Memories, the Famous Kon-Tiki at the Sheraton Hotel, I can still see it, and smell it. Man, they had great drinks, great appetizers ( The Famous Pupu Platter ) supper menus ! The music was so nice, and the atmosphere was so relaxing with the Polynesian Music from the Islands, and the Decor with Bridges, and water running underneath, and the smoke which made the place misty, and the big high back Bamboo Chairs wow ! I missed that place when it closed down. We use to go there at least twice a week, gee my girlfriend Ellen and I use to enjoy ourselves immensely ! I remember we had to wait in line, and the host would take our names down in the book ,and when there was a place available we would be seated, it was worth the wait let me tell you !. We were so disappointed when that place closed down, it was a very very busy place, I know they tried to re-open one on Decarie, and the funny thing is , the same host was there, it never worked as well, and closed down later.
